PUNCH PLANET - VERSION 0.5.2

Only thing I think is a bit off is Tyara's shield charges lack a bit of impact for my tastes. I'm mainly thinking to Cap's shield charge from Marvel vs Capcom, but I think the animation coming out faster and having impact or even slight camera shake upon impact would really sell how powerful her charge is.

Thanks for the feedback, TYara's shield definitely getting an animation upgrade at some point.

Id like to add that tyaras grabs don't visually read as grabs very well to me, the spear makes it look like a low instead of a throw. If she summoned some kind of lasso or gladiator net or something that can wrap around the opponent, or even have her toss them up in the air by hand, I think that would be more clear.

Her anti air grab needs more anticipation before the jump, maybe have her squat briefly before jumping.

Attacks lack impact, and I think you can solve this with better and bigger hitsparks. I just checked, and SFV is similar in that the models have limited limb deformity during attacks, but the large hitsparks hide that and give the hits weight. Your current hitsparks are too subtle to do that. Ideally you'd want a bunch of squash/stretch/smearing, but that's probably not cost effective.

How soon is soon?

What is the Punch Planet's philosophy on meter building? I noticed that meter is earned through both dishing out damage and taking damage, how much of a difference is there between the two? Are there other methods to build meter? For example, 3rd Strike allows building meter by whiffing strong attacks.

It appears balanced, I'm just curious about how much meter would be available in each round.

What is the Punch Planet's philosophy on meter building?

General criteria is:
- Meter for using special attacks (any special with a hit box)
- Meter for hitting with a move
- Meter for getting hit by a move

I used to give meter on normal usage (whiff) but decided to remove it, not a fan of the situation of both players sitting out of range of each other just whiffing moves for meter.

Balance of meter gain is always up in the air, got a few different values that allow me to tweak it globally and on a per move basis.

i think Dunk was more curious on the rates those different criteria provide when you try and meter gain.

It's on a per move basis right now, I need to do a pass on the meter gain system so that it's easier to manage and at this point I haven't done much balancing (other than some clear issues where it needed to be changed) around it.

I look forward to know more about it when it gets worked on.

Really? All games, especially fighting games, should employ the twelve principles of animation. And 3D fighters especially should employ squash and stretch wherever possible. Xrd is an amazing example of this, and it goes a very long way in making the characters feel truly alive, so I'd say it is quite cost effective.

I really like how the round names. Doesn't feel jarring with the lack of Round calls but still segways nicely. Lot of really nice details I'm seeing as I look more and more.

Cid's voice bugs me though ngl. I'll never get tired of Roy's though. Chew On This is still a meme amongst my friends XD

How does it handle?
Is it rollback or delay based for now?

We have licensed GGPO for the game. Still some optimizations to be done but in general it's feeling pretty good.

Oh boy, just one more day!

I've found a couple of bugs so far.

First is that after losing a single online match as Player 2, I went to Practice and my pick in the online match was still on the select screen as an image.
C7727E351B77765DADC2770853DEA6ABDF25AC37
This persisted after a Practice match, exiting to main menu and going back to it.

After restarting the game and checking out Dog's moves quick in Practice, I played a couple more online matches, then after that went back to Practice and when I just was sitting on the screen it automatically started up a Dog v Cid match, the one I had done before. Though I think it just used Palette 1 for both.

Also the control config gets reset every time the game restarts. Since everything else is saved I'm guessing that's not intentional.

Oh, and one time it crashed on startup and I got an error report. How do you want me to send that?

But anyway it's been fun. It's uh, pretty different but crispy. And I see that caped Boba Fett silhouette on the character selection. That or it's Marth.

Thanks Hiro, I will be focusing on fixing those lobby issues and adding saving / loading of controller mappings tomorrow

Hey man, just wanted to say congrats; I've been looking forward to this for a while now. The 4 character roster isn't my favorite, as I think some players are going to have trouble finding a character that speaks to them, but Tyara is gravy.

Look forward to putting some time into this.

Been having so much fun in the early access! this game is stunning I'm so impressed by it.

I love the characters a lot, especially Tyara, was really hoping she'd have like a She Hulk or Gamora color with green skin but the Blanka palette will have to do!

I usually am not into 360 motion grapplers but I'll make an exception for her, she's too fun.
Can't wait to see the game grow and hopefully find more people to play with because the game is starting off really strong.

Are people playing it online? I'm so far impressed with the gameplay (hate the boob physics on Ripley, but whatever, right?), but I can't seem to find matches. Are people playing online? I found a few lobbies, but the host would just sit there for an impressive amount of time. I've still yet to play another person.

yeah people are playing online. but it's mostly a "on call" situation where people are setting up matches in the discord.

That's due to there being no notification sound, but that will change eventually. Set up your own lobby to get fast matches.
