Shin Megami Tensei and Persona

Truth be told, I want to spoil Persona 5, but there's a few people around here I actually hold a decent opinion of, so I'm holding back

aww dad :'^) i-i love you too

no, its more like
'hey look guys, AtlusJP really doesn't want people to spoil this game, so in your best interests, please don't do anything with the game in a way it can be spoiled for others"

but hey, lets treat games like bags of money. because "muh lets player numbers!"

or keep posting random fake spoilers. it certainly proves people have the moral high ground.
Bullshit. People that watch streams or let's play don't care about spoilers and people that share these won't be stopped by this dumb rule.

So, you're reducing the chance of preserve people's memories of the game (taking screenshots is blocked) and share content with people that actually want it in a stream way

I won't even get into the fair use territory

taking screenshots of the KoF arcade mode and art gallery is blocked too and nobody complained. people on social media can still upload screenshots, and that's fine. but everyone acting like Atlus is bullying everyone and outright threatening them is way overboard. also, if people want memories of the game, then they can play it.

and fair use is a slippery slope, my friend. it does protect your rights, but it doesn't mean its a card you can flash to say you can do whatever you want with a product.

Someone should do a let's play and just put black bars over everyone's eyes and bleep out the word persona.

Atlus will be none the wiser

okay, that would be funny just for the shits and giggles.
I would be on board with that.

Nonsense again: there are tons of videos, playthroughs and streams in both YouTube and twitch and no one was banned for flashing its main aspect (the fighting)

Persona, however, is a case of the dev punishing for showing the main aspect of the game.

Damn, when ASW flagged a channel of a forum member no one liked that, not even lab Zero. they respected it because ASW published the Japanese version of SG and paid for the dub, but iirc, they even tried to contact arc about it!

It shows a difference of perspective and respect with your present customers.

I wasn't arguing about perspective, I was giving you a better idea of what fair use actually is.
it IS a slippery slope. it can work for both sides.

As someone who doesn't have a way to get p5 immediately(or soon) these guidelines are very beneficial to me personally. I actually want to limit myself to as little spoilers as possible until I can play the game myself. While Atlus' use of DMCA is the equivalent of using 10 military grade bazookas to squash an ant, in the end it does what I think is intended: To scrub spoilers from mainstream view. Of course people will spoil the game and if you look hard enough you can find them, BUT it definitely reduces the chance of accidental discovery. I mean unless you frequent a place that likes to shitpost constantly. Then you're definitely boned from the retaliation.

Oh joy, I had to start glazing my eyes over for this thread. See you all when I finish P5 in like a month.

PS4 version-owner here. Just a lame slip of paper warning about seizures and shit in my copy.
That is a shame. The online manual looks amazngly laid out although it definitely is for web and not for print. I miss the days of game manuals. Stuff doesn't feel complete without them.

Is more the kamikaze spam that gets me. And the infuriating encounter rate
It's been a long time since I played P2 but yeah, Xibalba was a pain in the dick. Like FF3 crystal tower pain.

You wanna know who does care about manuals? Marvelous. Everyone should just do what Marvelous does.

honestly, if they're gonna remove manuals from the boxes, they really might as well put a "Manual" option on the main menus of games

I'll only accept persona spoilers if they come in the form of a fighting game roster.

Since I"m a poor person and actually have to buy a new DS3 before even attempting to buy P5, I've been looking up some stuff online.

Morgana is like 5 times more pleasant than Teddie was. I was going to ask why is that but then I remembered that he was living with Yosuke and everything made sense.

uhhhh

I read a page ago and I don't feel like reading this one but I wanted to post anyway

About the spoilers thing, I feel like an important point is being missed:

Why have Atlus get all draconian when it should be up to you to avoid spoilers?

Like, when I was playing Trails In The Sky, do you think I went and watched streams of it and browsed the tv tropes page and read youtube comments on end-game ost tracks? No, duh.

Just exercise some caution. And if someone really wants to spoil something for you, there's nothing Atlus or anyone else can do about it. Atlus could be complete assholes and it still wouldn't stop some random friend from blurting out spoilers at you.

