The Smash Bros Discussion Thread

I hope when you defeat Dracula you unlock Wario instead of the belmont’s, because Dracula realized Wario wats so much garlic he became a walking instant murder for him

Also has anyone noticed that they actually retroactively changed some of Villager’s skins to include darker skin tones? I say retroactively because I actually went back to check on the E3 footage and sure enough they were all light skinned there:

It’s funny because I remember complaining about Smash’s mediocre color alts back then (Palutena’s is still genuinely one of the worst alt color selection I’ve ever seen) and how Inklings’ alts existing made everyone else human look worse, specifically tied to refusing to change skin tone color is just creatively limiting yourself (especially in a game like Smash where most human characters are light skinned)

Again I think I’m spoiled by skullgirls hdvdjccvc

In case you guys were hoping Young Link would get a cool Final Smash, let me just dash those hopes right now.
It's still the fucking Triforce Slash.
He doesn't even turn into the Fierce Deity.

I'm going to say my peace on what I think about what Ultimate is to me at this moment of prelaunch. It's a great deluxe edition and a decent deal for what you get. Like 77% of the roster are graphical improved versions of the Wii U smash, with the exception of Link who now has a new skin and edited moveset. 2 out of 7 of the returning cast from Melee and Brawl are clones, and while it's nice to have them back, people kinda over state how impressive it is to have them back. Yes they had to make new models for them and code their movesets, but they didn't have to create a new moveset for them, so bug fixing and balancing where probably the hardest thing they had to do for them. But still nice to have and kinda impressive. I don't give a shit about levels, I'd rather have a focused core group of good levels that are from a range of games over having a large section of levels ranging from shit and then the 5 you're actually play on. The days worth of music is nice though. Spirit mode, namely World of Light, is promising though until we get confirmation of character interaction, I'm gonna be leery, same goes for Codex and Guidance.

You may notice that I didn't say anything about the new characters, in which if you go by the DLC price points would make the $60 price point worth it (if you also include the 7 returning characters as well). Thing is after Inklings, well technically Ridley, the smash community kept getting exponentially worse after each direct. Which the directs really didn't help with this with how they're set up with "Here's a couple of cool characters, and now for a bunch of characters that a lot of you wanted to play as but can't, because go fuck yourself :D. Also here's a special announcement character that fans of that character now are going to berate and harass you with :D". But it's mostly the level of harassment that gets to me, like it makes the Skullgirls Waifu Wars look like 7 year olds doing sissy slap fights by comparison. Not to mention the amount of death threats supposedly sky rocketed after the last direct. So post Ridley, there is gold among those characters, but I can't see them past the mound of shit. It's basically to the point that I'm hoping the 5 DLC characters are: Negative Man, Ninja Bread Man, Custer, Bubsy, and a Shrine to Mr. Iwata, just to give everyone the finger and remind them why they play games like smash. To get together with others and play with others and not to be absolute shits and assholes to one another.

care to send some examples of all this "toxicity"?

The Waluigi incident comes to mind, but I too would like some more examples, just for info.

Ok let's do a little time line then.

There was the 16 year old that was booed and received death threats for playing Bayo at EVO, admittedly not Ultimate related but still

There was the Waluigi incident, of course

There was a group of people going around sharing guro art of deconfirmed characters (namely Ashley) on public/semi public social media (like public Discord servers) as celebration. As well as other sorts of art and what not. (Not like X characters/ x characters fans tears sort of images as if your offended by those you need thicker skin)

and admittedly I may have put my foot in my mouth about this one, but supposedly death threats became more prevalent after the last Direct, though I can't find evidence of this I've just heard people talk about it vaguely

And there maybe more as after seeing guro art being flung around I decided to distant myself from everything smash.

Inklings literally dissolve when submerged in water.
Charmanders die if their flames go out so same goes for Charizard
Sonic historically has had a weakness with water (Slowed down, can't swim)
And Incineroar is a fire cat. He double hates water.
It'd be stupid not to have something referencing all four of their weaknesses to water, and it's better than instant death or sinking like a fucking stone regardless of percentage damage.

