Report 3/20 Salty - Beowulf Speaks, Stage Updates, and... Mortal Kombat?

For what it's worth, there are plenty of people who still like buying shiny new sticks regardless of backwards compatibility.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Capcom, but it would be cool if Arcsys did that!

Lol...this thread is a bunch of wtfuckery...I like Final Atrium's changes and I really like Beowulf's voice. It brings the sexeh.

OK we shall all forget this sorta off-topic conversation and talk about what's on the OP.

Damn. Was just about to respond with something that a lot of people missed on why sequels are very very good and very very important.

I like Atrium's new look, though to be honest I still feel the stage is just a little bit too busy and cluttered thanks to all the stuff going on in it, and no palette change is going to completely fix that (though it does make it marginally better). It's still a damn cool stage, but just a little bit more space and restraint would have made it more elegant IMO.

And then there's people like me trolling ebay to find working copies of an older stick or ordering parts to repair existing sticks because it's the one i like dammit

I'm with you, dude. Screw buying new ones.

I think simplifying the stage colour scheme balances the fact there's a ton of stuff in it. We can't get rid of that, after all the work it took. The grey tones give this legendary tone, and it fits b&w Peacock. How cute!
I love Woof's lines and voice, can't wait to play him. Now alla we're missing is the story, right?

After playing on the new Final Atrium, it is a lot cleaner and less cluttered to look at. But I'll always miss the old version. it's something about that clashing glow that really highlights that stage as the Final Stage.

I also had a cute little idea. Would it be difficult to make Squigly's c.LP a secret win pose, similar to Beowulf's? I would personally love to see that.

The difference between squaggle's c.lp and beo's chair thing is that you can't hold c.lp indefinitely. I don't know how hard / easy it would be to program this in only at the end and not during regular play. At the same time if Squigs gets a win pose like this then it paves the way for "I want my character to have one too".

Squig's c.LP is for taunting.
Its also for lighting Peacock's cigars.

I like the new final atrium though I will probably miss the glowing yellow somewhere in my heart. The new shadows do look a lot better though. Like much better.

Now I actually have a reason for playing the Final Atrium that doesn't involve just standing there and listening to the music.

New final Atrum seems more dramatic than before, very suited to the final Boss Fight with Marie. And the new Train stage looks awesome great work

finally final atrium isnt ugly. now I can enjoy playing it.

Resurrection!

@Mike_Z So MKX is starting to appear in the wild now and I've been seeing reactions to the PS3 stick compatibility pop up. From what I gather, to use a PS3 controller/stick you need to first sign into the console with a PS4 pad or stick, then reassign a PS3 stick to it. This means you still need a PS4 Dualshock or whatever for every PS3 stick you use with the console.

Was playing the game there, its pretty fun. If you want to use a ps3 controller you have to have a ps4 controller signed in and it assigns it to that. Wasn't able to play 2 player with my mate cause of this. Its pretty annoying but at least my ps3 controller will work.

saw watching avoidthepuddle that for the ps3 driver to work for MKX you still need one DS4 for each ps3 stick you want attached so you can sign in

Will that be how PS4 SG handles PS3 controllers too?

Already been addressed here on Skullheart, and on Neogaf. Short version: SG is currently (and will be) plug n play after you've started the game with a single DS4. Requiring two always-on DS4's for MKX is an implementation issue on Nether Realm's part.
That's entirely up to MKX/NRS, it has nothing to do with devkit vs retail. A profile is not required for the driver, it is required by the GAME for savedata and trophies and things. The PS3 driver itself doesn't care about any profiles or anything at all besides which sticks are plugged in. (Though I would assume you don't need to keep the controller actually physically plugged in, just not dead, so the 2 USB ports isn't really an issue unless you're at low battery, and you can probably plug the DS4 into another USB port like your phone charger, for power. That's some sideways spin there, heh.)

SG does NOT work that way, as already shown on repeated Salty streams. SG keeps the profile that started the game always logged in, and that's the only profile it uses no matter which controllers you add or remove. You need a single DS4 to press one button and dismiss the "You plugged in a legacy controller, the Home button won't work" message that you get when plugging in a PS3 stick the first time - and we're trying to fix that, too! - but after that point you can disconnect the DS4 and play the game entirely with PS3 sticks until you turn it off. I even wrote special code where if the DS4 was in charge of the menus, when you unplug it the game finds the first PS3 stick and puts that one in charge, which is not how other console versions work.

[edit] Just checked with my phone charger, you can leave a DS4 connected to your PS4 and charge it that way. If you connect it to something else that recognizes it as a controller (like your PC, with DS4 drivers) then it will disconnect from the PS4.

I don't have a GAF account, but there ya go.

What I LOVE about this is the amount of crap I have ALREADY GOTTEN from people (not you) because of something NRS decided to do. I swear, trying to do anything to advance the standards of usability in fighting games is like pulling teeth.

I guess on one hand it's understandable why they did it this way. MKX has a ton of unlockables, so if you're playing against your friend/sibling local it's cool for both of you to be able to unlock stuff at the same time, instead of getting a bunch of stuff on one account then having to go home and unlock it again on your own profile. (I'm assuming that's the logic behind this anyway)

It still is undeniably aggravating how that introduces this hurdle though - and that blame is falling on y'all.

In all cases...isn't that better than nothing? I mean before they would still need two PS4 controller and nothing else would works. By the way, didn't someone else have also chosen to use your plugin? If that's the case, your name will be cleared!

edit : MKX is already getting a shady reputation with the way it handle DLC, gate things ect...so it's likely that people will soon blame Neverrealm and Warner instead of Lab Zero for the controller incident.

Well, the article mention the fact that it's probably Netherealm choice. And when you look at the comments, they pretty much all go toward blaming Netherrealm(or simply appreciate being able to use the stick even if it's in a convoluted way) and not Lab Zero. Count taken that on that same site haters are quick to criticize skullgirls, i think it's safe to see that Lab Zero dodged the bullet!

You got a point.

I apologize in advance for responding so long after the conversation had passed, but this is my first time signing in since my last post here and IMO it's more respectful for me to respond then to not respond (if I posted something to somebody and they never responded to me i'd feel slightly insulted, anyways) If I shouldn't be doing this then let me know.

That's correct, you won't, and you wouldn't even if the framerate hadn't changed.
I figured as much, I imagine it'd be extra work for you guys to appease a very small minority of people. For the record though, having played it a lot more I like it better then I did originally when the change was first made, though I still prefer the original.

So much complaining, just trust L0's creative decisions for pete's sake. If you don't like it, make your own fighter!!!!

Anyway, i like Beowulf's voice. I can't believe all his responses were added in one update.
My intent wasn't to complain, it was merely to give my opinion. I think there's an important distinction between the two. If it came off as whiny then I apologize for that, I did not intend to complain or whine and certainly not to insult anybody at Lab Zero or other consulting artists. I have aspergers so occasionally when I say or word things they end up having a connotation that I didn't intend.

I personally prefer the old color scheme. It may be due to me being partially color blind, but the colors work for me. Still, I completely understand the change. However, I will say that now the colors look muted and boring to me. The blue hue just kinda washes over everything and gives it a cold feeling, like stone. I think the old colors made the foreground of the scenery pop and stick out more and the details in the background contrast more in a nice way. Now, it all just flows togethor and doesn't quite stand out as much.

Again, I completely understand why it was done, I just wish the palette tey'd replaced it with didn't look quite so dull to me.
I think this post worded it better then mine did.
