Since discussion for Nioh got outta control in Gaming general, I decided to split it all off into a thread

Nioh is a Souls-like made by Tecmo Koei and Team Ninja, set in Feudal Japan but with Yokai being a very real reality, you play as a British man who comes to Japan to stop the insidious plot of an Alchemist, though, you shouldn't care too much about the plot, you should care more about the smooth gameplay and the fact you're killing Yokai, it's pretty good

So talk about Nioh here, maybe set up some Co-op (Or PvP once added)

And if you want, there's the launch trailer for Nioh to get you interested

Warning: don't spend requests on Tome unless you REALLY want whatever the request is. After a certain mission you get by talking to her you get a second request menu that has way better bonuses.

If you have light armor with a katana you can get a combo ender that's a backflip you can combine this with the skill that lets you cancel ki pulse into Iai draw and use the multi hit Iai move that moves you forward before attacking, you can do a combo, backflip, pulse, jump forward and Iai draw with multiple slashes as a single combo and it's the coolest shit.

If want to use ninja tools the third bomb (Mega Horoku-doma) is extremely useful, Kunai are just Shuriken but way better (they do a ton of stamina damage), Makibishi are caltrops and the Makibishi ball is super good they make it so enemies can't dodge and walk slowly (regular Makibishi are thrown at kind of weird angle to your right instead of directly in front of you), the poison bombs are good, paralysis stuff gives you a free "grapple", power pills are something you should get regardless of build since they're a great buff, same for the backstab skill.

If you're running a ninja build Hanzo's set is probably the best because of set bonuses, you need 12 body and 12(13?) skill to equip it and 1 stamina to make it the lightest class (blue). Bat (15 spirit required, converts agility into damage) and rabbit (18 spirit required, +75 Ninja power) are the best animals I've found so far.

25 is the highest spirit requirement an animal has.

This game is fucking awesome.

Also DO NOT attack mimics or Nurikabe. If you're near a Nurikabe check the nearby graves for a sign of what to do, if you don't want to get open a mimic chest (not that it actually matters) you can whistle and they'll come out on their own. Mimic chests have three lines instead of two.

I'm sorta leveling up all my attributes except Stamina (I got no intent of using Axes), i'm sword/kusarigama at the moment, with some stuff in Dex because items are useful, I'm hoping I'm not spreading myself too thin because right now I'm level 34-ish and nothings above 12

Im using Axes and Swords and have only died to the Umi boss so far. Going Ninja and trying to keep light, but its hard sometimes lol. Game feel easier than Darksouls, which I feel is good.

Suzaku is busted, holy shit. Especially in the level after you get it since you can keep the meter running indefinitely because there is always another enemy to kill just a foot away.

Im stuck on Umi-Bozu. I cant find the other torches in the level and dont want to look up a guide. I know its weak to fire but...ugh...its the only boss so far to give me trouble D:

Assuming you got the first one, when you leave the second shrine you enter a big room, boss door is far to your right. On the left wall is a Nurikabe, near the end of the room. That way takes you to the third, I think you can get to the second from there too but I'm not sure. Pass by the Nurikabe to get to the second one, it'll be to your right a good distance.

@North888 Also, have some Hyottoko masks? Like 3 of them will kill him, no effort required. Makes the challenge for beating him with no torches super easy.

I have a bunch. Ill Have to try it. I was trying to use my fire talismans but I kept getting hit by that death laser and dieing like a dumbass...despite nearly perfecting most of the other bosses Q_Q.

Thanks for the help! :D

Beat the main game, there is a post game story mission though oddly enough, as well as some sub-missions and new game plus stuff.

The last boss is fucking dumb. Other than that and a few minor problems; amazing game.

I thought I'd go to the next level but then I got stuck on Muneshige or w/e his name is
Good fucking lord no co-op and no living weapon is such a kick to the nuts
I had no trouble with Muneshige. But you're going to have fun, first post game mission is that duel again at level like 139 recommended, and he has a different samurai boss with him that you have to fight at the same time.

