USA [Dec 11, 2015] NEC 16 - Main Game & $1,000 Pot Bonus (King of Prussia, PA)

You should make a thread for this if you haven't already.

Right as you post that, I made an edit to my post. Aphro is going to make the thread.

There's a high chance Skullgirls won't be at next year's Ceotaku due to the low number of entrants

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Such is the life of a Skullgirls player.

I chose NEC because that's where everyone was, rather than going to CEOtaku to support the game there, and I can only really afford one more major before the end of this year.

Will pre-reg as soon as my phone bill goes through.
Thrilled to meet everyone again!

Just for the sake of getting something else going:

Hey @mcpeanuts would you be down to play a ft7 exhibition set (since you don't do MM's) with me? We're both kind of the "World Warriors" of the SGC and even though the skill is in your favor I think I could put on a good show. Plus I've never played you in a long set, it would give West Coast something to root for, and it would be fun!

(no beef with this one because I love peanuts and want to snuggle with him so end the exhibition with a hug)

Prolly gonna pass tbh I don't like playing sets

Fair enough!

I'll play you. I like sets but also do not like money matches (actually let's make it for $2 MCDOUBLE BOYS)

Christ on a fucking stick.

I don't know who I'm more annoyed at, TO #1 who talks shit about SG openly and is already preparing to take his ball and go home in preparation for a failure that hasn't happened yet, TO #2 who talks shit about SG openly and goes so far as to lie about announcing a tournament and pot bonus, or the community that failed to attend a main stage event with a $1000 pot bonus at a great time in a place with great weather because they arbitrarily decided to attend TO #2's events 3 times a year instead of any of TO #1's events.

Big E's stuff is local to me. I can't really travel that far due to monetary reasons.
Even if the SGC didn't come out in large numbers to his events I'd be going.

basically what geno said, when you consider that the majority of EC skullgirls is either above the Mason-Dixon Line or just below it of course people are going to attend the events most convenient for them. Big E events are reachable by car/bus, Florida isn't, and flying isn't that cheap for povertyboys. To be fair as well, the EC community didn't really commune to decide to go to TFC, and SG is main stage at NEC iirc, with a big pot bonus.

This makes sense for people driving to NEC but not for people flying to NEC. I don't know how much more expensive it is to get flights to Philly vs flights to Orlando, though. I mean it's a lot cheaper for me, but Orlando is like three times as far away.

I'm guessing though that most of the people flying to NEC are not east coast. Naturally the tournament that EC decides to go to will be the tournament that people coming to EC for tournaments will decide to go to. When most of EC is driving, the people flying to east coast will go where the people on east coast are driving.

This is sort of self perpetuating though. Everyone goes to NEC because everyone's going to NEC. IMO NEC is the tournament people who happen to live in the area should go to, and CEOtaku is the tournament people should go out of their way for.

He runs a better tournament. Also I think there's lower odds he would forget that he promised a pot bonus for Skullgirls.

Not saying you shouldn't speak your minds, but perhaps talking shit about TOs before the tournaments isn't the best idea if you want good treatment?

Wasn't all of Socal SG planning to throw SCR under the bus so they could go to CEOTAKU instead? I kept hearing "SCR is too close to CEOTAKU, so I can't afford to go to SCR." I'm sure you guys will get your numbers.

Big E isn't the only TO involved with TFC, he might've played a part in the forgetting or whatever but i'm sure Larry fucked up too. Yeah I won't argue that though Jebailey's a good TO.

And I love Eric I can't wait for NEC <3

It's not "everyone goes to NEC because everyone is going to NEC". East Coast goes to NEC because it's close. Not-east-coast who is coming to east coast for tournaments is going to go to the tournament that east coast is going to. The people on the east coast are going to dictate which east coast events are going to be populated, and we choose Big E based on location.

IMO NEC is the tournament people who happen to live in the area should go to, and CEOtaku is the tournament people should go out of their way for.

