Valentine
Been playing the game for 4 hours, and I love it so far (Never enjoyed a fighting game before this), although I'm not sure if it's a valid option to go Solo Val. Is it?

It's hard but definitely possible.

Just looked up a set from Outlaw. Must be really hard to not get backed up into a corner by playing defensively, and not get totally demolished when you're on the offensive.

Anyway, thank you! All I needed to know :D

At your level, anything is viable, so don't worry about that at all.
Who knows, maybe after the next 100 hours you grow to like another character, and want to play a team after all?

But yeah, even if you don't, Solo is most certainly "good enough" - Balance is very solid in SG, almost anything goes.

IsaVulpes is spot on. Skullgirls is balanced enough that you can do well as solo-Val.

As a kinda-sorta-semi-decent solo-Val, I can confirm that solo-Val has quite a few glaring weaknesses, just as any solo character. Valentine has a great offense game, made better by her increased solo damage output, but she has no good meterless defensive options.

Once you get a good feel for the character, you will essentially be seeking to cover those weaknesses by using her strengths. It won't be as easy once you get towards intermediate and advanced Skullgirls play, but it will not be impossible.

Yeah, you can solo. You will likely not be winning EVO as solo, but I bet if you get good enough you can win your locals.

You will feel like you're running uphill a lot of the time especially as a Val player who is definitely lower on the "viable as solo" scale.

But as a new player, you're going to suck period... so learn one character at a time is not a bad thing.

Edit: I think the "balanced enough" is... a little untrue. All fighting games are balanced enough if the only standard is that average players can beat average players. Are you going to find a solo in top 8 at Evo? Probably not (though I'm always rooting for Zid!).

@Spencer Yeah, you're right. "Balanced enough" wasn't the right phrase for me to use.

Solo-Val is simply not viable for high level play compared to most two or three character teams with Valentine on point. I still use solo-Val because I find it fun, but in general, learning another character to add behind Valentine is recommended.

Yeah I run solo-wheel. And for what I want out of it, solo is perfectly viable. And for OP, solo is more than viable.

Lacks defensive options and the huge solo damage. At least on retail. Has good reset oportunities, but needs weight specific combos.
She is fun to play as solo once you learn her, tho.

Solo is a good and viable start, + viable for a long time after the start.

Still, best not get too used to the 1v2 and 1v3 damage'n'health ratios. Otherwise, if you will want to pick up another character, switching to a 2/3-char team and losing the damage'n'health boost might be a greater obstacle than necessary.

Cheesing people with solo damage is half the reason why I play Solo Band

Go for it

Solo in general is viable, and if the current beta-test sticks, even more viable than before.

Solo Val in particular is viable if you're able to use her tools well enough to stay out of trouble.

Solo sucks, they aren't viable, blah, blah, blah. NEC still had 2 of them in top 8.

At this point when you're just picking up the game, don't worry too much about it. Just learn whichever character(s) you want and go from there. The game is balanced enough that if you really want something to work, you can usually make it work.

Big band has different considerations. A mashed SSJ can be a game ender 1v3.

Not to forget that the two Team Players who took out the Solos switched to Solo themselves in their respective matches..

You can make Top8 Evo as a solo, it already happened (and in a version that was far far worse for Solos)

Not that this question matters at all or should get discussed here..
It's like someone asking "Hi, I have 2hours in the game, do I have to learn a 30seconds long combo to win??", and then I say "No, you can go plenty far with extremely basic combos", and then someone comes and goes "PLENTY FAR?? :OOO BUT CAN U WIN EVO???"
.. Who the hell cares? This is the Beginner Section.

You don't tell a beginner that they have to learn PBGC and AG and BurstACs at some point in the future, as it does nothing but confuse them and make them unsure of their current choices, and when is that 'future', and oh god I tried PBGC and it was hard I will never be good at this game..
Similarly, you don't tell a Beginner that they have to pick up a team in the future.
The PBGC/etc thing would actually be a better thing to say, since at least it is not incorrect..
