Anime/Manga General Discussion

Well, those two are classics, so not everything is quite as good ;)

I'll try to suggest fairly recent anime that has been good:
Shinsekai Yori ("from the new world", starts somewhat slow, but great story.)
Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan? - silly translation)
Bakemonogatari / Nisemonogatari / Nekomonogatari / Monogatari 2 (great series by nisio isin, very punny humor.)
Ghost in the Shell: Arise (the older GitS movies / series are really good too, but this is recent OVA)

Two lighter animes that I liked this season:
Blood Lad
Danganronpa

I suppose I'll throw in a older less known wildcard: Seikai no Senki. Really awesome scifi anime.
Wait, you count Dangan Ronpa as a "lighter anime"? that MURDER mystery series?

I suppose I have a dark sense of humor. The anime has a light tone in my opinion, doesn't treat itself so seriously. But there is murder and blood, yeah. ;)

I suppose I'd say that its light in the same sense Ms. Fortune is light. If you think about, its gruesome, but its treated in comedy / cartoonish fashion, so it ends up on the funny side.

You want good shit?

- Sword of the Stranger. I second this. Beautiful fight scenes, animated by the guy who did Cowboy Bebop's fight scenes.
- Katanagatari. Dialogue-heavy and 50 min. episodes but other than that, good story and characterization.
- Penguindrum. Surreal dramedy/thriller. Really beautiful art direction, loveable characters, mindfuck story. Does get quite into melodrama, but if you don't mind that, it's really good.
- Revolutionary Girl Utena. By the same guy who directed Penguindrum. Surreal drama/thriller (has some funny moments, but not as much as Penguindrum), has one of the best heroine ever, loves to deconstruct fairy tale and shoujo tropes.
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, both season. Good story, really good music, quite dialogue-heavy and has sparse action scenes but when things get hype, it's really cool, doesn't have much character development though (2nd season has its moments).
- Giant Robo. A mix of somewhat mismatched genres (super robot with kung-fu movies tropes) but it works surprisingly well. The 1st ep might be a convoluted infodump, but things get clearer by the 2nd ep. Really good story.
- Gurren Lagann. Epicness: The Anime shoulda been the nickname of this series. Beautiful hand-drawn animation, great characterization, hot-blooded action scenes.

Is it weird that I want to see this anime just because of how cute this character is? That fucking bottom image omfg...

It is not weird at all. That's like the only reason I started watching it.

I got bored though, I haven't watched it in over a week. I'll pick it up again when I feel like it.

Well I just read like a sentence long plot summary and now I'm definitely watching this.

Also the above.

Well, her new suit looks even worse animated than I expected.

There is no trace of Gurren Lagann in this whatsoever. Oh, wait.....

So I've watched 4 episodes and....
Wow, this is disturbingly accurate. There are lots of things Tomoko does that I've done before. The feeling when you see classmates you don't know in public and don't want them to see you....the thoughts that they must be talking about you...the dreading of potential pair work, knowing you'll be the odd one out...the hate of gym class, cause you can never group up with anyone...the awkwardness of needing to share a textbook with someone of the opposite gender...the hateful thoughts about other people...this anime pretty much gets everything about loners right, and manages to make it funny. I love it.

Im the only one here hyped as fuck for the new ufotable Fate Stay Night anime directed by Nasu?

Please, be Heaven's Feel, even if the adaptations of Fate and Unlimited Blade Works were far from good I prefer a H?eaven's Feel anime than a remake.

Wait what
WHAT IS THIS ABOUT A FATE ANIME AND WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME

Wow, there was actually someone who survived the shitstorm without even knowing?

There are a lot of rumors, but the logical step will be Heaven's Feel since it has more clear connections to Zero.

It's going to be a good year for Type Moon/Nasuverse fans, a new Ufotable adaptation + Tsukihime Remake + Mahou Tsukai No Yoru.

I can't wait to have more worms and educated prostitutes.

I wish I could be as hyped as you guys are, but I don't know anything about these Fates, Type-Moons, and Nasuverse things.

I will say that Kill La Kill looks awesome, mostly because that art style and animation. Also, it doesn't look like it's afraid to be itself, you know what I'm saying?

Preview of the 2nd OVA series episode of Code Geass: Akito the Exiled.

The official website updated as well.

Seeing Spinzaku Suzaku again isn't much of a surprise since he was spotted in the preview at the end of the 1st episode and he could have done anything between the two anime seasons. He should still be a member of the Britannia Knight of the Round at this point.

The real surprise is...

Meet Lelouch Julius the Britannia strategist. He looks very familiar and I wonder what secret is behind that eyepatch..
Fun fact: Julius would be voiced by the same person who voiced Lelouch as well.

I'm not surprised Jun Fukuyama is voicing Julius considering the results. I'm excited to see Suzaku in episode two since he's my favorite character in the series.

My favorite character got killed off in R2....

My favorite is Orange Boy Jeremiah especially in 2nd season. Dude is loyal as hell and would trust him to watch my back.

Mine was Shirley.... I just liked her appearance and her undying loyalty... she got it bad in R2...

He's my second favorite. Back when R2 was still airing, I made a motivation on him to describe his badass loyalty.

Da feels... da feels.

I don't care if Rolo made up at the end with his sacrifice. The fact that he killed Shirley made my hate for him extend even more.

That rurush was in a Code Geass manga if im not wrong. Was it where the wheelchair-chan got the geass instead or rurush?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat....?

I can not contribute to this conversation, I never watched Code Geass.

I've been watching Excel Saga again, man was that show so wacky and so hilarious, even after seeing Puni Puni Poemi. Still, Menchi's song in the credits is probably one of saddest scenes ever.

Out of curiosity, can anyone recommend any good psychological or satire manga?
Among the manga I've read recently, Monster, Bokurano, Future Diary, Kaiji, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Franken Fran seem to stand out.
On a different note, any flat-out ridiculous/hilarious manga like Legend of Koizumi would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Higurashi & Umineko series is good psychological thriller, but man does it have a lot of arcs.

I watched two of the Higurashi animes, but I heard the original sound novels are better than the respective manga/anime adaptations. I don't know if I want to go through the Umineko sound novel or manga given that the Higurashi series ended up taking quite a while.

I prefer the anime adaptions as they set the tone for what suspense is. The games are great as well, but the animation is way too chibi-ish.

Don't even bother with the anime adaptation of Umineko, Visual Novel or nothing. It's for your own good.

Yeah, you have to be very hopped up on LSD to make it through those horrifying scenes in Umineko. Fortunately, I am able to get through it with no problem or are you referring to how bad Umineko is done in it's anime adaption counterpart aside from the Visual Novel?
