Touhou Thread

Woot hope the fighters get on there then X3
Wait...I forget were the fighters fan made? It's been way to long since I looked into touhou stuff....kinda makes me sad actually...heh.

i'll admit, i never really played the shmups

the only touhou games i've really tried out were the fighters.

Heard about this last night on shmups forum. Keep in mind that apparently these aren't the official main series by Zun but rather some fan projects that Zun is allowing on Ps4.

A tweet by ZUN: ちなみに今すぐに、僕が出すというわけではないのです。何とは言わず 2014年9月1日 19:40

It's derivative works of Touhou coming to PS4, not ZUN's own work and not the Touhou series. You should probably change the title.

Basically what's happening is, ZUN is collaborating with Sony to release a "platform" (ie. Game Room), the first "installment" includes three games: Fushigi no Gensokyo 3 by AQUA STYLE, Soushin Engi by Strawberry Bouzu and Touhou Sky Arena MATSURI by Area-ZERO. None of these are shmups.

I would like to see Koumajou 2 or Meikyuu 2 on there, they are good games.

So yeah. Though keep in mind some of those doujin titles are really good. I hope they get around to putting The Last Comer and Riverbed Soul Saver on there cause those are on par with the main series if not superior in a large number of ways. The Side scrolling castlevania/touhou fan mash ups are balling as hell too.

Touhou feels so right on a keyboard, I cant imagine playing it on a pad

Shmups are really the same as fighters when it comes to control schemes. 90% of people claim an arcade stick is preferable for both, but keyboards and pads also work great if you know how to use them. I play both shmups and fighters on a pad.

Wait...I forget were the fighters fan made?

No, the fighters were a collaboration between Zun and another doujin programmer circle called Twilight Frontier. They are 100% official canon to Zun's games.

I really hope we eventually get some regular Touhou on PS4, shit would be rad.

Though, let's be honest, what are the chances of these hitting America?

Would have been worth bumping for this earlier, but Zun actually recently put up the most recent Touhou for digital distribution on Playism. Still, it's unfortunately the JP verison of Playism, but it's a big step forward since it's the first time the series has had any official digital distribution.

As for the game itself, it's alright. When it first came out people were really hyped because it had some really great patterns and boss gimmicks, but later on people realized that much like the previous game (Ten Desires) the game is all sorts of broken and once you figure out the scoring system and some of the crazy exploits on characters it's kind of not as fun. Fun if you ignore the scoring and don't bother with some of the broken characters (Sakuya boss speed killing heheheheh), but still not quite on par with PCB/IN/MOF/UFO.

OI guys there's a Touhou Fighting game. Touhou 13.5 Hopless Masquerade
There's actually two, Immaterial and Missing Power, and its sequel Unthinkable Natural Law.

IAMP is vastly better than UNL in my opinion (game design wise). Don't know anything about HM though.

Oh yeah that reminds me. Might be off topic, but there is actually a fantastic shmup/fighter hybrid on Steam called Acceleration of Suguri. I recommend checking it out. It plays more like a fighter than a shmup imo (more emphasis on reads and yomi than reflexes or sight reading hazards).

Genius of Sappheiros (aka Soushin Engi) on Playstation? I can already smell the imminent rage...
Note: It's an optional boss from a sidequest in an expansion for the original release. I'll say it outright; It's a very brutal RPG if you don't know what to do, and some fights are still brutal regardless.

So yeah. Touhou. Hmm...
I kind of like the shooters. They're not exactly brutal compared to arcade games (which are designed to eat your money anyway) so they're pretty nice. I'm only sad TH14 is Windows 7-only because I can't afford to upgrade my PC.

The fighting games are kind of odd compared to regular fighters.
Immaterial and Missing Power is probably the best designed Touhou Fighter in terms of mechanics. Not much more I can say on that since it's been an eternity since I've played it.

Hisouten and Hisoutensoku has been decried for having an immensely dumbed down control system (herpderpautocombos) an RNG-esque game changer in the form of the weather system (to the point of having a no-weather mod) relies on a CCG-esque system for specials and supers and makes guard breaks unreasonably bad (why does punishing bad blocks push the attacker back more?!) but boasts the largest cast of all the fighting games. Personal input from me: It has the absolute worst implementation of autocombos in a fighting game and the guard break thing is a huge pet peeve. I really only play it because my nephews keep bugging me about it...

Hopeless Masquerade...is weird? It's a nice change from IaMP and Hisouten/Hisoutensoku but it's just too damn weird to play. I know how to play it but I have to void out almost all knowledge of conventional fighting games in order to do well at it. Doesn't help that I mostly play the weirdest character on the roster, and her combos got changed recently.

