The shitty thing about this is

    >Go to Combo Breaker
    >High turnout
    >Can't afford a second trip to EVO so soon after
    >Low EVO turnout because can't go to both
    >"No one showed up to play SG at EVO it must be dead"

And then? Then EVO won't put it into their lineup again, as they never will anyway. Why care?
There are plenty majors who support SG, why are people trying to make the ONE happen that will never happen (and which has never given a shit about us)?

Honestly Isa has a point. While Evo is like "the grand finals of the world" (as most people like to call it), it's not like the end all be all of majors.

While we have had people like markman and such help us out, Evo honestly never really is going to give a shit about us, ever.

May as well get high numbers at a major that does actually really care, like Combo Breaker.

I say at least try to attend this EVO since Markman is trying to make up for last year. After that just focus on other majors for the rest of SG's lifespan.

I think that's a slight bit unfair, since even though Smash had good turnouts for locals/majors on their own at that time, it was pretty much off the radar as a Fighting Game by most of the FGC back then. Since Melee had its great showing at EVO 2013, it's pretty much stayed the course and everyone has noticed how large and consistent of a presence Smash has been. While I agree with your point, I don't think Smash specifically is an example of that.

To be fair, I don't think whether or not someone likes a game for personal reasons should be a factor for choosing a game to be at the tournament? If anything, running a tournament for a game you didn't like, previously or presently, would make you the bigger man IMO. The alternative is someone disregarding a game at a major purely because they don't like it, which is the vibe I get when I hear stuff about CEO/Jebailey and SG (regardless if that may be his feelings or not).

I don't think that's necessarily the case, and I don't think I've ever specifically seen people say that. The EVO numbers for 3D games like Tekken haven't been high in the past couple of years, with them getting more numbers in Final Round cause its their "Big Tournament", but I haven't really seen cries that their scene is dead any more than Marvel. If we try to build up bigger numbers at different events and get it regularly higher than another EVO game, and then they give us the "Well why did you never try to show up at EVO?" card, then maybe we could call bullshit on that. But atm I can't think of a case of a game that's had big numbers outside of EVO that EVO specifically rejected for something like not having a large EVO side tourney turnout.

Unfortunately, I much rather go to EVO where I plan to play multiple games and can't afford both. If they were on opposite ends of the year then maaaaybe I could work something out.

I liked this because i actually made someone quit sg because of invincible h bomber salt when vanilla came out.

    On topic:

I wasnt expecting sg as a main game, but i still think sg has a chance of being an evo main game, one day.

I do think it will take a rebranding at this point in time (sg 2 or whatever), as well as needing sg players to actually come out and play the game at tournies.

I mean the year Melty got in was the last 'true' Evo to me that didn't feel tainted by the need for publicity or using the tournament as a giant commercial. Previous Evos ran prior versions of a game when the game wasn't readily available to the majority. This was argued incessantly because it usually fell upon GG's shoulders or a game that was only accessible through importing.

Now, oh look Injustice is in. MKX is in. T7 is in.

Well whatever, you guys go nuts with the side tournament hype.

It sucks that Skullgirls will always be a side game but Madcatz is offering real support and stream time. Blowing off EVO is the worst thing the community could do.

But Melee is the only game in the Evo 2015 lineup that isn't an inferior/unreleased sequel to another game...

Madcatz/MarkMan is being awesome, but I'm not sure I agree with your sentiment. Showing support for tournaments that support the game is IMO the best thing people can do - that's the key thing, is the tournament itself supporting the game.

You know, I always wondered if SRK would be willing to write an article similar to UNIEL's "So, what's Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late like, Anyway?" once Robo-Fortune comes out. I would imagine those guys would have some good things to say about SG by that time. I also wondered what it would be like if MikeZ went back onto to UltrachenTV to re-describe SG once Robo-Fortune comes out. It'll be like describing Skullgirls 1.7!

And speaking of tournaments themselves supporting the game, take a look at this picture real quick: https://twitter.com/NorthwestMajors/status/558143601239404544/photo/1 (EDIT: NINJA'D)

Okay, on topic: it's really important to support tournaments that support the game. You don't know how close it can be sometimes. The Frosty Faustings Skullgirls tournament last weekend almost didn't happen. The higher ups at that event were motioning to get rid of Skullgirls because it apparently "didn't bring the numbers". But shout outs to Atomic Collider. He saw us, and he saw how much we wanted the game because we supported it. He fought to keep Skullgirls in, and we showed up. We beat out KI and Injustice, and we tied with P4AU. I'm pretty sure we can come back next year.

On the other hand the only way to get your game into a tournament you want your game to be at... is to go to the tournament. I feel this is STARTING to work with BigE. Maybe something good's gonna come from it soon. Besides money and vacation time, I don't see why we can't support the tournaments that respect us, and the tournaments that are still skeptical. Actually, money and vacation time... shit that's pretty important.

I agree that its important to support tournaments that support the game, that is common sense.

