So, if you’re lucky, you’ve received an email inviting you to join the Skullgirls Mobile Closed Beta! This thread is to provide some high level information about the game, and to answer any questions that will no doubt pop-up along the way.

GAMEPLAY TIPS
A few tips to help make sure you get the most of the Beta Build!

Equip your Special Moves!
There’s a bug currently where the Special Moves that are auto-equipped in the Tutorial (Battle Butt, Brass Knuckles, and George’s Day Out) are UNequipped once the tutorial sequence is over. Be sure to tap on your character cards (via Collection or Team Selection) to re-equip your Specials!

Use Story Mode to organically build your Collection
Completing fights in story mode earns you EXP for your characters and Relics that will help unlock additional characters and Special Moves. Although there are ways to quickly unlock/upgrade all of the characters (see below) we would love to get your “natural” feedback on how this progression feels in terms of gathering new characters and special moves, difficulty ramp up, etc.

In particular, once you have characters in the Level 8-10 range, we recommend checking out Events to experience some unique battle conditions that will cause you to rethink how you use your team!

Don’t have much time? Use Debug Relics!
If you go to the RELICS screen and scroll to the bottom, you can use special Beta-only Relics to unlock all Bronze Characters and ALL the Special Moves currently enabled for those characters.

Unlock More Abilities via SKILL TREES
Every character has a full Skill Tree that unlocks Blockbusters, Signature Abilities, and new moves you can use in combat (extended combos, Trip attacks, Charge Attacks, etc). The game plays very differently when you have your full compliment of moves and abilities!

We have yet to implement a full tutorial for this system, so it might be easy to miss! To access the Skill Tree, simply tap on a Character Card (from Match Preview or in your Collection) and then tap on the Skill Tree button.

If you need Skill Points (earned by Leveling Up or getting Duplicate Characters), you can either tap on the Character Level on the Details screen to automatically level them up or you can buy the FREE Beta-only Bronze Character relic in bulk on the RELICS screen.

If you need Canopy Coins you can also “buy” Beta-only Canopy Coin Relics on the RELICS screen to stock up!

Unlock Trip Attacks!
Trip Attacks (activated in gameplay by Swiping Down) are currently unlocked very early in every character's Skill Tree. That said, they are SUPER useful to help extend combos! We recommend unlocking them as soon as possible!

KNOWN ISSUES
A few known issues that will be fixed in future iterations of the build!

Android File Installation Interruption Issues
If your connection is interrupted while downloading the initial files for Android your download may not resume. Deleting the app and reinstalling it from scratch should fix this issue.

Tutorial is Breakable!
If you tap-spam at certain spots during the tutorial, you can enter some awkward, potential non-progression states. We’re ironing those out as we speak -- in the meantime, don’t do it! Please?

I am currently waiting for my download link too. I got the notice email, heres hoping that I get in.

Everyone that signed up gets an email no matter what. Selected testers get additional emails with more info. :)
 
The email saying: The Skullgirls Mobile Closed Beta Has Arrived! is not the same email that gets you into the beta, I believe.

 
So wait are the download keys sent out already?
 
I think iOS users have gotten their keys already.
I'm Android and I've yet to see anything from Google come through.
 
If you're in the Beta, you'll get TWO emails from us (one a general announcement, and another with more instructions). If you received two emails from us, then you're in the first wave!

The iOS builds have been sent out, but the Google Play links are taking longer than expected to generate.

We'll share them as soon as they're live -- apologies for the delay!

Zidiane: The Bronze Beta Relic will grant you all 6 BRONZE characters that are in the Beta Build. There are SILVER characters which are discoverable in the Beta build as well, but you need to get them via Relics earned in Story Mode (and/or purchased via Theonite).

We may make more characters available right from the get go in a future Beta update, but we wanted to focus attention on those variants for now.

Guess this is a no-go for me. I think I signed up fairly early for the beta when the game was announced but my iphone 5C might not be good enough I guess.