But hey, Touhou fandom isn't really just the shooting games and quasi-sanctioned fighters but also appreciating the well-made fan projects :P
Stuff like Patchcon, Genius of Sappheiros (I am looking forward to the ensuing rage) and Shoot Shoot Nitori.

Actually Lunatic Mode is considered by fans (and stated as such in game a few times) to be the "arcade equivalent difficulty". IMO lunatic is harder than most arcade bullet hell shooters, but not as hard as the really tough achievements (beating Hibachi in Dodonpachi, etc.)

Yeah, gotta agree. Despite how convoluted some mechanics may seem, it's a surprisingly good game. Except for a few issues (balance, some match ups able to last ten minutes lol)

Official Touhou Palettes
Peacock 9 = Cirno
Squigly 20 = Yoshika

Unofficial/close enough Palettes
Fortune 3 ≈ Chen
Parasoul 18 ≈ Kazami Yuka

Any other look alikes that I missed? Who do we really want, if more palettes actually happen? Yukari Parasoul and Eirin Valentine are pretty obvious possibilities.

As the OP of this tread I'm ashamed of myself, not only for forgetting, but for taking so long to realize

Wasn't Ms. Fortune 20 based off Mokou Fujiwara, but with darker skin. Can someone please verify if it's actually Mokou.

That's just a indiegogo's original colors, though I can see why one would think that.

So I was looking for funny Smash pics and found this instead

A Strawberry Bose RPG...but don't bother with that one.

It's pretty poor compared to the rest of the RPGs they've made, like Souzinengi (Genius of Sappheiros) or Gensoumaroku (Devil of Decline)

The former is gonna hit PSN as one of the doujin Touhou titles.

http://playism-games.com/article/touhou-finally-coming-to-the-west

Double Dealing Character coming to the west on the English version of Playism.

Game has some fun bosses and level layout, even though the scoring system and a few mechanics are broken as hell. But hey, it's got complex/dense patterns and its rng hell like most of the others, so I'll take it over most CAVE shooters.

I feel like Zun could have helped the popularity of the genre if he had done this earlier though, oh well.

This could be either very good or very bad. I just hope that the translations are good and that there are no name changes.

i can't wait for the adventures of Raimi Hackery in the magical land of Gensifornia

The story/dialogue in the series is so nonsense that an engrish translation would probably make more sense honestly.

This is a 100% good thing because now people who want to play these games legally don't have to backflip through flaming hoops (importing) to do so.

Official site updated

Mokou and Shinmyoumaru confirmed for ULiL. Looks like that leak was legit.

Also, Miko and Byakuren are back.

I like Futo's new "punch you with a well woman emerging from a plate" attack
that should just be fighting game standard, really

This will either be good, or a trainwreck of epic proportions.

How so? There's a tiny music industry in the doujin world dedicated to Touhou. It's not like one extra arrange by Konami is going to make any difference.

I was just about to make an absurdly lengthy post talking about/analyzing what parts of this franchise I think are good and what's over-rated. Would anybody care to read/discuss (feels kinda awkward posting a wall of text out of nowhere)?

A member of another forum translated ZUN's announcement post.

Spoilered for length.

Good grief, it's almost May already. This year Hakurei Jinja Reitaisai will be held again at May 10th.

The thing Team Shangai Alice is planning to distribute is the following.

(Image removed from quote.)

Touhou Project 15.
"東方紺珠伝 ~ Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom."

It's read as Touhou Kanjuden (とうほうかんじゅでん). It will be completed this summer, and the demo version will be released on Reitaisai.

If I had to explain the general overview of the story, it's a secret. The player characters will be Reimu, Marisa, Sanae en Reisen. Though there will still be changes, I added some screenshots of the current state of development.

  (screenshots. see http://kourindou.exblog.jp/22976576/)

* The game is still in development. It's sure to change, so speculation on the basis of these screenshots is useless.

On face value it doesn't look much different from normal, but this time it will have a pretty daring system. It might turn out very different from the gameplay up till now. (although the fundamental shmup components are more simple) It's a challenge that seems to go well, so I get the feeling I might somehow manage to finish the demo. I hope you can appreciate the game as a proposition of what shmup games can also look like.

But if I'm honest, the completion of the demo version is still very far away, so I plan to continue development until just before Reitaisai. Which means the CD's will be home burned...... It's been longs since I had this feeling that signifies this kind of dōjin activities, so I am excited for it.
Having said that, I am still unsure whether I will finish the system modifications for the large changes in the gameplay on time, but we will see at Reitaisai this year. (Although thinking of what would happen if I don't is even worse)

Oh, furthermore, Touhou Project 14.5 Touhou Shinpiroku ~ Urban Legend in Limbo is also planned to be released at Reitaisai. If you are interested I would greatly appreciate you picking it up as well.
