Project Annie of the Stars fangame

Just wanted to quickly drop in here and say that if alt OSTs become a thing, I'd like to collab w/ @Night Phyre as far as converting his work into VRC6 chiptunes. You guys have the potential to give me a lot to work with, and I recently came across a few tools that really help with transcribing :3
It's a fan game, so alt OSTs are always a thing!

I will, however, work with you so that you have access to my stems and files for the OST. This way, you can make your de-mixes without having to give yourself a headache figuring out every little midi note.

So I'm probably being an impatient jerk or something, but is that AotS Tumblr even updated anymore? Being a big fan of the Mega Man art style (And absolutely elated to see the Skullgirls characters getting spritework befitting of their level of quality) and gameplay, I was very interested in this fangame, and thus followed the Tumblr and asked a small handful of questions...but it looks like it hasn't been updated in months.
So is it still being updated? Is there somewhere else I should look for AotS updates (Perhaps the Twitter, though that would inconvenience me, not possessing one myself)? I would lend my support to the project as a voice actor, but guys can't voice-act girls, and I don't have a good quality mic or audio-editing know-how off-hand anyway.

This inactivity has caused me to leave the project, but who knows? They could still be working on it, I guess. I'm inclined to believe the most likely explanation: that a volunteer project consisting mostly of kids just never ended up going anywhere.

C'est la vie.

The game is still being made. A lack of updates comes from the fact that they don't have much to update with at the moment, but rest assured things are getting done despite what a particular naysayer might say. I'm pushing them to continuously work on it, but most of them are in their final years of high school, so they have to prioritize school above everything else. Come this summer vacation, they're planning to kick it into overdrive with the Annie game, so expect more news to come out once they've graduated. Their education and future matters more than some dumb fan game, in my opinion.

I should remind Spacewhale to update the blog with some things he has made, like some animations he posts on his personal account.

The real kid is the one who decides to drop out of the project because "wah wah no one ever talks to me". The fact that they're still making the game without you speaks volumes for them. Boasting about how much of kids they are and here you are being a condescending brat about it on a forum board says nothing for you besides pure bitterness. Who's the real kid?

I don't come on the Skullhearts forum often and I have to say I have also been neglecting the AotS Tumblr, especially since I'm one of the members who should keep it updated when necessary. I really need to get my gear into fixing the blog fully, and I apologize about that. I will try to update it sometime within the week. I've been busy with work and have been doing other important things. As what Lumen has mentioned, it is best to keep in mind that Whale and the other members are indeed still in school and will be graduating soon. I have said this to Whale myself, and I really want him to focus on his priorities first.

In your case, I am deeply upset with how you treat our group as if we do not do anything at all. You continue to call Whale and the rest "kids", assuming that he's a little child, and it seems that you do not see that he's still working on other important life matters. You have been unprofessional and should have kept our business by not stating in other threads what you think of us. True, we have had our ups and downs, but you still have no right to blurt out to the public that the group is not doing anything at all. You have made no effort whatsoever to keep in contact with us besides through a document that Whale has shared with you. You have not bothered trying to ask for anyone's contacts through Skype or Tumblr.

But alas, you have implied (so painfully obvious) that you did not want to work for the team anymore in another thread, and that you had to say such things in a chat as well that we have recorded down.

Continue to doubt us all you want, but we'll make sure to provide the goods, and we'll bring this fan game out.

First off, let's make sure we don't let this discussion devolve to the point it needs moderation (not pointing at anyone in particular, I'm just laying it out there so we never get to that point).

Secondly, there's a good reason I'm using the word, "kids." D'Angelo is literally a kid. He's in high school (as are other members of the team). Other than a sense of bruised pride, what exactly is your objection to my calling him a kid? It's not a means to try and say, "hey, what an immature baby this guy is," it's a literal description, and I use it to explain why there's been little to no progress on the game: he's a teenager, and teenagers are flighty and inconsistent. That's the nature of being young.

