To celebrate 9-ball day I resurrecting this tread (that and with fan pallets being made there is a high chance of getting more Touhou pallets so might as well :3 right). Also, with Salty Bets and their long line of "2hous" this tread seems somewhat relevant.

Lunatic player reporting in.

Pd: MoF is the easiest toho.

What's not to like about Touhou?
It's got a great (And pretty) setting, wonderful characters with memorable designs, and tough as nails gameplay, but with enough charm for people to enjoy it without playing it

I've played a lot of shmups of both the bullet hell and classic variety, and I definitely think Touhou is among the best. It's got good level and boss design, good pacing, lots of variety to the challenges. It might not be as difficult or as complex as your average Cave shooter, but it has the same sense of satisfaction in the overall design imo.

I like Embodiment of Scarlet Devil the most. Reason being that it has a lot of RNG/random influence in many of the spellcards, which is great because I love reaction.

I personally think the music and characters/setting are over-rated as heck. But I still greatly enjoy the music. The dialogue still gives me a headache though.

Oh yeah, OLD run I had from a while back. Not really playing for score.

Yeah, tried the games and they were just way too hard for me

Touhou is actually a pretty good place to start out with the bullet hell sub-genre. It's generally considered to be pretty forgiving compared to the rest of the sub-genre, at least on normal difficulty.

It's definitely an acquired skill, but naturally improving over time is of course a part of the fun.

I made it to China on EoSD at least.
My pupils were dilated and everything

Furthest I've made it on Lunatic with one credit is Patchouli (mostly just by improvising too, I hadn't played it in a while and haven't had time to practice lately).

First bullet hell shooter I played was Esp Ra.De (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESP_Ra.De.) which is actually pretty similar. I remember it took me like 30 credits to get halfway through the game my first time, ha ha.

Some of the stuff I can't even think of doing.
But I can't just watch the endings since ZUN doens't like people spoiling the endings

Don't worry, you'll improve naturally over time without even realizing it. That's how it usually goes.

In the mean time, memorization is usually a fantastic crutch for mastering stages.

I guess so.
But yeah, all the characters are great.

Trying to get into reading fanfics or doujins.
Especially that one of Mokou outliving Keine.
That's gonna hurt so good

Danbooru is a good place to search for fan art. You can apply a "no explicit" tag to your searches or search by rating, which makes it more convenient for me then Gelbooru.

I particularly like the artists Mazeran (Persona/Lovecraft themed character designs), and Sawasawa (some really classy pics, many of which are in black and white).

Safebooru too.

And ahahah. Sounds fun

I really wish Hopeless Masquerade had as much shelf-life as Scarlet Weather Rhapsody did for me. It feels like it was a much more short-lived game in comparison. Part of me suspects it might be because it feels so much floatier - it's more like a Dragonball Z fighter than a standard one. Which is more accurate to Touhou, but maybe not the most consistent set-up for a fighter. :p I overshoot things pretty easily and the combo system feels more limited as a result of the longer range play.

It's a shame since I loved SWR and Hisoutensoku to death, lol. Did anyone else have that feeling?

(Edit: Though I think they finally patched in playable Kokoro. I wonder if she was balanced or Boss OP?)

Really liked the most recent Touhou though. Aside from the screenflipping. ^^;

I love swr, my tenshi's in there ^w^

I played Yuyuko, Suika, and Sanae myself. ^^;

Wasn't as fond of the HM cast (Ten Desires is my least favorite Touhou group), though Byakuren was pretty great.

I'll always prefer Hisoutensoku in my opinion (though I love HM just because it it has Nitori in it <3 [don't judge])

I think I'm the only person on the internet who un-abashedly hates touhou. Except for one thing really, I like the covers fans do of a lot of the music. I'm a pretty big metal fan, and some of the metal covers are pretty awesome.

You should like the gameplay of the shmups. They are very well designed shmups with great level and boss design.

If you don't like shmups in general, you are a terrible person and you should feel bad.

I'm okay with hating on the aesthetic though, like I said I personally find the characters and setting of Touhou to be annoying to the point of provoking head aches.

I normally prefer side scrolling shooters and really, the game play feels like it's based off memorizing junk a lot of the time and well, I don't like that. I do enjoy shumps in general though. I really liked Otomedius and have gone out of my way to get 100% completion in it (well AFAIK, I played every character on the highest difficulty, unless I have to play through on the abysmall co-op or win on an easier difficulty to unlock something.) It's worth noting I very, very rarely go for 100% completion.

I find the characters abysmal though, which is my biggest gripe with the series.

Side scrolling as in on the ground (gravity like in Contra, or Metal Slug) or side scrolling as in horizontally scrolling shmup (Gradius, R-Type, etc.)?

Also it's funny you should say that, because I think Touhou is one shmup series that can't really be called "based on memorization".

As I said, Zun makes excellent use of RNG, making sure that you will not get past many bullet patterns unless you have good reaction. This keeps it satisfying on multiple playthroughs. Other then that, there's nothing much to "memorize" in boss fights that you can't figure out during your first encounter. And the difficulty of the games isn't even on the same level as something like Bug Princess on Ultra God Mode, so it's not like you're going to get FLOODED with bullets the way you would in that if you don't know the enemy spawn points and whatnot.

Really, any game with dedicated design can be made easier by memorization. The question is...does the game telegraph it's hazards fairly? Fairly enough that you have a fair shot at dodging them on your first try? I would say yes to both for Touhou (with a few exceptions obviously, it's a pretty long ass series, so a cheap spellcard here and there isn't too shocking).

Characters should not factor into your enjoyment of the gameplay. That being said though: Liking Otomedius but having a problem with Touhou's aesthetic?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

I never said I like Otomedius's characters, but I did really like the gameplay, except the Co-op mode, IIRC you shared lives, and no one I know could go thorugh the game without dying on me too much. I'd likely enjoy the game just as much, if not more if I were controlling the real Vic Viper. Also, by side-scrollers I actually meant games like Gradius and R-Type, but I did enjoy Contra alot (Hard Corps Uprising is supposed to be a Contra game isn't it? That's one of my favorites). I don't know, maybe I'll try the touhou games again, since the last time I tired was a long time ago. But not now, now is Rouge Legacy time.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Gradius too. Definitely one of my favorite franchises of all time.

Yeah, I heard the announcement earlier this year from ShmupsSystems. I hope it'll change his mind about never ever letting there be an official localization.

Amazing and hilarious video I stumbled upon today. This is supposed to be a parody, if you're not familiar with that no scope meme. The gameplay and tricks though are legitimately impressive.

"1v1 me scrub"

This guy also has some really impressive stuff on his channel, like some blind clears of the extra stages and whatnot.

Finally managed my first Lunatic difficulty 1 credit clear!

Touhou feels so right on a keyboard, I cant imagine playing it on a pad

Really I always preferred pad as I personally felt more in control and it's easier for me to press a shoulder button for bomb than accidentally pressing a key.

But yeah Touhou PS4 really interesting, but is that Reisen II

cus that would be awesome
