scrubbyscum999's trials and tribulations

I guess I am also scared about what Stormblessed said, muscle memory.

Okay man, don't worry. I'm here to help. If you want to use a keyboard for Skullgirls, I can tell you the PROFESSIONAL KEYBOARD LAYOUT that I use full time, since I play Keyboard, and I think I'm getting pretty good. The way I've got it set up will help not break your muscle memory by setting the keys up to be similar to the fightstick just with different feeling buttons: Take a look at my beautiful 267 hour Diagram using the expensive Microsoft Paint Deluxe Studios: Pro Edition

Breaks are for nerds, it's time to adapt and get so god damn good tm.
Let me know if you have any questions

What if you don't have a number pad on your laptop? If there an optimal setup for that?

Try and find the most vertical lined up keys closest to enter. M<> and JKL are pretty lined up, I'm sure you have a spare keyboard kicking around somewhere in the house though no?

Alternatively you can use a hitbox layout on keyboard, its really strange at first but I found it pretty comfortable after a while. I would sometimes practice at uni without my stick and it worked pretty well, once I had the feel for jumping and getting multi button things like throw, dash and assist down, it was all ok.

Play on pad. You wont really practice execution, but you can practice every other aspect of the game.

I'm in a dorm. I am far away from home.

Can't spend money on fun things like that in college. Barely got away with it the first time.

I am actually kind of busy with school now, so when I start trying the keyboard it will be a little at a time. Plus, I still have a phobia of keyboard play messing with stick play. I won't be able to do supers, flight, anything requiring a quarter turn or dragon punch motion but I could still practice moving around and stuff. Might as well take this time to at least start getting used to Double.

First, getting to intermediate lobbies. Then, THE WORLDS.

Everyone here pretty much already covered most of what I wanted to say. The only thing I feel was missed is that if you end up taking a break, you can spend this time looking at footage of other players and analyzing their matches to get ideas about how to improve your own play. Or to be a bit more accurate, taking this time to get a more solid understanding of the overall flow of the game and the things your character is capable of as well as others is definitely a great way to continue improving even if you can't play yourself.

Thanks, already been spending some of my time looking at videos of some of my more favorite players style wise. I spent all my summer watching various matches on youtube and stuff before I even had the game so I guess I should just see it like that.

I did try the keyboard this week and, wow. I don't know if this will work, I might just take the time looking at SG videos. Mad props to Skarmand to be able to play keyboard. I can also confirm you can't press more than 2 buttons at a time for mine or it won't read. It's kind of frustrating cause I played 2 players who I honestly feel I could've beaten with my normal eightarc, which is rare since I am still a scrub. Well, I will try and maybe post videos here for now every few days to show what I'm looking at.

Whatever you do don't study that first match of Skarmand vs Duck :P
God damn I hate Peacock so much.

Sorry man, if ever want to go from level 1 scrub to level 2 scrub I need to learn. Don't be hatin on your own character though, she could probably beat my ass.

I got lazy and forgot to post here but I am still studying. I'll try to post what I am looking at more often rather than forgetting.

You should post what you're learning from these videos.

Ok, will do. Later tonight I will try and do analysis of the Domo vs. ThatOtherDude match. I am terrible at articulating, so please feel to criticize as much as you like.

EDIT: Well, this one I did pretty fast since I started to watch it again. This is the first match. I need to do some homework so maybe more of my scrubtastic analysis will come tonight.

Domo vs. ThatOtherDude Game 1

0:25 Well, this was a nice crossup by Double but I couldn’t help but wonder why he backed up so much at the start. I know Double you shouldn’t just rushdown, but wouldn’t keeping a closer distance be a little more useful? You had to go in for a cross up anyway.

0:50 The updo by ThatOtherdude seems a little reckless when I keep watching it. Yes, you can punish but Domo saw it before. Domo was in the middle of Double cross thing, it just seemed better if he would have waded it out, maybe pushblock, and regain space.

1:08 Just wanted to say that was a nice use of DHC by Domo. I guess it’s important to remember it’s ok to spend all your bar when you catch to chars. It probably would’ve been safer to Snapback but I guess higher risk higher reward. At that point it’s all about execution, most of the time when I see an assist getting away in a situation like this it’s because of an execution error.

