So most of us know what kind of characters we like to play and gravitate towards. In this thread I would like to hear about your main type of character and why you like said type.

So I will start:
No surprises here my favorite are shotos! I like the ability to pressure at mid screen, full screen, and up close with fireballs. I like having a dragon punch to attack people who try to jump at me. I like the ability to not have a specialized character that focuses on one skill I like to have a tool for everything. So my list of top shotos that I like to play includes:
* Ken
* Ryu and Evil Ryu
* Gouki
* Fukua
* Iori
* Mai
* Lilith
* Athena

Pat,Aigis,Chie,Millia, Filia,Fortune, Helena, rui(chaos code),xiaoyu, Leo, Fukua, Squigly, Lambda, Taokaka, noel

Basically i want a character that once is in your face i can frame trap you to holy hell. i've just recently gone to zoners as well since i like to control space. primarily when i think of a fighting game i generally just want to be up in your face and FUCK YOU UP from there. not nitpick at you from a distance like some dunce.

mmmmh hmmm hmmm... Oh you Josh, you need some flavor to that Shoto Team.

*Dan Hibiki (Every Game he appeared in) , reason why: IT'S DAN FREAKING "THE MAN" HIBIKI!

*Q (SF3S): Tough to play in the fun way, is a great character to teach you how to play 3S and how to parry.

*Crome Dome (TMNT TOURNY FIGHTERS): Take Dhalsim with his long stretchy normals and also give him Zangief's Pile Drives to boot. WTF

So overall i'm more of a balanced player, I can go for the Shoto but it has to be Dan ( no exceptions ), I took alot from the charge rush down of Q, and i mixed in some Grapple thanks to Crome Dome.

It sums up my SG team quite nicely actually... Band has the feel of Q, and Bella has a mix of charged rush down ( I abuse tumble run ) with grapples.

Bunch of good stuff
Thank you for the elaboration :)
Talking mad trash about my shoto selections
I love me some ken did 0.0
Also did you play boxer at all for street fighter he's basically Q

boxer is boxer, in his boxers. Q is always like "Bitch Please."
Q_Parry.gif
so he's better

For me, it differs far too often for me to give a solid answer. My mains are ridiculously varied in playstyle.

I usually end up maining rush-down characters primarily for the gameplay feel that comes with good movement and movement options, such as with my mains Valentine, Dante, and SFIII Makoto, but I feel that zoners (I main Gen and Naoto) and grapplers (I main Tager and Zangief) fit my fighting game mindset better.

I tend to be a more defense-based player (for better or worse...), and I love the feel of fighting against my own impatience in order to wait for a perfect moment to strike (which is probably why I love playing against skilled Peacock players).

I have a soft spot for stupid looking characters. Whatever kind they are, they work for me.
Faust is my bae

I like characters with extremely good okizeme, good mix up and is able to play a poking game. So basically my style play footsies until i knock you down and then make your life a living hell.

Hilda from under night in birth (extremely good zoning character with the best okizeme in the game)
I-no from guilty gear (very good space control and forces you to play her game)
C. viper from street fighter (feints up the ying yang and a really nasty oki game)
The william sisters from tekken (Anna has really good mixup, Nina has really good oki and they can poke you to death)
Eliza fits my description perfectly especially with how good breaker is and so does parasoul
Rachel from doa(she da force tech queen)

Rush-down characters for me. I like characters that have fast speed and/or some air-game so I can overwhelm opponents or keep them on their toes (Characters I like: Filia, Millia, Chie, Makoto Nanaya, Valkenhayn, etc.)

All Stars: Kat. Combo's. Can kill off of any move she hits with if has 1, 2, or 3 super meter. Very fast and mobile.

This game: Para for combo and everything else.

Filia because combos and team combo/tag-in synergy.

Double because combos, resets, and everything else.

That's not really a character type lol. But you like high combo characters?

that is a character type.

Grapplers can't rushdown. and they can't zone. they grab. and grabs from them are usually associated with reading the opponent for a high risk but gain high reward. now back to a typical shoto that's got a little but of everything isn't godlike at anything tho.

Hold up I wasn't talking about the grappler comment lol look at the one after

characters that can link normals super easy like Jam or Guy.

oh luxadeswag..... yeah i didn't see that cause i put him on the ignore list ergo i cannot see his posts(whether they're actually helpful or just absolute shit i do not care)

Bad characters

I tend to gravitate between slow, defensive characters (PW, Q, Tager, Snake, Big Band, Nemesis) and fast-ish, mix-up heavy characters (SHO, Roy, Dante, Akihiko, El Fuerte, Squigly).
But I suck so it doesn't matter anyway.

Zoners!
*sets up a barricade to avoid the flying barrage of tomatoes*

Yeah, I've been using Peacock since the beginning of this game, I've used Isaac and Emmet in PSASBR, Olimar in Brawl, Villager in Sm4sh, and Dr. Doom in UMvC3.
Not to say I can't use non-zoning characters if I like the character enough, but I've always loved being able to set up walls of projectiles.

Didn't we have a thread for this already?

EDIT: It's more or less this: http://skullgirls.com/forums/index.php?threads/your-fighting-game-main-character-history.3628/
Way I see it, the "fighting game history" thread is about data, whereas this one is about drawing conclusions from said data.

