Valentine General Discussion / Social Thread!

I don't get the mentality that if a reset is reactable, it's bad. I don't get it at all.

Neither do I really. Technically speaking, most resets are reactable; main reason they are generally effective is that you're opening up the weakness in an opponent's defenses. But I digress, my success rate of resetting using j.LK midscreen & corner is pretty consistent though so I see it as far from useless. I've found that all of Val's normals have some practical application depending on the situation but if I had to choose which moves I use the least, it'd have to be s.MK and c.HK as I don't incorporate them into my gameplan as much.

I've used more for fake crossunders and to start corner air chains, since the first hit deals more damage than j.lp.
I also have been giving up on Val and learning Fukua, tho I'm not sure about it.

I play Val because her pressure and okizeme are ridiculously strong for how good her neutral game is (and her neutral is one of the best in the game with proper assists IMO). She's obviously no Milia but Milia doesn't have Val's j.HK lol

Her only real weakness is her average damage off of a random hit isn't as high as a lot of the rest of the cast, but her combos generally lead to corner carry and a knockdown which is valuable enough that I think the tradeoff of slightly less damage is fine.

corner val is so boooooring
midscreen val feels so more fun, jumping around, crossing up, crossing under, bypassing errythang...

I honestly don't know how to keep corner pressure going cuz I want my crossups.

it might be 'boring' but it's really strong IMO, to the point where my entire strategy involves backing my opponent into a corner and pressuring them endlessly with double butt and j.mp xx airdash whatever, going for resets into more pressure (or just killing them if they're low enough)

idk, continuous pressure seems anti-fun.
I don't play to be the very best or something. I just want to do air chains and play with people in the air and reset them early.

*shrug* whatever works for you. For me i see repeated pressure and okizeme as my reward for playing the neutral game right and getting my hit in.

I never liked cornering with Val. I usually like to be on the middle because I feel there is no limit of movement

Valentine is awesome. Usually my main teams are Valentine/Cerebella and Valentine/Squigly, I think they complement very well to each other.

Not so sure about Squigs, but I just play Bella because she works wonderfully with Val.

I don't know if its just my OCD kicking in but does any one else get annoyed by the fact that when you switch sides with Val. her eye patch moves from her left eye to her right eye

Don't think it should be called an eyepatch. More like a bandage or something.

ok well the eyepatch/ bandage thing changes eyes lol

But also Squigs missing eye and all the other things.
The only one that has a reason is Parasoul, that has an animation of her hair changing sides.

ohh maybe I should complain about those too lol. jk jk it was just an observation

Beo's s.lk hits low
When will Val's s.lk hit low too?

Who's the best Valentine player? That's on youtube?

idk, nobody plays val anymore.

if you're looking up high level valentine play, look up duckator, specifically the kumite he participated in

don't really know any other high level valentines that have findable footage

And people dare say she's top tier.

Sweet thanks. Yeah the only person I could think of was duckator too.

Try cloudking and shademoneh, they're ok

Best val player..... idk anymore. I woulda said Duckator... but who knows where he is now. Haven't seen any footage of him post EVO 2014.

Outlaw Spike is a decent solo player, as is ShinAtProof. Cloudking is pretty good although his Val combo routes are pretty advanced/unorthodox and not for beginners.

ShinATproof and omniscythe are also names to remember.

Every time I'm not playing Valentine I wish I was playing Valentine

Damn this character's run speed is so slow
I wish I could do better cross ups
Boy I wish I had Scalpels
This air approach is too linear, I want to go higher
My lights are too slow and short, if I were playing Valentine I could easily punish that

Man, I learnt how to play Parasoul and she is fun as fuck, but GOD DAMMIT where is her mobility? I feel like playing with a pretty and elegant snail full of mixups.

Can't play anything without double jump. Not even Filia.

Mobility is more than just having tons of movement options. She has limited movement, but what she does have is super fucking quick and generally leads to long/disjointed/fast options.

Float is sooooo good. Keeps her above everyone and is like "hey want some, here have a really safe unless you chicken block j.hp, or get faked out and proceed to get bodied". Except peacock, but thats just how it is

Yeah I agree. The only other character I really like to play is Eliza, since she has a similar air dash. No double jump though.

As weird as it is I like Parasoul's movement (and Parasoul more as a character TBH) more than Filia's, i could never wrap my head around playing her besides IAD j.HP/HK lol. With Parasoul I feel like if I can ever get them blocking I can go in and do her crazy pressure and crossups and shit, while actually has a neutral game.

yeah i was thinking about this picture when I wrote the post, I just didn't know the name of the picture nor could I be bothered editing it.

Welp since I played Filia so much my Valentine sucks so much now.

And I need to remind myself to use j.MK more for air to air and rework how I play now since MK Bomber was an important part of my gameplan.

I'm looking for somebody to teach me some basic val combos and resets. Finally taking a step to improve my game a little.

sLP sMP sMP cMK cHP
jHP adc jMP jHK
jLP jMP jHK
sLP sMP sMP cMK sHP Bypass x EKG

basic crossunder reset would be to adc jLK instead of adc jMP in the second chain of that combo.

basic low/throw reset would be to do everything up to the sMP in the final chain, wait and low/throw instead of the sMP.

basic crossup reset would be to do everything up to the jHK in the third chain and adc jHP crossup instead of the jHK.

keep in mind that resets aren't really about the depth/strength of the reset, and more about being in your opponent's head and reading what they want to do.