Thirdly (and I've spoken to Lumen Fortuna about this same point), how exactly was it my responsibility as sound engineer to stay in touch with the project lead? Whale insisted on being in charge. Did he just want a title? Because when I work on music for other projects, out in the real world, the project lead gets in touch with me. That's kinda their job. It's more than just a feel-good self-description.

Along with all the other things in my life, I also work on a team of game developers right now. I'm a project lead. I make myself available at all times of the day, via email, Skype, and phone, and I set meetings to evaluate the project and keep things on track. I do this even though I have far more to fill my day than a high school student who lives with their parents. I do it, so what's the excuse here? You're busy with life? We all are. Stop getting indignant and just admit the truth of the matter: none of you are taking this seriously. The glow is gone. It's not exciting to you. You don't care anymore. You've moved on, and you say you'll do it later.

Or, finish the game.

I completely understood the first three not until I got to the end. There you again, DOUBTING us again. You don't know how determined everyone in the group is to getting this game done. And who said we didn't care anymore? Certainly not us. Stop shoving things down our throats, saying that we don't care. We're not going to drop this game. If anything, you're our motivation as to why we're getting it done. I suggest you sit down and relax since you're not a part of our group anymore.

And what will happen when it's done? Will you take back what you say? Probably not.
And we'll be proud to say that we finished this game, despite your efforts to continue to bring us down.

Sorry, long post about the game and everything

Contrary to the attitudes of a certain member, the game is essentially still receiving updates. The only area in which it is lacking is sadly also the most important for you guys: The programming. As the programmer it is my responsibility to put assets and ideas together, however university was considerably more rough on me than I had expected (which is why there are times when I've thought "hey I've almost done all the work I'll be able to work on the Annie Game an, posted that I'll be able to work on it soon in this thread only for more work to be piled on top at the last second), a more in-depth explanation of why it's taking me so long would get a little too personal for a public forum, however if you really wish to no then I have no qualms explaining via PM.

Anyway, as for work that is being done on the game, Whale has still been making a large amount of assets, cleaning up gameplay designs and - despite the belief that people under the age of 18 are incapable of doing anything worthwhile in their freetime - sorting out issues with the team. If I had been working at the pace he's been going then we'd have at least half a game already.

There is a happy ending to all this, and I did inform Night Phyre about this a short while before he decided to announce his dissatisfaction in a chat-room of people who have nothing to do with the project - professional, I know. Basically college ends in 3 months, for 3 months after that I have absolutely nothing to do. For the past 2 months I've been brushing up on my rusty programming skills, looking into various things (such as improved collision, having looked into the separating axis theorem and speculative contacts, among others) as well as planning out an engine and setting up various fundamental classes to deal with stuff such as opening a window, resizing a window, drawing to it, switching to fullscreen, blah blah blah.

I would like to promise a full level by the end of my holidays, however if my inexperience holds me back then I - at the very least - intend to give people something more promising than the previous demo (like a combat demo and engine-showcase, or something). If I fail to do that then that would be a sign that speaks poorly of this game's state, however there is no way I'm not finishing this game after the help I've received and how far the rest of the game is at the moment. It would be a shame to let something like this fall into a dump.

One last thing, it's a bit scarce right now and I'll probably be vague as to avoid spoiling the game's content, but I will be updating a blog so that people can see that programming work is, in fact, being done on the game. These posts should become far more frequent when college ends and if it turns out people are actually interested I'll make it a weekly thing. The blog is here:
http://dixies-domain.blogspot.co.uk/

Awwww yeaaaah, things are getting super juicy up in here! I love me a good argument :)

Real talk though, you guys really do need to be more vigilant about providing updates for the public. Pretty much the only person I ever see posting updates about the game is SpaceWhale, and even then it's been like 5 months since I've seen anything from him. Granted I don't keep up with the project very much and I don't pay any attention to the Tumblr or anything, but from where I'm sitting it doesn't look like the project is going anywhere.

