A thread for this needs to be back for the Off Topics so here we go!
====================================================

There has been alot of buzz lately for a certain kickstarter project and yes you guessed it..

Mighty No.9 by Keiji Inafune and various past veteran Megaman game developers. The project has already rocketed past the initial $900,000 goal and is sitting at roughly $1.3 Million currently. The project has barely started but is starting the progress to hit up on the various stretch goals. Gonna back this later this week.

I'm curious if the big developers might go to crowdfunding for projects that would otherwise be risky for them.
An example would be to cover the translation and production costs on game localizations that the publisher is doubtful there is enough demand to warrant it.

I'm probably going to throw money at this one before I go to bed tonight: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1192311215/ghost-song-a-journey-of-hope

I'm a bit of a sucker for metroidvanias and this one doesn't look too bad. Also I can't remember but didn't Mike talk about this one at least once during one of the last few Salty Cupcakes. I think it was back earlier last month. As for the Mighty No. 9 kickstarter, I'm going to wait until later in the month to chip in.

There's also another kickstarter I was made aware of on Blisteredthumbs a little while back that almost made me slam my face into my desk. It's just.... ugh.

I really hope people help support this indie 2d fighter, Pocket Rumble:

Seems like "the next step up from Divekick" in terms of complexity-- still super super focused on accessibility (which is awesome), but in this case it actually stays true to the traditional "form" of a 2d fighter, with normals and special moves and whatnot. I think it'll be really great for people who may have cut their teeth on Divekick, or are otherwise intimidated by most of the genre. I'm really digging the music too. Oh and the programmer is way adorbs, like what the hell

One thing that's left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth is that SRK has not been reporting on this whatsoever, even though I'm pretty sure it would totally be on track to get funded if they had posted a little news blurb about it. I think that should probably feel discouraging to anyone who might be interested in designing their own fighter in the future. Even if you're working on something with polish and a strong niche like Pocket Fighter, you can't really count on the big FGC sites to care unless you have a title like League of Fighters, or a significant established fanbase (<3 SG).

Anyway people should donate to that or tweet about it or whatever. Sooooo few people seem to know about it, I'm almost surprised it's doing as well as it is.

A NEW HD SHAAAAAAAAANTAE!

I love you WayForward.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1236620800/shantae-half-genie-hero

I've only played one game from WayForward - Mighty Switch Force - but that game was freaking awesome, so I'm behind these guys all the way.

There's just one thing that's slightly strange to me...hasn't Shantae always been a dark-skinned character? She looks super white in that Kickstarter video. I'm not trying to go all "social justice warrior" here, but if they changed Shantae's race just to give her more appeal for a Kickstarter campaign...that's kinda sad.

I heard that someone already asked WayForward about Shantae's new skin color, and their reply was that they lightened up her skin to make her stand out better against dark backgrounds. So I guess there's a logical reason for it...

...or maybe they're just covering their asses?

Just wanted to send props to Mike Z for giving Legend of Iya a shoutout on stream. That game juuust barely hit its mark, but now we can look forward to it in the near future!

A lot of people have been excited about Project Phoenix, but I'm amazed that a video game project can be funded 7x over when it doesn't even have any gameplay mockups. I think everyone's just hype for another Nobuo Uematsu soundtrack!

I heard that someone already asked WayForward about Shantae's new skin color, and their reply was that they lightened up her skin to make her stand out better against dark backgrounds.

Yeah, that's an old excuse. Hollywood directors used that all the time for casting choices back in the day. Hopefully more people make a big deal about it, because Wayforward probably just underestimated how many might care. I think Shantae looked positively wonderful with her old skin tone!

ACTUALLY, GOOD NEWS on this!

They've said it wasn't intentional to "white wash" her and are going to fix it up soon. They said "we've always left it up to the artist", but it seems a bit wonky that they COULDN'T have noticed.

My guess is that they were testing the waters if anyone would care she was white. The second people complained and noticed, they got their answer and are changing her back.

EDIT: in fact, here's a screen cap!

I never played a Shantae game before, but I really like how that one looks, and hearing she'll have a darker skin tone is pretty cool too *likes brown girls*. I need to scrape up some money to go ahead and pledge a little money.

Yeah, it was good to see them address the issue quickly, and not just sidestep it again. From the trailer video, you could definitely tell that it was an intentional change. The company that made a big deal about getting the color right on Scrooge's clothes doesn't suddenly forget what their own character looks like.

Anyway, I've spent way too much on Kickstarters this month already, so I'll use the skin tone debacle as an excuse to hold off on that one for a couple weeks. They'll probably have some updated artwork by then anyway.

