Why are anime producers scared to make long running anime ?

Bleach

that's why

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell#Animated_Films

"Ghost in the Shell: Arise is another animated iteration that takes place in yet another alternate setting"
"In 2002, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex premiered on Animax, presenting a new telling of Ghost in the Shell independent from the original manga"

Stop being retarded, thanks.

Alright faggot you want to start the name calling, then let's throw hands motherfucker. I planned to keep it as civil debate, but you can be the petty bitch if you so desire.

"In the film Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society, taking place two years following the resolution of the Individual Eleven incident, " Accidentally lost the specific link

Hmmmm Solid State Society takes place after SAC and is notably described as happening after an event in another section of the series. Sounds connected to me.

"The upcoming Ghost in the Shell: Arise anime project was detailed during an event by Bandai Visual last night in Japan. Arise will serve as a prequel story set during Motoko Kusanagi’s younger days and will be split up into four 50-minute animated movies." http://www.siliconera.com/2013/02/1...ise-is-a-prequel-check-out-the-first-trailer/

Oh wow a prequel. Just like a said before. That would also entail that it does in fact happen before another installment of the series. Almost as if they are connected somehow

And now we need to keep it civil with the name-calling because... seriously?

I think the main thing is, producers arent afraid to make long running anime, its just when someone runs the idea of an anime with no end in sight, its probably not a bright idea to invest money into making it.

the best way to deliver a story pitch is to give a clear goal and allow the people throwing money at it to know that their endeavors will not be in vain.

ergo, investing in a shorter anime is more wise than investing in something the person who pitched in the first place has no fucking clue of where it will end.

Shots fired. Shots returned.

Inherently, I take it as a sign that he knows he's wrong and has to cover for it somehow. Otherwise he wouldnt have made the discussion hostile.

Don't really know why he won't admit he's wrong, you can even google it, other people will tell you they're not related either. MyAnimeList also doesn't list them as sequels/prequels, the facts are there but he just nitpicks, there really isn't anything to say.

It's been a while since I've watched Ghost in the Shell, but let's see if I remember this correctly...
The original Ghost in the Shell manga has three volumes of chapters released and is the original source material.

The first Ghost in the Shell animated movie was the first...anime, the only followup to it is Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. Both are loosely based on existing chapters in the manga.

Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex is an alternate retelling (Laughing Man), followed by 2nd Gig (Individual Eleven) that is subsequently followed by Solid State Society (TITLE DROP)
The only similarities it has with the movie are the characters, and small references to the original movie at the end of 2nd Gig and Solid State Society in a very roundabout way.

Arise is another alternate retelling that I don't know much of because I haven't watched it yet.

In terms of continuity, Ghost in the Shell is a convoluted mess without knowing all this because while they're all alternate retellings, they all take a different place in time so it's easy to confuse them as a single continuous timeline.
As for the topic...that's how the franchise has been pretty strong. Being alternate retellings means the directors can have a good degree of freedom when it comes to creative control.
Compared to making an original anime, there's not as much wiggling room, but directors still have a lot more freedom compared to creating anime that are strict animated adaptations of manga.

On the other hand, that also meant we lost out some lesbian sex from the original manga :V

can we all just agree that gundam is awesome and be done with it
aside from seed
seed is trash

And 00. 00 wasn't all that great either.

season one was a passable series but i will say that season 2 was not good at all

I always forget.
Which Gundam is the one that has the Burning Finger
Whatever that one is.
That one is the best.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam. that one was great.

my personal favorite is Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory.

Stardust Memory is great mecha porn (and has The Winner and Men of Destiny) but my god if there's a character I don't dislike there

also Zeta, G, and Turn A
those are the best gundam series

Zeta I've heard is good but can be depressing and dark at times.
and Turn A i know is heavily underrated.

and I dont really see much in terms of bad characters in Stardust Memory.

Zeta probably has the most depressing ending of the series
ZZ fixes it but it's just kinda "damn son"

Not saying anybody should value my opinion, but if an anime has more than 3 or 4 seasons, I don't want to watch it. I just don't have time.

that's fine. not everybody likes long-running anime.

Honestly at that point I assume that the anime has a manga and I read that.

I'm more or less the same, though I judge more by the episode count than the number of series, and I'm normally game to watch the first series of something. That said, the only anime I've seen that I'd consider 'long' would be YuYu Hakusho.

What's wrong with Sword Art Online?

