USA [May 27-29] Combo Breaker 2016 (Chicago, IL)

I'm sorry but I can't remember. The only girls I remember was a black girl (dapurplesharpie), the Valentine cosplayer, a girl with blue hair, and a girl with black (brown?) hair and eye shadow.

Yeah I'm bummed that I didn't get to meet you as we have played one another a lot online.

And you always win.
s0f3Luy.jpg

Well...
You woulda won a dozen times over since this was my first time playing offline. XD

Shoutouts to all the people whose Skull I flipped.

Shoutouts to all the people who called Beast + Tag cheap.

Shoutouts to all the #benchboys

See me in Resistance.

I just woke up after having gotten in. If I didn't pour my heart out to you, it's probably because I didn't have the chance. I love like 90% of you jerks. The saddest part of the weekend was the handful of people to whom I didn't get to say goodbye.

I think I finally realized (on the flight home) that my heart belongs here with you, which is saying a lot considering the amount of stuff I do and have done outside of this game and community. That's not an easy realization for a person like me to make. It does make it so much easier for me to look forward to the amazingness of future events.

To all of those whose first tournament this was: I'm super stoked you could make it. Our tournament experiences are better than those of other games. Stick around and you'll have the time of your life.

See you at CEOtaku. (Or the side tournament at CEO proper)

There really isn't that much difference playing offline as Skullgirls has crazy good netcode.

I did worse offline since I felt a bit self-conscious about playing with lots of people around. I think it'll be alright the next time I go out to a major event. ^w^

OK, I've got a bit of a spiel I've been wanting to go on for a bit, but wanted to sit a day to simmer a bit before I posted anything.
I didn't want to be a downer in the main thread, but some stuff happened at CB that I feel like we, as a community, need to address. A new player came to CB, her first ever FGC event. It's also quite possibly her last one. The number of people and degree to which people were creeping on her blew my mind. Seriously, pulling someone away from a casual set so you can compliment her panties is not OK in any world. Now, I'm not gonna call out any names. Mostly that's because I don't know the names of almost anyone that did this. Besides, the SG community was almost universally cool with her. The one negative experience she had in our little corner of the FGC world will have to be dealt with, but I want to bring up the topic at large. I feel like we shouldn't have to be the creep police for the FGC at large, but I also feel like we should be. This is one of the friendliest, huggiest nerd communities I've ever been a part of. Unfortunately, we're attached by proximity to the FGC as a whole. The FGC doesn't have the best reputation to begin with and frankly, a lot of folks aren't interested in fighting that reputation. More significantly, some live up to that reputation. I want us to police ourselves, we shouldn't act in inappropriate ways and we shouldn't tolerate it within the SGC. At a much bigger level, I think we need to police the other groups as well. We need to be able to go to someone acting like an ass and tell them to cut that shit out. The old arcade culture doesn't so much need to die as it needs to change. I don't care if trash talk lives on, it's the abuse towards new players that needs to die. A year or two ago, this kind of stuff was easy. We were on the fringes, playing on laptops in the hotel lobby. Now? We're main stage during prime time on Team Spooky's channel. I heard that the 10v10 pulled in front page on twitch with over 10k unique viewers. We shouldn't tolerate the kind of shitty behavior, either within or without our community. There's enough of us now that we can stand up for the newbies. When folks are shitting on new players, we can be there for them. If some Elphelt cosplayer is getting creeped on, we can step in and keep the vouyers and grabby folks away. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, find one of the loudmouths in our community. Heaven knows there's enough of us in the SGC. We shouldn't just be a safe space for newcomers, we should actively spread that safe space.

And yes, I recognize the irony of us creating a safe space while possibly wearing big titty ninja nurse t-shirts.

It's not like the girl was alone. I'm sure we've all heard about Noel Brown and Grope Gate that happened Sunday night. It is unbelievable how some guys just can't keep their hands to themselves and think before they speak. It is sad because while the FGC is diverse when it comes to ethnic background, it really isn't at all when it comes to sex. I'd say the male to female ratio was like 40:1. I could only imagine what darpurple sharpie, grodie, and sunsetradiance have to deal with. People have to keep in mind that the women in the venue are their to game and not to find a new mate. If you want to hit on girls go to the bar, club, or somewhere similar but not in a gaming tournament. That said, I think an obvious reason for this is a fair share of guys in the FGC are a bunch of nerds with dusty dicks so when they come across a female they have no idea what to do. This is how I imagine some of these low lives handle their interactions.

