USA [Dec 8, 2017] SALTY! Friday Weeklies @ Game Realms (Burbank, CA)

is there salty tomorrow

Alrighty guys, I found a new venue but I want your opinions first if you guys can come because there are a few changes (positive and negative). Mike told me to leave it up to you guys.

NEW VENUE
http://www.twingalaxies.com/content.php?s=506b25c24215c4186c56c9a1374bfafa

It would be at Twin Galaxies studios. They are located in North Hollywood (not too far from UGC depending on where you live)
It would change to Saturday from 7pm to midnight-1am-ish
It will be on there WORKING stream (check out there site) with top of the line equipment
It will be FREE

Pros

Free
Top of the line streaming and playing equipment
Nice location (parking is easy)

Cons
It will be a Salty Skullgirls stream, meaning they will have ONLY Skullgirls (no BB, GG, XRD, VS)
They have a cap of 16ish people which I don't see as an issue

I would like to make the deal with them live for hopefully this Sat (so no salty at UGC on friday) if you guys agree. They will want it on a consistent basis since we will be added to their streaming schedule. PLEASE POST HERE ASAP AND TAG PEOPLE TO RESPOND

@Weatherbee @Mike_Z @Stuff @Midiman @Some Person

I would love to move here and I spent some time in the past few weeks looking and I would like to give them an answer soon. My vote is YES!

I'll go wherever the heck everyone decides to go but is there an address for this? I can't seem to find it.

Yeah, you're probably going to want to give an address

hmmm no GG? If he just means no stream time for GG that's fine, but they at least gotta let us have GG there. That's kind of a deal breaker for me, but if the majority decides on this place I'll go along with the decision.

My only issue is the 16 player cap, the reasoning being that I mean sure we have our usual group of like, 10 people showing up every week, but I liked the idea of Salty being a local ANYONE can go to.

All the pluses of going is great tho. (I'll just need to work out my schedule at work to rearrange things)

Can I just ask why the sudden change? Maybe I missed something.

Also I agree with both the previous points. Being restricted to one game is kinda lame, especially when most of the people that go right now play multiple things when the SG setups are taken or, you know, just feel like playing something else. And having a 16 player cap makes me suuuuuuper nervous about too many people happening to show up one week (or if it's a special occasion and more people make a point to come out) and having to be turned away and told to go home.

On top of that, doesn't almost everyone usually stay at UGC till like 2-3am? Having to leave around midnight is lame.

I'll get the address. I can also ask about more games. And I'll ask if there is a cap. If I can fix those, would you guys be happy?

And this isn't an arcade, so it won't be open to anyone. It's for the salty people. They want to do a skullgirls stream but I'll see if they don't mind 1 other game there.

But keep in mind, this isn't an arcade, it's a studio so it's not a place you can stroll in any day and play.

UGC has had a lot of sour experiences so far, and it's only gotten worse with certain going-ons especially more than one VERY recent occasion. I won't air it out here, but it's not great.

Agreed on every point pretty much though. I don't want to be restrictive, especially since we have had over 16 people show up frequently lately. I absolutely do not want to become some sort of invite-only sort of community, that's hella lame. Maybe not everyone can make it out all the time, but when they can, I want there to be room for them.

I would also hate excluding other games as well. Most, nearly all of us play other games, and often times its the ONLY time we can play those other games. I'd also really hate to not have a place for the VSav community if they also go this route, they worked really hard to get where they are too D: .

TIME, man... time is always a thing. Especially for the bums like me that drive a bit of distance to come out to these. Not a fan of the 1am end D:

FREE IS REALLY NICE but... we stand to lose a lot more. Keep it on the table for now, but I rather keep looking for more options.

The zip code is 91602. I'll get the exact address soon. They said it will be a designated skullgirls night. They want to showcase the game. So no other games will be there because they don't want other games there for that night. The 16 cap is temporary just for them to see how it goes the first couple weeks.

Edit: they will have multiple setups also. They want us to come to show there following skullgirls so this could be very beneficial for the game. It will NOT be invite only. It's just a temporary cap to see how our community will operate but they can accommodate more if it goes well.

We can try both Fri and sat and people can pic and choose or go to both if you wanna try it temporarily.

They have over 25,000 followers on twitch. This will bring ALOT of new eyes to skullgirls

This sounds like it's becoming more of an obligation than a "hang out and play video games" thing.

