A thread for the discussion of the Metal Gear series. I have high hopes for Metal Gear Solid 5 and I hope it does well. Also what is everyone's favorite game in the series, mine is 3.

Upon request I improving this opening post. I really love the Metal gear series, they rank always rank highly on my favorite games list and I believe that the Metal Gear series is one the series anyone should play regardless of whether not you play games. It has an exceptionally well written story which covers it's topic in great depth. The characters are well rounded with lots of depth.

Discuss Metal Gear Solid and Rising. It's brilliant.

I was going to make a Metal Gear Thread a while ago but since I thought no one would do it before me I put it off.
Cyberman you better treat this thread right, give it a real title and a real OP, it deserves it.
I've lost my chance to claim the throne as the Big Metal Gear Fan...

Metal Gear is my favorite video game series of all time. There are a few games that I haven't played though, mostly because of my lack of money and time, but I've always made an effort to learn everything I can about the game.
It is a staple of Stealth Action which is an under-appreciated video game genre which I happen to love. It has an incredibly deep Story which is one of the most complex in video game history that continues to expand, whether it be through main games or spinoffs. It is deeply intertwined with Philosophy and is almost guaranteed to change the views of the player, I know it affected me.

Metal Gear is without a doubt one of the greatest video game franchises of all time.

You can still claim the title of a big Metal gear fan Denizen, I think most of us would be big Metal Gear fans but you can claim the title of the biggest Metal Gear fan if you want.

Great opening post Cyber and great choice on the title, not only is that a beautiful song, it kind of symbolizes how the story hasn't ended yet.

I can't take the title of Biggest Metal Gear fan on Skullheart, at least not yet. There may be others who can challenge me and until I've faced them the title should stay untouched.

So Cyber we should kick things off with a topic right? What should we talk about first?

I guess the best way to start with a series should be talking about the Protagonist. I like all of them and my favorite is Big Boss as his story has been quite tragic. The other protagonists haven't had the greatest life but Big Boss sticks with me the most.

I love the MGS series because of the characters, story, and music. Some of my favorite soundtracks are these...

I will pick up the metal gear solid legacy edition if I have the chance. Sadly portable ops is not included even though it was canon in the series. I only played 2, metal gear on nes, portables ops and acid on psp. The bosses in 2 and portable ops were pretty meh to me

nothing is more beautifully sad than MGS3 ending theme

And "The Boss" became one of the strongest character presences in a series. (you almost never see her acting and never saw her true feats in game, but even so her name has such an impressive... don't know the words in english, but in stupid terms, "badass aura", that you truly respect the character even only hearing her tragic story on peace walker or MGS3)

i fear for the day she becomes playable in a game... they'll need to do an impressive work to keep the "mythic" status without making her looking stupid, overpowered or flawed when in action)

"It's not about changing the world. It's about doing our best to leave the world the way it is. It's about respecting the will of others and believing in your own." ~Big Boss.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is one of the games I have yet to play. I know most of what happens but right now it's number one on my Games To Play List.

Do we have to worry about Spoilers here? With Metal Gear's crazy story there are a lot of questions I still have about the games. Also, Solid Snake is my favorite protagonist. I have too many memories with him to choose anyone else.

Wow, it's been a month since anyone posted on this thread. I completely forgot about it and I feel ashamed considering how much I love Metal Gear. Let's see if we can get this train moving again. I'm surprised that the newest Metal Gear Solid games in the making haven't been brought up yet. There are two which are separate, but they are also one and the same, I don't quite get it myself. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are their names.
Here are the trailers for the two coming Metal Gear games. Let's discuss.

And in case anyone missed, Metal Gear RIsing is $30
That's $30 for the Game of the Year 2013, and all DLC is free.
Woah seriously? With the DLC included that's more than a 50% price cut! I promised myself I wouldn't touch my PS3 this semester, but I'm going to have to break that promise for this.

MGS 1-3 were great.

MGS 4+ are bat shit awful. I have no hopes for MGS5 and I'm only buying it if it has MGO, which is all that matters at this point.

MGS4: Shit story. Retarded ass faggot Raiden stops a 600 million ton ship. Raiden and Vamp sex affairs. Beyond retarded Pirates of the Caribbean Meryl and Johnny cut scene. Please tell me how MGS4 is fantastic.

Easiest game to get a big boss rank by far. Drebin points to help 3 year olds beat the game. So much is wrong with this game, I don't know how you feel otherwise.

Play peace Walker kiddo. There's some weird spiritual stuff in the plot, but it is an awesome game

I agree with Jutsei, I am far too positive of a person to hate any of the Metal Gear series, they are all great in my opinion.

This thread didn't get as much activity as I expected, so then shall we start over and get the conversations going?

Keep Peace Wanker to yourself kiddo.

I think the activity in this thread waned for so long because no one wants to deal with a certain douche bag that has reared his ugly head here. I've got a good conversation starter , Metal Gear is a very quotable game so let's discuss our favorite quotes. Here's one that I'm rather fond of.

"At last we can fight as warriors! Hand-to-Hand, it is the basis of all combat! Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon!" ~Gray Fox

I think the purists will heavily frown on me but anything by Sundowner and Armstrong is quotable gold.

Sundowner
"Like I said, kids are cruel, Jack. And I'm very in touch with my inner child."
"I'M FUCKIN' INVINCIBLE!"

*just before dying* "Christ!"