In terms of being friendly to new players, personally I feel that the fighting game community is reasonable with that. People always seem eager to teach others about their game of choice. That said things have come a LONG way over the past ten years. Part of what drove me away from the FGC almost a decade ago was how toxic the community was. Sites like shoryuken.com were horrible with terrible posters and equally terrible moderators. I'd get made fun of for asking basic questions. This also wasn't limited to just message boards, when playing games online I would regularly get messages about how I was a "scrub" or how I "cheese my way to win." Again, things are much better now, but even then so you don't have to look far to find similar behavior. Even on Facebook FGC groups there are some stupid behavior. One thing that immediately stands out is how a guy in the Chicago area wanted to start a Street Fighter V tournament. People immediately jumped on him for being stupid due to the fact that the event was going to be held in a suburb (rather than in the city proper), and that he wanted to make a slight profit off of the event. It was ridiculous.

Not to take away from the importance of your point at all, but the viewer count reached just over 12k while I was watching. The peak might have been higher - I had to duck out after Caio got knocked out.

Btw I missed the 10v10. Is there a vod of it out there?

Yikes, I had no idea that was going on...worries like that were in the back of my mind at times, but I had no idea stuff like that was happening at CB...</3

Btw I missed the 10v10. Is there a vod of it out there?

Yeah, where are the vods? I'd like to recap the awesomeness of the tourney play. TTwTT

Oh, that was you Sunset? With the tiny fighting stick?

I'm really happy for the people that walked up to me and asked me for games, since I wanted to play everyone, but couldn't.

And yet again, we keep the tradition of me and Peanuts not playing casuals at a tourney

This was an interesting tournament for me. I had a lot of incorrect impressions of people that the community hugged out of me, and I'm feeling a lot better about Skullgirls, being in a tournament I'm unlikely to win for the long-term prospect of improvement, and my ability to make mistakes without being ridiculed. Sorry I was so pissy, especially on Saturday. There's a lot of internal reasons for that, but I don't really feel like going into it in public. The reason I am willing to go into in public was that I was partly convinced that poor performance was considered justified grounds for ridicule, or at least for being ignored, but that was thankfully unfounded. @MegaMix went into more detail about why I would feel that way.

On a more positive note, holy crap did we ever take advantage of 24/7 venue. The only other game I saw played at the midnight hours was GGXrd (on one setup, and part of that was me and @akindhobo) and briefly Tekken Ball.

Oh yeah, the pool party was also neat. Granted I didn't have swim trunks, but I feel like I still participated a little in the ball games. My elbow and arm is feeling better now, in case anyone was worried.

Anyway, some shoutouts:

@render for bringing Indivisible and being a generally swell guy as always. Running the prototype (36min no death Clearest! is a nice bit of success) was a nice change of pace that really helped my mood a lot, as was learning that my feeling of being overwhelmed by Skullgirls is not uniquely mine.

@renderling I wish I realized you were the graphics programmer, because I would have loved to talk in depth about how you are doing your work (even if my work is more industry visualization than games, and involves an OpenGL 3.3-based forward renderer, ironically).

@joshb911, @MegaMix, @knotd, and @akindhobo for being great roommates. Also, @knotd is a super generous guy and would probably never say it themselves. Also, @akindhobo, if you want to learn more Guilty Gear basics check out Guilty Gear Crash Course. 7AM GGXrd tutorializing while nearly hallucinating from fatigue was fun.

@Broseidon Rex and @dapurplesharpie for always making me feel welcome, even when I'm sure I'm frustrating, granted I didn't get to talk to @dapurplesharpie as much as last year.

@Psychopath sorry again for exploding at/near you, and I'm glad we could chat about it and get to know each other better afterwards.

@carbonbae Great Val cosplay, and also you just seemed pretty cool, even though I'm sure you were fairly anxious (since you said something about that).

@mcpeanuts for bringing Flash Duel. I'd never played it before and always wanted to, and now that I have I'm really impressed. I'm not sure how deep it is, but Setsuki is a blast to play: Consequences, what consequences?

