Plot:
"Skullgirls have always loomed upon New Meridian and other parts of the world. Bringing sorrow to families, crushing others lives, as well as bringing misery to innocent civilians. But Annie of the Stars is always there to search for the next Skullgirl, determined to destroy the Skullheart for good! However, how does she react when she encounters her worst enemy.....

AOTS will play similar to a Mega Man game, with selectable 8 stages, and fortress bosses. However, the gameplay will also include some Strider elements as well. Better attack hard and fast!

Annie herself will play similar to Zero from the Mega Man X series. Directional input Special Moves, Wall kicks, Double jumps, everything!

Showcase of Annie’s slick moves! There are hidden ones throughout the game!

Wall Kick: Allows Annie to reach higher places. You can slide down the wall when not jumping, however your jump will ‘bounce’ you in the other direction.

Evasive Combat Roll: A invincible roll that protects you from damage. You can see it in motion here:

Double Jump: Allows Annie to another jump to gain more height.

Cosmic Sword: Her main attack of course! You will be able to do chain combos in the air as well. The second animation is her launcher.

In stages, you will encounter bones in random places, which are the currency.

From left to right:

1-Up: Gives Annie an extra life. In the HUD of the game, it’s represented with a star.

Shock Guard: Reduces the damage taken from spikes. Can be used twice in a single stage.

Damage Reducer: Reduces half damage taken from enemies.

Sagan Moon-Bike: Gives Annie the ability to ride Sagan for a short period of time. Can also shoot projectiles.

My Little Quasars: Gives Annie 3 little shields that orbit around her. You get three for each buy.

Cosmic Sword Upgrade: Each upgrade gives you a new ability! The sword reaches 5 levels at max

Level 1 - Default

Level 2 - Gives you the ability to use Galaxy Cutter (Jump + Special)

Level 3 - Gives you the ability to use Destruction Pillar (Up + Special)

Level 4 - Gives you the ability to use North Sword (Down + Special)

Level 5 - Gives you the ability to use Crescent Cut (Hold Special)

Energy Balancer: Gives you more weapon energy than usual.

I actually can't wait for this. Hopefully it won't my crash my computer like the demo did. It looks too fun to not play.

My one regret about this game is that her rival isn't named May/Mae/Mai. Annie / May would have been amusing. :P

Everything else looks really, really, really impressive.

Alright played through the 3 stages of the showcase now, first thing I noticed not sure if intentional was that I couldn't jump up a wall while holding forward if I was right next to it.

I think the fall speed is just a little bit too fast, could be a problem when descending in full stages if there are traps or enemies, might just be from me playing Megaman feels a bit faster than that, the wall slide is super fast.

Everything else seems to function well, love the 8-bit versions of the SG music.

The platforms you can't slide on are basically tests for different type of grounds. Also we'll take in mind what you said about the fall speed

Actually I meant something different, when you're right next to a wall holding forward Annie doesn't wall cling.

In Megaman X there is no wall clinging until you have negative velocity, to avoid Annie having a seizure when you jump at the bottom of the wall (which no one wants) I employed the same thing.

I'm the programmer, by the way. I'm a scrub but I think I'm good enough to pull off a twist on a Megaman clone. If you have any problems running the game or feedback then feel free to post it here or PM me, every complaint goes towards making the game better so do not hesitate!

Also the demo was more like a little programming revision thing for me, as I hadn't done anything in months (so the code is messy and not easy to add to). I've pretty much stopped working on that version and have moved onto the actual version which will be made when we have all of the gameplay features in concrete.

At the moment the changes I am certainly making are as follows:
  • Graphics drawn in OpenGL, instead of SDL (which will make certain visual effect far simpler)
  • In-game level editor akin to that of RPG Maker (so pieces will have different shapes depending on their position; i.e corner pieces will be curved off)
  • Option between permanently centred camera (the current mode) and bordered camera (seen in most 2D platformers). Bordered camera will be active by default.
  • Screen size options (courtesy of OpenGL), either 640x480, 320x240, fullscreen (maintained aspect ratio) or fullscreen (stretch).
  • Keyboard mapping options
  • Controller mapping options (including D-Pads this time =_=")
  • Better collision (like SG's, where no matter how fast Annie's moving she won't pass through solid blocks)
  • Effects such as dust on the wall slide
  • Sound effects
  • Gameplay beyond running, jumping and sliding down walls
  • Volume options (BGM, SFX, Voice Acting)

If there are any other UI options that you feel should be expected by any game (be it indie or professional AAA) then do not hesitate to say so. Desires for level editor features are particularly useful as it will be a pain to edit later and it's better to have all the features planned before starting.

The next (software) update won't be for a while, but it will be pretty big. Hopefully it'll have most, if not all of the amendments mentioned above so it's definitely something worth looking forward to.

Honestly it's things like this that inspire me to move forward with my game projects. Although currently lacking resources, it's projects like these that keep my spirit high and keep pushing me forward to completing my own games , because anyone can do it if they put their minds to it.

Mighty No.9 and Annie of the Stars will be 2 MegaMan styled games that I'll enjoy playing very much. I hope to see you guys continuing to update the project and I can't wait for more things in the future.

Anais is also a very awesome character (Second to Annie of course).
 
I love the 8-bit versions of the Skullgirls soundtrack! I especially liked the 8-bit The Legend of the Skull Heart boss theme.

Thank you ;~; I'm not sure if they'll continue using that theme as time goes on since I left the project, and they have someone else working on the music, but I'm glad you love it!!

Trust me, working on sheet music for The Lives We Left Behind has taught me just how hard it can be to learn music by ear. <shivers>

It was the next song I was going to finish for the game x_x but I got caught up with some things, and now I'm not part of it anymore, lol But I will finish the song in due time. I still have the music for it right here on my desktop :) I'd love to help you out with some of the music and maybe even discuss it. Do you have a Skype?