1:15 Poor decision to do updo by Domo. When he saw his assist getting hit I feel he should’ve waited a bit longer and either bait an assist call or wait for maybe a launcher. Now I know it’s due to my scrubbiness, but when that happens to me I wait (usually too long) until I know I can interrupt. Yes, one of chars is getting fucked up but getting another one in there isn’t really better and both might get caught in the combo.

1:18 Don’t know why he(Theotherdude) would attempt to reset. He got two chars in a combo that could result in an evening of the matchup.

1:24 Why call Cerecopter when Domo is so far away (and has hornet bomber still)?

1:30 Well, Domo should’ve waited for the assist before jumping. If Filia tried to start trip him up he could keep in the air and pushblock. After that maybe call Double?

1:52 From my experience car blockbuster is the most punishable thing ever. I don’t know if you can combo off bomber though I don’t know what other options he had.

2:00 Why finish with Gregor? He has the meter for a Diamond blockbuster but, I don’t know I feel he should of saved it.

2:11 Ugh, as a PW I feel you shouldn’t be in the air like that randomly. You know Bella can just Excellbella. Now I still need to implement this in my game and I can’t try it since I don’t have my stick but I think if you throw nails you force Bella to block allowing you to get closer. After that from my experience once you get near somebody even if the start blocking you as long as you keep pressure and maybe armor for an assist you should be good.

What did I learn: Well, I guess first staying too far away from your opponent in the beginning of the match (unless your Peacock, or maybe Parasoul) doesn’t really get you anywhere. Calling assist under pressure shouldn’t be your first resort and preferably against certain chars you should just wade it out. Try to be wary of your opponent calling assist randomly and maybe go baiting whenever you trying to hit when they have that option and there has been significant down time. Resets don’t work when you are already hitting two chars. Sometimes it’s better to be confident in your blocking, even against Filia. Try not use a punishable blockbuster when you don’t have the upper hand unless the opponent is heading in toward you. Be confident enough in execution enough to not try to spend meter when not necessary. I already believe this, but flying around Bella is never a good idea.

God, I sound like an asshole. It’s easy to say stuff after analyzing, not to mention I’m pretty sure 90% of the stuff I said was either gibberish or straight up wrong. Please correct me on anything I said that was scrub talk. If it was everything I said, well if you don’t want to waste time pick the worst offenses.

0:25 Neutral game is extremely important in this game, it's not all about rushdown sometimes. Since it's a long set players like to feel each other out, not go to hard, and analyze how the other person plays in the first few matches. Val backed with Updo AND Cerecopter is incredibly dangerous to approach from the start, especially as Double.

1:52 Hornet Bomber is only super-cancellable.

2:00 He finished with Gregor to guarantee the kill and because he was too high when he did his hairball. If he would have airdash-cancelled the hairball at that height stuff becomes extremely weird because you won't be able to get a restand.

2:11 It's always possible to make Bella come to you, as well. it's hard to approach anyone with updo as an assist, especially as Painwheel if you don't want to fly.

Just as a general thing, remember that analyzing matches is one thing and playing is another. When you ask yourself "why did he do that", remember that maybe it was his best option and it got counted anyway. That's is what is called a good read or good reaction, which happens a ton in fighting games.
Like when you said Val should wait to see Cerecopter before jumping, what if the assist never comes? You have to make high risk/high reward decisions sometimes in SG and hope that your opponent does not read you, especially in high level play. I do agree that Painwheel at the end could have been more patient and thrown some projectiles and made Bella come to him, but he probably had some sort of plan but got caught by a normal and Updo.

I might have a chance to post another written observation tomorrow. I've been real busy with homework so I haven't been able to frequent here much, let alone writing another critique. I was going to probably write about one of the matches between dekillsage vs sonicfox.

On an unrelated note is it me or are more people writing training journals now?

I have been really busy with schoolwork, which is why I haven't been able to do another write up recently. I have recently made a new Steam group called New Meridan Bourgeoisie that consists of people I play with Skullgirls a lot that are around my level. It's now a month or so before I get my stick back but I still want to be able to try and stay connected. There is some people who I would like to play when I get back so I can learn some things outside of the group.

Ok, I think I just failed a class so it's UNLIKELY I will get my stick back til JUNE when school ends. Yeah, my life.

You gotta break in and steal it, then replace it with a cardboard version. They'll never know.

Tell them "see this is what happens when I can't play SG"
