Report 5/1 Salty - Taunt Madness, Robo-Fortune Completed

Why? Out of curiousity.
Twitter:
So taunts for the other characters do nothing? That is midly dissapointing. I have no reason to use them LOL #Skullgirls

Like if they did something, then I would see a reason. But they do nothing and are stupid complicated motions. Not wasting my time.

First letdown from lab zero in 3 years for me. Sorry guys :/ @LabZeroGames

I don't even care about the rest of the updates. Im so upset.

My night is ruined :/
I guess some people are really upset they don't have effects and mess with meta and balance again.
Being taunted by taunts or something.

Funny, i usually like to taunt against the cpu only, because is the only thing i can win, and i don't like to piss real people, but i love taunt animations. =P

Does Fortune not have a voice clip attached to her taunt? I'm fairly sure she already has a pre-existing clip that sounds like a yawn that could be applied.

I appreciate each character having a taunt, whilst there may be no benefits of doing so I've always enjoyed the existence of them. All of the taunts look great, my favourite however is Valentine's.

I like how Filia's taunt was sassy, Squigly's was adorable, and Painwheel's is just so funny with that smile.

From the patch notes:
- Added TAUNTS FOR EVERYONE WHO DIDN'T HAVE ONE! Check the command list for their individual motions. They're not quite finished, some do not have sound, etc, but they exist! All new in-game art for SG is now complete.

quit crying, it was bound to happen eventually. Just keep the flame of Skull Girls burning bright and we can all move this game to a brighter tomorrow.
Indeed...
We all need....
To shine on.....
To see...

[resist urge to break out into song]

I love these, even if they don't do anything. Parasoul's is by far my favorite but it sucks because i don't play her.

Painey's is my second favorite and i DO play her, even if it's OOC. I guess she just had a brief surge of moe through the mind control.

Eating chocolate should give you red health... :b

I am mildly incensed by this, thanks. Do people not know how many taunts in 3s just reduce your STUN?
Lemme add these to my "Read this if I ever get the urge to make another fighting game" doc.

My problem with the taunts is my problem with any taunt. Any move meant simply to piss someone off seems in poor sportsmanship at best and alienating at worst. When a taunt has an effect it's part of a game plan and, in general, I find people of all skill levels don't care. They treat it like any other move. When a taunt has no effect it's only purpose is to make someone else feel bad. Idk... I guess I don't like anything made for the sole purpose of making people feel bad. That just seems.... Wrong to me.

As I said though I accept that this is an unpopular stance.

oh boohoo they put in extra little animations that are fun to use :C

no one gets mad at luigi having a taunt that spikes the edge in smash, yet other taunts dont do anything...?

Remember back when fighting games had taunts, and the only reason they did so was because they were a taunt
Pepperidge Farms remembers

Seriously tho, if I have to sacrifice no buff effects for the new taunts in order to have taunts for everyone and not have who didn't have one arbitrarily get left out because "yes", then bring on the no-buff-giving taunts

But...there were already taunts for everyone after Squigly...?.

Yeah, but those already had an effect. I hardly considered those as a taunt. "Oh but you can tbag, use squigs c.LP as a taunt, etc, etc". That's true, but the idea of something being implemented just to mock people is terrible to me. Comparing the number of people who taunt in games that have this feature (like smash bros or SF4) with people that teabags in SG you can see that the latter is much, much smaller. Adding the option to taunt kinda motivates people to act like a jerk. Maybe some of them aren't really being stupid. I understand that some of them only want to celebrate a victory/comeback with a taunt. But how could I know? I'm hot blooded as fuck when it comes to video games and taunts kinda makes me upset. I guess it can't be helped.

Sorry for this long post, I know you are a busy person. I'm not asking for the taunts to be removed, or hava an actual effect or anything. They are really good animations, lab zero's staff did an amazing job again. Unfortunately most people support the idea of having taunts, so I have no other choice than adapt.

