Redemption reference because I quit playing SkullGirls a few days after it came out way back when.

----- Enjoy! -----

Hopped onto multiplayer...wow there’s no lag even at 256ms! Wtf…well ok

I immediatelly realized after winning one match because the other guy didn’t know fighting games, and losing one because I didn’t even know which moves were going to come out when I pressed a button. I needed to take some time to actually learn some characters.

I went into training mode and faffed around for a bit until I realized (even though I had done this two years ago when I started) I hadn’t done what I normally do which is go play through arcade mode a few times with the characters I’m interested in. So I started off with Valentine, who I KNOW I’m going to play because when it all comes down to it, I tend to pick my characters based off of a combination of aesthetics and “How they feel” or how they control. Valentine is the only character I’m 100% sure about.

I’m playing on Normal, yeah the definitely did patch the difficulty on this game lol. Also I hate Fillia. I have this leftover mental damage from playing SFIV when it first came out and losing to Ken’s online over and over. So many Shoryukens. So yeah. I’m immediately turned off to any character who has an ‘uppercut’ as a core mechanic. I don’t mind wakeup reversals or invincibility frames….just...uppercuts. Anyway, Fillia reminded me too much of Ken, so at least I can cross off ONE character from this whole “Pick a Team” Struggle.

Oh yeah, the actual Skull Girl fight is still as BS as ever. Ffffffck. Airdash cancelling j.hp into each other and crossing up made it a lot easier. Yay! One char done…

Let’s try out this new Squigly gal...I like her normals a lot actually. The j.hp reminds me of Hakumen’s sword from Blazblue. I don’t really know how I feel about her whole charge mechanic, kind of like Tsubasa from BB, who I never really cared for but hey, whatever. Her Blockbusters are pretty sweet, and it seems like there’s a lot of tricksy setups to be had with that. I like having options. Toolsets are sweet mojo. It’s part of why I liked playing Batman/Batgirl in Injustice so much, they just had...tricksy things. Hrm, the charge mechanic is messing with my execution a bit, hard to cancel into specials just based off playing naturally.

Ugh no airdash on Squigly vs. Skullgirl just made me REALLY sad. Oh wait nvm. j.hk from Squigly is pretty sick too!

Ok, Squigly gets a 7.

Ok, next up Peacock. I do understand the value of a Proj. character, but I have also felt they’re always a bit lame. This probably comes from similar SFIV / Blazblue online experiences. Hadouken happy Ryu’s and spam happy V13s just drove me nuts. I can deal with those kinds of players now that I’m a better player all around, so they don’t bother me any more. But it still kind of feels against my nature to pick out a projectile monster.

Yeah I already don’t like it. I want to chain multi hit normals and do flashy air combos, not cover the screen in Looney Toon antics. Although I love her character design, hammerspace is awesome and so is her teleport, Peacock you crazy gal, you are not for me.

Wow Skullgirl is easy with Peacock.

Maybe I’ll use her to round out my team with a projectile person, just as an option.

Peacock gets a 5.

Onto Ms. Fortune. So here’s the thing with her. I like her normals, her move speed, her specials, but I’ll admit it, I”m afraid of the head mechanic. I just know it would take AGES to learn how to control it. Would the set ups be amazing? Yeah, I’m sure. I’ve watched Severin at EVO. I know what this character is capable of. But...but...idk. She does have really cool air dash combos. ANd I do like her more than Fillia…

Let’s give her a 7 and keep going.

Fillia Time. Gotta get this one out of the way.

Well ok, maybe I should rethink her. Her ‘uppercut’ thing isn’t as core to her as I though and I love instant air dashes / ADC anyway...sigh. Ok. Let’s get over her. I have fun playing the gal. She feels VERY natural to me as well. That’s a plus.

Fillia = 8.

Next up: Parasoul. The girl to choose based on aesthetics alone. Her jump-in game is fun as hell, and her j.hp / j.hk / j.mk I’m a huge fan of. So much fun to watch. She doesn’t feel as natural to me as some of the others, but I think overcoming the intial learning curve would be worth it. I’ve never played ‘charge’ characters. I feel like she’s not really a charge character, she’s just scary up close if you can get in with her.