You know what I realized spirits won't be able to posses Kirby because he survived. I'm holding out that there's a story event that Kirby get's kidnapped so that 1 a story event of some kind happens 2 you get to fight Kirbys as well as the rest of the cast.

Do tell me that the "death threats" weren't just angry tweets, people sharing lian neeson memes or just the crowd booing because bayo was borderline broken when released? I mean, a decade later even pro players refuse to use Meta Knight on Melee.
And Divekick was developed around a big communal rant about an unbalanced move. would it count as "materialized toxicity"?

Waluigi was a big meme. If a bunch of trolls go overboard for something as dumb as bowsette, why wouldn't they with a joke with such a long tail?

Never seen people randomly throwing guro around, but may be just that i don't spend enough time on smash reddit. there's that, though

Just in case anyone was wondering, DLC line-up -has- already been determined.
Nintendo provided Sakurai and his team with a selection of characters, that Sakurai decided from based on what he could conceive, moveset-wise

So don't go assuming it'll just be the ballot on DLC, we may see some stranger choices coming

You have to take into account coming titles. a Smash character is a cross-promotional endeavor.

Mega Man was added before mega man 11 (and could be argued it was a "hype termometer" and proved there's still love for the character), for example.

So... which big or retro franchises could be staging a big comeback? that'd be a big clue about next chars

Yeah, thinking about what the options couldbe is probably what we're gonna be discussing for the next year or so.
I think it's more than likely upcoming titles, stuff that came out in the past few years, or stuff that's very very popular.
As such, definitely temper your expectations. The chances of some genius picks (Like Ninten or Pokey) are likely low, and like @DukeMagus said, it's possible there'll be retro franchises or old franchises returning as well.

I just wonder if any Indie games ended up smack dab on that list... I'd still like Sans or Frisk, but man, their chances just dropped big time.
Octoling still have a hat in this race? Their DLC's somewhat new...
I also wouldn't be surprised if there was a new Zelda character (particularly one of the Four Champions) on the list of options as well.

Based on how Sakurai worded it, the final dlc was only decided fairly recently, like, previous few days recently

Secondly, you have to remember that even if the selection was all Nintendo, Sakurai still picked what he thought worked best, so it's clear that they aren't just forcing promo picks on him

It sounds to me that it was more Nintendo sent Sakurai 5 characters and he could only veto if he felt somebody had no moveset potential.

That actually lines up with the DLC leak which also implies that Sakurai was present during at least one of the meetings where one of the characters was decided.

It's certainly very possible that Sakurai did have more influence on the DLC roster than he's implying. That just wasn't the impression I got from his first tweet.

Honestly, this feels more like it damns the leak if they only JUST NOW got the DLC roster locked down.
I imagine this was also kind of like how SNK let Harada decide DLC for Tekken.
They laid out a bunch of options, and he just thought Geese was the coolest

Honestly, this feels more like it damns the leak if they only JUST NOW got the DLC roster locked down.

The leak I'm talking about claimed that one character was decided (Minecraft Steve), one character may or may not have been decided (Square Enix rep), a third was literally in the middle of being discussed between the two companies (Cygames rep), and the other two were still undecided.

That lines up with today's information.

Leak's still fake to me, really doubt they'd pick one of THOSE characters.

But I'm pretty sure we can safely throw Geno into the incinerator if Nintendo had their pick of characters for Squeenix

I'm honestly not seeing many more 3rd party characters on the roster at this point

The licensing costs for Everyone Is Here were pretty Crazy, so I'm not sure if they want even more costs on their hands with the DLC.
At most I can picture one or two 3rd party reps on the pass, and the rest being 1st party

Apparently licensing fees and royalties are easier to discuss for DLC, so they're either going whole hog with Third Parties, or only a few.
Also, allegedly the discussions for a Granblue character in Smash Ultimate fell through, so that's one less.

