One Big Night! One Big Show! One Big Man! One Big Band! General Discussion

I just found this randomly in a match. Why is BB's HK Giant Step full-screen knockdown considered a projectile? It can be reflected by diamond reflector, which can then lead into a combo via a conversion.

I couldn't stop laughing when it happened.

How good is Big Band, exactly? I'm interested in maining him, He's probably my favorite character to play as.

mmmmmh, Big B is a good character [heck the whole cast is good so that's not much of a statement...]

Big Band is a power character, most of his moves have long start up but high damage. Unoptimized combos can net you 6-7k for a bar of meter. Optimized combos can get you closer to 10K. Just don't fall for the trappings of using his Brass Knuckles all the time...

To over come Big Band's Sluggish moves you can parry moves just like in Street Fighter 3. so Mid/ High attacks you can tap forward with in 13 frames and you'll parry the attack, and with low attacks tapping down will parry those kinds of moves.

Big band has a couple of really awful matchups, Robo Fortune and Parasoul being the main ones.

Outside of that he's pretty good and he has some of the most powerful assist attacks in the entire game so he shows up on teams a lot for that reason.

I thought Fukua was the worst match up after Robo Fortune.

There's no character in Skullgirls who is unplayably bad, if that's what you're wondering. Certainly not Big Band!

The important thing to remember about Big Band is that he has a lot of damage and a lot of range, but you have to know when and where to use his tools (because a lot of them are very unsafe). I see lots of new Big Bands who use H Brass Knuckles or Beat Extend religiously, despite them being very punishable on whiff or block. If you avoid doing this and learn the ins and outs of all his moves, you can be a very strong Big Band.

IMO he has some not-excellent matchups, but I'm not sure that's something to be concerned about when you're first learning the game. Once you're at a point where you can understand Big Band's weaknesses without people telling you what they are, you'll also be good enough to figure out how to best cover them with the rest of your team.

Worst MU for BB easily, imo, is Fortune, and no other character really comes close. After that may be Valentine or Robo/Parasoul, but Fortune is consistently the most troublesome.

What does fortune do to big band that the others can't? Doesn't she have to take as many, if not more, risks than the ones you mentioned?

Generally, no, her mobility + small size likes to hover in areas that BB cannot reach or has to commit heavily to go in on, places where no DPs or A trains or ground or air buttons can reach, and she can easily vary up the timing on anything she does which makes parrying or frame-perfect-late-DPs not an easy answer either. She doesn't zone like Robo or Fukua, but her mid-range game from those factors dictate every tool BB has way more than the others.

This is basically the same principle as Valentine as well, where you almost flat-out cannot use several tools because Val jMP destroys armor and stuffs nearly every DP and hits everything and has the same mobility + small size that is difficult to hit making mid range the killer part here.

This is almost true for Robo Fortune, but her buttons aren't nearly as strong as the other 2 so you end up having a lot more common scenarios or ranges where BB can challenge her when not at complete full screen (see Mike's post about those tips for that MU). She controls fullscreen the best but she can't win the whole game from fullscreen without making many big risks when she has to eventually gain back space.

So with that said, what are effective strategies against fortune and val? What are the risks associated with said strategies? Why don't we move this discussion to the match-up thread?
