Controller/Stick General Questions and Discussion

you want a hit box controller, i guess.

Hitboxes start well above that price point, though. The only real option for someone who insists on that budget and buttons would be to make one yourself.

Quick question, is it weird or irregularto just not upgrade to stick or anything?

Because I've been using the same 360 d pad since 2012 for my fighting games and that serves me well (even though I worn out the shoulder buttons, they still work fine though)

And should I upgrade?

Yeah, you've got a point there. Took a look and, in addition to being $150+, wouldn't work for me because I have the most unreasonable complaint ever: After playing on a keyboard for a week, I realized how much better I am when I use my dominant hand for movement. I'd rather not cross my arms to play, so looks like I'm going custom!

I don't know anything about hitboxes but i'd IMAGINE they sell left-handed hitboxes? But if the price point is an issue, custom is probably gonna be the way yeah. IIRC you can just follow a tutorial for making a stick but just connect buttons to where the stick would be? I've heard the connections are interchangeable but I have no experience building a stick so I don't know personally.

Do what feels most comfortable for you. Seriously. People have won EVO with pads, so it certainly isn't the pad that's holding you back.

I normally recommend everyone at least tries out a stick at some point if they want to get into FGs seriously, but it isn't necessary to use one at all.

They do sell left-handed hitboxes, though the price might be more, idk.

I made my thing by just hacking up an old stick and basically doing exactly what you described, no fancy wiring modifications required to get it to work. That said, you need to be conscious of SOCD and how you place your buttons for maximum comfort in longer gaming sessions.

Just leaving my little story here to the whole discussion of sticks vs pads, etc.

Since end of 2014, i got into fighting games, not going into details here, but since at the time the only console i had was a Xbox 360, the only type of controller that was available to me, was the standard wireless 360 controller. So, since i bought mk9 and third strike on xbox live, i was using that.
But i knew most players used sticks, so, a lot of times, i went to a place here in my city, that have a street fighter IV arcade cabinet, and i played there, my control of the directional inputs, were pratically the same (terrible), and the other buttons, it was worse on a stick.
Since then, i got like a wired 360 controller, more because i was in need of a second controller that didn't use battery, and i've been using it since then, now, other thing that i always seen people talking is: The worse pad is the 360. And i see the point, because the inputs are really not that precise. But few weeks ago, i played SSF2 HD on a friends house, on the ps3, and i couldn't do anything on the ps3 dualshock, to the point where i decided to use the analog stick instead of the dpad.
And like, last week, i played on another friends house, 3rd strike, and there we used standard ps2 controllers, and i got something similar to my performance on my 360 pad, so it was good.
Now, i know my execution is not good, mainly with the directional inputs, and i've seen pad players holding their controllers using the right hand like they were using a stick(piano style), but i hold my controller like i use to any other game, and i know i am not able to do certain inputs without the help of macros, and i've been tempted to buy a fightpad (actually, i'm going to buy a fightstick and a fightpad when i get a job eventually just to take the final test) because of that, but i think is safe to say that a normal controller is enough to do whatever a player wants to do, so the final choice is more a thing of preference and what you are used to.

<snip>
FWIW, it takes *everyone* a few weeks of regular play to get used to a stick. It's not something you pick up straight away. The fact that you used it at an arcade once and couldn't do stuff is not unusual at all.

Ok cool thanks, because I use the 360 D pad, and alot people give it shit but I actually do the best with since I can actually do combos and the more difficult motions like half circle back forward (632146) with 360 d pad easily, unlike 360 analogue where I cant even dash forward.

Plus I always hear that if you actually want to git gud at fighting games you buy a fight stick but I dont want to. Plus Im poor.

i imagine that, that is why i plan to buy one eventually. (after a good pc, dmc4 special edition, and some games for my wii u =P)

Has anybody tried using the Focus Attack Foam Silencer pads for Sanwa/Seimitsu buttons?

096_SILENCER_GRP_01__70181.1379782550.1280.1280.jpg

I've had some issues where some of the microswitches within the buttons start to go limp and lose their responsiveness, I can't figure out what the hell is causing it but it seems to be directly related to using these silencers.

I'm personally using those and am having no problems. Can you take a pic of how you're applying them?

I've thought about getting sound dampeners as the button noise drives my wife crazy... but I've never really read all that great of reviews on them...

I was going to buy some of these ages ago, but the shipping to AU was ridiculous (>10x the cost of the actual item), so I didn't bother and ended up creating some ghetto ones out of some craft foam I found lying around, which works well enough. I didn't really need the sound reduced, but after some adjustment I prefer the lower profile on the buttons.

I can't really see what problem it would cause unless they're either fitted incorrectly (either your fault or they're moulded/cut poorly) or else they're too thick and so prevent the button from depressing far enough.

I followed the installation from focus attack, ( place them plastic film side down into the button housing, insert the tabs into the open sides). It's pretty clear how to do it.

It's really strange though, the button plunger and housing are fine and the button depresses normally, however the spring seems to have problems inside the actual micro-switch. So, I can take apart the button and remove the micro-switch and it'll simply have no reaction to it, almost like a sticky liquid leaked inside of it somehow ( although there's no traces of anything like that ). It's baffling me, but I'm most likely just going to remove the silencers and play without them. It sucks too I really like the feel and sound of them, but it's noticeable in game where I'll push the button once, and it'll remain depressed ( which sucks for PW getting unwanted charges mid combo, or fking up fly cancels )

That sounds super strange. A tragedy really; the softer impact is so much better.

