Touhou Thread

what a world we live in

Clarste was kind enough to summarize the character profiles here.

Sagume Kishin: She’s a high-ranking Lunarian and a god. Both ULiL and the invasion in LoLK were planned by her. Essentially it’s an emergency evacuation of the moon because Junko (the final boss) is laying siege the Lunar Capital with impurity. The plan was to recreate the Lunar Capital in Gensokyo as a last resort. In the meantime, the Lunarians are living in the Dream World (but most of them don’t know that because they recreated the Lunar Capital out of dreams).

The connection to ULiL comes from her power. She’s basically a super amanojaku whose words are always lies. Not because she’s a liar though, but because the world hates her and will change itself to make what she says false. If she says the sky is blue, it will turn red. This is a terrifying power, so she speaks very carefully and never makes public appearances. Anyway, she put a fraction of her power into the Power Stones of ULiL, which allows them to make false words (urban legends) into reality. The ultimate plan was to spread a rumor about the Lunar Capital, which would materialize the Lunar Capital in Gensokyo and kill everyone who lived there. But she wasn’t planning on actually carrying that out. It’s just insurance. When the protagonists show up with Eirin’s drug, she recognizes them as part of Eirin’s plan and lets them pass.

Clownpiece: She’s a fairy from Hell who was sent to the moon as part of Junko’s plan. Technically she’s a minion of Hecatia (extra boss), but they’re all working together. The moon has no life or death, so it has no fairies. Conversely though, bringing fairies to the moon will bring life and death to it. Junko plans to lay siege to the Lunar Capital by threatening it with lifeforce. Clownpiece has been “purified” by Junko’s power and is now pure lifeforce. She’s basically just hanging out on the moon being a fairy, for the sole purpose of pissing off the Lunarians. She lives outside the Lunar Capital, so there’s no air or water or anything, but she thinks of it as a relaxing vacation from Hell.

Edit: It’s been pointed out to me that Clownpiece’s power (”to drive people to madness”) is very similar to the lampades, which are nymphs under the command of Hecate. So she’s most likely a Greek nymph, which is apparently the same thing as a fairy.

Junko: A former Lunarian turned embodiment of vengeance through her own power: to purify anything. She had a grudge against Chang’e (Lunarian who doesn’t show up in this game, eternally imprisoned in the Lunar Capital) because of the death of her son and her husband, but then purified her grudge until the reason didn’t matter anymore. She can’t get to Chang’e as long as she’s being held in the Lunar Capital, so she came up with a plan to force the Lunarians to move, giving her an opportunity to attack while Chang’e is in transit. She enlisted Hecatia’s help for this plan. She’s kind of a strategic genius or something, who was bored by how predictable the Lunarians were until the protagonists showed up.

Hecatia Lapislazuli: Goddess of Hell, presumably the Greek Hecate. Necessary to Junko’s plans because she has unlimited fairy minions and can freely travel to the Dream World and harass the Lunarians there with more lifeforce (since Junko predicted they’d run there). She can freely travel to the Dream World because she has three bodies in three worlds at the same time (the Moon, the Earth, and the Spirit/Dream World). She agreed to help Junko out of sympathy for what she lost, and also because Chang’e’s husband shot down the sun way back when, which hurts Hell goddesses because you need light to have shadow. Also she’s related to Apollo, who is also the sun, so there’s some weird multicultural crossover myth vengeance going on.

dang those are actually pretty cool

Americlownpiece confirmed for still the best
Literally just there to piss people off by being there

A stage 5 fairy boss?

Has cirno been overthrown as THE STRONGEST FAIRY?

I just came in to say Yuugi has the best design.

kthnxbai.

Legendary Player Jaimers 1 credit cleared the game on Lunatic already, and posted a review of the gameplay. Apparently this is the worst entry in the series yet, gameplay wise. A shame, because I thought there were some great ideas in Double Dealing Character that were lost under a lack of polish. Seems like Zun is really losing it.

Review
"I must say that I am a bit disappointed with the full game especially since the demo seemed so promising.
This game was rushed and it most definitely shows. The game is very unbalanced, has many uninspired patterns and has numerous issues with it.

Before release, ZUN released a demo update that changed the chapter bonuses in Legacy mode to life pieces instead of bomb pieces. This changed the game drastically since you could get maximum lives at the stage 3 boss now. ZUN said at the time that he would fix the demo's lives issue in the final version but instead he made it even worse.
Instead of 5 life pieces it now requires 3 to get an extra life which means you can get max lives as early as the stage 2 boss now.
I can't even imagine how many resources you can get in the game once people actually start to develop routes for it.
I played terribly for the first three stages and I still got max lives by the end of the third stage.

Sanae's bomb is really good because she can graze bullets during her invincibility time, this helps a lot to get the amount of graze to pass the chapter bonuses. During some hard attacks you actually get rewarded for bombing since normally you don't get enough graze to pass the bonus for them.