@everyone
The only distinguishing factor for me in this is that it is SATURDAY, not Friday. It would overlap with Rebel Up if that starts up again, and thus would probably become every other week instead of every week.
Otherwise, given recent events, all else is pluses. Do people have an opinion here?

@MegamanDS
Honestly Saturday sucks a LOT more than Friday for the reason I just mentioned...no possibility of Friday?

@EFHRK
It's more of a "we as a group would like to look at a new venue", it's still hang-out-and-play-games. The difference is that this venue cares lots about what we do, there is still no obligation for you to play all the time.

hmmm no GG? If he just means no stream time for GG that's fine, but they at least gotta let us have GG there. That's kind of a deal breaker for me, but if the majority decides on this place I'll go along with the decision.
I am pretty sure we can PLAY whatever we want, but I do admit to drooling at the idea of winning a lot of SG tournaments in a row because you decide not to show up...I, for one, would be okay hosting GG also. There should be more GGAC in the world.

Oh crap, I didn't think about the Rebel Up conflict. I thought we were going to do the every other week thing when Super gets started again.

It is true, everything is a plus at this point, I guess once we prove that we can bring people in frequently and get the cap raised, I'm completely down for this change. I guess I just felt that the "professional" pressure is going to (admittedly a good thing) light a fire under my butt to actually PLAY well.

(I really liked the casual nature of how Salty is)

So where are we going for this week? Still ugc?

This week? Still UGC, yes. But we need to have a decision for next week or inertia will keep us at UGC forever.

I have no problem with moving, especially if we are able to bring other games.

Their stream is at http://www.twitch.tv/twingalaxieslive. Wayyyyyyyy more subs than UGC's, but it looks like a different sort of audience so there's no telling if that'll make any difference for us in terms of exposure.

7pm to midnight-1am-ish
I don't live in SoCal but doesn't this really suck?
Usually you guys are finishing the Skullgirls tournament at that time.

Very much so, ye D: .

This is a good point I didn't even think about. Just because they have more subs doesn't mean there's a guarantee people are going to want to watch a local fighting game tournament, let alone get them interested enough to actually play. It's like how if a streamer that always played horror games would likely lose viewers if they just started streaming DDR or something.

Plus, I can't imagine the shitposting memers that inhabit the Salty chat are going to mesh well with a bunch of randos wondering when the skill runs are going to start again.

AND YET, if we don't do anything on it, those people that might watch CAN'T get interested enough to actually play via watching.
Also, if they broadcast from that venue...what they're showing when they show fighting games IS local fighting game tournaments...? :^P

I say it's an option at least worth checking out. Been wanting an excuse to not go to UGC for a while now, tbh. Only thing also is yeah, no othet games there. I would wanna get my sm4sh on, yo

We'll in all honesty, it's only ending at that time because we let it run that long. Our average is like 1 match every 11 minutes because everyone at salty except me (literally ) are playing other games and entered in every tournament (not saying it's a bad thing) so a 10 man tourney takes 5 hours. In reality, the tournament should take no more than an hour if run on 2 setups which would allow for other cool style match-up a or grudge matches or new character practice matches and a bunch of other things if focused on one game.

And 25k new eyes, you guys don't want to let Lab Zero's game get new exposure on the off chance that they might not like it? Cmon now, we need to at least let them see it and pitch it to them.

And you also have to think, the studios loved the pitch of skullgirls show on sat. We don't get too many opportunities where people are welcoming us to do a show in their studios for FREE and use all their equipment and audience. Just saying, I was grateful when they said yes. But then again, I ONLY play SG so I fell in love for Skullgirls Saturday show.

The more I think about it, it amuses me a bit because I don't think it was until we became regulars at Rebel Up that most of us started branching off into VSav and +R. Then again, I joined Salty around the time of Squigly's development, so I'm not sure if anyone besides Bang and Weatherbee and Mike played other games besides SG.

Day wise, I'm fine with either one, just I'm more inclined for Friday night because many of the random events or plans I make fall on Saturdays.

... North Hollywood ...

Done. Sign me all-the-way up.

(Saturday's a tad bit of a bummer though, but everything else sounds like a huge plus.)

I found the address:
10911 Riverside Dr. Suite 100 North Hollywood, CA 91602
(their stream logo matches their facebook that lists the address)

Ya I didn't really make that public unless we are gonna go there. But I guess it's fine.

