I've been talking to a couple people about it, including @Vadsamoht. The general consensus is that public opinion should be sampled before trying to start anything, so there's a poll. Responses are hugely helpful, so please leave those too.

Would people want a Power Ranking type system on Skullheart? Essentially the SRK world rankings, but with actually properly weighted events, correct names, no duplicate entries, all the events we attend, proper character usage, etc. and it could be featured here on Skullheart. I think they even could split up rankings into specific local areas, and maybe even online rankings? I'm not too sure on the specifics of that, though.

Apparently, if we were to implement a Power Ranking system, it would be similar to the one on 8wayrun. Here's a video preview of that in action:

curious to know if there would be any weight placed on version/year/etc.

for example, would winning the biggest tournament of the year in vanilla/SDE (aka evo) mean the same thing as winning the biggest tournament of the year in 2nd encore? would NEC 2014 be rated the same as NEC 2015, obviously in the future we are moving away from big E events but NEC in both those years was a big event (relative to the time), 2015 was much better attended however. would events be weighted by number of entrants?

Ideally, our biggest events of a given year would be weighted the most. NEC 2015 would be weighted highly, I would say weighted over/about the same as EVO 2015 probably.

The points would decay over time, tho, so even super important past events would be scaled a bit by the current day (don't ask me by how much, I'm not the guy for that)

this definitely would be cool thing to add, is there a way to have character breakdowns also?

Might it be possible to organise how people are ranked based on the people they beat at a tournament? For instance, instead of someone gaining a bunch of points for placing within top 8 at combo breaker, if they managed to beat the number 1 ranked player they would receive a massive boost to their points even if they ended up placing poorly overall. This would also solve the problem of having to decide how much weight is given to any particular tournament as bigger tournaments would naturally have more good players so if you did well in it, chances are you would have beaten more highly ranked players than if you did well in a small event, thus earning more points.

That sort of system might be too complicated to setup and run as you would have to go through each tournament and note who beat who (a cut-off point for how far you need to get in a tournament for it to count might be useful in limiting this). It would also probably need rankings to be setup beforehand (likely through the original idea of giving points based on placement at big events like originally suggested) and then future events would use the players beaten system.

I'm just spitballing ideas, that may be too complex. A rankings system sounds cool though.

It does sound a bit complex, but I think most of the potential uses of the system would already be set in what it's capable of. It would be us using an existing plugin for this.

Sounds lit. If whatever they're using is publicly available for us to yank, Smashboards has an amazing system that lets you pull all kinds of statistics from their data. Character representation in top N, limit the dataset to a specific range of dates, search for when specific players have fought each other, etc.

iirc, it would be the same program.

I'm all for it but honestly we should just start it with 2nd Encore tournaments. IMO everything prior wouldn't really be needed and would be added work thats not really needed.

We'd be using the same plugin that smashboards is using, so unless they've dome some customization work behind the scenes we should be able to do everything possible on there.

Depends what you mean by breakdowns. If you have a look at the ranking systems on 8wayrun.com or smashboards they use the same pluign we're looking at. The plugin (and several of the others in use on this site) was written by Jaxel of 8wayrun, so although they're not the sole focus it's been written with the needs of FGs in mind.

TBH I don't see the reason to avoid putting the information in where we've got it (at least for the more major tournaments), especially because it's already been collected into one place with the tournaments results thread so we wouldn't need to go searching for it. That said, we should definitely put a priority on newer events before adding the older ones.

Maybe let people search to see what the rankings were per patch? I don't particularly need that info, I'd we just get all 2nd encore stuff I'm happy, but if we can and someone wants it then I don't see why not.

ive been working on an unrelated project regarding SG tournament histories and I'm using version select, I think it's the best way to implement this kind of thing. I started with NWM 2015 because despite it not being "2nd encore", CB 2015 was a big enough tournament that I would definitely think it should be included, but technically that was on beo patch so i started on beo patch.

I think Beo patch on is a good place to start the current placement listings. If we go back to the very beginning, I feel like Vanilla, SDE, MDE, Eliza patch, and Beo patch should be the groupings. Maybe Eliza could be melded into MDE grouping, but those felt like the different stages of the game.

I think its worth giving each version its own grouping since pretty much every patch changed the way a character plays. The way I did it, and maybe this wouldn't be relevant to the power rankings, was to have version stored as a number (vanilla is 1, SDE is 2, etc.) so you could search for matches starting from <x> patch, not just ON that patch.