Armstrong: Played college ball, ya know.
Raiden: At some cushy Ivy League school.
Senator Armstrong: Try University of Texas. Coulda gone pro if I hadn't joined the Navy. I'm not one of those beltway pansies. I could break the president in two… with my bare hands. Don't fuck with this senator!
[Random cheering in the background]

Armstrong's big speech: ''I have a dream.' That one day every person in this nation will control their own destiny. A nation of the truly free, dammit. A nation of action, not words, ruled by strength, not committee! Where the law changes to suit the individual, not the other way around. Where power and justice are back where they belong: in the hands of the people! Where every man is free to think - to act - for himself! Fuck all these limp-dick lawyers and chickenshit bureaucrats. Fuck this 24-hour Internet spew of trivia and celebrity bullshit! Fuck American pride! Fuck the media! FUCK ALL OF IT! America is diseased. Rotten to the core. There's no saving it - we need to pull it out by the roots. Wipe the slate clean. BURN IT DOWN! And from the ashes a new America will be born. Evolved, but untamed! The weak will be purged and the strongest will thrive - free to live as they see fit, they'll make America great again! ...In my new America, people will die and kill for what they BELIEVE! Not for money. not for oil! Not for what they're told is right. Every man will be free to fight his own wars!"

And, of course - Nanomachines, son.

Always found Armstrong to be a very clever parody of the canon MGS villains.

Sadly I can't recall any good quotes from Psycho Mantis (who's my favorite character from the MGS series) but I know he had some good ones like "Meryl, Meryl - stand up where we can see you and blow your pretty little brains out."

Anyway, while I'm here I wanna ask to those more proficient at Revengeance: any tips to git gud and deal with the camera bs?
I picked the game back up again (btw, the DLC is STILL paid in EU PSN. lol Europe) but it just gets under my skin too quickly. Like, last I played, I went up to Chapter 3 and the end of 2 where I'm fighting a tank in roller blades sliding around all across the area and ALWAYS out of view (camera centered on Raiden) was basically when I was all like "'nuff with this bullshit!". I know I can use Dystopia to ride the GRAD's ass all day but that goddamned camera! And don't get me started on Monsoon's bullcrap of "FLYING CHUNKS OF METAL OUT OF NOWHERE" or multi-parry.
It's a shame, because I like the game and I really wanted to git gud at it but at some points, the combat feels more like a chore than a challenge because of some things that just seem like arbitrary bs.

And fuck Mastiffs.

Rising in general is highly quotable.

And I know it's blaspheme, but I actually prefer Boris' "Kept you waiting, huh?" over Snake's.

If the combat feels like a chore, then you have not achieved enlightenment through Revengeance difficulty.

I actually can't play the game casually on anything than lower than Hard/Very Hard anymore. Everything else dies too easily.
Killing all bosses without taking damage was a very challenging gauntlet.

Also Im playing Peacewalker for the first time right now and enjoying it.

Is it worth trying a no upgrades run or is that too restrictive and instead I should just unlock the moves and not upgrade anything else?

Maybe I used the wrong word. Overall, I feel almost enemy, individually, is easy to handle but some combinations and a faulty camera makes it very frustrating. I think the most egregious examples would be the GRAD battle at the end of Ch2 and the fight with 3 Mastiffs in a small room at the end of Ch5 (I think it's 5).
I played through Very Hard and for the most part I just wanted to get it over it (I think that was when I "dropped" the game for the first time). It's not really the getting killed that gets to me (I get far more roughed up in Dark Souls and I have hundreds of hours in that), it's just that some things feel more difficult because of unnecessary things. Also, some Very Hard boss fights are really annoying, like Mistral constantly spamming the wheel attack and Sammy boy spending the entirety of the boss fight back flipping to the other end of the stage (so much for the sword duel boss). Though Sundowner is really awesome in Very Hard, when his moving animation changes to a zig-zagging wave dash. That has to be said.
I love the feel of the combat and the parry mechanic but I dunno, every time the flaws of the camera rears it's ugly head, I feel it's not worth putting any effort into the game.

I always play on Hard. Challenging but manageable. Maybe it could be a little tougher or Very Hard a bit easier (the gap is certainly huge).

Is it worth trying a no upgrades run or is that too restrictive and instead I should just unlock the moves and not upgrade anything else?
A un-upgraded build could be a good way to improve at the game. Maybe I oughta try that as well. I admit the over-inflated HP and Fuel Cells might subconsciously make me a little more reckless.

I might get shot for saying that, but one of the things i like the most in the whole series is the MGS2 themes.

If you think about how all that deceiving and information control conspiracy theory got there WAY before internet became the uncontrollable mass of stuff it is today, it makes MGS2 the videogame counterpart of 1984 or brave new world

And the s3 idea seems pretty real, there ARE real studies about personality manipulation through semi-real experiences (ocelot's version of the s3 plan starts around 03:50)

And the digital conscience's logic kinda makes sense too (starts around 01:25)

I love the MGS series. My favorite is Snake Eater. It helps that the story for that one can stand on its own. And the gameplay was great. Plus I loved the Fear's general hamminess. MGS4 was entertaining enough. It's the easiest of them all, but I get a kick out of it. I don't get all the hate on 2. I don't think Raiden was as bad as people said. I never fully beat MGS1 because when my save file goes away I tend to never want to go back to that game. At least not for a long while. I haven't gotten to place Peace Walker or Rising yet.

I think whats awesome about Raiden is that he was almost universally hated (I liked him back in the day), but he's come so far over the course of ten years and he got a fucking awesome game out of it.