However not supporting the biggest fighting game tournament in the world... Is a huge mistake because the biggest fighting game tournament in the world already supports skullgirls as well as the entire fighting game genre, just by being what it is.
If the fgc in itself grows, then by default sg grows as well. If not in players, at the very least in prestige as a community.

The only reason i could see anyone deserting evo is if evo came out and flat out said that no sg side tournament can happen. Or if sg is the only fighting game you like or play and have zero interest in any other fighting games.

Me personally im a fan of the fgc first and skullgirls is more like priority 2 or 3 after that, even if it is my main game, which it is.

The biggest fighting game tournament in the world was one of my least favorite events outside of the tournament itself. Combo breaker is going to have a 24/7 venue, supports SG as one of their games, and will cost me like 500 dollars less to go too. Hope to see people there!

I really REALLY REALLY want to go to NWM7 but I really don't have much of a choice in attending any US Major this year. Look y'all, I know feelings are hurt and the SGC deserves better than some of the treatment it has received from the Evo organizers. That said, Combo Breaker's decision to include Skullgirls sounds awesome and Madcatz/Markman's outreach to the community is also awesome but I wish it wasn't becoming an Either-Or situation of doing CB and Evo. Madcatz is like a sponsor and they seem to be down to have Skullgirls under their tent this year at Evo. Having a business with as much political clout in the FGC as they do reaching out to help host our game at a tournament is a big deal matter how you look at it. On the other hand, the spiritual successor to UFGT has also decided to recognize the existence of our community at their tournament.

Either way, at the end of the day, the SGC will have a hype side tourney with a stage and stream time so pick your poison I suppose. But I digress: I personally wouldn't take this "either-or" decision lightly but then again, -I- personally won't be able to participate unless @Mike_Z is willing to pay for my plane ticket =3 (I love you, man but I'd probably still have to turn you down) but I would strongly advise those with the ability to attend these venues, especially if you can only do one, to choose carefully. At the end of the day I'm just a guy that tries to help organize locals for my community's scene and will still love all y'all no matter the decision the SGC makes this coming Summer and I hope to see all y'all in person sometime next year no matter majors will have us.

Keits has stepped down from running tourneys, but Rick (thehadou) was his right hand man for the past few UFGTs. Rick is the one running Combo Breaker. I believe the brackets will be done by the same person as well.
    ________________________

I know Divekick is a joke game to most people but I think it is a pretty interesting example here. The people who care for Divekick and play it consistently is dedicated group of online players. For 2014, they decided that UFGTX should be the main tourney. UFGTX was giving main game status, stream time, and the Midwest was a strong region for the game in general.

A lot of these specifically online warriors came out for it and didn't go to EVO. Divekick ended up having like 100+ entrants at UFGTX and like 50+ at EVO. Part of the entrant disparity is that Divekick as a main game has a lot of people just throwing in their 10 dollars since it can be a fun thing to do, while at EVO you had to actively hunt out the guy running the side tourney. But as a general thing, most of the players who specifically cared about Divekick didn't make it out to EVO. I believe the plan this year is to do the same with Combo Breaker.

Divekick is never going to get main game status at EVO, probably deservedly so. But the idea of choosing a different tourney as your main tourney is definitely possible, even without years of it happening naturally, like APEX for Smash or Final Round for Tekken.

I do think in Skullgirls' case that this would maybe have to be a thing LabZero or at least @Mike_Z would have to officially take a stance on for it to take hold, though. The way it is now, it kinda seems like it might just split the value of each tourney. As an example, if @dekillsage only goes to Combo Breaker but @sonicfox only goes to EVO, you're left with two good tourneys but a lot of questions.

That won't work unless you can convince 100,000 people not to watch. Plus, encouraging negativity is never the way to go.
Better to watch the games you like and encourage other people to do the same.

And SHOW UP TO THINGS. That "Frosty Faustings [...] We beat out KI and Injustice, and we tied with P4AU." is important, if you consider SGinEvo important. There really should be a list of SG entrants at tournaments this year vs other Evo games, if someone wants to be that meticulous. SG still won't be next year's unreleased games, but it helps make a case. :^)

I uh. If you really can only go to one thing this year...honestly, I'd make it Combo Breaker provided it's anything like UFGT.
(Fair warning - Chicago is not Vegas, so if part of enjoying Evo for you is being in Vegas, there's that to consider.)
Totally ignoring which games were main games / how expensive each city is / all that junk, UFGTX was a hella better experience than Evo 2014 was. It ran on time, brackets were well scheduled and neat, ALL the games had dedicated stations for ALL the days, there were multiple official streams and stages and tons of things to do, and there was way more time to play games at the venue besides just playing in the tournament even on finals day...which, let's face it, is what you're there for. So unless you want to go specifically to be at Evolution-the-world's-largest-FGC-gathering, will be meeting lots of friends who only go to Evo, or think you can win whichever games you're entering for the prizes, I'd pick Combo Breaker.
