Here we discuss the 2-on-2 2D-fighting game, Vanguard Princess. It features an all-female cast of characters and even has teams with assists. An MTV article put Vanguard Princess on the same level as Skullgirls so I figured it was worth making a thread about. http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2013...uard-princess-could-be-this-years-skullgirls/

~

To start this discussion off, I'll come out and say that I don't actually own the game yet, but I noticed it was on sale around the time of this post so I was wondering if anyone else played it. It's currently on Steam at 50% off for $2.49 if you want to check it out for yourself.

The steam reviews are 'overwhelmingly positive' with a majority of reviewers saying they bought the game for its in-depth fighting game mechanics, quality production values, and engaging plot devices.

What do you guys think of this game? Is it worth the sale price? How are the mechanics, and how is the community/online multiplayer?

The combat system looks interesting, but the main reason the game got my attention was that I've heard people putting it on par with Skullgirls.

I happen to own the game. It's fun, but its nowhere near as good as Skullgirls. Plus it has no online.

I've had it for a while. Its not even remotely close.

No online
No training mode
Developer is mia
Game only supports microscopic windowed or full screen
Game is actually free on the developer's site

The game is pretty bad

Lol this game. I was almost tempted to make a discussion about it awhile back. Not sure where you heard it's on par with Skullgirls because I've heard the complete opposite, and I agree with them. The game is also made using the Fighter Maker 2nd engine that is over 10 years old. They had an indiegogo to add netplay in awhile back. Here's the link. It failed. They were asking for $10,000 to fund this netplay and they weren't even making it. Other volunteer developers would make the code and be entered into a contest to see who's code gets used for netplay capabilities. A few problems are 1. There's not a big fan following for this game AT ALL and 2. Why would they need all that money for netplay? 3. They could use an already existing mod that enables multiplayer or use an alternative like GGPO. Game is fun to screw around in a nd play with some friends every once in awhile, but I never ever see this game becoming big at all or EVER be on par with how Skullgirls is now.

To be fair, so is Terrordrome, and that game is awesome.

True, but that game is free. Just because it's using a 10+ year old engine doesn't mean it's going to be bad. I just don't think they should really charge you for it. Plus learning that Vanguard Princess was free on the developers website makes it even worst.

IIRC, the non steam version had an online client called MTSP. This allowed netplay and the netcode was really good.

This is a good game, its just a shame its crippled by its engine and developer being mia. Other than that, it's probably the best and most unique doujin fighter playstyle wise.

I recommend it if you have some IRL fighting game friends to play it with who aren't the type to be bothered by aesthetics, but otherwise you just have no options because Lunarport is really not viable for online play IMO.

First I've heard about this. Was this the playism version? I'm only fammiliar with the original freeware release and the Steam version. Both have nothing but single player arcade and a bare bones versus mode, with no netplay, training, or options to speak of.

Also OP of course its nowhere near Skullgirls in terms of gameplay or production. That doesn't mean its not a good game, however. Just one that's extremely rough around the edges.

With the exception of maybe @BANG! I will fuck up everyone here with Kaede + Hilda Assist

I'm sorry but this game makes me want to throw up.

Reviewers saying this is on par with Skullgirls makes me think none of them have actually played Skullgirls.
Not suprised,really.

I guess for under $3 it's an okay distraction, but shenanigans for saying it's on par with SG. If you're looking for something to play try googling Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code 1.07... you're welcome.

P.S. There is, in fact, a training mode for Vanguard Princess, but have fun setting it up.

I'm pretty sure you can still grab it from sugeno's site for free... additionally, I'm pretty sure the steam version just censors some stuff. Confirm / Disprove?

Steam version censors but it also comes with the option to play an uncut version of the game.

Yeah. Its a patch listed as a free DLC. It makes one of the characters not wear underwear. You know, cuz that's exactly what the FGC needs to help with its public perception.

I don't think that game is as complex as SG, but it's still impressive how well made the game is, taking in mind the engine. I do have the game and it's a shame that isn't netplay. But... what does "mia" is?

missing in action

Thanks for the information. :D
Anyhoo, I must admit that it was lust the thing that got me interested in the game. lol

You could obtain the same pleasure from an average doujinshi and don't even need to consume energies into playing vidyagames

I audibly gagged when I watched the trailer during the Winter Sale.
Why the hell was this in my recommended list.

It's not a bad game. I remember buying it to support the developers and even bought the first dlc......but then net play was never added and the second DLC includes the first dlc and new stuff, but there's no discount for owners of the first dlc or a way to get the new stuff without double dipping. They essentially made a "complete" dlc pack and skipped selling the parts separately.

Anyway, my biggest gripe is the lack of online.

Most Steam reviews are pretty bad, especially for a game like this.

Like I said though, I wouldn't fault the game on appearances. Its a solid fighter with a unique mechanic. It would be worth playing if it was actually playable (ie had online, training mode, etc. and wasn't made in a really bad engine that limits all that).

I'm happy to have as many doujin games as possible there, since there's some good stuff in there. I can ignore the garbage and focus on the titles with quality gameplay.

Still waiting on Ninetails though.

It wasn't that bad. I enjoyed Long Live the Queen for like two hours. I died from eating chocolate.