Is there anything that participants of the closed beta should be aware of/give extra consideration to when discussing or showing the game to non-participants?

I'm not talking about an NDA. That requires a signature, which would be hard to miss. My question is literal, and the answer might be something like, "no," or, "yes, when explaining the in-game economy to others, please remember that the store is currently wide open and that may affect your experience."

Really just that the game is not complete yet. (There's also a perma-note on the screen stating the same). :)

We're obviously still working out many things in many parts of the game. There's going to be weird bugs and such. There's also other features that will be in the final game not represented in the beta. People generally seem to be pretty cool about this though.

KAI: Great points! I've tried to cover things like that at a high level in the initial post, but I'm sure there are other things that I'll need to add depending on misconceptions folks might have.

At the end of the day, the game is pre-launch and we are specifically sharing it with the intention of getting everyone's feedback on the nuts and bolts of everything - from the economy to combat to the UI flow, etc. As such, if you are frustrated by something, we'd rather you let us know so we can address it instead of rage-tweeting it to the world. :)

Otherwise, we (perhaps foolishly!) trust your collective judgement on what and what not to share.

I signed for the beta with my IGG backer mail, a Hotmail account which is obviously different from my Google Play Gmail acc I've received the mail from Google Play to download the beta but it says the either the trial version hasn't been published yet or that it isn't available for my account. I hope it's the first one and I can try it tomorrow

So has there been any update on the android release of the game?

Everyone who got into the first wave of the Beta should have received an email from Google Play with instructions on how to access the build.

If you got an email saying you were in the Beta and haven't gotten this email, I would check your SPAM filters and - if that doesn't bear fruit - just email us at skullgirls@hiddenvariable.com and we'll get everything sorted out for you.

Hey all, Nick here from Hidden Variable. Just wanted to let everyone know that we’re going to be officially ending the closed beta at this time. To explain everything, I’ve decided to write it in a handy Q&A format. It’s like the voices in my head are interviewing each other! :D

Q: Boo. Why is the closed beta ending?
A: Good question, me! We’ve sent the beta out to roughly a few thousand players and gotten SO MUCH good feedback. We’re now distilling everything - bugs, ideas, improvements, etc - into stuff for us to bring to the game to make it better. We’re a small team so we are going to put 100% of the focus on the game’s development and to do that, we need to make sure everything we do from this moment forward is part of that goal. Unfortunately, even the closed beta takes a lot of time to manage.

Q: So when am I going to get my beta invites?

A: Since we’re ending the beta, we do not plan to send out any more invites. If you didn’t get in, remember the game IS going to come out so you WILL get to play it. :)

Q: Do I have to stop playing the beta?
A: Nope! We aren’t going to stop you from playing or sending us feedback, but we’re not going to keep updating it either. You should also keep in mind that someday in the future, the beta will no longer be available to download since we only have one slot per platform to use for this stuff.

Q: Will you do another beta in the future?
A: Not for this release, but we plan to call upon some of the most feedback-driven players for smaller, more focused testing in the future of the game. Seriously, you guys really help us out. :)

Q: Will my progress transfer over?
A: Nope. It will be a fresh start for everyone when we launch. This beta has been offline and as many of you noticed, we gave you access to certain debug features which is obviously not good for a live game. But we’re working on a TBD bonus for testers for the final game.

Q: I didn’t like a thing. Will you be fixing the specific thing I didn’t like?
A: Maybe! We obviously have to strike a balance as many people have feedback on both sides of the spectrum. We also have feedback that may just not be possible for a myriad of reasons. But rest assured we did this beta for feedback so we take it seriously.

Q: I found a bug! Will you be fixing my bug?
A: Oh man, bugs are the worst. We are going to do our best to fix em all.

Q: Did you get a haircut?

A: Oh my, thank you for noticing! But no, I didn't.

Q: Soooo… like… can I get into the beta?
A: You're killing me, Smalls!
