In this thread you get to talk about the hedge that rose to glory so high he became the rival of the beloved character Mario and then fell really hard because Sonic Team doesn't give a shit anymore. (Except for when generations came out but while I haven't played Lost World but with my experience on Wii exclusive Sonic games it's probably awful. *coughSonicandthelostringssonicandtheblackknightsoniccolorscough*)

I think we can all agree that most of us still give the guy a chance even though he disappoints you with every fucking release.

Where did you go Sonic? I loved you so much what the fuck happened?

My favorite sonic would probably be Sonic 3 because Ice Cap Zone both acts sounded awesome. Although the adventure series are second since because chao.

Act 2 beats 1 IMO

But Act 2 is just sort of a sped of version of Act 1 with a few different things so I guess they're really the same thing.

I actually do stuff for The Sonic Show (you may have heard of us, we're affiliated with Sonic Stadium and help run Summer of Sonic) so yeah, a Sonic thread is appreciated, aha!

That said, why you shitting on Colors? Secret Rings? Understandable. Black Knight? I personally enjoyed it, but also understandable. But Colors was a great game. Sure it was no SA3 (which we're never getting cause 06) but it was and still is one of the best Sonic games ever.

Sonic Colors is really good from what I've heard.

Also unpopular opinion incoming but: Sonic Adventure 2 is a really good fucking game. The ONLY thing bad about the gameplay are the Tails/Eggman sections, everything else is gold.

... that's hardly the unpopular opinion. The general consensus is that the Sonic/Shadow stages are amazing, the Knuckles/Rouge stages are okay but were better in SA1 and that the Tails/Eggman sections were obviously shoved in at the last minute.

The one thing that really divides the fanbase on the game is how the story is structured and if it holds up today.

Oh and the Chao. You either love them or think they are a waste of time.

Always a fan of the flash animations Sonic Shorts.
And have you guys heard the Project Chaos soundtrack for Sonic 3 & Knuckles? Amazing stuff, especially Walk on Water, Dead Batteries, Breathtaking Vision, Divided by Grace, and The Doomsday.

Don't know, it never quite grabbed a hold of me as the other ones i mentioned.

I don't like colors because I never felt Sonic should have powers like Mario does his whole thing is that he's supposed to be the fastest thing alive (shown by that cartoon's theme, you know the one.) also most of the powers made the game SLOW something sonic should never be. Also, no super sonic (I mean for the final boss I know he's around for stages but who really cares for that part) and the final boss was balls but that's only my opinion if you like it that's fine but I can't say I'd ever understand why. I also hated the remakes for generations which were also the slowest most tedious stages in the whole game I almost hated generations for just that reason.

NOTE: Yes I know super sonic is a power yes the bubbles too but those didn't really change the mechanics as a whole, sonic was still FAST.

Well we can always agree that we both like Sonic right? ...right?

If it's not too much to ask can I also know why you liked colors exactly? Was it the weird "Hey here's a puzzle" with the cube powers or something?

What are you talking about? SA2 is praised like the second coming of Jesus. Fan consensus by far is that SA2 is the best Sonic game, which also just so happens to be my personal favorite.

After SA2 for me it's Sonic 3&K, and then Generations. Also, colors is good; OP is delusional.

I liked it because it was the gameplay of Unleashed without the Werehog, which is what me and all my friends asked for.

The color power ups, to me, fit Sonic. The only "bad' one was Cube, in my opinion. The others worked well and made for interesting variations on the old "get from point A to point B" structure. The idea of having the first two acts as regular "acts" and the others as missions is nice because you get to see the level in whole as well as remixed with new gameplay elements. Also, the infinite water jump is nice.

The music is amazing, but that's par for the course for Sonic.

The story, while I can understand not caring for the dialogue, was nice and light. It was that perfect amount to be a story (unlike Generations) but not turn off classic fans by being too melodramatic. Eggman's PA announcements were hilarious too.

Plus, there is a wide range of bonus levels that are basic in design but fun in gameplay, and multiplayer, which is always welcome.