Now if the project has been making progress then you guys should be sharing what you have so far! At the very least, keep people posted even if progress isn't being made. It doesn't matter how "motivated" or "hard working" you are if there's nothing to show for it.

And sorry, but "I have to focus on school right now" is a lame ass excuse. Once you've graduated and moved into the real world you'll wish you had all the free time you had back in school. If I can manage all of the part-time work, freelance jobs, hours of unpaid animation work, AND multitudes of side projects that I do WHILE keeping up on a weekly if not daily schedule then you better believe a bunch of highschool students have enough free time for a side project like this. Now I'm not saying that people shouldn't prioritize their education over something like this (because they should), I'm just saying that it's not an excuse to stop working.

It's worth noting that I've been asked to join the project before. This was many, many, many, many months ago. I've since then offered to help out several times, and each time the response was "sure, I'll message you about the project later." Now it's about 5 or 6 months later and I have yet to receive such a message. And here I was ready to do all sorts of stuff since it seemed like a fun little project. And please don't tell me that it's my fault for not following up on the project or pushing myself to work on it. How I choose to spend my time is my own business, I simply wasn't going to waste time pursuing a project in which no one was even communicating with me. If I offer to help someone and they don't have the decency to even acknowledge my offer then it clearly wasn't worth my time in the first place :)

p.s. - I'd be careful with how you guys treat criticism and public responses. No matter how much you say that things are getting done or that people are working hard on the game you have yet to prove it. With a group project like this I expect to see minor updates at least once a week, maybe two. They don't even have to be updates as long as someone is interfacing with the public in some manor, even if no progress is being made. I really want to see you guys succeed! Even though I don't keep up with the project I think it's a great thing to be doing and I've seen some awesome things come out of the work that's been done so far. But seriously, as far as I can tell it looks like nothing is getting done, so when I see people chewing other people out simply because they're being a negative Nelly over a project like this it really makes the people behind the project look bad. If you can prove the project is being worked on, then do so. If you can admit to faults in the project management and execution, then improve upon them. If you can't find the time or motivation to work on the project, then say so. Otherwise nothing will ever get done, which would be a real shame.

If anything, you're our motivation as to why we're getting it done. I suggest you sit down and relax since you're not a part of our group anymore. And what will happen when it's done? Will you take back what you say? Probably not. And we'll be proud to say that we finished this game, despite your efforts to continue to bring us down.
It must weigh so heavily on you, having me bring you down like this. I can see how a person would be upset with me having offered to record an entire soundtrack, engineer all the voice acting, and provide a full SFX library. It must have been so upsetting getting those tracks, and having people really like them. Even more upsetting must have been how willing I was a to help organize things, even as every other, "musicians," dropped off the project because it was starting to look like it might be actual work. It's a good thing you copied that chat log, because you could probably convict me in tumblr court!

If mean ol' Night Phyre is your motivation to finish the game, that's fine. It certainly didn't motivate you back when I was helping.

So if it succeeds it's thanks to you, and if it fails you called it beforehand and it just supports your belief that kids can't work on things for prolonged periods of time? Wonderful. You can go on telling yourself, and other people what you believe; I no longer have any drive to try and stop you, nor will I involve myself with you beyond criticisms of the game itself once we have our demo out. I have suggested to other team members to do the same thing.

On that note, @Skullmageddon has made the very good point that we shouldn't be leaving people in the dark on all this work I've claimed to have gone on behind the scenes. I am happy to say that we - or at the very least, I - will be updating you on what's going on with the game on a weekly basis.

These updates will be every weekend and will differ in content (some weeks you'll get stuff from me, other weeks from other team members) and may become even more frequent after I have put together an engine and demo.

That was the biggest fit I have ever seen thrown online.
You should try your luck in the movie business.

And there you go continuously spreading misinformation. I specifically left because I thought I'd be getting a job soon after, and seeing as I was still in the learning process of attempting to learn the 8-bit style, I figured I wouldn't have time to balance out a job, learning how to make music, and making music for a game as well.