That being said, I didn't post in the previous one since I don't have much of a FG history worth sharing, but based upon recent observations:

I don't particularly enjoy learning and/or using combos/resets. Instead, I instinctively prefer to pick up characters that can do well with good neutral over those. That being said, I tend to mostly gravitate towards keepaway zoners (Peacock) or armored heavy-hitters / grapplers (Big Band / Cerebella, Beowulf).

setup-based characters with a lot of options

-Eddie/Zato (GG)
-Venom (GG)
-Parasoul, Peacock (SG)
-Sentinel, Strider (Mvc2)
-Dante, Morrigan (Mvc3)
-Carl, Arakune (Blazblue)

Charge characters and grapplers...because I found success turtling with Honda in ST.
In Xrd I main Bedman, because he works so well with the Hitbox. All of his moves are quarter circles and his triangle dash is really easy on the Hitbox. As far as the character goes, I really like his knockdown oki game with the deja vu specials. Plus I like the fact that he can zone fairly well with his boomerang projectiles. I'm not really sure how to categorize Bedman tho.

I haven't played as many fighting games as you nerds but I'll do my best.
Fast Grapplers. For some reason Grapplers are commonly depicted as slow moving behemoths that have to wait for their opponents to come to them because they can't move anywhere fast enough.
As a real life Grappler I'm personally insulted by this, we're deceptively faster than you would expect. If they have a zoning tool then they're perfect.

I also like the classic Rushdown, as long as they're very fast and direct. I always prefer a character that can deal a lot of damage in a few hits than a character that relies on dozens of little love taps to win. High risk speed and power. Characters with Command Dashes are my personal favorites.
The one thing that all of my favorite characters share is a very fiery personality, both literally and metaphorically. Naturally athletes like Pro Wrestlers and Boxers are at the top of the list. I also love characters that actually use fire. Fire's my thing man, my name's meaning even has roots in it.

It might be stupid but I choose my mains based on character rather than gameplay. So across the few games that I've played the character's fighting styles vary greatly, but they're all people that I'd love to hang out with. Altogether they can create a fiery superstorm of hot-blooded fighting spirit.

Name: Bedman

Life Goals: Bed
Over All Status: Bed
Exactly...I just have trouble putting it into worde.

for me? I usually like to pick characters that fit certain criteria's that I'm looking for. this often means I pick characters people normally don't always pick or talk about. for example, my main in VF4 onwards is Lei Fei, but nobody ever really talks about him compared to characters like Wolf, Akira, or Jacky. in guilty gear, I was just trying out everyone and when I saw Jam, I never even heard about her. I tried her and I loved how she played, so she stuck. I picked E.Honda because you rarely see Sumos in fighters and Honda is a fun turtling character to play. I played Amane because he was the one BB character that stood out and those cloth drills. I'm really weird with picking the characters I like.

I am usually mixed in how I like to fight, though there are instances where I'll never pick characters from things like "I don't like that characters fan-base" to "I really hate this slow character in this fast game"

also, grapplers all need to have some form of 180-360 motions. none of those quarter circle for all moves nonsense. those aren't grapplers, they're godless heathens. Kanji

godless heathen I say!
Arc failed me with him!
it's blasphemy!
HERESY!

a'ight chill shakespeare

good buttons, good projectiles, why? because they are good

so like Margaret, Lambda/Nu, Fukua, Bernkastel

I like ground based rush down characters, with an emphasis on mix ups and overwhelming the neutral game.

I like ground movement as opposed to air because you have more control and input over-all. I like rush down because it's more risk/reward and matches with it tend to be very hot blooded and exciting.

Examples:

Wolverine (pre mvc3), Bishamon, Rikuo/Aulbath

I like characters that have a little randomness to them, or have a slightly unorthodox playstyle. It keeps playing them fun because their playstyles are a lot more varied than say Shoto characters or characters with pretty static combo strings. I like variety.

Faust, Zappa, A.B.A, and Baiken in GG.
Yoshimitsu and Voldo in Soul Calibur 2.
Eddie in Tekken.

I like characters with widely varying moves and normals.
I don't care how awkward someone is to use, the more different and versatile their moves, the better.

*Usually* what ends up happening is I pick punish-based characters who dominate middle range. They generally turn out to be slower characters, but they don't have to be. As long as I can get small setups or advantages in some way. My favorite thing is guessing games, whether attacking or defending.

However, if those characters don't have a usable jab, or other close-range tools, it causes me a LOT of grief. I can go for years without finding a character versatile enough for me in a game. I will bounce between characters who are balanced, rushdown, or vortex characters, and even zoners.

I basically end up in a bizarre niche where I'm always either playing the most technical character, or the simplest character. This is why you see me changing teams constantly, trying to find the gameplay tools I want.

CvS2 : K-Rock/Haohmaru2/Hibiki
Darkstalkers : Lilith, Jedah
Guilty Gear : Robo-Ky, Zappa
KoF : Vice/K'/Kula
SamSho : Rimururu
Smash Bros : Bowser, Sheik
Soul Calibur : Lizardman, Nightmare
Street Fighter 3 : Twelve, Ibuki
Street Fighter 4 : Seth, Makoto
MvC2 : Strider/Ironman/Doom
MvC3 : Dormammu/Nemesis/Super Skrull

I main random. has some truth to it.
Skullgirls team will likely keep changing until Robo-Fortune is out.
Currently running Fortune/Eliza/Double. Fukua/Painwheel for current duo.

This was hard. I can play almost any character on any fighting game.
But I like speciall characters like let say, Shang Tsung from MK where you can turn into ANY character from the game.
I also forgott this one, Mok from Tekken!