Maaan, between Shovel Knight, Cryamore, A Hat in Time, and of course the Skullgirls updates, I might as well consider gaming as a part-time job next year!

Ghost song are accepting Paypal funds so I will do that when I get my paycheck. Hopefully it helps to get their wii u version goal

I'm actually glad I'm starting to invest in a Wii U now, a lot of these kickstarter games have Wii U as their target console, which is good.
Lots of great ass indie games to play!

I think I've made it pretty clear how strongly I support Mighty No 9 without saying anything...
But still I'll say it again. IF YOU HAVEN'T BACKED MIGHTY NO 9 YET, GO DO IT. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!
Just hope they add a $75 tier that includes a disc of the game, or at the very least the USB with the game on it they mentioned. Having the game as digital only is so dissapointing when the stretch goal that puts it on consoles at all is 2.2m.

But I'm still looking forward to A Hat in Time more.

The sad thing is that I really liked her new palette. But I also love her old palette.:(

Hummmm.

How about, I don't know, diferent color palletes?

Well one of the goals IS different costumes.

"Original Kickstarter Shantae" costume? lol

I am for it.

I know, I have a silly reasoning. But I guess is in the spirit of the game. After all:

-We don't know what is the skin color of magic creatures as genies.
-But I guess that if she can transform in animals and do other sick magical tricks, changing her skin color for her is easy as changing a costume.
-I find it funny that she can be white under all that sun because of magical sun block.
-She looks cute as hell with those colors.
-It contrasts nicely with the background.

For the original:

-We don't know what is the skin color of magic creatures as genies.
-But I guess that if she can transform in animals and do other sick magical tricks, changing her skin color for her is easy as changing a costume.
-Fits the sun and 1001 nights theme.
-She looks cute as hell with those colors.
-It is a classic.

Gimme both.

Maybe Shantae isnt actually dark-skinned, but white, and living in Scuttle Town eventually gave her a natural tan? (that and the standing out in darker backgrounds does help. because in the original one on GBC had Shantae's skin look somewhat white in order to stand out)

Seriously. I want to see Shantae as a guest character in Skullgirls. Fillia would be a perfect rival because hair.
Both games could happen in the same world the way I see it.

Although Sequin Island was rather technologically backwards in the first game -- the whole plot centered around having a top-secret prototype steam engine stolen to power a weapon of mass destruction.

Then sending her to the Dark Deco. Trying to find a way home.

Remember, if Lab Zero doesn't pull through, the Annie brigade will be ready with wallets...

I totally threw a few bucks on this a couple of weeks ago when I found it on Steam Greenlight.

Yeah, unfortunately things aren't going that well at the moment. But the sad part is that it's totally not a hopeless situation at all-- if SRK would just post about it, it would probably have a really good chance of making its initial goals. Really unfortunate that SRK is outright refusing to do that.

SRK won't post about any super indie fighters outside of DiveKick and whatever that League of Legends thing is. I've sent them countless tips (not for BH2 although a friend did that) of new indie games I found and they never did anything. Same with Eventscrubs.

You'd think they'd give a damn about this one though since Kick is in it.

Just found out about Hyper Light Drifter. Some parts of the game appeal to me, but some of the art is a real turn-off. 1 day in and already 3x the initial goal is impressive, though.

Looks like Pocket Rumble hasn't given up! They've got a 3DS version potentially in the works (it's a stretch goal, but want to do it regardless, sales permitting), and apparently some actual media exposure soon? There are only 4 days left, so there's not much time, but a turnaround could be possible!

Man, I just don't like Nintendo's online purchase process. As such there are games like Gunlord that I'm not really convinced to back. Heck I've yet to actually play a Shantae game do to them pretty much only being on the eshop.

The graphics for Gunlord look awesome, but I wish the gameplay wasn't SO close to Turrican. I hope it hits its goal though, if only to put more quality sidescrollers out there.
NG: DEV.TEAM doesn't seem to credit the artists much on the page, which is odd. The guy that did some of the promo art is pretty badass, so check him out: mrdream.tumblr.com

Oh yeah, and I noticed earlier some of you were talking about the idea of a Smash game with Indie characters. A while back, the guys at TIGS tried to do that, with characters from Lugaru, Bonesaw, Aquaria, Iji, Liero, Noitu Love, and some others:
Unfortunately the project's been in limbo for years, and they only got a few characters done. I'd still love to see a game like this get made though, especially with the explosion of indie titles recently. Maybe there'll be a Kickstarter project in the future?

them being only on the eshop is not a legit excuse to not play them.

Tell that to whoever is in charge of Nintendo's online policy and pricing.