"A 'musician' making music for a game when they don't know how to make music?!!?!?"
Well hey everyone on this team is an amateur at something. I'm fortunate for Spacewhale being the kick in the back I needed to get me motivated to do something I'd been wanting to do for years prior.

"B-but I balance twenty jobs while also working on six games and I still have time for the Annie game!!"
It's too bad we're not the same people?

Besides, I was having more fun working with Ceeberoni. She and I were both learning how to emulate the chiptune sound and we both had fun with it, and people in the fandom loved it at the time. Reason why she jumped ship from the project is still a very personal reason I don't wanna go throwing around out of respect for her privacy, but if you wanna go ask her yourself to actually have some credible reason as to why she and I left instead of saying "wow what a bunch of kids they left because ACTUAL work", then feel free to do so: http://ceeberoni.tumblr.com/ask

I also decided to drop out because she left, and, well, working with you wasn't particularly exciting despite how long of time I stuck around after her, as well as my own personal reasons I don't need to mention on here.

Take that as you will, but your unprofessional and inconsiderate attitude towards this has left a very disgusting taste in not only my mouth, but lots of other people on the team and Skullheart. To think you actually procreated twice.

excuse me if you are going to argue it is fine but leave his family life out of this, and any other low blows that are going to happen from this

Damn, had no idea this was happening in the community. :/ We're all Annie fans here, but it looks like things are turning sour. And it could get worse real quick if we let it. If the Starcruisers are ever going to kick the bucket, they should to go out as a fabulous supernova, not as a fizzled-out white dwarf.

I would like to take this time to remind everyone who the real enemy is:

Tumblr_m2hdmxPgq31rngqyzo1_500.png

Just kidding, Minnette has nothing to do with this (Or does she? She might be up to something...), but for real though, Annie fans shouldn't be fighting amongst each other. We should set a good example for the rest of the Skullgirls fanbase.

You do realize that the Starcruisers dying out would involve the loss of EVERY Annie fan.

That includes me.

Annie will forever be the star.

Hey guys, hypothetically, if one were considering to try writing a new Annie/Main Theme for the fangame, what style would best fit Annie (ex. upbeat and poppy, Super Mario Galaxy -style bombastic, etc, all assuming it would be in 8-bit of course).

I am considering working with Lumen Fortuna on the soundtrack for the game, but I would like to try my hand at writing at least one piece for the fangame before I am certain that I can do it.

I suppose that depends on a few things: whether you intend to preserve a musical similarity to Skullgirls itself, whether Annie in this game is in character as a no-nonsense warrior or more of the cutesy magical girl persona, and consistency with the visual style of the fangame itself.

Personally, out of the given examples I'd vouch for the Mario Galaxy-style bombastic type of music and see how that works out. It's versatile and honestly, it's just plain cool.

Personally I agree with LK, in terms of preference. At the end of the day though, you'd want a consistent style across all the tunes in the soundtrack, so the best choice is probably to go with a style that follows your intentions for the other tracks that you may work on if you decide to stick around.

This isn't really related to the fan game but how do you do it man, how do you live with just that one letter hanging out all alone there? Maybe it looks different from your computer, but this is what I see and it's driving me nuts. Alright that's all I had to say, good luck on your progress.

Completely off-topic, yes, but to me it looks like the difference between Denizen's view and my view is that for some reason, the username text is bolded in his. It's all one line for me, unbolded, same as Spacewhale.

That's so bizarre. Is it browser differences, or...? Who knows.

Ah who cares, let's not sweat the small stuff.

Well I'll at least say this, it probably has something to do with the fact that I'm using a Mac.

Mac OS X and Windows font rendering makes the difference here. Welcome to only a small small small snippet of the awful things web developers have to deal with!

Ok I gotta say it. Why does everyone love Annie so much. I don't get it.

She's cute, she's badass, she has a nice looking design and a fun backstory. Ain't that complicated.