You're right, I should be more careful to avoid spoilers in a game I like so much.
In fact, I love it so much that I want to listen to the main theme again because it's so good.
Oh, there's a video in the suggested tab that says "x was the traitor" and all the footage was from a twitch stream. Guess I wasn't careful enough.

I know this doesn't completely justify them, but I can still see why they want to avoid spoilers

I'm definitely of the mind that it's up to the people to not actively go around watching streams/videos or reading through spoiler tags on forums that talk about P5. The last trailer I've watched was one all the way from 2015! The only thing I know that could be considered a "spoiler" is who some of the characters are, but it's not like I looked up their bios or anything.

What I think Atlus is really trying to do is protect their product. When you've been working on an extremely hyped game that's been years in the making, you'll probably want people to go out, buy it, and experience it themselves.

However, I do think this is a bit extreme since the game had already come out in Japan and we didn't get all these restrictions then. Why weren't these in place when it came out there? Do they really expect all the people in the west to go around making all of the videos/streams?

And as said, there's nothing stopping anyone from just spoiling something out loud or in a video title, even if it's just shitposting.

Then why is the rule a blanket "NO POSTING ABOUT ANYTHING EVER OR WE'LL STRIKE YOU" instead of "If you post spoilers in your title, then we'll strike you"? If spoilers are what they actually cared about, why is "Let's Play Persona 5 Part 62" equally as bad as "'HOLY SHIT!!!!! HOW COULD YOU (Character Name)???!?!?!?' MY FIRST REACTION TO THE TRAITORS REVEAL" in Atlus's eyes? The rule is too broad for it to only be about spoilers.

Not to mention you can spoil people without the footage. In comments or making videos using only artwork as visuals and putting the same title. YouTube would tag the very same thing in the soundtrack video.

Yeah, nothing stops me from running around the internet posting "Sae is Satan" or something.

I also feel like this attitude towards spoilers is probably a response to the Gamespot review that spoiled the game.
maybe Atlus heard about it and was like "nope. no one spoils the game."

Any Approximation of how long the game is? Been wanting to start it but because I'm so mentally ill I'm worried I'll start it and never finish and focus on something else

it's about as long as vanilla P4, shorter than Golden

And how long is that you sundried meme
My P4 first run was around 60-70ish hours, so probably around that much, maybe a bit shorter.

Meh.

The lack of scripted events is probably what makes it so much shorter.

Which is part of the problem with P5. The game needs a few more scenes of the PT being buds. It'd flesh them out as a group more, and it'd make the characters more likable.

I really don't think Atlus Japan gives the slightest shit about an english review of their game (Especially considering that this restriction was also put in place when the game launched in Japan, as well as the game not supporting the PS4's Share features *at all*.) This has absolutely nothing to do with that review.

Yeah, it's more to do with Japan not really liking spoilers at all, especially within first time of release. They enforced it so everyone can experience it by buying the game and starving people of info who want it so they can buy the game.

Why the hell are there party member abilities that give you more chances in demon negotiation? Shadows have defined, consistent personalities in this game so it's not like you have an excuse for screwing up the multiple times it takes to fail a negotiation.

Negotiations overall are a lot more forgiving then they've ever been.

Probably because demons are being held at gunpoint and can't exactly ask you for cash and then scram. Future SMT protagonists should take note.

Yeah, but I'm not complaining about that.

I'm saying when you can literally use analyze on hold up to see which one of like four personality types a demon has, so you can answer accordingly, and you already get two chances, do you really need a randomly offered third chance as a reward for your social links? I'd rather have a different bonus.

Well not everyone is going to pick up on the personalities. A friend of mine who's a lot more casual about smt than me always just guesses more less. That extra chance is a lot for him.

If only there were a dedicated stat in RPGs to be used for social encounters
Something that makes you more charismatic or something
I just can't think of the right word to describe such a stat
You mean, Wisdom?

Well not everyone is going to pick up on the personalities
It displays in analyze, you don't need to pick up on it, which is my point.
