Controller/Stick General Questions and Discussion

Ok I don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong, but my fightsticks now won't work with Skullgirls on my Mac. I used Parallels to play the beta and the game before the Mac release. Started up the Mac version and my controller didn't show up. So I went into steam to set it up and it wouldn't give me the axis of the stick itself and now that I attempted to map it, It's like locked into place without letting me edit the controls. Everytime I plug it in, it says "XInput Controller" and when I open Skullgirls, it will let me hit certain buttons that I mapped but the stick won't work (obviously making it unplayable). I have tried both of my fightsticks and they both pop up with that name. I was able to edit it before it updated. Should I get an older version of Steam and try to fix it that way? Also if anyone has any suggestions or is dealing/has dealt with this issue, please give me whatever info you can. Gotta have my travel Skullgirls :PUJNA::PUN:

Heya, I uh, bought a stick and was wondering something.
How do I go about getting some custom artwork?
Do I just get a template and get it printed as a sticker or???
I'm just really clueless on this topic.

You've got a few options. The best thing you can do if you have the money and/or you have a fightstick that they support is get a plexiglass cover from this website, which is what almost everyone uses. They will also print your art and cut the holes for the buttons/stick for you. Basically you put the art under the plexiglass which protects it so it lasts while making it comfortable for you to play. They have templates on the website which you will probably want to use even if you don't get the art through them. If they don't have a template/plexiglass for your fightstick, you're going to need to get the art printed elsewhere and have to cut it down to size.
If you don't want to go through them, your other option is to get the art printed by a company, like FedEx/Kinko's. You're going to want to get a laminated label, which has adhesive and is covered in plastic. This is much cheaper although I have seen people say that this wears out over time, so you'll have to buy a new one every once and a while.

Yooo, thanks a lot!
Just a few more additional questions, if you don't mind:
> Is HRAP V3/V4/VX SA Plexi Cover the right choice for the HRAP V?
> Ok, so it says that I have to open up my stick and detach buttons to place the plexi; do I need a soldering tool for this or do the wires just plug-in?

No problem, anytime.
They don't support the HRAP V yet. Taken from the website:
"We will be working on the Madcatz TE2 Type-R plexi and artwork next, and then we will look into the HRAP V5.

Thank you, everyone, for your patience as we continue to review and support the latest fightsticks!"
I'm really sorry about that. Your best bet is to wait until they make a template/plexi for it. I had to wait a few months after the v4 was released to get a template for it (I still don't actually have art on it because I don't know what to draw to put on it), so hopefully it doesn't take them too long.
The wires actually just plug in, which is why fightsticks are relatively easy to mod. You don't need to solder anything.

Does anyone know a good 6 button controller for PC?

I've heard good things about the Hori Fighting Commander 4. I don't know about you guys, but a lot of my Gamestops in my area (California) seemed to have stocked this controller because of the SF5 hype.

Probably gonna snag this controller as well.

paging @Kai because I'm 99% sure he plays on one of those 6-face button fightpads and it seems to work OK on pc for him

I use the Mad Catz FightPad SD, and it's pretty good. The floating D-pad was the biggest allure for me, it helps my execution a lot. I actually do own a Hori FC4, too, but just for SFV. The buttons actually feel better than the FightPad's, but the d-pad is unsatisfactory, imo. It has a rotation function, but it never stays put, and yes, I got it replaced and the replacement has the same problem. It's just not stable, it always rotates away from the normal 90 degree setting (by just a few degree, mind you), which is incredibly annoying. I've kinda gotten used to it, but I'm hoping the new fight pad Mad Catz recently revealed is better.

@Natezer you recently started playing with the Hori FC4 right? I think @Omnyx uses this too?
Yes! I dig it, but my tiny baby twig fingers find it hard to push two P or K buttons at once.

I've been using a Wii Classic Controller Pro, love this pad to death, but have previously just being using it plugged into a Wiimote over Bluetooth, which I know isn't exactly ideal, let alone usable at tournaments. With NEC coming up near me I finally went and bought a USB adapter, specifically this Mayflash model since reviews for it seemed good, but turns out it's a little screwy. Every now and then it'll act like I pressed a whole bunch of buttons that I didn't, which really gets in the way.