Thanks for the help! :D
No problem, will try to answer whatever questions anyone has or help anyone in need.

You mean tachibana? I recommend fast or mid speed weapons. I beat him with mid stance axes. Constantly back away from him and dash back whenever he sheathes his sword. Time it right and he'll miss his dash. Wait for him to sheathe, back up, and do a spinning attack that makes him travel forward. He'll be wipe open and low on stamina at that point. Hit him a few times and get a critical. Rinse and repeat. Just dodge and abuse his fairly low stamina for the first fight.

Fyi: don't try to block tachibana much. He'll eat your stamina for breakfast and your health bar for brunch.

I no longer care about how dumb the last boss is, that post game story mission is fucking rad.

When the last cutscene with Kelly happened I was wondering if it was implying what I thought it was, and it was. Makes his design in this so much better now that I know why he looks like that.
He's a homunculus made by Dee.

Just beat Honda & Muneshige fight on NG+. Fuck that fight, holy shit. Honda will cast heal over time and there is literally nothing you can do to stop him from getting back to full health once he does, it took 10 fucking minutes to kill him where it only took me about a minute to kill Muneshige even with Honda stabbing me in the back during the process.

Do I at least get to have another Rock in the rematch?
It's the same map.

The next free updates are as follows:

  • Late March – High-difficulty missions added. There are 10 types of missions, including missions with the feel of boss rushes.
  • Late April – PvP implemented.
The first downloadable content, “Dragon of Tohoku,” will launch in late April and add the following:

  • New weapon types
  • New scenarios
  • New characters
  • New guardian spirits
  • New yokai
  • New stages
The second downloadable content will be called “Japan’s Best Warrior,” and the third, “Peaceful and Tranquil.”
The idea that there are multiple new weapon types (plural) in the first DLC alone is pretty nuts, I'm extremely excited. I only have one mission left on NG+ (certain boss tag team mission in last area) I haven't tried yet, just been screwing around doing other stuff, it's nice we're getting free new content as well as what sounds like really packed DLC expansions.

I did some reading in the Nioh reddit (I was at work and bored), and apparently Sloth Talismans break the game and make _____ Crusher very trivial, slap some Carnage Talismans on there and you got nothin' to worry about

I am pretyt excite about the DLCs though, hope they're good

Sloth has been OP since the alpha, I don't understand why everyone whines about nerfing it when it's pretty clearly working as intended, no one is abusing it by just using its literal function, unlike how extraction talismans made living weapon indefinite, that was abusing an oversight and got patched out.

Then I guess Sloth is if you wanna go full baby mode and dont wanna get co-op, works for me
Hopefully they'll be disabled in PVP or else PVP is gonna get stale quickly

Update: so killing Umibozu with the Hiyotoko Mask is insanely fun, I think I'll go help in that mission every so often to help players kill the boss when I get more than 11 of the things, I get lore for the Umibozu and the player gets to continue playing the game past what is considered a roadblock, win win!

Big ass balance patch just rolled out, added new missions and gear too.

Most interesting thing of note for balance, other than murdering farming builds and trying to make Suzaku not a broken piece of shit, is making offensive spells actually do damage.

So the first DLC came out, I've heard good things, haven't gotten back in since Persona 5 and Prey have eaten what spare time I've been able to find. However they completely changed the stats and level stuff, there is a level cap now so there are actually builds now, ninjutsu and magic have a lot more to do, PVP was added, a whole new harder difficulty mode and a bunch of stuff I'm probably forgetting. It's neat to know they're actually putting a lot of effort into the free side of things, let alone the new areas. First DLC weapon was an Odachi, which I personally am not too excited about but I haven't given it a try, so who knows.

Alright, last post in the thread I'm going to make if it stays dead.

Having now played through all the DLC and the game again with all the content changes I have to say they did a fantastic job supporting this game, the new weapons are both a lot of fun, the new bosses are pretty good to great as are the levels. They made a lot of quality of life changes over the original release including the option to not pick up items under a certain rarity, adding new "currency" that lets you force better rerolls on equipment bonuses which is really nice and there is even a new item that you can store XP in so if I wanted to delevel for a certain build or to play with people who just started the game I could safely store that without ever having to worry about losing it. I haven't tried out PVP still, probably never will, so I can't comment on that.