@Natezer for playing me in Flash Duel, and generally keeping that table going. That being said, Vendetta against a newcomer is kinda cruel, though I suppose so was Setsuki.

@Skarmand for being helpful and kind as always, though I do know what I need to work on, so while I appreciate more advice I want to internalize the current set of it first. Also, good job representing Canada.

@Clawsome Bombs for playing me in the best set I had all weekend, being an all-around supportive person, and also helping me indirectly learn exactly what my next focus needs to be for improvement (combo consistency). I'm still facepalming at winning neutral 6 times in a row and only taking off 90% health solo vs duo.

@matlokholmes and @Shadowstew Good to see you two again, though we didn't get to chat much this year.

@Fizzxwizz I finally got to meet you in person, that was neat, though we didn't talk much.

@FuLLBLeeD Also nice to see you again, even if I'm not playing Fortune anymore.

The woman with the stickered-up Hori Mini 3 (@Grodie?). I kinda wanted to say hi, partly because I have that stick as well (was my first, minus the stickers), but I never got the chance.

There was also a BB player who's tag I forgot, and who probably isn't here, but they laid down a crash course for Noel, which I hope I remembered something from.

@Dolfinh IIRC I played BBCPEX against you a bit, and that was fun.

@PocketRumbleDev Thanks for bringing the game and bringing June with it, because I'm now super excited to play her again. I find that a bit weird because I generally gravitate towards rushdown, but as I said in person she's Athena + Dizzy, and I like those two characters.

@Rizil for keeping me company at O'Hare before we left. Too bad we couldn't go hunting, though.

@thehadou for organizing the whole thing. This was so much roomier than last year, and the casuals setups were a godsend. I kinda wish the location wasn't so remote, but the Mega Center seemed well suited to the event.

I probably missed a bunch of you, but I appreciated seeing you too.
Everyone 25 and older could pass as a high school student.

Funny story, I started taking Voice Acting lessons a couple months ago, and one of the first things I learned is that I have a much easier time doing 14-year-olds than deep-voiced adults, so it's not just looks.

Nope, on the contrary, I was lugging around a rather hefty Hori Rap 3 and kept bumping into people awkwardly with my bag. TTwTT (Great solo Fortune stuff, I wanted to fight you after seeing Top 16, but was scurred and didn't want to embarrass myself lolz.)

I think we have whats needed to set an example of proper respect to others, i did noticed what alexpi said, i also got called an alien by gllty when playing sfv casuals (though i think according to law is technically right but you dont go telling people stuff) i just ignored it since i am a bureaocrat and i am used to getting called worse names at work, but others might get really feel offended and not welcome.

Top 16: Link (Twitch)
10v10: Link (starts at 8:26:30 if the link screws up)

There was also some stuff on bgcallisto (pools, iirc?), but I can't find it. I'm sure he'll have it on YT before long.

Nuuuuu, I'm sorry that happened, you're so nice. TTwTT

ah, sorry for the confusion. Also, I'm usually the shy one when asking people I've never played before in casuals, something I hope to rectify in the next tourney. Just hit me uo online and we'll play a set (preferably PSN, but I think I remember running into your name on steam, so that's fine too)

Was anyone TOLD? I heard nothing about this until now, but if I had I'd have done something immediately.
There are TOs, there are bracket runners, there are loud community members. What happened to speaking up?

If what I heard from the grapevine is correct, Rick got himself involved with resolving the situation and has publicly denounced that type of behavior on Twitter without naming any names.

This incident, as well as others, are within the attention of our staff and are currently being investigated. Please allow us to handle it. The last thing we need is a public witch hunt right now. It's a messy situation. But thank you all for your concerns.

I will state right here and now that if you EVER see or hear anything of this nature, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE report it to someone on the staff immediately. We all take these issues very seriously and it is nothing to take lightly. Do your part to help keep the community welcome to everyone.

Most of the stuff I didn't see directly and didn't fully find out about until later on Sunday. I'd certainly have gotten my dander up if I would've found out earlier.

Oh, and @ninja-nutria, gllty is kind of a gigantic bitch. I don't know why, but St. Louis has a lot of jerkwad SF players. She's legit shit talked on me for not accepting money matches in games I don't play.