EDIT: nevermind, I didn't know they openly advertise it on their facebook.

Just down the 101? I can dig this.

Hmm... Detours to White Rabbit might be a tad inconvenient, though...

EDIT: While on the subject, what's there to eat around there? What's their policy on food, actually? Are we allowed to eat in their studio?

Just to be 100% clear before I get in my car tonight: is there a salty at ugh today?

Today I guess is still at ugc since there was no clear decision. I guess you guys can discuss together tonight to move locations.

I posted on twitter, I'll post here too. I will no longer be going to salty if it's at ugc. It's just a bunch of stuff for years that has been building up but recent events involving my friends made me make my decision.

Still wills support SG community and the fgc as much as I can.

Today I guess is still at ugc...

Would two weekly events be worthwhile (especially if one is free and at a better venue)?

Salty and Salty Sequel. I, for one, wouldnt mind. I'd come out to both as much as possible, and be a bit more incentivized to show up on saturdays cuz its practically in my neighborhood. And free. And in an office building. With folks that want SG there.

And seeing as he's my ride, if we could go ahead and come up with a resolution to all this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't think a ride to ugc is going to be a problem anymore after what took place yesterday.

Dare I ask what "took place"

A lot of yelling, really. Legitimately angry yelling.

I couldn't read the whole thing but apparently the embed lets me copy the whole post so here it is for those that don't use facebook like me.

Dear Skullgirls community,

I want to start off by stating the great respect and gratitude that I and UGC as a whole have for your community. In the past 2 years we have had the honor of meeting and getting to know many of you and we don't take that lightly. When we first got together, UGC dedicated a mural to the community and further inducted 2 champions (Wing Zero, MegamanDS) into our 'Wall of Champions". From someone who has hosted tournaments and gatherings for almost every community in the FGC, I consider the Skullgirls community to being one of the most polite, chill group of people who still express individuality and diversity without attacking each other, but rather protecting each other. Its impressive to say the least

As a TO, I have always taken the initiative to include Skullgirls in my projects and this comes from many reasons. First off, the game itself mesmerizes me. There is definitely something about the game, the way it functions, the characters, the depth of the art work, and most importantly, the community that keeps it alive. I know for a fact that some of the things Mike Z has done to that game should be commended and in some sense patented.

On Friday October 7th, UGC had ran into a staffing issue. This was caused by 2 associates of UGC misunderstanding each other in regards to opening the store, the time to open, and the usual closing time for Friday nights. In one sense, this is bad business on the part of UGC, but on the other hand, both associates are fairly new, with one of them being only on his 3rd day on the job this particular Friday night. During this time, I was driving back from the Westwood area with my son who had just fallen asleep in the car. I am not sure if many of you know this, but I am a single father and although I own/manage UGC, I am limited when it comes to my full attention to UGC when I have my son.

Now I know many of you can care less about UGC having a misunderstanding within 2 associates, or the fact that they are new, or that I am a single dad, but the fact remains that we needed to get the doors open and to accommodate the Skullgirls community.

With that said, after receiving several nervous text and a phone conversation with my associate I felt it was necessary to step in even if it was over the phone because my son was already asleep. Although I completely felt in the right to take action, it was still inappropriate. At the time, I felt that I had to protect my associate and his confidence with the idea of him deciding to stay at work and keeping the doors open while also trying to handle things while my son was asleep for the night.

However, the conversation I had with Davita was completely inappropriate on my part for many reasons. For one, I should of been having a conversation with Mike Z who is the representative of the community and not Davita who not only do I know, but has never done anything but showed the utmost respect to me and the UGC establishment. For this, I sincerely apologize.

Last, I want to again express my great appreciation for the Skullgirls community as well as confidently acknowledge your communities strength, values, and loyalty. I would also like to personally apologize to Davita for the inappropriate phone conversation and to anyone else who feels that this misunderstanding has affected them personally or as a community.

Sincerely
Roy

Or maybe there's a better way to see the whole thing through the embed? I dunno.

I don't think we're coming back to UGC anymore though. So will we be doing the TwinGalaxies thing or what's going on right now?

EDIT: Suddenly the embed actually expands? Had to just refresh I guess.

The only reason why I haven't been to Salty very often is because my Fridays are always booked. I'd love to see it happen on Saturdays...

I've also heard some sketchy things about UGC/the owner so I was kind of hoping you guys would bounce sooner or later...