I personally recommend the ones from Focus Attack, if only for the softer impact that the silencers provide.

The PS3 GEM Pad by Hori is cheap and reliable. I've been using mine for about a year now and the best part about it is it comes with drivers, so you don't have to worry about downloading and then installing stuff.

I used to use a normal PS3 remote with a USB, and using DS3 Tool was such a pain.

oh yeah, it lights up too, how rad is that?

Thanks for taking the time to recommend this, I'm really enjoying it so far! Very useful for anyone who plays on DS3 and wants to attend an event/tournament that bans wireless controller.

I've never bought a controller specifically for fighting games before, so I've been looking into models to get. I've determined that a six-button fight pad looks optimal for me. Which marketplaces are best to buy one, and which models work the best? I'm on the PC version if it makes a difference.

I haven't used it myself, but the Hori Fighting Commander 4 seems fairly popular right now. Works on PC/PS3/PS4. You can order it from Hori's website or Amazon.

Edit: I decided to get myself a Hori FC4 recently, and I love it. The D-Pad is amazing. Works fine on the PC versions of Yatagarasu, Ultra Street Fighter IV and Skullgirls(though I had to reconfigure the buttons in the first two games for some reason).

PDP makes a similar controller. Avoid it, as it has serious build quality issues.

I've also heard that the Madcatz pads are quite good apart from the fact that they tend to break after ~6-12 months of full-on use. I haven't heard anything bad about the HORI, though, so that would be my suggestion as well.

I feel like saving up money to either buy myself a fightstick or build myself one. Building my own sound pretty fun to do.

It is.

It's fun, but if you haven't ever used a fightstick before I'd suggest buying one first. That way, you will know if a stick is the right option for you and what you want the stick to be like (e.g. you might want to change the button layout slightly from the manufactured stick, or move the stick further away from the buttons, or put start/select in different places, etc.).

Does anyone know the life expectancy of of a Stick? I've had mine for about two years and combos that I could do in my sleep have now become 10 times harder for me to do, to the point I had to spend time in the lab relearning them. I don't know if my stick is eating inputs or not. Sometimes i think "I guess I just dropped my combo" or "I guess lag ate my input" but there are times when I mean to jump back and simply go straight up into the air. Or get hit by standing normal when I'm crouching even though I'm holding down back as hard as I can.

I use a Madcatz Tournament Edition Fightstick Pro and I've had it ever since the PC Beta first came out....so I guess around 2 years now. I also have about 220 hours between retail and Beta of playtime too. I also play other fighting games but Skullgirls is the only one I'm relatively good on a technical level. So if I do bad in another fighting game I have no idea if its just because of user error or not.

A TE should last well over 2 years. With that said, it's not entirely unheard of for the joystick or buttons to stop working or have a loose connection. I'd suggest spending some time messing around in training mode to see if you can isolate what is going wrong.

I'll try that Vadsaoht, if anything I'll just learn a new combo. I won a few online games today, but I swear I'm not always jumping in the direction I want too sometimes..

I've had a TE Round 1 that lasted well into 4 years with pretty regular-heavy use. The first thing to actually break was the USB cable, I'm still using the same joystick and buttons in my current stick, granted I've replaced a few inner parts but the electronics are all 4-5 years old and working okay

Depending on exactly what your problem is, it may be something simple like the stick itself needing lubrication. The only other thing that comes to mind offhand is that one of the microswitches might be dying.

My TE is just dying as we speak, it's lived for pretty much 5 years.

Wouldn't say it had a good life though.

I don't know where else to put this and I've been searching these forums for half an hour:

I just got ps4 2nd encore and I'm trying to use my ps3 fighting edge (hori sako light up stick) and it doesn't work (though it does light up... Wooo) so then I tried to use my joystick and button modded PS3 sfxt fightstick pro. Neither work at all. Is there so,etching I have to do specifically? Or are they just not supported?

As far as I know, all PS3 sticks should be supported. I can't help much beyond that because I don't have a PS4. All I can suggest is making sure you're tried all of the modes on your stick, and then if that still doesn't work ask someone who has a more detailed idea of what should be supported (perhaps Mike?).

I'm in the same boat with Dime_x with not knowing where to really put this:

The only reason I haven't gotten PS4 version, thought I am edging towards buying it, is because I play pad and hate the DS4 for fighting games. Though I like it with MKX, it really doesn't feel good in my hands whenever I've played Guilty Gear and was a bit awkward when I tried to play Skullgirls for the first time. The analog stick placement kills me.

On the otherside, I've been waiting for the Mac port since forever and I can use the pad I want with that. With it so close to completion I'm divided. I really love the 360 (I'm planning on using my wired Afterglow 360 pad once I get it on Steam) controller for SG and other fighting games but if I were to ever go to tournaments or locals I will probably be stuck playing on PS4. I've debated on this a lot myself. You guys have any input?

No answer to your actual question, but this is the right place for questions like that. I'll update the thread title to make it clearer.

Hopefully I didn't word my question that it is hard to understand.

No, I just have no experience with PS controllers.

Are you in-game when you try it? PS3 sticks won't work on the PS4 menus, but should be fine once you launch the game.
