Making this thread to keep track of my learning curve. Makes it easier for me to understand the game at a competitive and deeper level. Never really played fighters before (If you don't count Brawl or BlazBlue) and especially not on a serious and competitive level. After watching this years Evo, it made me want to get into a fighting game and my friend suggested me SG and I've been loving it ever since I got it. Already put in a solid 40 hours into the game in the span of two days. Let's see how far I can get into improving myself.

General
  • Try each character, figure out their movesets and learn what they can do and what they can't do. Advantages, weaknesses, hitboxes, etc. (Literally just play the tutorials)
  • Find out which characters I want to main and stick with them. Preferably 2 characters at first and then move unto 3 as I get better at the game.
  • Watch videos, search online, learn combos, understand the mechanics, practice until perfection.
  • Get used to the keyboard because using a controller sucks.
  • LEARN THE Z MOTION.
Bella
  • Practice the basic standup combos.
  • Learn to freaking use the grabs that she has access to.
Squigly
  • Love the character, but wondering if starting with her is a bit too advanced for a new player.
  • Learn her moveset properly. So many different moves.
Any advice given is appreciated!

  • Getting better at playing with keyboard and knowing where everything is after the switch from controller.
  • Still trying to figure out who I like and who I don't like. At the moment I've taken a liking to Squigly, Cerbella and Big Band. Big Band + Cerabella has been doing me pretty good lately vs. my friends.
  • Made a rule where I have to execute every move a character has available at least 10 times without fail before I go onto practicing combos.
Big Band
  • Get used to holding backwards when doing normals to charge up for my Brass Knuckle specials.
  • Learn to use the Sound Stun efficiently and how to parry.
  • Find some beginner levels combos that I can execute easily.

  • WOO. I'M USED TO KEYBOARD.
  • I actually know my characters movesets. Wow.
  • Still need to form a team and I can't decide on any characters yet.
Big Band
  • Been practicing different easy combos that I've been able to execute in real matches. I've also gotten better at zoning and playing safe.
Squigly
  • Better at executing moves during real matches and knowing which situational move to use. Also been practicing a basic air combo which consist of: s.LP > s.MP > s.HK > j.LP > j.MP > j.HP. If I land with my opponent and I'm fast enough, I'm able to to continue the combo using a standard s.LP > s.MP > s.HP combo.
  • Need to improve on stance cancels and incorporating it into my combos. Also have to learn to use them uncharged during a combo.
Eliza
  • Tried her out in the beta. Really like her moveset and her character. I think I might make her an official addition to my team once she's officially released.

  • Huge improvement overall. Thanks to a friend who added me and taught me the basics of every character, I've been gaining an understanding on how they work and what their general gameplay style is. He also showed off some combos for my mains and overall was just really helpful.
  • Improved my pushblocking by a lot. Realizing I could use my macro for this made it a lot easier.
  • Learned what burst baits are and how to counter it.
  • Switched back to controller for now. Might be temporarily. I still feel like it's too clunky and inaccurate but I'll try to stay with one so I don't have the habit of switching back and forth.
  • My mixup game has gotten a lot better.
  • At the moment I've decided to stick with a duo of Big Band + Cerabella. I'm gonna practice them fully before I move on to other characters.
  • Really need to get a lot better at hit confirming. Whenever I hit my opponent and find an opening, I never utilize it and just end up mashing buttons. I have to stay calm and think about my combo options depending on what I hit them with. Needs big improvement.
  • If opponent are using multiple characters, capitalize on them switching in or when you K.O. one of their characters by either air grabbing or comboing them as they enter.
  • Use assists in better situations instead of randomly using them from time to time. Time them better and know what my assists does.
  • Learn how to execute blockbuster sequels when possible.
Cerabella
  • Several combos I have to keep practicing:
    • Mid-Screen Air Bag: Poke > c.MK > Jump > QCF + Throw
    • Corner Air Bag: c.HP > j.LP > j.LK > QCF + Throw
    • s.MK into j.MP trick: Poke > c.MK > j.MP > j.HK
    • Poke into Diamond Drop: Launcher > j.LP Rapid Fire > Land > QCF + Throw
Big Band
  • Need to use his Brass Knuckle grab a lot more often during combos. Especially when the opponent has a tendency to combat in the air or jump around a lot.
  • As I become more confident in my skill, I'll have to learn how to parry so I can have an easier time counterattacking.
The rest of the cast
  • Learned general gameplay style and their movesets.

This is really useful, thanks!

General
  • Improved my blocking. Been practicing against heavy mixups that include coming in from different sides.
  • Not falling for burst baits as easily anymore and can tell when and when not to burst.
  • Trying to get used to using the d-pad on the controller and still debating if I should stick with keyboard or not. Sometimes it doesn't do the inputs that I want. DP and quarter circle motions in particular.
Cerabella
  • Found and practiced a BnB combo that I can now execute.
Big Band
  • Found and practiced a BnB combo that I can now execute.

General
  • Improved my blocking even more by facing intermediate opponents who utilize advanced mixups including overheads.
  • Overall gotten better at doing mixups and hit confirming. Still need to improve on creating advantages from those confirms.
  • Improved my punishing when my opponent makes a mistake or drops a combo.
  • Improved on reading my opponent and figuring out their tendencies.
Big Band
  • Need to practice combos that utilize his Brass Knuckle moves
    • c.LK > c.MP > c.HK > Brass Knuckles H is a good practice combo.
  • When I do a Giant Step I can add in a heavy Brass Knuckles for extra damage before I do my level 1 ground blockbuster.
  • Sometimes I play too defensively and has been told to not be afraid of pressuring my opponent. I need to improve on pressure and being aggressive.