I find some irony over an Asian-American calling a Mexican an "alien". You would think that being a minority in the country she would know to be more sensitive toward these issues.

Was anyone TOLD?

I'm not going to say much but I can say that in previous events when I have told staff, TOs, or even the event holder themselves that something happened like this, I was told to just let it go or that that's just the way he is. Because I've been told this in the past, I've not reported anything that happened to me or even really talked about it with a few exceptions.

Genuinely, the only reason I even mentioned this particular event to certain people was because it wasn't happening to me and this was a new person who didn't have any ties to the community.

I'm really glad that everyone is taking this seriously and that staff is treating this differently than my past experiences. This is literally the first time I've seen an event treat an issue like this and it makes me feel better about reporting things like this in the future. I can't tell you how annoying it is to hear people dismiss claims that something happened to you just because you aren't as popular, famous, or even well-known.

Hope this starts a serious conversation as well.

I also hate to be this person, but we should probably have this conversation in a different thread for fear of derailing this one.

Oh, and I already talked to worldgem. he said he'd split the thread if it gets too much.

This is most likely the case everywhere because FGC TOs and staff are usually volunteers who don't care or kids who have no experience with how to handle real life problems like this and are to young and naive to understand the seriousness of the matter.

I'm not saying majors should start hiring body guards or anything, but the FGC is growing and maybe in the pre-tournament staff meeting should address that if any incidents happen, to report it to the TO and write an incident report (not just for sexual assault, but for fights, verbal assaults and other matters too).

@SCOTT_WHALE for the pizza and the Squigly advice. Even though you're never going to read this shoutouts to KBrad for making me laugh so hard I couldn't get it together enough to just give him a slice of the damn pizza.

what pizza :| there was a slide of pizza i don't remember of?

This is me? Ugly wannabe Goth???
I feel that you took my post the wrong way. I didn't imply that you were goth. It isn't like I said you were wearing a black trench coat with piercings all over your face. For what its worth I liked your style a lot and you pull it off very well.

I was really glad I got to go to CB this year, after missing it the last.

Not gonna do shouldouts because time but I love all of you.

Also I beat @dapurplesharpie in a FT5 and that's all that matters.

And to anyone who I played, if I started shouting "I WON!!" when I teched a throw - sorry. That's a win in my book. I suck balls at teching throws.

@ anyone who gave me tips to improve - thanks! :D

That sounds like terribly irresponsible people! "That's just the way he is" is some serious BS.
Next time, if nobody else with real power is around, you tell me.

Ok Shoutouts

Team Za Wardo
@Fuzzy_Snugs Dude You were a beast in the 10v10, and I knew lately you haven't really been feeling SG, but dang did you kill it. Playing you in Vsav I got that work quick. Don't think I won a single game, but I'm gonna work on it.

@Dolfinh Thanks a lot for being our team captain and helping organize all this. I know you had a lot going on IRL so you kinda doing your own thing, but I'm glad that I've connected w/ you more. I feel like we still have a lot more to talk about, and if you want I'm always here to listen. You'll go far in BB I believe in ya, but see my Kagura tho. <3

@CaioLugon it was great to meet you in person. You are definitely a strong player. You've proved that. One day if I ever visit Brazil I'll be looking for you and Acido!

@Elda Taluda Ahhh I was so happy to see you again. I look up to you a lot in and outside the game. I know both you and your lady are busy w/ work, but anytime you guys wanna play just shoot me a txt. Also you are officially my training partner for SG. I know we both wanted to do better in Top 8, and I know we can. Next year I want us both to make top 3!

@Duckator BOBBEH! Great talking to you again. We don't talk or play much, but it's always a pleasure. Was hoping we would do karaoke so I could sing Bad Apple with you. Next time maybe.

@Hirokuni THE SILENT PROTECTOR. Teaching ppl how to fully body my character in Blazblue. It was fun to hang out w/ you Hiro. We've known each other for a while, but we've never really hanged out til now. As cool in person as you are online, but my fondest memory of you is going to be when I misheard you saying there was an +R cab in the reg hall, and booked it only to cry on the carpet floor when I found out I was mistaken.

@159man isn't on SH, but YOU'RE SO COOL! SUGOI SUGOI!

@Skarmand King of the cuteboys. Good to see you again Skar. I won't lie a little sad I lost to you in top 8, but I knew were going to be a tough opponent. Next time I got you tho!