My only complaints are:
  • bosses being repeated
  • a few levels feeling unfair
  • Little 3D gameplay
  • Cube

Oh so you don't like cube either I honestly think that slowed the game down the most. I really liked drill and spike those seemed to keep a good pace going but rocket and that shadow power thing was kinda meh. Laser was okay too but I don't remember using it that much. I also didn't like the dialogue in color because everyone said "dude" way too much but that isn't something that would make a game bad sonic games never had good dialogue anyway.

Also speedrunners make the game look good but then I play it and I dunno it doesn't feel the same.

So ignoring my hate, what is your favorite stage or character theme?

E101 beta mk ii boss theme is probably one of my many favorite themes

It was also kinda sad how gamma and beta both die :_:

Favorite stage is City Escape, just due to nostalgia.
Character theme has to go to Knuckles in SA1. In fact, all the SA1 themes are the best character themes.

Favorite Sonic song? More like most addicting:

I actually really liked the Knuckles/Rouge stages, especially the huger ones (the last two space ones)

I'd say it still does hold up today. I don't think there's really any other platformers that have such an awesome sense of speed. Definitely not perfect (even on the Sonic/Shadow stages), but I can't think of any other 3d platformer that approaches the sheer hype of the Final Rush stages.

Eh, I can't say I have one definitive favorite Sonic game (had to rent a Genesis to play the original and 2, visited my friend to play SA1, played all the non-collection games on the Game Cube, played Unlashed and Black Knight on the Wii as well as most of the GBA and DS games) but I know I have a definitive hated Sonic game. The same one the entire fan base has shunned, '06. I actually gave it a shot before hating it as well. But I had to see first hand why every one was treating it like the pelage. Not that I'm gonna start listening to reviewers now on whether or not to try/buy the next new Sonic games.

So you're saying you haven't played SA2, Sonic 3&K, or Sonic Generations. What is wrong with you No wonder you don't have a favorite, you haven't played the best.

My friend bought me 06 for apparently $5 (I need it for my collection, regardless of shitness) and then he bought a copy for himself later for ONE CANADIAN DOLLAR.

Blaze is the best character.

After picking favorites I kinda wanted to choose one for each game (probably console only because I don't remember the portables)

Sonic the Hedgehog - Marble zone
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Aquatic Ruin Zone
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Ice Cap Zone (both acts)
Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Final Boss Theme
Sonic CD - Palmtree Panic Zone (Present) or Stardust Speedway Zone (Bad Future) (Both are JP version)
Sonic R - All of them they were catchy and if you don't like them well I still love you.
Sonic Adventure - E101 Beta mkII theme
Sonic Adventure 2 - Either all of Knuckle's stages themes (Specifically Aquatic Mine I dunno why don't ask) or Live and Learn
Sonic Heroes - Uh I can't remember any right now.
Sonic the Hedghog ('06) - I dunno never played it.
Sonic Unleashed - Rooftop Run
Sonic Colors - Planet Wisp Act 1
Sonic Generations - All the remixes were good so there's that. All of them.

Sonic Battle - Emerl's Theme (reminds me of Chrono's Theme for some reason)
Sonic Riders - Digital Dimension / Babylon Guardian
Sonic Riders Zero Gravity - The main theme? I'd have to re play it to find out.

I think I forgot a few but that's it for now.

Also while you like the other characters you two, they would've never come to fruition if Sonic wasn't around you're welcome. c:

I haven't played the original SA2 and I had a PC copy of the Sonic and Knuckles collection which had Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic 3 with Knuckles. So far the only game on your short list there that I haven't played is Generations. And that will have to wait sadly as my PS3 is on the fritz.

My turn, favorite level themes:

Sonic 1: Star Light Zone
Sonic 2: Metropolis Zone
Sonic 3 (w/out Knuckles): Hydrocity Zone, Act 2
Sonic & Knuckles: Other than Doomsday Zone, Death Egg Zone
Sonic CD: Tidal Tempest Present-one of the few cases where the bad future music isn't the definitive version (JP)
Sonic 3D Blast: Panic Puppet Zone Act 1 (Genesis)
lol Sonic R
Sonic Adventure: Sky Deck
Sonic Adventure 2: This is really hard to choose, but Green Forest
Sonic Heroes: Egg Fleet
Sonic 06 nope
Sonic Unleashed: Also really difficult to choose, but Adabat Day
Sonic Colors: Terminal Velocity Act 1
Sonic Generations: Just City Escape. Omfg, it's SO good.