The issue is that if everyone in the area of NEC went to NEC and not CEOtaku then there wouldn't be enough people going to CEOtaku from east coast to warrant west coast/midwest coming out here for it. Fortunately there are definitely people going to both (I unfortunately cannot be one of them), and I certainly hope CEOtaku ends up being successful, but I'm just saying location is a big factor.

I think that ship has sailed. Every Big E event I've been to has been worse than every non Big E event (except maybe NCR but that wasn't really the fault of the TOs).

Why do you keep saying east coast when you mean northeast? I don't think Lilman is going to NEC.

Broken Loose has even said (I forget where) that he doesn't think Florida should be considered to be in the same region as NY/NJ/MD etc. Not that I have anything against FL SGC of course but when the vast majority of east coast skullgirls is northeast I don't think it's entirely unjustified to say "when people refer to east coast SG they probably mean northeast". But you're right.

Anyone have links to Jebailey threatening to not include SG in CEOtaku next year due to low entries? I must have missed it

After the year it was a main game (2013??), it got low numbers and hasn't been a main game again since. My understanding is that Jebailey was pretty pissed that Skullgirls players didn't show up. Seems reasonable to assume if the same thing happens at CEOtaku, the game wouldn't be included at future events.

People had been implying though that jebaily had been saying he wasn't gonna include SG at next years CEOtaku already, before the event has even happened yet. Last I saw our prereg numbers weren't topping the event but they were reasonably respectable.

The current prereg numbers are pretty comparable to 2013 CEO.

you know what? I'm just to sit here and wait for NEC so i can meet up with you guys again. Kinda just want to play games and have a good time. The pot is just an excuse to actually practice and make sure some of my shit works in an actual match. so yeah NEC is okay for me and once my life is back in order CEO might be a cool thing to go after.

At least we have Rick, who is the fucking man.

It sucks because, at Combobreaker the proof was in the pudding that if you support our game, we will bring numbers to make that decision worthwhile. We can easily get this community to mobilize and support events. The problem is, what event do we support? Do we go to the established (and poorly run) East Coast major where the majority of the playerbase already is, or the major with the better management that is dangling the carrot in front of us and then ripping it away before we even get a chance to REALLY come out in full force and support the event?

We could do what we did with Combobreaker for another major. Most people are going to go where the players are, but we're like minded enough as a community that we can agree on the events we support and make the big Skullgirls events. The problem is this is actually a "lose-lose" situation for the reasons Broken Loose mentioned in regard to CEOtaku vs NEC. I feel like I can't win unless I attend both, which isn't financially viable for me (and I'm guessing a lot of other people).

This conversation has needed to happen for awhile (although I really don't know if this thread is the best place to have it...)

It sucks because there's a large large chunk of people ready to fly out to whatever the biggest tournament is.

Me included.

But we can only afford to go for one before we have to rebuild the wallet.

So one tournament is going to be pretty stacked for numbers and the others will be up to the local and surrounding scene.

Whatever tournament the entire community chooses to support though, I don't care what it is, I will do my best to be there because I care about seeing the people and players.

Here's the way I look at it as a person on the West Coast looking at East Coast majors to go to:
-The majority of people in the SGC I know who are East Coast are specifically NorEast.
-I want to meet these people and not a whole lot of them are going to CEOtaku. (sadness!)
-More of these people I hang out with are going to NEC, so if I want to meet all these cool people I should go to NEC, despite all the talk that it's a poorly run tourney. (That we should be avoidant of? that's the vibe I'm getting from some people.)

So in a hypothetical "I have $800 to burn on just one EC major," I'd pick NEC 95% of the time because all the people I've never met IRL are going to be there because CEOtaku is relatively far away from them. Would I want to go to both? Certainly. But all things as they are now, I think I would just have a better time in general at NEC in spite of the high possibility of a poorly run tourney.

((All that being said, going out to EC this year is looking less and less likely as the days pass :c))
