What else can there be said about such an awesome franchise?
Every 100 years, Dracula rises from the grave to reap sorrow and death upon mankind, but the Belmont Clan, or another hero, always rises up and defeats him.
Castlevania is a great game series with amazing music, good gameplay, and of course some good story here and there. There's really not much you can say aside from all the games that've come out.
Recently though, Castlevania has definitely slowed down a bit, settling in with the "Lords of Shadow" rebooted timeline, though that's set to end in 2014 with Lords of Shadow 2, out in Febuary. Should be fun at least, right?
If you want to experience Lords of Shadow, a collection with all the DLC plus a port of the 3DS Game is due in about a month.

So talk about everyone's favorite vampire slaying centric game in here.

Dunno about you guys, but my favorite is Aria of Sorrow.

Symphony of the night and 4 were my favorite Castlevania titles and for the last four years or so, the Castlevania Harmony of Despair "metroidvania" title has gotten a lot of playtime.

I also love how the story is almost always BAM Dracula, Go kill him.

His life has to suck, wakes up once every 100 years then gets killed by a bunch of teenagers who break into his house, kill his friends and servants and generally destroy the place.

I love Castlevania, I would play the original at a friends house when I was a wee Sano jr., but we'd end up quitting after the first level. it wasnt until I got my original DS which I played Dawn of Sorrow Soma is my favorite character and I loved it. I played portrait of ruin, but the way to get to the true ending was way too hard for me, so I gave up.

I picked up Harmony of Dissonance and I have just been grinding with all the characters.

Castlevania Dracula X for that funk but Super Castlevania 4 for the epicness I still can't get past the clocktower where the bloody tears remix plays I'm just bad at whip hanging and swinging.

My first castlevania was Castlevania DS it was fun doing the little spell symbol things it made me feel like a cool guy.

Castlevania can also be really hard especially the older ones. Sometimes I quit and am very salty but in the end I can only blame myself. But then again Medusa heads and certain enemy placements are just plain mean.

Yeah, Castlevania can be a very hard game.
Any of you ever played Order of Ecclesia? Unforgiving, didn't stop me from beating it twice on Hard as both characters!

My favorite game in the series which made Shanoa a very good female lead in the series. I have over 2000 hours logged into it. I'm still pissed at Igarashi for removing Sonia Belmont from the timeline mainly because he said it didn't fit the timeline of the series when it clearly does seeing as how she gives birth to Trevor Belmont at the end, but then he says it's non-canon... my ass.

I beat Dracula in Castlevania 1 on the nes without knowing about the holy water trick on the second form.

I'm just that good.

...and lucky.

I also love all 3 DS Castlevania's. Pure magic.

The only thing I don't like about Shanoa is how much of a cheap bitch she was in Judgment.
yes I own that game.
Yes it's not one of my better purchases. But I'm not selling it.

Can we all just agree Soma Cruz is one of the most under-appreciated Castlevania characters mainly because he isn't part of the Belmont bloodline?

Shanoa's finisher is so badass. <3

Shanoa's biggest flaw is that many of her moves take time to start up, which can lead her to getting hit. She's nothing compared to Cornell.

If he gets 'Rampage Mode' activated he becomes the biggest dick in the game. It's basically Wolverine's Berserker Charge with lvl 2 X-factor.

I bet Judgment would've been much better received if it had an art style closer to the original games.

Also, of the 3D games, I think I like Curse of Darkness the most. The soundtrack is some of Yamane's best work and the story consists of Crispin Freeman & Liam O'Brien being amazing.

Can we all just agree Soma Cruz is one of the most under-appreciated Castlevania characters mainly because he isn't part of the Belmont bloodline?
I think its because he shares his games with Julius Belmont, who happens to be THE BEST BELMONT. You can't compete with that.

Julius has the best 'Oops' phrase in Harmony of Despair.

So how is Lords Of Shadows?

Well it's not that Soma is bad, it's just that Julius has done no shortage of bad ass things
Permanently killed Dracula
Still kicks ass at the ripe ole' age of 56
Isn't slowed down by it at all
Is quite possibly the strongest Belmont

And has a badass beard while doing it.

I never said people didn't like Soma. I just find it funny that Julius got the attention AFTER I said soma is underappreciated. Its more irony than anything. But you do have to admit, Soma is the Hellboy of the castlevania universe.

Like others have said, Soma had some great supporting characters, one of which happened to be one of the most badass Belomonts, there was too much awesome around for his own good.

Does anyone still play Harmony of Despair? I've been meaning to get back into it. I put a lot of hours on it.

I also love the series because I'm a mythology/demonology geek and the games are absolutely rife with references ranging from folklore to Lovecraftian mythos. It's pretty awesome to whip shit and get a learning experience at the same time. :3

Big fan of the series. Now if only we could have a 2D Castlevania budgeted as a "proper" PS3 release (even if digital), I'd be a happy vampire hunter.
I'm not very fond of the LoS saga. Seems technically competent but I also equate Castlevania with a colorful bestiary and silly humor and they would have none of those shenanigans. It's just not the same without kung fu maids and curry flinging skeletons.

