Can't find players of my skill level

May I ask why there's so many intermediate to Expert players being found in Beginner lobbies?

I've set my skill level to beginner, and no matter what lobby I go in, I always find someone who knows long/complex combo's that don't give me a chance to react. I'm learning to the play the game, but I don't really find fighting AI all that fun. I have been learning to play as much as I can at the moment. I spend most of my time in the tutorials learning the different moves and such, but I don't get why I always find higher-grade players in beginner matches?

And before I'm given the "get gud scrub, theyre pushing you to learn the game, they are having a laugh" malarkey, don't bother. First, pushing someone to learn how to play at anything other than their own pace can cause them to either hate the game, or learn to play at am much slower pace than they would otherwise do so. I'm not one for giving up, each and every game I'm in I try my hardest, even if it isn't enough, I don't just sit at the back of the screen waiting for them to beat me.

I would just prefer a nice, fun fight, with players that are at about the same skill level as me. I mean, there's the entire possibility that I might just be so bad at the game that beginner players look like experts to me. I'm not putting that past me, don't get me wrong.

I love the game, it's tutorial is by far one of the most elaborate and substantial tutorials for a fighting game I've ever seen, and the combat flow flawlessly from frame to frame and move to move. The AI aren't nearly as thick as most games on this genre, (Mainly Soulcalibur) and the players in general seem really nice. Even when I'm getting my ass handed to me. But it just frustrates me slightly that I can't Seem to find players of my skill level. I mean, I'm all up for having fun, and if being good at the game and playing lower skill-level people if fun, then who am I to stop you. It's a game. You're meant to have fun.

That's what I'm trying to do, but as someone who in fighting games, doesn't like fighting AI, because it doesn't feel like much of an accomplishment to beat them, I don't want to be stuck in the middle, where it's either boring AI, or extreme-online.

Please get back to me on this. Any constructive criticism on different things will not be taken in offense. I'm open to all and any kind of help.

Try using the PC Matchmaking thread here - http://skullgirls.com/forums/index.php?threads/pc-master-race-a-k-a-the-steam-matchmaking-thread.9/ There are loads of players that consider themselves to be beginners and you can try sending friend requests to them.

Also, it's not exclusive for SG when experienced players join beginner lobbies to troll. It happens in other fighting games. Sometimes it's the other way around. During the free weekend some n00bs joined lobbies that were clearly titled "Casual Matches - Experts" and then got their asses kicked.
 
Outside of dicks floating around beginner lobbies when they should really be in expert, a lot of people who don't realise they're not beginners anymore still play in beginner lobbies.

Best to find some people online (here, Steam boards or wherever) and add them to your friends list for some private matches to get games with people of the same skill level.

I'll check it out, I'm rather new to the forums in the first place, so it'll be nice to get to know people. ^^ Thank you. And yeah, I guessed it's not this game alone. I used to be a heavy Soulcalibur player, and when I first started playing after jumping up from 3-4, I noticed that a lot of the newbie lobbies were tournament-level players looking to goof around. But I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah, I understand that people sometimes don't notice that they've gotten better 'till they play again, that's why I don't get mad at people when it happens. I understand that. It's just frustrating me that pretty much every game I found was that kind of player. I've got a few friends, but I do want to make new ones, so that I have people to play/learn with. In my opinion, games are near almost always more fun when there's someone there doing the same thing as you.
 
I am a beginner too. Did you want to become steam friends and we can have some matches?
 
Wow I think that I've actually bumped into you in one of those beginner lobbies. I apologize if I gave you a bad experience in that lobby. Like what someone said earlier, I think I'm one of those guys that still hangs around beginner lobbies because I still think I'm really bad. It's kind of hard to gauge where I'm at because sometimes I run into some decent competition in those beginner lobbies so I feel like I'm in the right place. On another note, I do believe that playing better players is a good way to learn what's wrong with how you play. I believe I ran into some very experienced players that were just hanging out in beginners (I think one of them was even on Mike Z's friend list). Needless to say that I got bodied but in the process, I learned quite a bit. So if you're ever feeling up for the challenge then feel free to add me. I'd be more than happy to help you out and give you pointers.

Looking at your steam name, yeah, we did meet. And like I said before, what you did/do is understandable. I know fine well that there's always more than one level of beginner/intermediate/Expert, that's why I don't complain, I just sit back and try to enjoy the game, even if I'm getting my ass handed to me. And I do agree, it does teach you how to play, but the fact is, I'm the kinda person that when pushed to do something, will learn how to do it 10x slower than if I was left to learn myself. But I know it would help others. And as for the last part, sure. ^^ I'm always willing to try get better at the game.

Expert is a very strong word.

The guy who won the last tournament I was in makes intermediate lobbies all the time and kicks my ass everytime I play with him. I was only 4th in that tournament and I do consider myself an "expert", at least enough that I won't join beginner lobbies.

Anyway, my tip to you is that you learn those long and complex combos. Ever since I first started with fighting games I am a lab monster, even if I lost the match, games where I was able to finish my 80% damage combos were the most satisfying experience I've had with video games. It also really helps you to understand your character, seeing what they're capable of and checking if they really fit you and your style.

Look around the forum, there are tons of guides for each character that tell you everything you need to know about everyone in the game, from offense to defense and movement. When you start to effectively use combos, spacing and reset is when you make the most out of the game.

tl;dr: gid gud, but because it's fun.

p.s.: put valentine first :P

Like I said, recently I've been spending a very long time in the training section, learning about both Valentine and Fortune, and the combo's they're capable of. But my problem is whenever I remember what button corresponds to what attack, I forget the next day, so I go from learning a complex/avarage combo and pulling it off, to not being able to make a combo past 15. I'm starting to leave myself notes on my PC for me to check now, so that I remember.

Also, shhhhh. Valentine has a good intro move (Enter move/whatever) that I like. >.>
 
Try using something other than the web page. Go to the Friends tab, see if you have a Friend Request there.

You can go ahead and add me aswell, I´m fairly new to the game and for now I can only play 1 character (somewhat, due to the constant updates...not that that´s a bad thing) so I´ll probably get bodied but aslong as I learn something it´s never a bad thing.

Also to be a bit on topic yeah, it´s very hard to gauge a skill-level for some people, and better players going into beginner lobbies is nothing new; it´s something you should probably try and embrace. Playing people who are good at the game is never a bad thing aslong as you try to make it into a learning experience. I´m still a beginner at SG but it´s not my first fighting game, so I might pick up on certain concepts a bit faster (or I may not, I suck ww) so some people might consider me to be intermidiate and such; it´s something you could argue endlesly.

Anyway enough rambling, if you feel like bodying a solo Filia/Squigly go ahead and add me. I´m in EU so I can´t guarantee a good connection, but we won´t know till we try. My steam name is in my profile.

Three levels of skill isn't enough. Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced.

There should be 5 IMO.

Well, if you don't have enough EU players for yourself, you can try adding me, as I'm also from europe. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I'm rather advanced in the game, but I could try playing with a different team than my main. I don't train with anyone else but them.

Sure, not a problem. My Xbox power supply broke down earlier this morning so I´ll mostly focus on SG until I get a replacement going. We can definitly get a few games in.
