Okay, this needs to be asked.

Is it the hypest, or is it THE hypest?

Game should have stuck with the characters Dive/Kick/whatever original characters/ instead of stuffing in fgc celebrity personas into the game as playable characters.

I actually thought it was an unfunny joke when it was just Dive and Kick, but then again I like to play as Dr. Shoals and Uncle Sensei. I wouldn't mind if they had removed FGC personas and just put in original characters or parodies of fighting game characters with Divekicks.

Basically this. I didn't really care when it was just Dive & Kick, but throw in some pretty funny parodies and creative divekicks (Plus The Baz!), and I'm suddenly really interested.

This game is casual-friendly, but then you have to explain all of these memes and inside jokes that are related to American FGC, especially to someone who doesn't live in NA nor watches NA Fighting game streams.

Which online community is largest? PS3 or Steam? I have it on PS3 and there are times where I have to wait a long time for a new online match, especially in Unranked matches.

I think this would have been a silly funny good 1€ game if it had been Dive+Kick and stayed true to "No mechanics"
Instead they're trying to make this a real game, with 20 characters, weird meters, gems (ha-ha) and charge 10€ for it

As a real game, the concept however just doesn't work.

The game is caught somewhere between "We make a fun game that you can learn in 5 seconds" and "Keits genius fightan game which is the future of all fightan games" and thus doesn't feel any good. For a title with that pricepoint, I expect more than 4f of animation per character.

the thing is, this game is what all fighting games strive to be. a one on one match where both players are trying to get in each other's heads and use their opponents weaknesses against them. its one of the most well balanced fighters ever, and the humor is well placed as much as the homages to the characters themselves.

its the epitome of "easy to learn, difficult to master"

Balanced? I've been hearing from people on SRK that this game is heavy on counter-picks and I had a convo on PSN with a player who believes that Dr. Shoals is a cheap OP character.

I forgot about the counterpick stuff. and even then, it all depends on the player. and the amount of counterpicks also shows that theres no "best character" in the game. (aside from Kenny, who is impossible to counterpick)

And I dont think Shaols is cheap. she has plenty of counterpicks (like S-kill)

I went into it really wanting to enjoy it, but I just didn't. It feels really disjointed, and goddamn is it ugly. If they'd just kept it as a $2 dive vs kick experience, I could see the appeal, but as a lulzy FGC in-joke? It's not a good enough game to justify $10.

I'm enjoying it a lot since i feel its introducing me into footsies and mind games since i dont really have to worry about nailing my mechanics, and im really enjoying being able to think in the actual match and out playing an opponent due to proper positioning or ability usage.

As a begginner ive been even able to beat friends often who are already quite experienced in "real" fighting games.

I admit the art is a bit too simplistic but as (i feel) an introduction to fighting game fundamentals it feels pretty great.

I really don't mind the overly simplistic art. If a game looks great but plays bad whats the point?

It's like, there's this metagame behind it that is so hard to explain, but the more you play the more you start to feel that there's this complexity behind the simplistic idea.

It feels like one of those games where it is mostly benign but people claim it to be a "you just don't get it".

depends on how you use benign. it is heavily approachable. but when you get to the more complex things like Kick-factors and specials.

"He who fights with Foot Dives should look to it that he himself does not become a Foot Dive. And when you gaze long into a Divekick the Divekick also gazes into you."

Since when were you into Skullgirls Uncle Sensei?

You know me, I'm into Free Shit.

I have only one thing to say.

Also Sanoblaze you should totally put this image in the OP.

I saw this when it was first posted. I'm still glad Pat won and put Woolie in the "Shame Car".

Might wanna put that in spoilers. Some people may not have watched that Scrublords yet.

I'm surprisingly terrible at Divekick. I wasn't expected to be amazing at it, especially since Skullgirls is the only Fighting Game I've ever truly been skilled at, but I am currently running a win/loss of 3/16 for Ranked Matches.

It is still a really fun game, regardless. The jokes are funny, the references all work, and the gameplay is well done. Plus, the Scrublords tournament for the game was the hypest thing ever!

The fact that we're expected not to spoil what happens in a Super Best Friends video shows how amazing they are.

I used to think that DiveKick would have been way better as just Dive+Kick, no kick meter etc, but now that I've played it, I like the extra chars and the special moves. They actually do add quite a bit to the game.

But yeah, I think it's going to be pretty counter-pick heavy. Not that that's a problem (see ST).

God damn do I love Kick. I love him so much.