As for favorites, mine is certainly Circle of the Moon, the manliest entry in the series starring a bloke that tackles boulders, whips bears, punches demons in the balls until they set on fire and shit purple cards and brought a whole freakin' castle down with said deck of cards. Great soundtrack, massive bestiary, pretty challenging and with arguably the best Dracula battle in the series. The extra modes while simply being about changing stats add quite a bit of replay value to it.
Other favorites are:
Order of Ecclesia
CHARLOTTE!JONATHAN!CHARLOTTE!JONATHAN!CHARLOTTE!JONATHAN!CHARLOTTE!JONATHAN!CHARLOTTE!JONATHAN!
Bloodlines (my first CV and also Ms Yamane's)

I would like to still play it, but don't really have time to set up anything on PS3 due to school. Maybe over winter break.

I had it for Xbox 360, and enjoyed it
Might repurchase it for PS3

Neat. Add me when you get it.

Order of Ecclesia still has the best Dracula battle to me for one simple reason. Dracula actually walks at you! In all the other games his first phase usually consists of him being stationary and teleporting followed by his transformation phase. The first time he did this, when I fought him, it blew my mind out of the water and let's not forget his Soul Steal is a teleport dash followed by a grab. Dracula literally has a grapple special.... damn this game is a gem.

Very good choices. Mine are as followed.

Order of Ecclesia
Portrait of Ruin
Super Castlevania IV
Dracula X Chronicles
Symphony of the Night
Circle of the Moon
Castlevania I & III
Rondo of Blood

I would like to still play it, but don't really have time to set up anything on PS3 due to school. Maybe over winter break.

Okay, add me when you can. Hope to see you on there.

circle of the moon is great and more people should go play it

also order of ecclesia, castlevania 1 and castlevania 3 are also on my favorites list

Julius is that old man badass that castlevania never had up to that point. Somas cool but he's essentially Dracula powered so... also love how no ones mentioned Maria.

I prefer her Symphony of The Night design.

It was nice when you fought her cause she was a blast to fight against.

I wish she got added to Harmony of Despair instead of her Rondo of Blood design.

Same. Imagine the HoD dlc fest. We heard maria... so everyone immediately thought of the SoTN design. We got little girl maria... everyone up that morning wtf'ed for hours.

I've beaten every Castlevania except the 3d ones and the arcade versions. Highlights for me are...

1. Castlevania 3- Multiple paths, you can morph into different heroes (Alucard, Grant, Sypha). Several times you fight 3 bosses in a row. One of the best if not best soundtracks in the series.

2. Rondo of Blood- Maria and her animals, cutscenes, awesome CD quality soundtrack, probably the best Reaper boss ever, multiple paths/bosses, the Shaft boss battle is the greatest in the series.

3. Symphony of the Night- The most gameplay flexability of any game. FG style inputs for a variety of spells, Morph into wolf, bat or mist each with special properties and the two with their own special attacks. Shield rod+Shield for a variety of buff magic, certain weapons have command special attacks, tons of equipment customization.

4. Order of Ecclesia- Glyph system is excellent, finally we get a little challenge something that hasn't been there since the NES games, well told story, overall the greatest set of bosses of any game, the best dracula battle by far.

I'm not bashing Julius. I guess I should have been more clear about what I said (people also hold Alucard higher than Soma too)

I just love Soma because every bit of his origins say he has to become the next Dracula, but the fact Soma rejects his fate and even allies with the family that his own powers once cursed is just awesome. It's like playing a reformed villain. and i I love reformed villains!

He's all like COME AT ME BRO. True, that fight is amazing. And that ending! *manly tears*
I feel a little silly for saying it, but I was surprised by every plot twist in OoE.

But I'll stick to my guns. Beating final Dracula in CotM was quite the struggle for me at the time. And that theme remains a favorite even to this day.
CotM has really good music, both arranged and original but sadly gets overlooked because Ms Yamane did not work on it.

LIKE THE ONE SET IN 1999 THAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SINCE TWO THOUSAND FRICKIN' THREE
I feel they'll never work on that it because of the legend built around it is just too big to risk. Like how there won't be a Devil May Cry game focused on Sparda, the rebel demon decked in dope ass 19th century pimp gear that brought down the whole freakin' demon realm by himself.

@Sano, Apologies, I never meant to accuse you of bashing Julius.

In all honesty, Castlevania is my second favorite series after Pokemon but I did not like the 2010 reboot. I didn't mind a new direction but it just didn't tickle my fancy AT ALL. I really hope after LoS2 comes out they try and get a style that feels more right to me. This is coming from someone who liked the old school and post SotN games.

Wish they did an HD metroidvania...
