The Smash Bros Discussion Thread

Why does it matter in the first place? The game wasn't even meant to be played-
I'll just stop here.

well now I have made a family member and best friend for my one mii
so i've got one for each now

There is one thing that always bothered me that no one mentioned to bring up...why are the titles of the games "Super Smash Bros for 3DS/WiiU"? Those are...terrible names. It's not even like a name, it's like the placeholder for a upcoming project.

I was kinda hoping they would finalize a name for the games, but it looks like those are the official titles...

Just a pet peeve.

I hope the Gematsu leak isn't true because of the Chorus Men. They just do not appeal to me at all. Like, I didn't want Miis because they're generic, but the Chorus Men are even blander.

I dunno I'm conflicted. On one hand, yeah I'd rather have K. Rool and either Krystal, Dark Pit or Robin over Chrom and the Chorus Men, on the other hand, that leak had Shulk in it and he's my most wanted character.

I'm not sure since I don't read Smashboards, but I get the feeling that anything related to competitive Smash is still being framed around a Melee context. I feel like there's at least the risk of tunnel-vision here. This has probably the largest QA budget out of any Smash game ever, coming from a company that's renowned for its quality of craftsmanship. Nintendo is not going to let anything that might be considered exploitable or unfair to slip through the cracks.

There is a reason for that. It's not just the technical (though pure smash players do tend to get pretty focused on that aspect) aspect that is hampered, the combo game is actually where the mindgames happen in competitive smash. That and the approach/movement. With no dash dancing to make your movement varied, or grab game to threaten the opponents ground approach, the combo game would be the only thing left.

It's basically reducing the top level play to purely spacing and nothing else, ever.

I don't see why making the game accessible means neuter the aspects of it that become tense when 2 players of equal skill are playing.

To me they're "balancing" the game around what they believe to be its primary mode of play, which is generally more than 2 players with all stages and items. Smash is generally good at being a transparent game; Nintendo's concept of "balance" appears to be more around the visible mechanics of the game than the things less perceptible to non-technically minded players or players with less game knowledge/experience. Mixups are a large part of what requires game knowledge to understand. The correctness of this kind of design is as always subject to debate.

I will have to agree that the final match of the tournament was obviously skewed towards ZSS due to moveset alone and because of the mechanics there seemed to be little Kirby could do to deal with it. And I know this is an ignorant thing to say but otherwise to me it looked like every competitive Smash match ever; two players trying to hit each other and missing a lot.

Do we know how the people who played in last night's tournament feel about the game? Specifically, how they feel about the game on a competitive level?

In Smash, the movement is a huge part of your mindgame. You see people whiff a lot in smash because people bait approaches then wavedash back, dash dance, intercept or whatever to beat their prediction.

What we saw in that game was ZSS flipping around like crazy and Hungrybox not knowing where to go to put her in a bad situation. To be fair Kirby has never been a combo happy character. But he has also always been a BAD character competitively, though less so in Brawl.

Dunno about their specific impressions, maybe they'll speak, I guess that depends on the terms of the event in general.

Smash has a very fast and very adaptive spacing and zoning game. In most matchups you want to be in control of the main stage platform, so generally forcing your opponent on the platforms above you or to the ledge is creating advantage (except in Brawl where the ledge is actually where you want to be).

Some of their changes actually seem to reflect an understanding of this, they are changing ledge mechnics to make it a weaker defensive position than even in Melee, regrabbing the ledge for invincibility will make hanging on the ledge a very desperate situation.

However... the other change they made, whatever their reasoning destroys a very great offensive use of the ledge, edge hogging. In previous smash games, you could grab the edge at the last second before your opponent used a recovery move to reach it, giving you ledge invincibility and making them whiff, unable to grab the ledge and fall to their stock loss. In smash4, if you grab the ledge while someone else is on it, you steal it and they plummet. Don't know the implications of this yet, really, it may not be a bad thing, but it certainly does make controlling the ledge area significantly less important than it has been. It will probably also make recovering from the ledge significantly more difficult, don't know if that is a bad thing or not.

The game is so close to release, I think we can almost guarantee the system is set. In fact it is probably almost gold by this point.

It certainly does look good, I like the aesthetic direction a lot more this time than in Brawl.

Silver lining, at least there wont be chain grabs up to kill % anymore... but I like the grab game so much, without the mixup there it kinda just seems like you'll throw them to the nearest edge or to the top blast zone at high %.

No, I've heard that Sakurai's team was specifically going around the Smash floor asking people on their opinion of the game and what changes they felt should be made.
Source.

Pac-Man surprisingly the best reveal of the 3.

I'm so
so
so so so so so so so so
so
SO
glad they went with the World design.

Jesus Christ people can't we just enjoy a fucking game where Pac-man can punch Megaman in the face while Sonic is kicking Mario from above
The problem here is that you and Ruin are looking at it from a different perspective than Tomo and your last respective comments showed that.

If you don't care about the game from a design aspect, fine. Baller, no one can force you and I hope they don't, because that would be a dick move.

But there's a difference between "oh man this game doesn't resemble anything else on the market and could be a problem" and "jesus this isn't melee, where's my melee 2?".

The same with my friend and NRS games, he loves those, even plays competitively and does pretty well.

He wasn't looking for a new MK when Injustice came out, just not a game where Armor is throw-invincible and varible blockstun is the crazy thing that it is.

You guys are basically saying "Nah you just want another MK 9! I just want to see Black Adam vs. Shazam!".
Which is fine, but is an entirely different perspective.

So much that there isn't even an argument going on, just miscommunication.

dropping this here

The new Classic Controllers in Peach, Mario and Yoshi styles. NOT the rereleased GameCube controllers, but GameCube-styled ones that wire to the WiiMote.

That Mario one looks fucking gorgeous. I'm still getting the GameCube adaptor, but I might get the Mario one so I can play my Wii Virtual Console titles on my WiiU with a GC Controller.

>Wireless Controllers

As good as the Mario controller is (and I might get one anyway), the Yoshi controller touches me in ways i've never been touched before.

Anyway, it's a crime that none of the vids of the demo i've seen doesn't have Kirby swallowing any of the new characters we haven't already seen hats for (biggest ones being Villager and Mega Man.)

that we haven't already seen hats for

Anyway, it's gonna be interesting how the handle they Kirby hat for Mii players.

Well I'm just happy for the game
I believe they will fix the issues since they're taking notes.
Not everything has to be like Melee. honestly this feels like Marvel 2 all over again.

Still I'M SO MAD WHY WHY I would loved an eShop demo :(

Have we gotten Smash info?

Not yet. It's all Indie titles. They all look really cool and use the GamePad in really great ways.
Shovel Knight is next. HYES.

Anyone think we're getting any more reveals? I know we just got Miis, Palutena and Pac-Man, but it would weird to get character reveals in bulk like this just to have all of them be newcomers with no vets (GDubs might be an exception, but his situation got kinda fuzzy since Pac-Man's trailer.)

When is Shovel Knight releasing?

June 26 is confirmed to be when it comes out.

I can see one or two more vets. Maybe, POSSIBLY one more newcomer. With Smash 3DS's release date not far away, I don't think they'll have much time to do so otherwise.

So let me see if I get this straight.

Playable Miis

Palutena

PAC-MAN

And custom movesets, more confirmed enemies for Smash Run (Dig Dug enemies, Egg Robos, a shit ton from Kid Icarus), Miis are customizable fully, difficulty settings from Kid Icarus, a bunch of extra game modes, Classic has selectable paths...

A literal shit ton.