@Swiftfox-Dash Who are you again? Do I know you? :P Kidding. Sorry if I come across as cold to you sometimes TJ. I think you're really funny. Once I'm off this diet we'll go get milkshakes.

@Yaya It was great to finally meet the creater of Squig/Band. We didn't talk or play much either, but it was a pleasure.

Team EC
@keninblack Patrick I'm so happy that you've decided to stick w/ the game. We've seen too many og's leave SG, and if you left it would NOT be the same. Wish you the best in all your irl and sf5 endeavors.

@SonicFox5000 P I N A || C O L A D A || B O Y S. B R E A K || Y A || N E C K || F I L I A || M I X U P || B O Y S. Hah you always amaze me with the amount of skill and talent you have in any video game you play. Mad respect for you dude. I'm still aiming for you tho.

@LazyBakemono It was great hanging out and playing BB w/ you. I know Kag still gets you tight, but that's everyone there first time learning a new mu in that game. Sorry I didn't recall you from last year, but you have definitely left a lasting impression on me. Ah man here comes Lazy with his cheap ass team ready to kick my shit in ugh ha ugh ha.

@Lethalmind It was great seeing you again fam. I haven't seen you since NEC2014, and that was far too long for my liking. You played very well in pools, and i was sure you were gonna make it out, but then I remember you never fought Mike before, and that can be a trip. I'm gonna try to make it out to New Your to see you guys eventually this yr or the next. Stay cool.

@ShadeMoneh Yung Shade when you did the Ken 3s taunt during the 10v10 I lost it. You are really cool, but you really shouldn't let being a meme get to you that only makes it worse. Playing casuals w/ you on Sunday was a blast, and I admire how you're still trying to get stronger. You can do it!

@PME Holy shit the fortune tech you come up with is something else. I seriously believe that if you went your normal duo our match in top16 might have been a different story, but ah well. It was a pleasure meeting and playing you. When you made it out of the Fortune death pool that blew my mind. Also when you went "beat me w/ my character. Hah ok." I have mad respect for that pride.

@Adeveis Omg it was so great to finally meet you after all this time! Seeing you takes me back to the old days when we use to run the same team, and I was like "whose this dude jacking my shit!?" Haha no, but you have definitely rep'd the PSN boys well. Playing SG, and Naruto w/ you was a lot of fun. (Gaara's cheap, and New Storm games suck) Can't wait to see you again.

@Saske Budshredder420. Haha it was good to see you again bud. We need to hang more.

@cloudKing211 GladKong aaaahhhh cloud you are easily one of my favorite ppl in the SGC. You're so nice, and I remember when you were a cute little solo val. You've come along way and should definitely be proud. Hope going back to ps3 pad will help you out...or you could always play stick :^)

@mcpeanuts 610maaaaaaaan. I'm a little sad I didn't get play you or enjoy a drink with you, but one of these days we'll get around to it. Stay cool dude.

My Socal fam
@Mike_Z Damn you have gotten so good in the short time you've actually had to practice and play. Ever since joining this community you've taught, and have helped me alot. Much love and respect you. More than I'll probably ever admit. But I gotta keep getting strong so there'll be at least one game you can't touch me in, cuz I hella can't touch you and that Pot. >.>

@render Senpai we didn't get a chance to play AC :(. Ah well it was great seeing you again dude. Even though we both live in Socal I know you're hella busy between work and life so I'm grateful for being able to see you in Chicago. Thanks for rooting for me in SG. Look up to you a lot, and I want to be as good a Johnny player as you are one day.

@Some Person I know SG isn't your main focus anymore, but I'm super happy that you still play the game. You're so much fun to be around like when we were talking in the room w/ the others. Mario party 6 is ok I guess. Not sorry I tried to kill you after the way you described TFH tho.

@Fosh Easily my favorite furry of the SGC. Ever since you moved down to Socal I've bonded w/ you a lot more. It's really fun to be in your company, and I respect the hell out of your double.

@Verdant Brave Ahh it was nice to have a friendly face as a roomie. And when you told that chick in the elevator she had a nice ass, but was refering to the pillow she had I lost it. Hope you made it home safely. Love ya Verd.