Just gonna throw this out there, as someone definitely not a part of the FGC until I involved myself with Skullgirls, I personally feel that Divekick alienates people like me from from it and the FGC the more I see of it less I want to get involved with the FCG as a whole and go back to loving fighting games on my own like it was before Skullgirls (/foreveralone :( ). That being said if it was just the dolla game of just Dive & Kick without all this self-referancal, trying to take hype to the next level, ect. I would be more interested in it but as it is now, definitely not. (A message from someone who plays quite a few fighting games but never watches them or competes in them or know anyone else who plays them out side of this forum [if you consider this "knowing people"])

I must say that you are in the minority from my experience. I have shown dive kick to a lot of people, and managed to get my brother (who never even TOUCHED a fighting game) to play it at UFGT9, he thoroughly enjoyed it. They have all responded very enthusiastically. The inside jokes are irrelevant when you are playing the game, if anything they add a certain quirky tone when you don't know the references. It may alienate people like you, but only if you let it. You can just enjoy the incredibly deep and exciting gameplay, but if you let the largely irrelevant inside jokes affect your enjoyment of the mechanics that's your choice. The mechanics of this game are inherently inclusive, which is pretty much the opposite of skullgirls.

Also, I personally don't know every single reference being made, but even the ones I don't understand are still funny to me, just not in the same way for those who understand them.

There are only two real problems I have with this game. The lobbies are ass and the game menu only uses two buttons. I don't even mind the latter, but its a matter of convenience for others. The former is annoying as fuck though.

I heard that the lobbies are getting better. especially if you increase your ping threshold to 250. even in a slow connection the fights are as responsive as they are offline.

and for every fighting game reference, theres always some other reference in there as well. this game has tons of fresh prince references I'm surprised I havent run into "breafmints" yet.

Does anyone still play this? I just got the game 2 weeks ago. So far, I like Markman and possibly Redacted.
I love this game, its just everyone would rather be the snooty "I cant do sick frame cancel combos" instead of noticing how it cuts the complexity of fighters out yet still keeps the competitive play in it.

BECAUSE GOD FORBID THERES A UNIVERSALLY PICK UP AND PLAY FIGHTER!

Well, it's not just that, I mean it's fun, but there's a lot in other fighters that people find fun that's not in this game.

as for me, I'dd play, but I don't have a copy. This game is a blast.

I'm still kinda not sold on this game, to tell the truth. Definitely waiting on a price drop.

Don't take anything I say as a genuine attack on the game, because I'm just speaking of my personal preferences as well as some things I've noticed about the game which may be completely off and of my imagination entirely. I'm also very open to changing my mind here, because I've been hearing very mixed opinions from different people who's tastes I generally trust.

I know you can say "it captures the core reading focused style of fighting games with only 2 moves!", but I feel that the very fact that it pairs down fighting game mechanics so much is a point against it (for me at least). One of the things I love about fighting games are the vast number of options, the movement, the freedom to come up with your own play style, the fact that it has infinite depth but you're actually fighting and not just moving pieces on a board. If I wanted to play a fighting game without movement and with only 2 moves...I would just not play fighting games lol.

Also one of my favorite things in any genre of game is freedom of mobility. A sense of movement is very important to me.

My other issue, and one that has kept one of my friends away from the game as well, is that it looks very "random". The simplicity, small number of options, and ultra fast nature of the game seems to make a lot of choices less weighty, so it becomes a lot harder to read opponents. I see a lot of good, smart players seem to get "randomed out" constantly. And furthermore, a lot of my friends who DID get ultra enthusiastic about the game at launch, dropped it nearly a weak later due to a seeming lack of depth and staying power.

It seems to me like a fun game to watch, and a decent party game to crack out once in a while, but I don't see it going much beyond that. Am I wrong here?

It's not a "play 6 hours a day, every day" game, but it's definitely a blast to relax by every once in a while. I didn't get most references without looking them up but it didn't bother me none. The humor within the game is on an acceptable level between funny and cheesy even for someone who's not in the know. How much background do you need to understand what your defeated character means by screaming "Controller laaaag..."

In theory the only moves are dive and kick. In practice, where each char dives and kicks differently and has special meter-dependent and meter-independent abilities, it provides enough variety to not get boring as quickly as you'd think.

Lobbies with strangers might work, but personally I think it's best played with a friend, with voice chat on and a beer on the desk.

Side note, I dislike comments like "It's fun, but not worth a cent". If it's fun, it's worth your cash. Someone spent time and money to create it in the first place.

All that being said, if you ever feel like diving and kicking, I'm game!

The game is actually pretty fun against other people.

The art is awful, however.