But a word to anyone who wants to play for the first time on PC, the DLC was released months after the game initially released and was very clearly intended for the people who were still playing the game at the time, meaning after you complete the epilogue for the main game the difficulty jumps drastically if you just jump into the DLC instead of NG+ first, while I understand (and even would have appreciated this, being one of the people who was still playing around when the DLC dropped and had a crazy powerful build) why this is a thing it's still going to be rough for a lot of first time players. Also, in terms of the port, the game runs surprisingly well, I'm getting 60fps almost completely consistently on a(n albiet good) laptop at medium settings, though honestly some of the settings leave a bit to be desired like the complete lack of even an anti-aliasing option.

But yeah, game is better than ever, really happy I supported it, the DLC even has a sequel hook so I definitely hope that actually happens.

My only complaint is that the final DLC has a post game mission where you fight Jin Hayabusa who drops a special armor set that you can guess the look of from his name, the Dragon Sword, a very blatantly NG styled Kusarigama, The Art of the Inferno Ninpo magic and the skill Izuna Drop. While the fight with him and everything he drops is awesome, I have two problems with it. First being that the smithing text for the Dragon Sword isn't a drop, he drops the sword, but the text is a reward for beating the game on NG++++ which means it's basically the last thing you can actually do anyway, that sucks. Secondly playing with a build around that has made me really want to play some Ninja Gaiden, which has led me to look at that series and its availability which I'll put in a spoiler bracket so this post isn't visually much longer and because it's somewhat unrelated.
For anyone unfamiliar the modern Ninja Gaiden games pretty much started on the original Xbox, Ninja Gaiden was released in 2004, a massively improved rerelease was put out in 2005 also for the original Xbox and has remained exclusive to that to this day, which is honestly pretty indicative of how this story goes.

Ninja Gaiden Black, largely considered by the Ninja Gaiden community as the best game in the series (or even the only one worth playing, depending on who you ask), is only available physically on Xbox and then digitally as well as playable through backwards compatibility on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. There was another rerelease of Ninja Gaiden called Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3, this game is usually considered inferior as it removed some content, made the game quite a bit easier and the new gameplay content was lackluster at best which really hurt since it was forced on you. Friendly reminder that original Xbox remains unemulatable, as does 360 as far as I'm aware and while PS3 is technically emulatable it requires quite a machine and none of the Ninja Gaiden games are particularly playable on it at best.

Ninja Gaiden 2 released for the 360 is really a mixed bag of a sequel, it has my favorite weapon additions of the series and some great bosses and levels but also has a lot of problems going on (like the fucking water combat and that stupid god damn boss as well as the game honestly being flat out unfair in design terms in the name of difficulty), and while it's rejected by NGB purists it also gets to be "the last game in the series worth playing" by most of the Ninja Gaiden community. It also had a PS3 rerelease as Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 which is much easier, censored to a laughable degree, has absolutely awful new bosses, removes the fucking water combat and offers some new content in the form of new playable characters. I want to talk about for a second how fucking baffling this port is though, even ignoring the censorship, because in a high paced action game they decided to focus on visuals over actual performance, raising the resolution of the game and making it look much better while removing anything that would lower the framerate such as effects or much more harmful to the game; enemies. They removed all the game's large scale encounters instead of fighting hordes of enemies you now fight a few more damaging/damage sponge enemies which alters the games balance quite a bit as well as changes the experience.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was a clusterfuck no one wants to talk about, remembering that game exists now I really want to go read about why they even did what they did. Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge was a rerelease of the game for the Wii-U (for some reason) where they actually made it a Ninja Gaiden game again, though the game is still not well received by most Ninja Gaiden fans. It was later ported to PS3 and 360. (My personal opinion on the game is barely existent, I had a miserable time plaything through the half I did play but I aim to give it another shot)