@above Okay, that's more acceptable.

To be fair, I was introduced to Sonic through The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog instead of the games. Mainly because when the first one came out, I was three months old.

I've never been a fan of Sonic, but I did enjoy Adventure 1 and 2.

I have all the games on genesis. I have Sonic Cd on PSN but have yet to get around to playing it.

Sonic All Star Racing and All Star Racing Transformed are great racing games. Its hard to look back at Mario Kart Wii after playing it. I still need to master the classic games then work my way up

Sonic All star racing transformed is godlike. One of the best kart games up there with MKDS.

Yup.

At one time, Sonic being cooler than Mario was practically a fact. Some of y'all just don't know! Unfortunately, I had kind of a falling out with the franchise a long time ago.

I dug Sonic so much as a kid. I'd play the games repeatedly and listen to the Sound Tests for hours. I even made my own Sonic comics, and so when the Archie comics first came out, I got kinda jealous and avoided reading them. Eventually my parents bought me some back issues, and once i put my feelings aside, I found myself getting really attached to the stories and characters Archie had created. By the Sonic CD issue (#25), I was totally hooked. During the "Great Lull", those comics carried the fanbase on their frikkin' shoulders, man.

So when Sonic Adventure came out, I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew the games were a different continuity from the comics, but the games had never bothered to tell much of a story before. I figured they owed Archie at least a few cameos or something. By the time I played the game, I realized not only did Sega avoid doing that, but they were also creating a zany world for Sonic that I just didn't care about. Archie gave me Bunnie, Enerjak, Mecha Madness...while Sega gave me Big the Shit and a bunch of humans. The gameplay wasn't enough to swing me over, so I figured I'd just forget about Sonic games for a while and focus on the comics.

Then the comics started to suck. The plots were turning into a bad soap opera and you could tell they were trying to figure out what to do with Sega's bullshit. This Sonic thing just wasn't fun anymore. My friends and I were flipping back to issues 1-50 the same way we were flipping back to Sonic 1-3&K. We realized we needed to move on to something else.

Obviously I've played other Sonic games since then, and some of them aren't bad. I thought Sonic Battle in particular was really fun. Overall, I'm glad the hedgehog's still kicking, but for me it'll just never be quite like the old days.

The comics did suck when Penders was doing it, but I highly recommend picking up the reboot of it. After the Sonic and Mega Man crossover, the universe reset and it's much closer to the games now. In fact, Issue 252 shows all the events in the past being "rewritten" to be more like the games (such as Robotnik looking like how he did in the Genesis days).

But y'know, that doesn't really excite me. I DO wanna check out the MM crossover, of course, but hearing that some of my favorite issues and storylines were rewritten is kinda sad. I liked their old Robotnik. Once I warmed up to the comics, I never really needed them to be like the games.

I don't even have a big beef with Penders. Yes, his later stuff was taking the series downhill, but his early Knuckles stuff was really fun. It's hard for me to hold a grudge against someone that brought me some of my favorite characters and storylines. They just needed to pull the plug on him sooner once they realized he was going off the deep end.

Part of me still wonders what might have happened if the SatAM or Princess Sally games had ever been made. Could that kind of melding between worlds and creative teams have helped Sonic, or hurt Sonic? I guess we'll never know.

I consider myself a casual fan of Sonic. I like the games, but I'm not very good at them. I was never able to collect all of the chaos emeralds in the 2D games (aside from the Rush series), or all 6 time stones in Sonic CD for that matter, but I still enjoyed them.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was my first game in the series, and it was also the first video game I ever beat.

IGN didn't know you had to hold the run buttons to go fast.

They didn't even try. They always just throw their hands up and go "WELP SONIC" and spin this spiner
