Gaming General Discusison

I know and the website was down last time I checked. Tragic.

Now I can't link "Capcoms 12 year old art-director interview" everytime a new sf5 character is unveiled.

So that there The Surge (Sci-Fi Souls-like) is confirmed to be Singleplayer only, holy shit, what a deal breaker, I cannot imagine playing a Souls-like without any multiplayer or online aspects whatsoever, what a shame, I thought we'd finally get the Future Souls a lot of people were holding out for

I'm the opposite. I give no fucks about the online elements and honestly enjoyed Bloodborne/DS3 better without online due to PS+ limitations.

PvP in souls is a kusoge-tier fighting game. Co-Op breaks the game hard and ruins any boss fight you take peeps into. The messages can be cool, but honestly I find it more immersive to be solo in these lonely games.

Has there been a worse localization of a game's title than "Berserk and the Band of the Hawk" in like 15 years?

It's like Koei America's entire knowledge of Berserk is "I think Berserk is a pretry cool guy. eh kill demeons and doesnt afreid of anything".
They should hang out with Atlus USA and become the shittiest meme company of all time.

Fresh batch of Leaks, both from WB Games
Target leaked this cover

And there's a "leak" going around on Reddit about a new Batman game, take it with a through grain of salt

Oh god, more of this trash? The last one was an embarrassment; only good thing about it was the idea of the nemesis system and even that wasn't executed well. Remembering the ending still baffles me.

Did you mean NISA?

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is the most generic awful title I have ever seen for a thing in my life

The "Gold Edition" DLC leak basically says you make "A New Ring of Power" (DUMB AS SHIT), and that you "raise an army of orcs" (EQUALLY DUMB AS SHIT)
They're playin' fast and loose with the Tolkien Lore again.

can they be nice orcs
can I just have an entire army of orc boy scouts sundering the land
with kindness and good manners

Fits perfectly then, first game was as generic watered down video game as it gets. Have you seen how it ends? Not only is it absurdly stupid but you can tell they were proud of it.

Basically the main character says "It's time to make a new ring" as the camera zooms in on his face and it immediately cuts to black, credits roll with rock music playing.
Also, contender for you.

I mean yeah, that was the sequel hook after all. I honestly don't even understand who these games are supposed to be for on the story level, they acted like it was an exciting announcement that Celebrimbor was in the first game, which would only matter to people who actually read The Silmarillion and shit, but then everything else is not only incredibly stupid but completely inconsistent with any of the lore in any context. And then the gameplay is just generic garbage, so it's not winning anything there either.

People being upset about a sequel are weird.
If you didn't like the first game, just ignore it and don't bother those that do?

The game was ok

The whole idea of making a badass action game centered around the LOTR universe just doesn't work thematically or tonally.

Half the point of LOTR was that it was a subversion of classical myth/legend/folklore. Instead of the manly action dude saving the day by killing the big bad, it's weak, timid, ordinary people (Hobbits) who ultimately save the universe via moral and spiritual strength, fortitude, and self sacrifice, rather than physical prowess.

You're not allowed to call something dumb without being upset?

Official trailer for Shadow of War out

Gameplay reveal date is... March 8th? Like the "save the date" for the Batman thing?
Oooooh boy is that gonna be a wild day

Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people missed that point entirely. Even the famous stuff inspired by Tolkien (like D&D) has a tendency to miss the message or present an opposite.

I have every right to talk about how I don't like a game just as much as you have every right to talk about why you do like a game.

To be fair, there's a difference between window dressing and core message. The core message- rejection of power- is very nice and all, but sometimes you just want to kill some orcs. And since most videogames are a power fantasy, they're not a very good medium for the message.

Although, I guess since Tolkien made the point that anyone who'd beat Sauron with Sauron's power would be an even worse Dark Lord, games can well convey that. "I get to be a bigger, better Sauron? Awesome!"

To be fair, D&D has no real plot and is more of a template for telling your own stories. You could run it in the style of everything from Game of Thrones to Undertale.

Or you could just ERP.

Also tangential but I dislike of the term "power fantasy" and feel it's frequently misapplied, especially to games. But that's another story.

Just got Nier Automata and it's really gooood.
I was expecting action rpg goodness but I wasn't expecting the most calming and relaxing fishing experience of my life.

The difficulty also feels different from the demo's
In hard most things either one hit kills you or kills you in two hits. I think it was like that for the demo too, but the difference is that in the release you only start with the auto-heal chip for the average and easy difficulties.

Just a heads up, we have a Platinum Games thread which has been where Nier Automata and related stuff has been discussed since it got announced.

And yeah, fishing in this feels like an apology for the first game's fishing.

Lab Zero swear jar.
right now.
I need to see how fast it fills.

I'm liking streets of rogue. Playing the early alpha build then finding out there is a free weekend on steam was a pleasant surprise.

I guess this is more of a backseat design idea than any specific game, but I've been thinking about fighting games and horror.

Videogames often give the player an experience of a powerful avatar, "Every game is Mech Warrior." Horror, by contrast, often takes that power away, creating fear through controllable helplessness. This is often a problem in "traditional" horror games, because at the end of the day every single-player game is meant to be beaten.

Fighting games face an apparent contradiction of nature: Characters exist as avatars of power, but the player essentially acts as a designer to block gameplay from the other player. This means, at big enough skill disparity, one player is helpless. I myself became salty and uninstalled.

Combine these two ideas, though, and the liability could become an asset. In a fighting match, tools are there so you could win, but there isn't a guarantee that you should. In the worst-case scenario, the other guy is way better than you and a dick about it. How can you make that fun? Perhaps inserting elements of horror to build pre-match atmosphere might make unlucky matchmaking easier to swallow. Get a bit of the Silent Hill treatment where the game reacts to the player's style. For instance, pre-match voicelines acknowledging "oh no, not you again," "will this nightmare end?," or "...I've made my peace. Let's go!" A spooky optional soundtrack and lighting filter could also help.

Thoughts? Has this been done before? Do I ramble too much online without playing anything new?

It is a good day for those that purchased that Serious Sam humble bundle(or those that bought most of the games). There is a fusion given to those that have the hd version of the forist encounter and hd second encounter as well as Serious Sam 3. It basically has a bunch of new features. I just wish that the vr player exploit would be fixed.

Been playing Blaster Master Zero lately.

So far, I'm fairly convinced that Inti Creates doesn't have the same chops for level design they developed during the Mega Man Zero age, but that being said, this is still a wonderful little game with a ton of fun gimmicks even if it's not as tight or challenging as the original.

I'm considering this Inti's act of redemption after Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty No.9.

Depends on how far you plan on going with it. Typical vs game with a slasher aesthetic, or something more survival horror oriented from the ground up

see if you can spot a familiar face in this trailer :D

Nope. Who is it?

Is that really footage from one of your games?

Yup! Also check the video description shouting out all the players that contributed footage.

So Minion Masters is available on Steam for free until April 6th (you get to keep the game after that too). It'll also be free once it comes out of Early Access, but has been $20 to keep a smaller playerbase in the beta.

It's an arena minion-summoner game kinda like Clash Royale, except without as much of the freemium grinding (cards don't have to be leveled up after unlock, for one) and with more depth to the battle mechanics.

Recently discovered Terrordrome after Maximilian Dood's video about it. Ash plays amusingly similar to Beowulf with his "grab and takedown" moves. Plays a little clunky, but I think the slasher aesthetic works really well. [EDIT] Also, beating people up with my purse as Herbert West is pretty fun.
Also recently played One Finger Death Punch after it was free on chrono.gg. Tons of fun.