Honestly, whenever I would taunt, I never mean is as a "I'm better than you" sort of motion, I always do it for the animation in any game that has taunts in it. It gives me something to do in between KO and round end. It's like doing a super even though they're dead.

One day a guy asked me, "AY YO WHEN'S SKULLGIRLS COMING OUT?!" and I said, "FUCK YOU BITCH LAUNCH PARTY ERRYDAY!!!

But now the never ending launch party is ending.
*Sigh* kinda sad really

But hey, it's been one hell of a launch party, and the Skullgirls hype train is gonna ride for a long time.

The be fair, Squigly's taunt is probably one of the easier of them all, it's just a Raging Demon.

Oh yeah, Squigly has a Raging Demon now.
Yes!

Caring Demon
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

....I guess I'm one of the few people who also uses taunts for mind games against certain people. I mean if you're playing someone who plays worse when they're frustrated, then why not? A viable strategy is still viable regardless of how it's accepted.
I mean, really. We can beat each other to death with flames, lasers, shuriken, giant hair balls, a giant metal man's butt, and instruments(of doom), but saying nyana-nyana-boo-boo (:PUN:) is going too far?

But now the never ending launch party is ending.
*Sigh* kinda sad really
It ain't ending just yet, this is just the start of the launch party!

Guys, why are you saying that launch party is going for only three years? It actually started loooooooooooong before official release. That kinda was the whole idea - to start partying before it, because release was constantly getting postponed.

That's you, though. So you're just saying you have some interpretation of a thing that isn't the interpretation other people have?

What prevents you from adopting the mindset that they're nice anyway, even if they taunt?
I mean, people already DO things that are taunting, like Deflector. If you can view that as okay, what's the difference?
People are still jerks the same amount. Just cuz you can't tell doesn't make them not jerks.

taunts for mind games

Personally, I've always felt that taunts that don't do anything gameplay-related have an inherent meta effect on the match, so in my mind, no taunt has no effect. If you feel incensed because someone did a taunt against you in a match, and that makes you feel bad, then it had the intended effect.

What about situations when one player is in the middle of a sick comeback!? If Nekro kicks the crap out of me for most of the match, and I mount a comeback and I get a hard knockdown and just a couple more hits will probably kill, HELL YEAH I'm gonna taunt. It says "yeah, son, you thought you had it on lock and now I'm stealing it from you. You know you wanna reversal DP when you get up because I just taunted, DON'T YOU!?!?!?!"

I'll confess to getting really angry when someone's taunted me, but once I cool down I can step back, have a laugh, and remember that it's a psychological tactic. That's okay by me.

Also, I just want to say that while I love our community, sometimes they don't know how good they have it. Seeing people whine about taunts not having gameplay effects makes me really sad, when I how much work goes into making new content for this game.

ALSO also, 99% of fighting games in which there are taunts, they don't do anything. The alternative was NOT having them at all. Maybe some of you would've preferred that, but there were already taunts in the game, and you didn't have a problem with those, so I don't really understand the problem with the new ones.

EDIT: LOL that I used Nekro as an example

Just do what I do and assume everyone who beats you is laughing at you behind their TV, and are most likely gonna send rub salt on the wound mail detailing how you suck at the game and should playing it forever.

Keeps you humble.

That's why taunts are better. They save time. Why spend extra time not playing to post a "you got pwnd" style message when you can just taunt mid match XD
This is coming from someone who is terrible at this game.

Yeah, taunts should absolutely have no gameplay effect over most of the cast.

Having it do nothing means it's technically a pointless action. And if an opponent uses it they're saying it takes priority over YOU. It's the best.

Consider them rallies and encouragements instead.

These complaints are kinda late seeing as, Peacock has a taunt that says "Why you bad at video games?"
.. I like the fact that they use weird motions, Because people can't just taunt any time they want.

If you play marvel 3 online, it's taunt-fest, every single match you lose you'll get post-KO taunted, Some people taunt after every freakin combo. because it's just 1 button. So the weird inputs will make them less spammed.

