King of Fighters - General

I don't care if it looks subpar as long as it plays well

Give me Shermie, Hinako, Chris, or Whip and I'll play your damn game, SNK.

Much as I love our work, I think you made that comparison backward. :^)

I'd say it really depends on whether you like "realistic" or "cartoony" more. I preffer cartoony. + I didn't play XIII that much.

400 to 600 frames per character for KOF13. (source)
Average 1,439 frames per character for Skullgirls, with Squigly and a few others being over 1,600.
That's 2x to 3x as many frames per character for SG, all still with hand-drawn shading and colors.
Skullgirls doesn't have self-shadowing (Terry's arms casting shadows on his legs) but that comes from the 3D render, not the pixel artist.

Not to mention this tidbit here.

KOF XIV looks like the game equivalent of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014). An acquired property squeezed every few years to get something-- anything -- out of it, regardless of quality, to get some quick cash.
You know what they don't have a history of, though? Being owned by Ledo Millenium.
Yup, this whole project reeks of a sign put up in the front window that reads "Under New Management"

Someone in the KOF division probably asked their new corporate overlords to make a new game and after hours of begging to not to make a mobile or pachinko game, was granted a shoestring budget to make something quick for the downloadable market. Make it cheap, and make it 3D so they it can sell DLC costumes.

Haha wow that's great, much better.

They have been working on it at least a year and said it was 3D back then.

Thanks for the input Mike. Since you've been to the site though (really glad they've left it up all these years), you know those 400 frames were no joke! Nearly a year and a half of work hours needed to finish each character, and that was using a team that could have probably pixeled Garou sprites in record time.

I agree that you guys could have shaved off a lot of those hours using your approach (especially since you weren't using colored lines for SG), but I think SNK's example still shows how tough pixeling by-hand at that size can be. Since the results will end up looking pixelated anyway, to me it just makes more sense to either scale down to a more efficient CPS3 size (which looked great imo), or do what you guys did, and scale up to a larger size that favors more traditional drawing skills.

And here, I think you perfectly illustrated the greater efficiency of your team's approach. You guys pumped out more frames at a larger size, and at an incredibly brisk pace. Whether learned from comics or animation, all of the artists' honed abilities could be applied directly to each finished frame, and there was just no need to filter all of that hard work through an additional pixel adjustment process. Awesome!

Of course, now I'm really curious to see how LabZero's approach to pixelling might have turned out, but regardless, I think you guys took the smarter route. Plus, your collective work shows exactly why 2D animation can still be an efficient tool used for video games today, even at a large scale. I just wish more big developers would get the message.

Some good news the graphics will evolve and the 2nd & 3rd trailers will be in 2016.

KOFXIV 2nd and 3rd Trailers are coming in 2016, I think they are still working very hard on the game, and it's impossible for the game to be released on January, 2016 as some gaming websites said it will be the release date.

On the other side, most of you know frionel who is in touch with SNK PLAYMORE, this years he was in TGS, and he said that the graphics will be evolved.

So it's just another case of overreaction from alpha/pre-alpha footage.

Assuming they're not lying their butts off, of course. Probably would have been better to not show the footage in the trailer at all.

This really goes to the constant problem of publishers or i don't know who making trailers of pre-alpha products...

Being honest, i can live better with a cgi trailer (because i actually enjoy cgi trailers in their merit as cgi animations. xD)

If the later trailers aren't until 2016 then there is no way this game is coming out in January, so where did that statement come from?

My guess is January was a place holder date(like all games with no release date) and either someone pulled that January 21 2016 date out from thin air or it was a miscommunication.

Nope, negative feedback isn't overreaction. And if everyone went silent, they could've just accepted it and delivered in that sorry state

I think they know better than to deliver a game with those kind of visuals. Especially with the development tools they have now.

I highly doubt that was their goal for the game in terms of visuals. If the game had actually been coming out in January like everyone randomly said, then yeah, this would have been a real problem.

Yet they still decided to "brag" with it in a trailer.
Somehow I really doubt the people making the game made that call, Sony wanted shit to show, PS4 is to be "The home of fighting games", remember? Have to have something other than SFV lined up, doubt SNK's new owners give a fuck either, they want to make mobile games and use the SNK IPs to "go Marvel" or whatever.

The new owners are betting more in pachinko than real games, so I wouldn't doubt if they cut the budget for this game.

Interview with translation
Quick Summary:

Yasuyuki Oda was the battle designer for SF4…..!
SNK are aware of public concerns over KOF14
Producer’s favourite is KOF94
Producer is amazed at popularity of KOF in China, but doesn’t mention which one ^^ (KOF 97')
KOF XIV is a new saga

battle designer for SF4
Well, that's certainly not encouraging.
KoF XIV is a new saga
Muh Shermie. At least Yamazaki, Vanessa, Whip and Mary are still alive, last I recall.

I could ignore the looks for KoF XIV, but seeing a former battle designer form SF4 being the director of this game?
I swear if this becomes a SF4 rip off I can actually give up on this franchise.

Also wtf is KoF98OL? I meant what really is it? I still don't have a clue what type of game is it. Another Dungeon Fighter?

Battle designer for SFIV? Uhhh...

Battle designer for SFIV? Uhhh...

He may be the director of SFIV but it doesn't mean it will be anything like SFIV.

To answer your question about KOF98OL it is a cellphone game for smartphones.

When's Rock Howard?
I would say never, but since they have a corporate overlord now I wonder if that's going to change, you can't bring back Geese, starting a new saga would be perfect for bringing in Rock.

Actually, saying that, I think that's completely plausible.

Geese is currently still alive in KoF canon. He's only dead in the FF \ Garou continuity.

the only person that actually dies in KoF is Rugal
and even then it's more like a vacation for him
he comes back whenever

He's currently vacationing in SFV, apparently.

Well he's more like the Santa Clause of KoF.

Upon further info, it turns out that Yasuyuki Oda has worked with SNK during it's golden years that includes Real Bout FF and Garou. Shoutouts to Frionel (he's pretty close to SNK Playmore staff) for providing some in-site info.

Dimps was founded by golden age SNK people, they still made SFIV.

Last Blade 3 please.