Long story short
Ninja Gaiden - The most liked one
  • Best version: Black, only playable on Xbox consoles through backwards comparability or your original Xbox copy
  • Lesser version: Sigma, on Playstation 3
  • I forgot these existed and had to come back to add these version: Sigma Plus, released on the Vita PS3 version with small additions and a 30fps cap that it struggles to meet at times
  • Not emulatable in any form

Ninja Gaiden 2 - The follow up that is debatable in quality (I personally like it more than Black other than some standout issues)
  • Best version: Original, only playable on Xbox 360. Is not playable on Xbox One.
  • Fuck off version: Sigma 2, available on PS3
  • Seriously fuck off, holy shit version: Vita, has everything wrong with the PS3 version (except they added gore back) but with the added bonus of a 30fps cap that you'll almost never see since the game is barely able to maintain double digit FPS
  • Not emulatable in any form, not available on anything other than the systems it was directly released on (360, PS3, Vita)

Ninja Gaiden 3 - Eugh.
  • Best version: Razor's Edge, Wii-U/PS3/360
  • What the fuck happened version: Original, PS3/360
  • Not emulatable in any form
Now, why is this important? Simple; access to a great series of games is extremely limited and completely finite. All of these games, regardless of release quality are only available on systems a gen old or on the Vita (which I don't think I need to explain the issue with, and I love my Vita) with the sole exception of one (albeit what is probably considered the best one by the people who care about the series, which is only available on the Xbox One). I don't buy into console war shit, which includes the "PC master race" thing, but this is a big part of why releasing games on PC is important. I have a 360, it's at least my second one because that system dies at an absurdly high rate (Red Ring anyone?) for a game console. I also have a PS3 which is also not my first one because they also have a decent death rate. Sure, 360s and PS3s are cheap right now but manufacture of them will stop and they only last so many years. While I replaced both those consoles at the time they were relevant, I certainly can't justify the price of replacing them now if they were to die, especially for the 360 which doesn't have a whole lot of exclusives in its library to justify such a purchase, not to mention the expenses of replacing peripherals or the fact that there is a subscription fee to access some game features.

This is true for many games and game series at this point, but since we're talking about Ninja Gaiden it boils down to this, the only way to actually play the series is on an Xbox 360 and even then it may be up to personal preference if you're getting the best version of NG 2. What started out as me lazily going "I want to play NG but I don't want to go set up X console" became a reminder of what utter bullshit the whole exclusives system is and the fact that many of the best games of last gen and certainly anything exclusive to the original Xbox is capable of actually being lost. Sure, Xbox One started rolling out Xbox backwards compatibility but hey Jet Set Radio Future isn't there, Phantom Crash isn't there, Otogi and Otogi 2 weren't playable on 360 and aren't on Xbox One, I'm sure you can come up with many other examples of actually good games that aren't coming back if you actually owned an Xbox. I'm still completely shocked we were so lucky to see Phantom Dust actually get a remaster for Xbox One and PC, and it was actually free for some reason.

And yes, I understand why games that are made by the console manufacturer are exclusive and that that isn't likely to change for the most part, but what is surprising is that exclusives as an idea has changed to a large degree this gen with Microsoft who are releasing almost all Xbox One exclusives on Windows (though some unfortunately locked to their garbage store) and even Sony to a degree who are much more open to the idea of third party exclusives ending up on PC than before (Nioh, Street Fighter, Helldivers, SG2E content, etc.). The main holdout on the issue is obviously Nintendo, who is honestly much less harmful in this context since for the most part they either don't have third party exclusives, the ones they do are more likely to actually be made in a way that uses the system its on in a way that may be hard to translate (The World Ends With You, Etrian Odyssey, The Wonderful 101 to a small degree, etc.) or honestly offer some sort of reason to buy their hardware since they do something other than just being a worse computer (Dual screens, Handlheld/console hybrid, etc.) and while I could then bitch about availability of some things they do get to hold hostage like Fatal Frame (Hey, the best version of Fatal Frame 2 is Xbox exclusive and backwards compatible to 360 but not One), that's an entirely different discussion.