Total shot in the dark, I'll be surprised if I'm not the only one here using this, but I figure I might as well ask if anyone might know something about adapters doing this and if there's any possible fix.

Judging by reviews for their products, the build quality on Mayflash stuff seems to be hit or miss. Nearly bought one of their budget sticks recently, but the reviews swinging back and forth between "adequate and sucks" convinced me to grab the Hori FC4 instead.

Yes! I dig it, but my tiny baby twig fingers find it hard to push two P or K buttons at once.

I've got the opposite problem; my fat fingers keep hitting multiple buttons at the worst times. The secondary shoulder buttons are super sensitive too; they can go off when my index fingers so much as brush up against them. Still feels like an improvement overall from my MadCatz BrawlPad though.

does anyone know of pads that work on PS4 (don't have to work on PS3 but it would be nice) besides DS4? My searches for ps4 compatible controllers don't come up with anything besides DS4s and the hori FC4 which I might try but I don't use 6 face buttons so I'd have to see how comfortable hitting the shoulder buttons would be. (For context this isn't for SG; thanks to the fantastic L0 driver I can use my current pad for SG on PS4 but I'm planning on playing SFV and at least so far there have been no announcements that the ps4 version will be compatible with PS3 controllers.)

Hi,

This is my first post to this community, even though I have been following skull girls for a while. I have been into fighting games for a very long time, but I surprisingly have never played one other than super smash brothers which I got pretty good at and used to go to tournaments for. I have decided that I want to get into a fighting game and I am starting out with skullgirls. I plan on going to tournaments for this game and others in the future and from what I have played around with so far I am not a fan of using a pad. So I am planing on getting or most likely building a fightstick. I need help deciding whether to go for the classic stick layout or a hitbox layout (keep in mind I know exactly how to assemble both types of sticks).

TLDR; Hitbox or Classic stick layout? (I am leaning more toward a hitbox but can't decide)

Any help would be appreciated.

It really comes down to preference. If you would prefer buttons for movement, go with a hitbox, and if you want a stick go with a fightstick. There are some differences to consider though; hitboxes are more exact as they are exclusively buttons. I've heard people say getting the diagonals in inputs are difficult (just like with keyboards), though.

If you have experience with keyboard layouts for fighting games and are fond of them, I'd recommend hitbox. Otherwise, it's up to you. Both are viable, and the most I can help is saying that if you want exact movements, go for hitbox, and if you want fluent movements, go with fightstick, if that makes sense. I prefer fightstick because I find movements to feel more natural, personally.
I also want a ps4 compatible DS3
Please tell me those actually exist
I don't know much about controllers, but you'll have to get some form of adapter. I see people referring to this adapter a lot when this topic comes up. The feedback on the product isn't the best, and they're expensive, but it seems like your only option sadly.

cronus converters are basically universally banned from tournaments due to them causing input lag for BOTH players (among other problems) as well as allowing some illegal macroing, they're functional for casual gaming but don't expect to use one at events

Shit, really? Is there any other option?

Would it be possible to gut a ds4 and transfer it to a ds3 shell?
Biggest problem I see, though, is where to put the touchpad without having to cut-out a part of the shell. Then again, I've never done anything with wiring so you could maybe take the pressure sensitive thingy on it and hook it up to the select button?
I'm just desperate...

i know its possible to rip out a ds4 PCB and rewire it to buttons/stick/etc to build a PS4 compatible stick but i dunno if its possible to fit it into a ps3 case let alone hook up all the buttons again. You probably wouldn't be able to use the touchpad though most PS4 sticks don't have a touchpad button to my knowledge

Heyo,
Does anyone know if it's possible to play on PS4 using a PS3 controller (with DS3 cable)?

its not AFAIK, dualshock 3 is like the one ps3-compatible controller that doesn't work on PS4

