I just got through a series of games w/ someone who wasn't that good—but he spammed the hell out of Big Band's punch assist:
  • I hit confirm the shit out of his Bella or Para? Here come's BB's fist from across the screen to knock me away anyway.
  • I'm about to hit? Oh, BB's gigantic body is standing there, actually blocking me from hitting anything, even though his fist missed, Bella's in recovery, and I'm standing behind him.
  • I blocked an attack leaving my opponent in a vulnerable position? Nope, BB is there—invincible—to take up the whole screen with his punch while Para recovers.
  • I try to do anything? Nope. BB's there to invulnerably spam his fist every couple of seconds.
How does someone try to deal with that and stand a chance?

also how is that assist even fucking fair

its only invincible if you let BB recover, you can easily hit him after you recover from blockstun, when you hit him it locks BB out and gets a longer cool down period

As long as you hit the assist with one attack (I don't know if you need to break armor), you should make it so they're offline for longer. Or, pick a better character?

If you hit their assist, it will be locked out for a bit. So, if you block the big band assist and can safely do a jab then they can't call him for a bit.
If they are in your face and call him, you can throw them and the assist will whiff through you.
If they call the assist, but you hit their point character before the assist starts the animation, then the assist will stop dead in its tracks.
If you sweep the assist, it will break the armor and stop the rush punch from happening.
You can jump over the assist to make it whiff completely.
You can also just block their pressure and use a reversal super when given the chance.

Just a few things you can do, it's by no means overpowered, it's just strong

If you are in their face and you know they're mashing assist you can also throw them, which will make the assist whiff through you and gets you a full combo.

Yo, I ninja'd mike z

Thanks for the tips, guys.

I think I'm reaching that point in this fighting game where I've played long enough that (I think) I should be better than I am, so I start picking up on particular mechanics that piss me off instead (they may entirely be fair, but my brain'll sure as hell come up with reasons why they aren't). 60 hours into Valentine (is that... even a remarkable amount?) and I still don't really know what I'm doing.

Usually at this point, I end up dropping the game :( I don't want that to happen.

what do

you might want to pick up another character as an assist, might I recommend Fukua, She is incredibly basic and straightforward

Don't drop it?
If you dropped every game when you reached about this point, then you haven't spent long enough on fighting games to have the general skillset down yet.
There is ALWAYS a plateau. For some people it's longer than others. Once you get past it you'll know, but you have to be around to get past it.
Winning is not the goal, learning is the goal. Pick a thing, like properly dispensing with opponents' poor assist calls, and spend time doing that without worrying about losing.

Not really, no. Consider that other people can (and do) play that much in a few weeks...or even in one week if they are really into a given game. And that there are people with thousands of hours of general fighting game experience, Versus series practice, or even specifically SG play.
If you feel like you have to start a thread like this looking for basic advice you are not yet proficient.

I meant "what do" moreso in terms of "What should I strive to learn next, what questions should I be asking myself, or what types of things should I be looking for?" (The phrase "what do" probably does not convey this sentiment accurately).

This is good advice, though. I will pick one thing, and work on that. Not to make this my 2nd "training journal" thing, but I'm going to work on getting out of/countering heavy pressure (all someone has to do is spam their moves and it trips me up).

Just do scaples if they start being annoying with bb, he'll end up eating a lot of damage and lose armor in the process and as mike says get locked out

If bb is going to really annoy you simply snap him immediately

One thing you can try and do is watch other players streams and recorded matches to see how they deal with stuff. You're bound to eventually see SOMETHING that can help

Speaking generally, Icky was right on the money. As far as Val specific options regarding brass, it's rare that you see it chosen over Beat Extend unless it's cover for something really good.

air Bypass will go through it if timed correctly, and if you scalpel from here, it'll generally auto-correct and hit BB hard enough to discourage calling him again. Might even get lucky and hit their point too if they were setting up a zoning pattern, charging a stance, or other common Brass tactics.

whenever i see someone using BB rush punch assist i just try and spend a bit more time in the air than i usually would.

people who have invincible assists are usually REALLY fucking keen to call them too so just hover around that general range until they call it.

plus playing as val you should have no problem avoiding that thing.

If you really want to test them, just start comboing Big Band. This a bit riskier against characters with good ranged supers (Parasoul, Squigly, Peacock, Fukua), but you can often bait people into making mistakes while trying to save the assist (e.g. Air Scalpels when they try to jump up and challenge you). If they're calling the assist really often, you can kill Big Band without him ever being on point (super satisfying). Just be careful, and don't get too greedy.

A simple uncombo jump loop that might work midscreen is [whatever] c.HP, j.HP > j.HK xx Air Dash, j.HP, c.LP > c.HP.
