Final Fantasy

I have a soft spot for 4, but i also love 9 and 6.

4 is pretty great.

I mean it's kind of cheesy and cliche at times, but for it's time it was pretty amazing as a narrative. I think it still holds up pretty well today for the sense of scope in the plot. From that Star Wars style scrolling text narration that poses a mystery from the get go (why the monsters are acting up, why everyone wants the crystals) after Cecil first goes to bed, to the final reprise of "The Red Wings" theme in the final dungeon. Definitely nails the sense of "epic".

4 is great until you realize that Kain basically gets brainwashed because he got super buttmad over being friendzoned.
Even then, it's still pretty good, even with all the fake out deaths and stuff

to me, I think my favorite part of 4 is how it has the best tagline of any Final Fantasy which I have seen.

"Bid farewell to your bloodstained past"

I am currently playing FF X/X-2 Remaster on PS4. I am liking it so far, but when I played Blitzball for the first couple of times, I was frustrated with getting my butt handed to me and I made a new file a couple of days ago to get the Jecht Shot. It took that, three overtimes, and stupid luck that helped me win the finals yesterday.

man, I hated blitsball. I was a stupid kid back in the day so I could never do it.
I would always do dumb shit like have the goalie be a player because he had bigger stats in some parts.

i am a blitzball now that I've grown up and people still kick me all the time

X was my favorite so far, with XIII-2 being a close second.

X may have jumped the shark in some ways, but it did have a really unique world (the tropical ocean dominated world is something you don't see too often in fantasy) and a nice mystery driving the plot.

I don't think anyone actually liked Blitzball though.

I liked BlitzBall! I just hated how our default team was actually as garbage as the story said they were.

FFX is worst FF I've played.

They just realized after the masterpiece that is FFIX they couldn't do any better so they just made worst.

Apart from the stupid grindfest that is the post game of FFX I quite like the game.
I agree FFIX is a masterpiece, though. Except for a few questionable choices they made while programming the game (making buffs last based on the Spirit stat, letting them run out during attack animations, making 65535 a hard cap for monster HP, making Ozma not even have that cap...)

You cant have a masterpiece when you have Tabuu ripping quotes from Yoda as the last boss.

Zidane is really bad in the latter half of the game

That was actually something the localization added that's not in the original script.

How is having a guaranteed 9999 damage skill bad?

your damage output doesn't mean anything when you're a poorly written character

so after playing FF4 again, it kinda has become my favorite Finbal Fantasy.
again.

mainly Rydia.
best Final Fantasy girl IMO.
you kill her mom, blow up her village, and then you try to kill her.
so she summons FUCKING TITAN TO SPLIT THE EARTH IN A TANTRUM!
and does she stick around crying?
nope.
she deals with it.
even tells Edward to fucking man up.
even has the best theme.
I love Rydia.
I love all the FF4 characters.
even the jobber Tellah.

around disc 3

Reviving this because Final Fantasy XIV was $5 with the Humble Bundle, I'm honestly surprised at how good the story is, even if you need to saw around 20+ levels for it to start getting really good.
Already planning to get Heavensward.

strat: throw rocks, yell at people

my kind of character

It's probably mostly nostalgia, but FF12 is easily my favourite. Liked the plot a decent amount, liked the battle system, and thought the game was absolutely GORGEOUS. It looked like a PS3 game on the PS2 imo.

Second is 4. I need to play 6 and finish 5 still. Gilgamesh is still bae of course.

Ramza's trailer! Look at all those rocks you can throw. What a cool guy.

11:00 and 34:45 for new gameplay

Looks like it's even MORE of a character action game with weapon selection like DMC4 style switching. And some warp stealth killing.
When's Final Fantasy by Platinum Games?

Each FF game seems to be less fantasy than the last, with FFXIV being the most fantasy.
So long as there's like some conduit for the "fantasy" part I'm fine with this approach.

Personally as long as the gameplay is good, it's good. As long as SquareEnix is still willing to make traditional rpgs, then changing the formula every now and then is good imo.

But yes they have been doing it a ton lately.