A lot of patterns feel like they were placeholders that were supposed to be replaced with real patterns later down the line but he apparently ran out of time.
The final boss fires tons of patterns that are just bland rings of bullets, which is the first thing you learn to code in Danmakufu.
Tons and tons of patterns in the game become incredibly stupid if the boss moves low on the screen. In SA there was one attack that had this issue but now there are like 20 of them.
One of the spellcards of the stage 4 boss seems impossible to capture with Sanae because her shot makes the bombs explode right in front and next to her.
Speaking of unbalanced in a different way, the stage 5 boss final on Lunatic feels like a Normal pattern.
I was quite shocked by the final boss because it really is bad, it has no fun patterns to dodge and instead is obsessed with shooting bland sets of rings at you that require bullshit pixel-perfect micro-dodging to get past.
I don't really know why ZUN does this since theoretically he should have all the time in the world to make a game and not have to rush something half-baked like this out of the door.

On a more positive note he seems to have fixed the addictive blending mess of the stage 2 boss final which I can appreciate.

Yeah it's one of the hardest in the series but maybe not for all the right reasons."

huh thats kind of disheartening but as someone who doesn't actually play these I don't feel too bad.

I am also confused about the rushed part, was he trying to make soon enough to be released at comiket or something?

was he trying to make soon enough to be released at comiket or something?

That is the current spectulation, yeah.

Of course, keep in mind that those criticisms are for Legacy mode. I don't know how Point Device (the alternate game mode) is at the moment. I hear it's easier, though not sure if that would be a good or bad thing.

I haven't played it myself, but the impressions I've seen have been pretty love it or hate it.

I'm seeing lots of talk about tons of trial-and-error gameplay and some people find that the simple-but-difficult gimmick the final boss (or at least the way it's implemented) has is anticlimactic \ boring.

I have seen a playthrough of the game and I do agree that it seems to be the hardest game in the series thus far, even if it does hand out extra lives like candy on Halloween.

Hope everyone is having a nice clownpiece day, stay cool and do something stupid today

Imperishable Night > Any other Touhou game.
I know the existence of this game since I was ⑨, but I didn't played it due to its difficulty. But now I'm decent at playing, or that's what I think. >_>

I don't like Imperishable Night quite as much due to how much more static and memorizable it is then the rest of the series: I prefer the pulse pounding chaos of the more random boss attacks in EOSD, Mountain of Faith, UFO, etc.

I hear it has some nice scoring mechanics though. I've never really delved into Touhou scoring all that much (prefer Cave in that department from what I've played of both).

Got some big news for any Touhou fans still lurking around here. According to Nikenme Radio's Ustream channel, Twilight Frontier is currently working on a PlayStation 4 port of Touhou 14.5: Urban Legend in Limbo. It has been stated that the game will not "be ported as is," meaning that there will be some additional content coming to the PS4 version. However, the only other confirmed fact about this development is that there are currently no plans for a Vita port.

Well Touhou did get a big boom back in 2008, so it might get a resurgences with an official translation. Will the boom be as big a Jojo got, probably not. But I can see it getting some of the older fans that lost interest getting back into it and it would decently help help with the waning interest that's been happening over the past couple of years.

Apparently a bunch of fangames have already been ported to PlayStation platforms through Sony's Play, Doujin! initiative, and they're not stopping any time soon. The current lineup of both available and upcoming Play, Doujin! Touhou fangames includes:
  • Touhou Genso Rondo (a versus shmup in the style of the Senko no Ronde series) [Currently available on PS4 with an international release in the works]
  • The Genius of Sappheiros aka "Touhou Soujinengi V" (a turn-based RPG inspired by the SaGa series) [Coming soon to Vita]
  • Uniting Barrage Action (a horizontal bullet hell shmup that appears to be a retelling of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil with additional characters from later games) [Coming soon to PS4]
  • Touhou Koukishin ~Adventures of Scarlet Curiosity~ (a 3D action RPG and sequel to Youyou Kengeki Musou that plays like Ys and stars Remilia and Sakuya) [Available now for PS4]
  • Touhou Sky Arena -MATSURI- CLIMAX (a 3D ranged fighting game inspired by Magical Battle Arena) [Coming soon to both PS4 and Vita]
  • Marisa and Alice's Trap Tower (a puzzle platformer where you navigate a transforming tower and collect books as Alice and Marisa) [Coming soon to Vita]
  • Touhou Double Focus ~Aya and Momiji's Bullet Coverage Travelogue~ (a Metroidvania where Aya and Momiji are sucked into one of Kosuzu's youkai books and must work together to escape it) [Available now for Vita]
  • Fushigi no Gensokyo 3 PLUS aka "Fushigi no Gensokyo -The Tower of Desire-" (a roguelike RPG in the style of Mystery Dungeon) [Available now for Vita]
Along with these games, there are also some Touhou-themed avatars and PS4 themes.