I'm thinking of transitioning to stick soon, since I want to play the new Guilty Gear and KOF when they come out this year, and I've heard that those are pretty much unplayable on pad. In regards to Skullgirls, I'm also having some difficulty doing airdash cancels reliably; while I've gotten down a lot of combos involving airdashes, it's always inevitable that sometimes my thumb will slip and not press LP and MP at the same time on my Dualshock controller (especially after Savage Bypass).
I don't want to spend more than $100 on a stick, and right now I'm looking to buy Madcatz's SFV Alpha Fightstick when it comes out. The only problem with it is that it has only 6 buttons, which isn't very optimal for a game with assist macros like Skullgirls. Can anyone recommend me a good quality stick under $100? I don't really care how small it is.

@The Victator to my knowledge, pad should be mostly fine if you're playing Xrd. In older versions of gg there were setups that were difficult to escape if you were on pad but I don't think any of those are present in xrd. KOF should also be fine on pad, can't think of any reasons why it wouldnt, beside some inputs being easier through pianoing.

the thingy under your avatar says you play a duo, have you considered switching your second assist call macro to pp for airdashes? That's what I do and it helps me a lot. If you do actually play trio though I guess you could the right stick assist thing since you're on pad, or maybe get used to inputting the assist calls manually instead of using a macro.

Pretty much just what Fizzxwizz said here. Pad is completely viable, and to help with airdash cancels, set a macro.

I've never used that fightstick as it isn't out yet, but that looks uncomfortable as hell to use. It looks really flimsy, and there isn't much space to rest your hands. If you're fine with it, though, go ahead. I believe it has Sanwa parts in it.
Sadly, $100 is kind of cheap for a fightstick. If you want a really good impression of one, you need to be willing to spend a bit more. If you want something a bit bigger for that price range, you can get a Qanba Q1, which seems to be the highest quality option for the price, but it has Qanba parts, which isn't good. I know it is easily modded, so at a later date you can replace them with higher quality parts, if you want. Again, I'm not too familiar with the options for that price range.

My b, I play a 3-char team and was unsure as to who my anchor was going to be. I might try just using the right stick or doing the assist calls by pressing a trigger and a button.

That Q1 really doesn't look appealing to me. I'll probably just wait until the Alpha stick comes out, then ask around or look at reviews to see if it's worth buying.
I've also heard that you can get a good fightstick for like $100 during a major; is Combo Breaker the next major? And if it isn't, what is?

Late reply I know, but with a bit of effort you could take a DS3, preferably a broken one with fried internals but the buttons, triggers, and casing is good, rip most of the electronics out, cut the traces on the PCBs, and sit there rewiring them all to have common ground and wire the other end up to a dsub connector, then plug that in to a plastic project box with a fightstick PCB in it.

It'd be a total bastard to do, but not impossible.

Does anyone have any experience when it comes to simple custom stick board? (i'm new, have mercy) I just want one with art of beowulf and cerebella on the front..

uh depends on what stick you have.
Oh i don't have one, i'm struggling with keyboard, but i was wondering if anyone has had any experience with ordering one, any kind may i add

ah i see.

Does anyone know if a Logitech F310 is compatible with the PS4? I played SG for the first time with my Dualshock 4 yesterday but I'm not a fan of the d-pad or triggers, I'm usually on PC anyways but I'd be nice to keep the same controller.

If its not usable on PS3 than I highly doubt PS4 will be any different
Hori has a good fightpad for a reasonable price if you're interested.

That might be what I have to do as an alternative. Really what I would like is a d-pad similar to the Logitech's it's raised up instead of being embedded in the controller and it makes execution easier for me.

I think you can move the d-pad around on the fight commander that Hori made. You can also make the inputs tighter it more loose too.

i play on it (for what sounds like the same reason as you, I love the dpad), its compatible with ps3 if you use directinput rather than xinput (flip the switch on the back) so it'll work for SG with the L0 drivers but not with other PS4 games

hori fightpad has a very nice dpad and is well built but if you want to play with 4 face + 2 shoulder buttons its kind of awkward, you have to stretch your fingers to hit r1/r2 on the shoulder

Perfect, thanks.
