Focusing Community Turnout at SG Tourney Events

Frosty Faustings is the big winter tourney out in Chicago. I'd like to see 32+ at that, as we only got 24 last year. We're also thinking about doing some kind of Saturday Night Salt LIVE stream, as we'll be in the house with our main man @BGCallisto.

IIRC isn't Frosty in January? That might be a little too close to NEC, which is shaping up to be an event people aren't going to want to miss.

Just thought I'd mention that now we're past EVO and heading into the four tournaments listed on the forum index, it's worth keeping an eye out for majors in early 2016 that might be worth focusing on. This is not as a way of trying to farm more pot bonuses, but the earlier that people can make plans, schedule time off, etc. the more likely we'll get a good turnout.
Winter Brawl is usually in February, but Big E has to see how we do at Summer Jam first before he'll commit to including us at more events than he already has.

That's understandable, but I still think it's worth thinking about which events people would *like* to focus on and just see who can potentially make it to what, etc.. Even if Big E decides that he'd rather focus on other games the players can still decide to focus on certain events if there's enough time to prepare.

Chiming in from TO & Traveling player perspectives:

If the community as a whole is determined to pick and choose events I'd recommend 1 per region (North West, South West, Midwest, North East, South East) that cover as many populated tri-state areas as possible. Its unlikely most players can attend more than 4-5 a year due to standard vacation time limits. Traveling farther than 7-8 by car also gets difficult for many (both due to the extra day off of work and travelers fatigue). Regions taking turns traveling to pockets of players is always a smart plan.

From a popularity standpoint the instinct to chase "Majors" is understandable but not necessarily required to make an impact. This is particularly true as the definition of a Major event continues to change. Having a showcase stage, a popular or well advertised streamer, and consistent player/dev/promoter social media support can be more important than competing well numerically with Street Fighter. Considering this, looking at events like GUTS, KIT, Frosty Faustings and the like can be as valuable as gathering weekends as SCR, NEC, or CEO community wise.

I appreciate greatly what we accomplished with SG at Combo Breaker, but remember thats because the community decided to make the event a destination. Key community members worked with me to advertise SG, build a spectacle around it, and maximize your at-and-post-event impact. YOU CAN DO THAT ANYWHERE. Please remember that.

As always, go where you can, when you can. Always travel with friends if possible or go to places where you can meet with people you know (even if its just from online rivalries or this forum). Just doing that will drastically increase happiness levels at events and create the infectious atmosphere proven to bring new people into the fandom.

Keep building, don't lose steam, see ya'll around.

I want to write longer write ups of everything i've attended but here's quick breakdown:
(EDIT: This is Dolfinh's personal opinion, of course. - Vad.)
(DolfEDIT: Not sure why that needed to stated because it's a given, but okay.)

SCR 2014 - First Event. Cool stage. Prime time slot (for a secondary stream). Irvine was a good venue but it sounds like it's never going to be there again? RIP lol. It doesn't look like anyone is planning on attending SCR 2015 so far?

NCR 2014 - Peanuts and Fastturtle were the only reason this event was any good. NCR is not worth anyone's time. I'm skipping it next year even though it's the cheapest and closest major to me. Venue is fine but Sacramento itself sucks. Quality of TOing was questionable & no stream because non-capcom support is absolutely nonexistant.

EVO 2014 - Meh. We got screwed over pretty hard by Tekken but other than that I think we had what we needed to keep our tournament going. I don't think EVO is a good fit for the SGC right now.

GUTS 3 - Personal favorite event of 2014. Good stage. Good timeslot. We got a strim. Venue was eh. I think September is a really bad time for everyone, I only attended out of financial convenience and the burning desire to sleep with Warped.

NEC 15 - No flaws regarding SG actually being run. Kenin did a great job. I personally like the NEC venue though I understand opinions on this are mixed. Timing inconvenient for college students who have finals (not that it stopped me and Beamsprouts from attending lol)

NCR 2015 - Lol

NWM 7 - Venue is kinda eh. Recommending this one regardless because it was extremely well run, the area around the venue is good, and PNW cuteboy hospitality is unmatched. I heard they're looking for something bigger for next year, which is good. Personal favorite event of 2015 so far.