More details have been extracted from last month's Nikenme Radio stream. Here's a summary of the additional info:

  • ZUN's doing a lot of work for the ULiL port, saying that there is a lot of stuff only he can do regarding its development.
  • ZUN has basically torpedoed any chance of ULiL getting voice acting (he could be joking, but who knows?). In his own translated words, "Adding voices would be a huge disappointment, I'll do my best to prevent it."
  • In regards to potential new characters in the ULiL port, ZUN doesn't want to add some random character who isn't involved in the plot. He teased that any possible new characters will make people think "something has begun."
  • More info on the ULiL port will be revealed at the next Reitaisai. Teasers for volume 2 of Strange Creators of Outer World (a Touhou magazine that focuses on doujin stuff) will also likely be featured at Reitaisai.
  • If hints by ZUN are any indication, the next few chapters of Forbidden Scrollery and Wild and Horned Hermit will be fairly interesting, and may contain plot twists in FS's case.
  • Another written work by ZUN has been teased. Current speculation is that it might be a non-Akyuu in-universe document, possibly another edition of the Grimoire of Marisa.
EDIT: Some new information's been revealed on the fangame front. Two more fangames have been announced for localization as of June 8th: Fushigi no Gensokyo ~The Tower of Desire~ will be localized for both PS4 and Vita by NISA in both physical and digital as Touhou Genso Wanderer, whereas Touhou Koukishin will be localized solely for PS4 by XSEED Games in digital form as Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity. Also, as the winner of an official poll, Flandre will become a DLC character in Genso Rondo after its English release on September 6th.

15.5 announced, Antimony of Common Flowers

it's another fightin' game by Twilight Frontier, story involves "perfect possession' and is a continuation of the storyline from 14.5 and 15, it seems.

It's been a while. The weather over here has suddenly gotten hotter.
On the last day of Golden Week (May 7), I will also be participating in Reitaisai.

The work I'll be presenting this time is below.
[]

Touhou Project 16th
「東方天空璋 (Touhou Tenkuushou) ~ Hidden Star in Four Seasons.」

I'll be selling the trial version at Reitaisai (if I make it in time). The full version is planned for Summer Comiket.
Please speculate about the story from the screenshots. Doing a 180 from the last work, I'm going for a really light and refreshing feeling, I guess?

The protagonists this time are; Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Tanned Cirno, and Aya Shameimaru.
What kind of adventure is this even supposed to turn into, I wonder.

Something like this.
Right now I'm in crunch time, so the screenshots are highly likely to change, but it'll probably stay an STG.
I'd sure like to release the demo for Reitaisai.

This time I'd like to return to my roots with something that simply aims to make you feel good to play. No twists; the somewhat fabled "ordinary STG" might be the thing we need right now!

And with that, IT'S TENKUUSHOU-TIME!

I hope that Cirno being Tanned is like
an actual plotpoint

I've been working on clearing Phantasmagoria of Dim Dream (touhou 3) on Lunaitc.

Surprisingly, it's actually regarded as the hardest touhou clear there is. Mostly because the last 2 bosses (3 if you're playing Marisa, which I am), are an utterly insane difficulty spike.

I'm on the last boss, been streaming most of my play sessions on twitch. I can actually get through this one because the faster paced and moving action (this was before Zun thought of going for slow bullets + a focus mode for slow movement), fun gimmicks adapted from Twinkle Star Sprites, and totally unpredictable rng reflex action make it so I don't get tired of plugging away at it (unlike most harder Cave/Psikyo/Lunatic clears).

Probably my favorite in the series and one of my top 5 shmups right now.

I had a feeling it was coming, but my body was still not ready for the latest Forbidden Scrollery.

EDIT: HSiFS demo dropped. New characters!

Etarnity Larva (Yes, her name is actually spelled like that in-game.) [Butterfly Fairy]

EDIT: Some of the translators are arguing that the above is a genuine typo and not a deliberate misspelling. Evidence is that her name is misspelled in a different way in the manual that comes with the demo (Etanity Larva) and that there's nothing in the way her name is written in Japanese to indicate any kind of unusual spelling. Her name seems like it should just be Eternity Larva after all.

But in English or?
You can buy it internationally but it will only release only in Jap, but just like about every other touhou game shrinemaiden, thpatch, or reddit with come up with a English patch with in a week or so as the game as technically already been released else were.

Yeah what people are hoping is that the steam versions sell well enough internationally, or at least in english speaking countries, that Team Shanghai Alice and Sunfish might consider doing english patches in the future. But I'm not gonna hold my breath.

I believe Zun has said that - if there were to be an official english translation - it would only be if he were to do it himself, because he's the only one who could do it.

So, uhh, yeeeeaaaaaah. Don't hold your breath.

Touhou: Azure Reflections is 30% of on PS4 as launch sale (in Europe you need PS+ to get the sale).

It's EoSD again, again. But it's a horizontal shooter, a rarity for 2hu spin offs on PS4. It looks good, sounds good, has full VA, a model veiwer, other than the fighting games I'd say this is the closest a spinoff 2hu game has been to feeling more like an actual game than just a blatant spinoff.