@worldjem this is the second time I've roomed w/ you. Thanks a lot for taking care of that, because I'm super lazy and there was no way I was gonna get around to it. Good stuff for putting me in losers. Kinda tight, but as Shade says "YEAH BOI THIS IS TOURNAMENT!" Great to see you again my guy.

@Grangach I believe this was the first time I've ever met you. Definitely was a pleasure. Hope I wasn't a bad bed mate tho. You were very helpful when it came to the uber and other situations. Stay cool!

@Zidiane & @dapurplesharpie It was great seeing you two again as well. Zid you're still an amazing player. I just think you need to find characters that work for you. Sharpie all I gotta say is you're awesome and I would have lost my money betting on BrokenLoose. You two are cute together.

@Kai Thank you for all that you do in supporting the community. I greatly appreciate it. You and your family are beautiful, and I hope to see you again next year.

@Mr Peck Thanks for showing up and playing with us. it's always a pleasure to talk and hangout with you. I'm kinda sad you stopped playing Filia because I found both her and your peacock to be very unique. Also when you said "You've gotta fight me next in top16 so I guess you think you got a free win." DON'T. EVER. SAY. THAT. You're so strong, and not free in the slightest. Our match in top16 was super close. Anyway hope to see you again soon.

@zeknife Thank you for making it all the way out from Sweden.(I believe?) Was great talking to you and watching you play in person. Your resemblance to Liam is almost uncanny. Also it was very nice of you to help 159man out since his english was a little poor. I respect you a lot for that.

@Negus Eyoel The King. Was super fun hanging out w/ you Neggles it always is. Get bodied on the departing and returning flight. Bad Luck Eyoel lives on. Sorry if I bugged you the last night of CB when I was hammered, but I enjoy hanging out w/ ya.

@Hopscawtch Ahhh Hops it's so much fun being around you dude. Like on Thursday night when I told you to see me in Melty. Pretty sure I can't even touch that Ryougi tho. Also getting hype w/ you for guilty gear top 8 was a blast. Hope life starts looking up for you my man. Can't wait to see you again.

@LSP Daaaaaaaany. When Rev drops you got 2 weeks my son then you better square up cuz your Ram is gonna catch these mist finers so quick you don't even know. Haaaaaaaaah mad love for you Danny. I'm upset w/ myself I didn't really get to know/hangout with you until now. Stay cool.

@WarpedEcho YungWarped. Future so bright he has to wear two pairs of shades. It's always a great to hang around you my man. You are a truly caring individual and I hope nothing but the best for you.

@dekillsage Sage. You're as smug irl as your avatar and it slays me. Sorry we didn't get to play SG, and I think you're a really great player. I feel as though you're one of the few ppl that can actually challenge Sonic, and it's been that way for a very long time. We gotta step it up. Can't have you do all the work. Was good seeing you my man. Best of luck in your quest for glory in Smash 4.

@fenster Ahhhh Fen I had so much fun talking w/ you through out the trip. I felt like I bonded with you so much, and I can't wait to see you again. I know you're upset that you didn't make it out of pools, but don't stress it. We're gonna grind out SG until we both get strong enough to achieve our goals.

@drewski Lol drewski you're awesome man, and let no one tell you otherwise. Still moves me that you opened your home to me back at NEC2014. You're one of my favorite ppl man. Hope to see you again soon.

@Outlaw_Spike We finally had that drink, and talked about our mu. It was more of a good time than I was expecting. You're a really cool dude, and I hope to see you at more tourneys.

@joshb911 Online you are a grade A fuckboi, but offline you're pretty cool. Try to be the more like the offline you, and I promise ppl will come to give you less shit. You're good guy. Til next time.

@Beamsprouts BeamySqueamy!! Haha it's always good to see you my man. Always have a good time whenever I'm in your company, and I hope to make a trip up to Norcal to see you soon.

@EFHRK Stay free scrub! <3

To anyone I've missed my apologies. Had an amazing time, and I hope to see more faces next year. Also to anyone who was annoyed by me being hammered to high hell on Sunday night my apologies. It's just I've never been in that state around so many ppl I like so it was great. :D

I just had no confidence in my Parasoul during pools, but I felt way better by the time that top 16 started. I'm putting a ridiculous amount of effort into making top 3 (ideally top 1) at the next event, don't worry!