Oh my god Mike, all of L0, when you guys "move on" to whatever you're moving on to (which im curious as to what) can you please just develop the thing completely in private where nobody outside of the team knows about anything and it's all top secret until the game is released so that no one can nitpick, complain, make you tear your hair out or try to mess with your guys's creative decisions EVER AGAIN?

It would make EVERYONE happier. Sometimes transparency can be a terrible thing when abused.

Except for Painwheel's...
It just means she's more concerned about others than herself.

I like the new taunts.

It says "yeah, son, you thought you had it on lock and now I'm stealing it from you. You know you wanna reversal DP when you get up because I just taunted, DON'T YOU!?!?!?!"

When I played SFIV I often taunted fireball characters from half a screen away after a knock down. 90% of the time they answered with an Ex-Fireball. Meter wasting FTW. :D

GAHHH Squigly's taunt is so cute! Plus, I love Painwheel's shit-eating grin and Robo-Fortune's voice sounds really good, I like it. I know there's going to be a period of time where we will no longer look foward to new updates for SG, but it's always such a pleasure seeing whatever new things you guys add to the game. Love you, Lab Zero.

People are still jerks the same amount. Just cuz you can't tell doesn't make them not jerks.

That's true, but it's all about quality of experience isn't it? The person who can't tell is having a better time than the person who can tell. If you hate jerks but can't tell when someone is a jerk to you, then you perceive no jerks and are still happy. Meanwhile the people who are being jerks are also happy because they do they are free to do their jerky thing.

And the same reason you can't force people to not be jerks is the same reason you can't force people to assume people aren't jerks. Jerks will always exist. People who are hurt by jerks will always exist. You can't get rid of one or the other but you can do your best so that the maximum amount of people have fun.

I actually felt skullgirls did a fantastic job of that. Taunts with effects are like the most brilliant solution to give both sides what they want. They give the jerky side a tool to make fun of people with and salty side a way to rationalize away the hurt. It was perfect.

But now taunts without an effect serve no purpose. It's obvious you are being made fun of. Only one side is happy about that.

It's also worth noting that taunts with an effect tend to be used as moves more often than not because of this. People tend to look for points to use big bands taunt to power up, not to make you feel bad, and if you do encounter a player who is using it to make you feel bad, you have already seen it so much in so many other battles thst it's hard to take it as such. Once again skullgirls managed to condition people into not being salty about taunts. It was brilliant. Really innovative I would say. It fixes so many things by doing so little.

Don't get me wrong. I totally get that you don't have time or stamina or life resources left to make the taunts do things, no matter how much I and others want it. I'm not arguing to make that happen. It's just sad that, at least what I considered to be the most well thought out and innovative approach to taunts in fighting games is now being pushed aside for the same old "here's a move to make your opponent salty" method that a good portion of the fighting game community and especially fighting game newbies tend to hate.

That's where I'm coming from. You can't make people be nice or make people have thick skin but you can provide a toolset that creates maximum happiness for the maximum amount of people even with these conditions. I think skullgirls without taunts with no effect did just that.

I like the new taunts. Painwheel's, in particular, is adorable !

I can see how people can think it's rude to taunt/make fun of your opponent with them, but I think they should keep in mind that people can have a lot of different reasons why they would want to use them. I sometimes do a Devil Horns or a Reflector when I win a match as Cerebella, but I mainly do that because it looks cool, not to belittle my opponent.

Maybe people just want to press buttons, or show off, or see their character's cool looking animation, or they have found that the timing of the taunt allow them to reliably time a meaty or a safejump after a knockdown, or they want to taunt you in a friendly way because they don't view that as something rude/offensive. Give them the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, Chicken, is a fucking video game. But some people take it more seriously than others.

And why people are saying that Squigs taunt is a reference to Akuma's raging demon?

That's your problem, not the game's. Not everything has to be made a certain way just to accommodate you.

I know. I never asked to change anything. I was just clarifying why I don't like them. And I'm not the only one who thinks that way. Calm down, please.
