Seriously though, I was thinking about this and I thought it would be legit for LabZero to make a new one for a couple reasons.
1) Mike Z wants to show off the potential of his engine to do stuff besides fighting games. He's shown a demo of a beat'em game, Battletoads would be additional advertising for it
2) They have the animation talent for it. I think one of the original reasons people got battletoads (before the age of the internet) was the whole "WOW HIS ARM GOT HUGE AND HE PUNCHED THAT PIG OFFSCREEN!! RADICAL!!!" Now imagine the moves we'd see with LabZero's animation quality.
3) Press. Everyone knows about the whole "Battletoads Preorder" meme. Now imagine how people react when it's actually a thing. Even if 90% go "Oh that's cool" you still getting more people interested.
4) Come on. It's Battletoads.

Just something I was thinking about. Feel free to tell me why this will never happen.
But I'll always semi-believe.

Ok...

I'm a sucker for hyper violence...

And seeing a goddamn Toadman Drill a Rat with gallons of Blood in HD is one of my dreams

I'm pretty sure Battletoads is owned by Rare - so they would have to go through Microsoft AND Rare to get it made.
They could go around the license by calling it "Combatfrogs" or something.

But if they do hypothetically start making it: who would do the music? Michiru Yamane, David Wise, Jake Kaufman or all of the above? Or Elvis Presly.

SkirmishAmphibians.

That would be awesome.

I never played Battletoads, but it is pretty cool! I still want to see Alex do a movie, though. But yeah! It's semi-impossible, but I'd love to see it!
(I'd love to see anything from L0, really.)

I have wanted this so badly ever since Mike showed off that proof of concept.

I've never been super into Beat'em ups, but I'd play it. Even if it was a rip off, like Fight Frogs or something.

Hmmm.... rip-offs, huh? now I need to see a good Final Fight reboot! Skullgirls is essentially MVC2 perfected, so why not Final Fight, too? They could even use the Canopy Kingdom as a base! Or that big war where everyone died (Just like Marvel Comics!)

I just think Battletoads would benefit most out of the possible beat'em ups in terms of outrageous animations.

Yeah, as much as I love LabZero, there's just no way I'd buy an XBone to play their new game. If KI couldn't do it, I'm not sure Battletoads would either.

I could definitely get behind "Fight Frogs" though, or maybe it's time for a new fighting animal altogether. BATTALPACAS!

Wasn't Battletoads made by Rare which means its now owned by Microsoft?

I'd absolutely support L0 on this. I've loved beat 'em ups for years, I've played countless hours of Battle Toads and I long for a new installment.

Forgetting the logistical problems or rights, etc. I think Lab Zero could do an awesome job. Alex Ahad's art style would look great with the series. It would be revived without trying too hard to look hardcore and devoid of character, with Ahad's art, it would have an awesome, yet stylized look. Imagine their weapon transformations, Boss designs (hello Black Queen and Robo Manus) stage design.

Look at the teams commitment to detail and lore, this could be more than just a remake, but a new start to the franchise; building up their history, future, world, enemies, and personalities.

Man, I know it's not likely, but it's something that I'd be in favour of seeing.

I resolved to buy an Xbox One the moment I found out that Qute (the best shmup dev currently in existence) is making a shooter for Xbone.

Anyway, Battletoads on the Nes is an interesting game even if it's incredibly broken in a lot of ways. It's not an impossible game, but I wouldn't call it well designed either. It did have a SHIT TON of variety though, which set it apart from most other beat em ups of the time (which IMO don't stand the test of time compared to later arcade beat em ups like Alien Vs Predator, Knights of the Round, DND, etc.), and in that regard the gameplay is uniquely charming at times. A more carefully designed Battletoads could actually be quite an excellent game.

I don't really care about the more repetitive Snes Battletoads, or the solid but less interesting arcade titles, though.

Lab Zero would work well with Battletoads for sure. The cartoony western art style would be great for Battletoads, and the animation style definitely lends itself well to all the cartoony transformations in Battletoads. Only thing is, beat em ups are a very different genre from fighters when you get down to it. I would want someone well familiar with the genre and some good experience with it on hand before anything of the sort was designed.

Yeah
You would have to have played a lot of beat-em-ups. Good thing I've played a ton of them. No really, I've played X-men, The Simpsons, Ninja Baseball Batman, Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow of Mysteria, Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom, and THE ACTUAL ARCADE VERSION OF BATTLETOADS.

Ninja Baseball Batman was surprisingly good. Have you checked out streets of rage remake?

I am big fan of beat-em-ups and would like to see the potential in Lab Zero making Battletoads. On the subject of beat-em-ups, it's one of my top genres of games to play.

I think there was a short window of release until Sega pounced on them. I recall on my HDD back ups there's a version of it. Not sure if it was the demo or the final release though.

"Battalpacas" is brilliant. I had to say it.

*Walks out of room, returns with a cup filled with milk and Alphabits cereal*....huh....*spits in surprise, spelling out "What the Fu--"*
I...I ran out of letters....

In all seriousness....I....I don't know how to feel about this. I'm curious and guarded at the least.

Well, that's a bummer. At least we still have Skullgirls, Streets of Rage, and our other favorite beat-em-ups or fighting games to play.

I can't wait to see what company Microsoft contracts to ruin a beloved video game franchise of my childhood!

If only it was Platinum...

I wouldn't count out the contractee before the game's even announced. Remember Killer Instinct?

Remember how it's not a Killer Instinct game, but instead an SF4 game with autodoubles?
Remember how I helped with KI?
I am most assuredly not working on this, if it's a thing. And I'm VERY sad I'm not.
Heh.
