Dangan Ronpa

So, DanganRonpa V3 will be on the Vita AND PS4!

Thank god, don't have a vita so will finally get to play a DR game, hopefully this will be the first DR game i'm unspoiled on before it releases in the west too!

The trailer makes me think that it'll stick to the 2D sprites for characters, as opposed to Another Episode-esque 3D models, which I'm happy about. It was one of those things that made the franchise feel visually unique.

Nice to hear release news. Still gonna continue to play on Vita since I find VN heavy games more comfy on handhelds.

Oh boy oh boy

Also hi. I recently got invested into this series. Gundham is my husbando.

AYYYYY

Proud of you, son. Did something worthwhile for once.
I can't wait to see where this will go.

Raiden's son is our main character, excellent.

They also announced a Danganronpa 3 anime. So what happened to 2? Did they decide to just skip that one?

Since this is confusing gonna keep it short

The new DR game for Vita/PS4 is not gonna have any relevance to the Hopes Peak DR games. Think of it as a reboot. It's very likely not gonna pull a DR2 ending this time. This makes why there is a PS4 version now way more sense if PS4 gamers who never touched a Vita [or hacked psp for non AE] could play this without needing to know Hopes Peak events.

DR anime was literally the "DR3" people been waiting for years for. Instead of another Vita game they decided to conclude the saga on anime format. From what I seen in various areas this is getting a mixed response which I can understand especially after how the last DR anime was mediocre to say the least.

Here is anime trailer [also spoiler warning common sense: don't watch trailer for a story heavy 3rd/4th games of a series if you don't want spoiler]
Posting it here because it's the sequel of DR1, DR2, and AE games, but any prolonged discussion of the anime should be in a separate thread in the anime section just so we can limit this section to the games as much as possible.

I... don't understand.

That sounds great to me. I like these games a lot more for the cases and characters, not the on-going plot.

Is that Hinata in that trailer? I noticed that someone is wearing cuffs. I can't tell if it's Naegi, though.

I wouldn't be surprised. There was some spin-off LN I think about Hopes Peak academy pre-worst-event-ever too

When are Gundham's nefarious adventures going to be chronicled.

This world simply couldn't handle such knowledge.

I am very excited for the new game.

Also, I'm going to remain hopeful (tee hee) about the anime. It's their decision in the end, and as long as they don't get the same guy who directed the anime based off the first game, it should be fine.

They hinted about it with a leaked list of upcoming PC games for awhile. Funny thing there has been a smartphone port for ages already.

It is a only Playstation thing at least in Japan when your not counting the smartphone. It should be obvious when the new DR wasn't announced for PC at the same time as Vita/PS4. The PC port for the first game is barely happening because the West actually cares enough about PC and it's been long enough/sold enough back when it was a Vita exclusive here. PC is also barely getting the first Disgaea while it's already on #5 now on Playstation. Since they are third party they have no obligation to stick with pure Playstation, but that doesn't mean platform priorities will change in terms of release dates.

So, essentially, just because they don't have to make Dangan Ronpa Playstation only, doesn't mean they won't still give Playstation that little extra attention just because? That's weird, to me... I'm used to, when a company makes a game multiplatform, said company going full hog with it and putting the game on all or most available platforms.

Then again, college has been absorbing my life, as I'm (hopefully) nearing the end, so I haven't had the time to pay attention lately, so I could be wrong about that.

The argument is console gamers [particuarly for localizations on games that don't even have a PC version made in Japan like DR 1 for years] are more likely to play full price for shit at day/week 1 especially when you consider LE packages that cost more then full retail. PC gamers in comparison are too used to buying shit at bargain bin prices for games and if they want to put X on Steam they prefer to have console have the game first for months [worst case years] especially if no PC version already exists [which is most cases since Japan gives little fucks about PC besides VN, doujin, etc] so when they finally bring it to PC MOST cases the price will be dropped on releases since the game was out on awhile, but that will depend on the localizer. IFI who brought over the Nep games use this strategy on their localization. Full price on console then several months later bargain bin price on PC at release

Example Toukiden Kiwami has been on Vita/PS4 for awhile [no PC existed] but when localization eventually made one they made it full price retail which factor that + mediocre port+ no cross play + people don't play hunters on PC made the game port a flop.

Example on opposite end of spectrum is God Eater 2 Rage Burst which is actually getting a simultaneous release with Vita/PS4 despite lack of PC version existing before. Although with how long Bamco took to bring that game it is not surprising they got a PC port done.

Anyway they also officially announced DR2 PC port, but unlike DR1 they didn't give a date yet which makes sense since they want to sell them separately and spaced out for maximum return just like with the Vita localization releases. The Japan release actually bundled both games for the Vita release but that is because they actually played the games already on the original PSP releases unlike the West that didn't get them if you didn't count pirates/mod copies and even then it was only the first DR since fan translations stopped when an official DR2 localization was happening.

First episode of the despair arc doesn't suck!

...as much as the one in the hope arc. Which I admit I put a low bar to vault over, all it had to do was not have every room lit like the Normandy in Mass Effect 1.

So excited for more DR, its my favorite (or at least one of them) series and more expansion to the universe is making me happy

The one supposed to complete the saga. The direction is bad, the brightness of every scene just hurts my eyes and the entire episode is completely swamped in exposition.

I'm ok with and was prepared for the first episode being exposition heavy, and I also don't think it was really to bad. None of the recap stuff ws done in a boring way, we actually got to see
The Ultimate Despairs
in action as opposed to just being told about them. And there's actually quite alot about the structure of this killing game, which is clearly different to DR1/SDR2's that is yet to be explained.

Despair sides first episode was actually more of a disappointment for me, only because it went exactly as suspected. I didnt think that
Chisa being their homeroom teacher
was that big of a surprise considering she basically said so in the first episode of future arc. I'm also not sure how much I like her as a character, she's acting completely differently compared to when we first saw her.

Both series have a lot of room for growth tho, I'm still looking forward.

Pretty much me too :)

Fuck this company.

...Is it because of who was murdered by the traitor in the second Future Arc Episode?

If I'd recapped DR1 before the start of this I might have been a lot more unhappy about this. However, i fully expected her to die. not quite so early tho!

Holy fuck I've been out of the Dangan Ronpa picture for a bit
So there are two animes?
When do they occur chronologically?

can't wait for the
IF YOU DON'T KILL SOMEONE, YOU DIE bracelet which is the explanation for the current death. "Traitor" only means that they betrayed everyone for themselves (we won't find that out yet) but we're still going to be blaming Naegi that he's an actual infiltrator/traitor because this show grinds our gears.
