I'm new to this game and fighting games in general and I have a question.

What do I do when some sticks me in a corner with a combo? I keep getting matches where other players take away all my health before I can do anything.

Is everyone online a veteran? I win like 1 game out of every 30. There isn't anything I can do during games but watch as the opponent kills me before I can react. So am I the only beginner online or do I just suck that bad?

1) Tutorial mode before anything else. Really work at it, it's great for beginners.

2) Don't focus on the combos, this is a mistake EVERY new player makes, then blame it for their losses. "What do I do when some sticks me in a corner with a combo"; the bold portion is more important than the combo itself. Also, with the way undizzy works it's not possible to be put into "super long" combos, develop an understanding of how that system works and play with it. Understanding how to defend against resets is what you need to grasp.

3) Don't play quick match at all is my advice. You'll get matched up with better players and get stomped down hard. Make beginner lobbies or join them, play with other beginners and steadily improve.

Basically, tutorial mode and beginner lobbies, where you try to apply what you learned in tutorial to the matches. That's the way to become good enough to handle situations that you're having problems with.

Try spending a few minutes in training mode to better understand the character you are using. Knowing what every attack does and when to use them is essential to playing the game. If you have any trouble with a combo there are plenty of combo threads to look at so you can practice those but uh I guess learning core mechanics is probably the better idea. More importantly, since defense is also a problem try practicing pushblocking and guarding and such by recording a block string of sorts. (You can do that in training mode but tutorial also has a guarding section but if you don't feel too good about your defense you can just practice it in training mode.)

There are also lots of mechanics in skullgirls to read about so please look around the forum to get some sort of understanding of the game.

And finally, good luck and please enjoy the game!

1. Finished all the tutorials but two

2. Could you explain or give me a link that would be helpful? Resets are when they can use an attack again without triggering infinite protection thing right? Sometimes my character pushes them back but they start a new combo before I can react.

3. I can never find any lobbies, like at all. None appear. Is there some sort of settings or stuff I need to make them show up? When I try making them no one show up

Don't play Endless Beta, for whatever reason there are never lobbies there. Play normal Skull Girls, there are always lobbies open on that.

When you find those lobbies, try applying what you learn in tutorial mode. Go back to a lesson if you think there's something you're not understanding.

http://skullgirls.com/forums/index.php?threads/beginner-resources-thread.242/ is good for an explanation of many of the core mechanics. I suggest getting comfortable with your characters for a bit, then looking at the character forums. No point in trying to run before you can crawl, as they say.

So if don't get the first block, your screwed?

Also not playing in the beta, I'm on the PC and can only ever find about 1 lobby and it almost always has 1 player who is afk :/

Not understanding, I'm looking at the lobbies right now and see about 9 (!) open. "Skullgirls" is what you need to select in your play list, not the one with "Endless Beta".

Check the defense guide here for more information on blocking, resets, etc. That explains well enough.

The AFK player I'm assuming is NYGamer. They just stream stuff.

I only played in training mode the first few days I got this game. I do well on cpu difficulties up to normal but when playing against any other player I get trashed. So should I just go back to playing bots? I've read that defense guide like a million times now but I still suck :(

Don't bother with bots, you're best bet is playing other new players imo. Beginner lobbies man, make one if you can't find any. A title like "Casual Matches - Beginner" should get you the players you want (unless intermediates and experts are being asses).

bots are only good for getting use to the feelings of combos they really wont help you with advanced tactics

Well, I guess I'll try and find a lobby. Do they always take a long time before you get to fight? The few that I've got into having me waiting around for a while

Combos scale on this game as well, right? In which case, it's very likely that you're getting resets which has a very small window that you'll think that the combo was never dropped at all. With the infinite prevention it will be almost impossible to kill someone in a single combo.

Thanks everybody for the help. I think I'm doing a bit better. Still suck, but I'm going to keep working at it!

Number 2 right here shows you have fallen into the prime golden beginner trap number 1A.

You are thinking about the game and probably fighting games in general with a distorted view already, you need to stop thinking about the game as a combo trade off.

Let me try and break down the situation so I can try to explain.

The game begins , there is an opening gambit, each side picks a move, you can decide to do nothing and react but generally, especially in random games with strangers, both sides will either pick an instant offensive move or retreat into a defensive position, giving up space towards their corner but perhaps being in a good position to gain advantage after the opponents opening offense fails

Ok, so someone lands a hit right? This part is actually the most important, it isn't the combo, its the fact that someone managed to press their advantage or took a risk to actually attain the hit. This is where the game happened, from here, the combo itself is simply recognising the hit has landed, confirming into damage and ending in an advantageous situation.

Often times, this situation in Skullgirls will be a reset. Now understand, the opponent is GIVING UP guaranteed damage here, they are not just doing an attack that resets their combo for them, they are intentionally dropping their combo either hoping to catch you by surprise with you defense down, or to put you into a mixup situation they feel is stacked in their favour. Of course if it succeeds you are going to be eating a lot more damage, because they have actually just had the opportunity to perform 2 combos on you, not 1 as your post sort of seemed to imply. You were opened up twice, you had 2 opportunities to defend and get out of your disadvantaged situation here.

Of course as a beginner you are really going to struggle to see resets coming, Skullgirls has a very free system that pretty much allows you to drop a combo into a good mixup at any point. You will learn these things with time and experience. As a beginner you should be really taking the tutorial to heart, play games whether against players much better than you or not. Just make sure you are working on something in your games. Make a conscious decision to improve at something, even if its only one small factor of your play.

Combos you can learn in your own time grinding out in training mode, you need to get in game time to learn how to actually open people up confirm your hits.

Basically, try to recognise when you have advantage and when you don't. If you have any more specific questions don't be afraid to ask on this forum, people are glad to help, we always want more players.

The entire goal of the game is to not let your opponent play.
Hit them and win off that single hit through resets/pressure+mixups, into incoming mixup into more pressure etc.