Parasoul: 8

Time for Double. I used to play Double back in the day so I kind of remember her move set. She had some really fun air combos. Well I just perfected Fillia on Normal...that felt fun. Ok, on normal, either Double is too easy or I’m just getting used to the game and can’t play on Normal difficulty anymore.

Double: 8

Painwheel Next. I feel like painwheel would be interesting because of her defensive options...but I don’t really care for her flying mechanic. Yes, it is fun zipping about while flying through the air, but I don’t really understand what I’m meant to be doing with her half the time. I’d have to watch a lot more videos and do a lot more reading before I really knew what was going on. Yeah i just lost to Fillia...blargh. Time to get cheap and just throw a lot.

Painwheel: 4

Last up: Cerebellum!

I like cerebellum. I normally dont play grapplers but hey, a year+ of Mike Z playing Tager, and now we get Cerebellum, the sexiest grappler alive. I like her, but grappling just isn’t my playstyle.

Cerebellum: 7

Well, that’s it for now. Off to work. More to come later….

Couple things:
The Skullgirl is called Marie
Fillia Filia
Cerebellum(lol) Cerebella

Also, Severin doesn't play Fortune, you're probably thinking of KhaosMuffins.

Thanks for the edits. Spelling is super important. Time to go yell at Google Dictionary.

You're right...I think. Whoever it was playing solo MF at Evo 2013. I know KhaosMuffins was one of the names mentioned, so yeah.

Hopped into hard arcade mode with Valentine / Squigly with Valentine on point with Squigly rocking a Silver Chord assist. I do really enjoy Squigly’s normal chains. She seems like she has a fun poke game compared to other characters because of her j.hp. I reach Marie and decide to play around with Valentine / Parasoul next….

- The Next Day -

I decided to try out the Val / Filia combo. Despite my earlier feelings about Filia, I am in LOVE with hairball assist. It makes it incredibly easy to drive someone to the corner thanks to all the multi hit forward motion. I’d be tempted to put Filia on the team just for that. The pressure was just ridiculously intense. I messed around with Valentine / MF and it just wasn’t gonna work. No point in having two points characters. Let’s try that Valentine / Parasoul combo from last night…

...Well ok, I ended up playing with a bunch more combinations and I’m starting to feel like honing in on Squigly and adding her to the team in some way. I really enjoy her character design, and I like her in second as an alternative to Filia’s Hairball, Squigly’s qcf.hp is awesome for lockdown and push.

Later I spent about an hour in the training room with Squigly and Valentine. I’m suddenly starting to think about dropping Valentine all together and running something different...I moved over to a Parasoul / Squigly / Filia combination. I still enjoyed the hairball…

In the end I decided to go online with Parasoul / Squigly after a good two hours or so in the combo room. I still got my ass handed to me online. And so the training continues.

I spent at least a good four hours with Skullgirls today. It was all Squigly all the time and I'm really starting to enjoy her. I've always been a fan of characters with strong jump-ins, and Squigs has not let me down. I've messed about with all sorts team combinations, played her solo and had a lot of fun/wins, and am currently running Squigs on point with Filia running Hairball. It's fun. I'm trying not to spend too much time messing with combos or anything like that yet...just trying to discover my own and get a feel for the game.

The only time I played Skullgirls in the past was when it FIRST came out. It was the game that transitioned me out of Blazblue and into the larger fighting game scene at large. Although I'm a pretty average player, I like to think that I have a pretty good handle on the core mechanics / concepts of fighters. When Skullgirls came out I remember people stomping each other online just figuring things out for the very first time. It was MUCH easier to create-a-combo than it is now. Double just isn't the same now lol.

I think I've gotten over all my original character prejudices and feel comfortable running Filia. Her assists are just too freaking good.

I've been doing quick matches all night...it'll be time to sleep soon. I'm going to be playing this for a bit tomorrow offline with the friend of mine that I've been playing Injustice with since early this summer. We'll see if her takes to it or not.

It seems we have something in common ^,^

So far, nothing much to comment on. Your approach to get a feel for the game is a solid decision.