One more thong to remember with this DLC pass.
Every single character gets a new stage and music to go with them.
So, remember. Either all new franchises, or distinct/important additions to existing ones (I still think Octoling has a hat in this race since the only Singleplayer stuff Splatoon has in Smash so far is the Hero Suit costume)

I have a new pipe dream, sense we have 3rd parties as NPCs I'm hoping we get some music from their games. Like getting Dance Through the Danger or Strike the Earth would be nice. Also getting some 1st party music of poplar spirits would be nice, like a new mix of Sami's theme would be nice. But one thing I want that will never happen Transformation from TWEWY, like come on Square.

I'd still count more third party chars: SNK is getting some small recognition again and they have a lot of old classics with them, and capcom is already on the train.

I'd bet on either dante or nero (nero has more potential for cool mechanics because of the arm) and someone from metal slug or samurai showdown, since one is a popular franchise from the oldies and just got a real game announced

I would love to see Geese or Rugal. lol

Jesus Christ that is not a good soundalike at all.
Why can't Nintendo just nut up and work with Union actors
that's kiiiiinda tricky when you have VAs from all over the map like the characters in smash do, as opposed to just pulling from the Union pool in cali
plus i know union stuff gets weird when you have stuff like like "This is Mario, he goes WAHOO and IT'S-A ME and those are all his lines" and also going "This is Pit, he has hundreds of lines because he has special conversations on his stage about them." and putting them on the same pay level. It's similar to why hardly any mobile games get dubbed (and why they go non-union when they do.)

still a shame they couldn't get a better soundalike tho, viridi sounds rough. Not a terrible cast overall, but her direction just feels off

The problem with Virdi's Recast is I don't hear a soundalike at all, if anything it sounds like someone doing a Bubbles from Powerpuff Girls impersonation and not doing a good job.

Agreed.

Still good stuff, though.

What if one of the DLC characters is Dante because Kamiya asked Nintendo to finally have Dante vs Bayonetta?
Would you guys be opposed to another combo heavy SSStylish character?
Or are you against one last "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry Series" joke?

I would legitimately be hype for Dante even if he really has nothing to do with Nintendo just because I love him so much as a character. (And yes, I know he was in Viewtiful Joe.)

Final Fantasy is a series that has had a fair number of games on Nintendo consoles. It's also got way more games than DMC, but all the early FFs were on NES/SNES.

Dante is in games on Nintendo consoles but Devil May Cry isn't.

Featuring Dante from Viewtiful Joe

Hey guys, heads up, apparently Smash Bros broke street date and people are already datamining the game.
Spoil tag relevant information if discussed in here.
Like me, and wanna avoid spoilers?
Here's what ya do.
Blacklist the following tags: Smash Bros spoilers, Smash Bros Ultimate Spoilers, Super Smash Bros spoilers, Super Smash Bros Ultimate spoilers on Tumblr, Twitter, or what have you.
Youtube is gonna be a lot tricker, block or remove recommended videos form your feed from Profasiagaming and Boss Fight Database, well known asshole spoilerers who put a TON of fucking spoilers/boss fight reveals in the THUMBNAILS of their videos, if you have add-ons, block those two outright.

It might also be worth your while to avoid watching Smash Bros videos at all until December 8th, so Youtube can't recommend spoil videos to you.

This could all be unjustified, and Ninendo could delete spoilers and datamining, but if you don't like spoilers, be careful.

Yeah I was trying to avoid seeing any new content from the new world of light mode or spirits or boss fights, since I'm gonna be playing this Smash from a mostly single player perspective and I want that to be fresh and new when I pick it up

Yeah, there's already a list of boss fights going around and one of the DLC characters is all but confirmed.

It's Monster Hunter. The series has its own icon and a bunch of music. Said music is listed in its own section in My Music instead of in the Other section.

There's also no Xenoblade X music whatsoever, which actually makes me think that Elma's chances are pretty decent. They'll need some music to include with her as DLC.
