Arc System Works (of Guilty Gear/BlazBlue fame) have announced that they will be cooperating with Lab Zero Games to publish the PS4 and Vita versions of Skullgirls 2nd Encore in Japan. This announcement comes bundled with another, equally-large announcement: Skullgirls 2nd Encore will feature full Japanese voiceover for its overseas next-gen release!

While the full cast hasn't yet been revealed, GamesTalk has divulged that Filia's JP voice actor will be Ayana Taketatsu, well-known for her many roles in both anime and video game voice acting.

It's unknown if territories outside of Japan will eventually have the Japanese dub backported to them, but Lab Zero have stated that such an occurrence is unlikely to happen with the international PS4 release due to licensing costs. Stay tuned for more info on this as it comes in.

Famitsu has a write-up on what players can expect from the Japanese release, and GamesTalk has created a quick n' dirty announcement as well.

Now I wonder what's up with that background...?

aw geeze... welp i guess I'm going to have to go to Japan to get this version of the game... Might as well say hi to ShinATproof while i'm there.

It's official. Skullgirls is fully anime. All you people out there denying it can hold that.

...and I don't think it's a bad thing at all.

How expensive would this have to be as dlc for it to pay for the licensing cost, I wonder

That´s greats news, congratulations to all Lab Zero staff!

Hope this improves futhermore the SGC scene on JP!... question, looking for the icons on the teaser webpage, AWS would be only publish 2ndE on PS4/Vita? what happen with the NeSiCa port? @Ravidrath

Japanese speaking Beowulf with a strong American accent would be pretty funny.

WAIT, WAIT, WAIT. IS THAT VERSION OF THE GAME GOING TO BE IN THE JAPANESE ARCADES TOO? YO, THIS IS TRUE HYPE NOW.

So it will have Japanese voice DLC (For US and EU) when it's released in Japan?

from the looks of things this is going to be a Japan only. Now if we are very lucky we might see it on steam, maybe? Again if we are lucky and if LZ spends the extra cash to do so.

Does the JP version include the voice packs such as Dazed, Soviet, Saxploitation, Valley Girl, Salty, Republican, Anime?

The irony of an American character spouting nothing but anime quotes in an American game, dubbed by a Japanese actress

What a time to be alive

Is casting being completely handled be ASW? Or does LZ have a say in who's doing the voices?

This is pretty cool news. At least we'll be able to hear the voices, would be cool if they could be DLC, but that's probably a lot more money than it's worth.

I am delighted at the idea of the English in game VO script, heavy with puns and references, being given to ARC with no further explanation then somehow recorded in Japanese.

This is what we've dealt with for every game you've made, Japan. Now you will finally understand.

Goddamn! Great things are coming for L0 one after another! This is so exciting!

Does this mean we're going to have Voices of Gaming episodes with the Japanese cast?
(Gasp)
English VAs vs. Japanese VAs. Kaiji Tang, make this happen.

Ok Ayana can be a good Filia since she played many schoolgirl characters of various ranges. Wonder if it will be the more soft spoken variety [her Koneko in DXD for example] or the more louder variety [Her Leafa in SAO for example]. She did VA work in fighting games too with I think one of them being Labrys in P4 Arena. Interested who the rest of the cast is.

Will the arcade version be updated with the Japanese voices?

Wait, is she the same voice actress that dubbed Tomoko in WataMote?

since this is the other way around of the usual situation, shouldn't japanese players prefer the original english voices?

i'm making a kind of a joke post of course, but its still funny to think about.

Last time I checked (which was probably a year or two ago), I think they actually do. lol

I remember hearing that in the Japanese arcade loctest all text in the cabs were set to English by popular demand.

Most of them do, actually... It's kind of sad, a lot of my Japanese friends on Twitter are actually unhappy about it and they'd rather have Skullgirls as just an English game. Seems like Americans are more excited for this than Japanese people ahaha

It's more that there are a demographic of people that usually prefer to listen/watch media in the original language [in the case for Skullgirls it was English] because they feel 'that is how it's intended'. There is also a demographic that prefers one language choice to the other in a more case-by-case basis depending on who is the VA cast for X game.

I feel RWBY is another rare case of this because the 'anime' was originally an American thing, but even when the show was shown in Japan with Japanese audio a lot of the more hardcore Japanese RWBY fans still preferred the original English audio.

It's the opposite here where a lot of people prefer to play Japanese games with original audio as opposed to english dubs [most localizers these days either bring the game sub only or at least dual audio] for similar reasons. Yeah Japan has 'Westaboos' like the West has 'Weeaboos'.

All I care about is whether or not this means that Skullgirls might get a physical copy. Because I would import the HELL out of both a PS4 and Vita physical copies.

I really find the whole "the original is better" mindset to be a bit obnoxious. There isn't anything wrong with liking a certain dub for one reason or another, but the original isn't objectively best.
I'm really happy about the Japanese dub, though. That is great!

Ah interesting you bring that up because Japan is very pro physical with their game releases in general. I mean JPN got physical copy of Vita Minecraft where it's not available anywhere else lol. Physical Minecraft is actually selling pretty well on the Vita in Japan consistently getting 10k~ per week.

Yeah I would import too since it would be much more convenient to have a JPN copy of this game [2nd encore has nearly everything included besides I think a color dlc] since Sony consoles are region free.

Then again the last JPN publisher CyberFront didn't do physical copies so I guess it depends if Arc Sys considers it worth it.

I appreciated all the nice things people said about my performance, but there's just something about the Japanese calling Beowulf's voice 雄大な... I like the cut of their jib.

Kai's voice acting makes all the Japanese girls squee.