For me, my criticism of Sword Art Online is that the writing is bad because the main character is a mary-sue if not just an author's insert as the ultimate character. Kirito is a perfect character in that he just seems to be good because he's the main character. Up until episode 15, the fact Kirito was as good as he was is plausible due to him having more experience than most players to SAO because he was a beta player. That experience along with playing by himself allowed him to grind and break the game as a means to explain why he was so godlike and able to beat the programmer at his own game. After that though, he was just good because he was the main protagonist and every adversity he faced was resolved by the power of bullshit or convenience. There's never any suspense when watching or reading SAO (from what I heard. haven't read it) because of how Kirito is written.

Even smaller things just make that series annoying. Look at No Scope Online (my pet name for SAO2) for example: In one try on his first day in the game, he not only gets further than everyone else in the impossible game, he beats it. Why? Because we're to believe that he just understood the game better than everyone because he broke the game down to formula. Keep in mind Gun Gale Online is an MMO and eSports; Kirito knows how to play the game better than people that have been playing it for years in an MMO where people play for money. Then he proceeds to peace out competitors in the tournament with no problem. Bullshit. That's like someone picking up League of Legends for the first time and in the same day entering a tournament and winning it and it being explained that it's all because he played a little DOTA back in the day. Or someone buying and playing Skullgirls for the first day, entering Evo and winning it because he dabbled in MvC2 for a while.

Also I'm no SJW but I really, REALLY hated what they did to Asuna in the second half of the series. She went from this really cool and strong character to a damsel in distress. They turned an awesome protagonist that was a great supporting character and stood out on her own right into a helpless creature so the author could plant in another moe love interest character in the form of his cousin because wincest is a common trope in anime and we got to give the main character a harem of anime girls that follow him! But I digress, it ends up being a relationship that goes nowhere and doesn't contribute to the plot in the slightest which also left a sour taste with me.

My God what is whit you guys taking it so personal
It's just anime for God's sake

From what I know, they can't afford to make many episodes and/or quality animation because it costs a lot of money(I thought that whit the Skullgirls indiegogo people would finally learn how fucking hard animating is) and countrary to american shows, animes usually don't sell much outside the country. Most fans worldwide don't support their favourite anime. They download series illegally or support third parties that make merchandise illegally. It is not the end of the world but it does damage; if your favourite series gets cancelled and you didn't help you got nothing to complain about.

That's why I think they did genius whit the Space Dandy series; it's an anime made to be shared with the western audience. It's shared on the same dates, it has the Looney Tunes formula(die and rigenerate on next episode), an easy plot to follow, the dub is done well and the animation fits with it, sci-fi actions, that kind of french-belgian experimental feel sometimes(ep9, anyone?) and Johnny Bravo is the protagonist. I know people who don't like anime but still love Space Dandy.

I mean. As soon as you realize that the good guy wins 99% of the fights in any anime/cartoon/movie/book/comic book/video game, you start to realize that every "reason" a character wins is because that's how it was writen. It's not Kirito's fault, and the writer's only sin is not hiding it as well as others have.

Two things.

First, the way I see it, he levels like a Disgaea character. Hits a really high level, reincarnates, and brings the stats and skills with him to new games. He’s most likely gotten high level passive skills from SAO. I can imagine him already having a skill allowing him to predict the path of attacks, and since it was a skill that was never designed to be in GGO its OP in comparison to that game’s bullet path system.

Second, your analogy about dabbling in another game doesn’t work. He didn’t dabble in SAO, he lived and breathed it nonstop for over a year (iirc). That’s a big difference from casually playing MVC2 and winning Skullgirls your first day. I personally feel live Life-and-death-play > playing-for-money, but that may just be me. And to add to that, we already see top players from other games just hoping into new ones and winning the whole thing with a weeks practice in the FGC. There ain't but a handful of SG players who can beat Chris G (sadly) even though he's only played the game for a week or so back before SDE.

damsel in distress. Moe. wincest. harem! Doesn’t contribute to the plot.
How many Anime did that just describe? I’m sure wincest isn’t as common (even though iirc it's socially acceptable for cousins to get married in Japan), but still.

My God what is whit you guys taking it so personal

This, too. I mean, all in all, I can understand if someone dislikes it, but I don't see why it gets picked on specifically. It's not the creme da le creme of Anime, sure, but there's a lot worse out there. I see someone say "fuck SAO" every other week. IDGI.

First, I'm pretty sure he said at the end of Alfheim, he reset his stats so he could try anew though it's possible he did regain that skill. That or he's become fairly adapt at judging attacks after all of the fights he's won. But yeah, he clearly stated he converted his ALO avatar into a GGO one via the World Seed, something that's been established can be done. (That's why Klein, Lisbeth, Agil, ect. look the same in ALO that they did in SAO: They converted their player avatars)

And second, it was actually two years in SAO and SAOII takes place after a year time-skip so he's been playing Alfheim off and on again during that time.