EVO 2015 - Well run. We got a good stage + stream time. Still don't feel better about EVO for the SGC and I'd rather the community put their efforts elsewhere. Vegas is also either a really good time or a complete shithole depending on the person. Food is expensive as shit & it's really crowded/hot that time of year. That said, EVO is always worth the trip if you play literally any of the main games.

Ok, so there seems to be a possibility of SG being added to the lineup and getting some love at Kumite in Tennessee (Early January). Problem is that Frosty Faustings is the weekend after, but it looks doubtful that there will be anything special for us there..

Thoughts?

Can you provide more info on where you heard Skullgirls is being added to KIT?

I'm in there for both events probably. I went to KIT last year as a favor to some friends who needed an extra person to make the drive/hotel cost split more tolerable. If Skullgirls is there I'm in there for sure.

From both AphroDynamek and Vandy (the KiT TO). They're willing to support us, but of course that means us coming out to the event.

EDIT: the real main issues are the event being right next to Frosty, and the fact that AphroDynamek and some of the other usual suspects who would normally run the tournament itself can't make it.

This is probably a good place to mention that MAXOUT, Kansas City's monthly tournament series, has been a hot spot for Skullgirls. We had 16 entrants for two months in a row, which I believe may be one of the largest Skullgirls monthlies in the country (maybe the largest?). We've been trying to really push KC monthlies as a big thing for Skullgirls, so much so that this month, MAXOUT will feature a $100 pot bonus for Skullgirls!

We've had pretty explosive growth in our local SG community because of some things @Dhoppler and I are doing. A bunch of new players are picking up the game. I believe there's probably a lot of potential like this in other communities, and if there is interest I'd like to do some sort of writeup sharing the types of things we do to get people interested and help them learn the game.

Friendly reminder that the list on the forum index is getting shorter, and I haven't been told about any events to replace them with.

GUTS could probably go on there, if @mcpeanuts has enough available info to post an event thread.

GUTS could be an option, because it's reasonably large, but I'd also need there to be some indication that people are going to be focusing on that event - I don't really want it to turn into a list of every major coming up, but rather a list of the ones that people should prioritize if they can.

Not yet unfortunately. I'll be sure to let people know when I know.

If more people express interest I'll definitely do a writeup!

Winterbrawl better make it a main game......and hopefully....gets....*cough*....better run.
...I tried my best...

In lieu of Frosty Faustings, I'd recommend (respectfully) bypassing Winter Brawl so as to not add unnecessary stress to the community & its many, many travel budgets. Also, it'll open a nice stretch of time that should allow everyone to recover & prepare for whatever event might go down in the spring.

Anyways, that's just my two cents.

I think, for the size they are, both events can successfully serve their own regions, and a few people may travel.

Do WB and FF overlap or is the same month scenario?

I agree with Kai though mostly, WB and FF are definitely more in the "regional" sense as far as tournaments go. WB gets more press due to the Big E name, but I certainly would reccommend to midwest players to go to FF in a heartbeat. WB and FF will probably net similar numbers in SG anyway. I might not be able to attend either but basically midwest people have something to look forward to with FF, and EC people have WB, if its just same month and people want to commit to both. More power to them but all in all.. I feel like as a community we've basically decided on THE majors to attend.

Combo Breaker
CEOtaku
NEC

These should be the 3 people focus on attending, though i've heard some people feel pretty mixed about NEC and Big E events in general.. With that i'll say this. After talking with Big E, he really wants to give us what we deserve, he know shit has come up and its been shaky but he wants to give us the support we need and the respect we deserve. He's been watching, he understands that the northeast has one of the more popualrized/growing playerbases for the game.

Plus i'll be running it, I promise i'll make NEC pop off every year I can <3

aw shucks

While I'm at it. What about evo? I know we're side tournament status and everything, but that's still potential for big turnouts and payouts.

I am not interested in making EVO a premier tournament for SG. I would rather SG-exclusive players saved their money for CEOtaku or another event later in the year. Like kenin has said, EVO is worth it if you play literally any main game but if you're an SG player then it's just alright. There are better tournament experiences.
