Freedom Planet: 2D Sonic-Inspired Indie Platformer

I was really annoyed by the announcement of this sequel, because GalaxyTrail still hasn't finished any of the Stretch Goal DLC content for the game (Milla's Adventure Mode, playable Torque and Spade). I feel like they should finish their first game (one that people donated to make possible) before letting people know about the sequel. Especially given the year and a half wait on this content.

But on the same day: http://steamcommunity.com/games/FreedomPlanet/announcements/detail/58909787501516377

The update has a public beta Torque (Time Attack only, some stages are removed) and beta Milla Adventure Mode (still haven't tried it yet). I'm still really frustrated with the timing of this announcement, but less so now that we are getting a piece of the promised content.

So Torque is really fun. Like, really really fun. Given that I've kind of lost a lot of enjoyment for Freedom Planet over time, it's really surprising to me how much fun I was having with Torque. His moveset is like a combination of X from Mega Man X and the protag from Gunstar Heroes, with a bit of Tails sprinkled in.

Apparently the update also made some fixes to the Adventure Mode cutscenes, getting rid of unnecessary filler and a particularly bad case of telling instead of showing. I was VERY surprised by that, but quite happy. Adventure Mode's cutscenes and story have quite a few issues, and this update actually addresses a number of them.

it makes sense for them to announce they're working on Freedom Planet 2 and also tinkering with it, considering they are going to aim for 2017 instead of "soon". It's not as if they aren't going to deploy the rest of the DLC, as evidenced by the beta test and announcement?

It's neat though so that's all I care about, to be honest; They're not silly and they know how to deliver a thing I think!

Freedom Planet 2' systems sound neat though, and their sprites are hella powerful

Some nice additions to the voice cast for the sequel.

- Sarah Anne Williams
- Chris Sabat
- Josh Grelle
- Lindsay Jones

It's great to see it in motion finally! The gameplay looks more reminiscent of the first game than I was expecting, and that's good. I'm glad Stephen's shifting a little from the original formula, but not too much.

For anyone that hasn't been following anything on the game, 1upTV did a really nice interview with the team a few months ago where they did some good Q&A, and Woofle already previewed a lot of her new WIP tracks on her Soundcloud. Everyone involved has leveled up a bunch over the last few years and it looks like they're going in hard for this sequel!

Things no-one in the thread has said
- Respawn in-place for 1 life (we knew about this since 2015)
- Insta-Shield (we knew about this since 2015)
- Cyclone has an independent sprite covering Lilac, neat
- Camera Zooming
- Command Jump out of her special attack for meter, neat
- Item boxes exist, with animation ( I hope that animation is skippable, although it's just the right amount of short )
- Shields give you 2 pips of health? No idea whether or not pips for Shields apply over your health, are a threshold for when they disappear, or their own health displayed on top of yours, or any combination
- Bonus gates, which also leave sprites behind? No idea what use they are
- Real slow-down instead of the fake pause-and-unpause they had in the old game ( this isn't always that easy in the tools you have )
- You can acquire MMX4 Nova Strike somewhere down the line ( Improved special ).
- Timer icon has minute/seconds hands, which is neat
- HUD Lives icon blinks every so often

If they manage to make what I felt was the most boring character in Freedom Planet incredibly interesting, I can't wait to see what they've done with the rest of the cast AND play the demo.

I hope Carol has sick donut spins for attacks when she uses her motorcycle.

Carol's apparently getting some new attacks with the bike, and can even chuck it as a projectile. They also said she'll be able to use teleport discs as an ability when she's off the bike. I really hope they show some of that in her trailer.

They also said Milla's getting some new melee attacks, and she'll be able to charge and store multiple blocks. Combat with her might be pretty interesting now, but I hope they don't trade out any of her speed tricks from the first game either.

The dog is packing a bit more bite this time!

Jesus they really stepped it up in the animation department. Can't wait until this comes out.

YOU BETRAYED THE LAW!

So did you guys try out the demo yet?

The main cast feels pretty fun to me. I love how much air mobility Lilac has now with the air uppercut and meterless cyclones. Milla is also pretty nuts with how much airtime she can get from momentum bursts, especially off the ground, reminds me a lot of Plague Knight. Carol feels good too, although I agree with some folks that say her bike was a little nerfed since dashing with it currently doesn't damage enemies.

Neera I'm not too big on for now. It's kinda fun to run around downsmashing everything, but her hitboxes are a little weird and her freeze disc uses too much meter to feel useful. Reminds me of how Lilac felt in the early FP1 demos though, so I'll wait and see what they do with her.

Holy fucking shit! This game looks incredible!

Damn this game looks great. I finally played FP1 for the first time recently. Super dope, I'll be getting FP2 day one.