I see someone say "fuck SAO" every other week.

Welcome to my world. I like SAO and yet I still find major flaws that I rant about all the time that should've been rewritten or altered. But even then it's not this insepid piece of garbage people have been telling me it is this whole time.

I WILL however say it's a prime example of what happens when you try to condense two seasons' worth of material into one and how it's an example of doing this 26-episode long series thing wrong. The ALO arc should've been Season 2 while Season 1 just focused solely on SAO. And that both seasons should've been at least 30 episodes at minimum.

I thought I remembered him using a SAO sword skill in the fantasy one? And in the fantasy one, he was looking at all the stuff he had from SAO and some of it was incompatible with the new game, meaning he did bring his things with him. Hmm, maybe I should rewatch it.

That's a fair point. It did feel really rushed. I didn't read the manga but how much did they cut out, do you know?

Now you need to stop right there mister, because tons of anime may do it but it doesn't make it any less bullshit. SAO hastily tries to jump on every bandwagon it can find, and it makes it pretty awful to watch. I mean, there's a fucking tentacle rape scene in the first season. Just why.
It has really good animation though. Kind of makes it more painful because I wish the animation wasn't wasted on a show that does everything else wrong after about episode 4 of season 1.

Now you need to stop right there mister, because tons of anime may do it but it doesn't make it any less bullshit.
Not saying it isn't bullshit, saying why go "Fuck SAO" when the things it does are a part of Anime in general. Instead of shunning one example and pretending like it's this one example fucking up, why don't you say "fuck anime" and fight that battle instead. Cause there's TONS OF SHIT wrong with Anime that no one wants to really deal with. I don't mind, cause cartoons, but if you are going to get so upset at one cartoon cause of these reasons, I can't imagine why you'd point to any one cartoon specifically when the majority of them do it.

I mean, there's a fucking tentacle rape scene in the first season. Just why.

Not trying to defend that scene but it doesn't count as rape when he didn't even get that far before Asuna bit him. (Although that was his intention) See this is what I hate about the hatedom for SAO: they exaggerate just how bad those scenes were.

As for why, well the same reason any anime pointlessly crowbars this unnecessary and unpleasant shit in: because some sick perverts out there are willing to blow their money on this crap and companies feel the only way to succeed now is pander to the lowest common denominator. The same problem is happening in Hollywood and the game industry as well.

Those sick perverts have money and are willing to pay for stuff like that. The rest of the audience just buys Frozen and anime featuring cute/moe characters.

I don't, at least not unless said series is really good outside of the moe-ness. (ex: Nichijou)

I'm speaking about the Japanese audience lol

Really? Because it's getting to where I can't tell the difference.

That's pretty terrifying, to be honest, but I see what you mean.

This is a pretty good look at the issues surrounding anime creation.

For me, my criticism of Sword Art Online is that.....

I saw a review for this anime, which pretty much mirrors what you said. I was planning on watching it cause one of my friends said it was good, but I don't trust his taste. Looks like I'm skipping this one.

Wow. Well that explains what MAPPA is and why Madhouse has been animating mainstream shows like NGNL and Hanayamata.
This video is pretty accurate (and current!) on how the anime industry works. It's pretty tragic.
I just wish I had the money to buy the BDs to directly support my favorite shows.
Also, I hope A-1 Pictures dies in a fire.

it makes me so angry when people act so self-righteous when they laugh at people who get after them for watching animes illegally. I mean, it's not a punishable offense, but at the same time it DOES fall into illegal streaming. and it's certainly not supporting your series at all.

like, fucking support what you like.

also, it's kind of bullshit when you get introduced to an anime you really like and then you come to the realization it's been dead for a couple of years. lookin' at you Okamisan and Jellyfish Princess....

"Tentacle Molestation." There you go. I'm pretty sick of people arguing semantics every time I mention that scene, or any other similar scene in other series though. It's a strip tease; they stop it because that's the furthest they could go without bumping their rating up too high, so they just let you imagine the rest. It wouldn't really be any better or worse if they actually showed any penetration because the complete loss of power and fetishization and random needless pandering was already done. If they had gone further the rest of the scene would have just been disgusting, all the lasting damage is still there. That's why I hate random meaningless elicit scenes like this- not because rape is gross, but because it can ruin characters and make them completely unlikable when you do it incorrectly. Looking at you, Lumpy Space Princess.

But, I digress. I don't really care that people really like SAO because frankly if you're entertained by something you shouldn't stop because someone put it under a criminal lens and it looks an awful lot like a giant pile of manure. Just please don't be the guy in my government class that thinks the asuna kirito romance is a realistic depiction of a healthy relationship.
