Focusing Community Turnout at SG Tourney Events

Just a heads up that if you want anything added to the list on the front page I'll need to know within the next few days, as after that I'll be away from my main PC for about a month.

So what should I write for it? AFAIK there's no promised pot bonus or main stage.

There isn't? I just assumed there was with how everyone was talking about it.

afaik we have main stage, pot bonus hasn't been announced yet but I've heard they're announcing more info on CEOtaku now that CEO proper is over so we'll find out pretty soon I think

So a topic I want to bring up that I want peoples input on... Big E Tournaments...

Is NEC/Winter Brawl/Upcoming Summer Jam on the radar this year for us? Or are we pursuing other EC tournaments and focusing on them more? (CEOtaku, GUTS, etc)

So far for USA tournaments of 2016-2017 I got...

2016
August: Summer Jam?
September: ECT?
October: CEOtaku
November: GUTS4
December: NEC?

2017
January: Frosty Faustings
February: Winter Brawl??
March: FR?
April: NWM
May: Combo Breaker***
June: CEO?
July: EVO?

ECT is doable just because of tristate region I want to hear feedback on that.

FR, CEO, and EVO, I just put there to fill space. I really doubt anyone is really going to be pushing for these 3 in terms of SKULLGIRLS majors. Would like to hear input on it.

The Big E tournaments are what we need to discuss. All of them? Just NEC? None of them? What should we be focusing on this year as a community.

Personally I'm limited by vacation time. I'm using everything I have left on CEOtaku and Revolution. Defend The North and GUTS 4 I can only go to because they're close enough to me that I can drive down the day before and leave Sunday, using no vacation time. So Summer Jam/NEC/etc are off the table for me even if I was interested (which I'm not).

My understanding is that just about everyone is sick of Big E's tournaments. I have not been able to attend any Big E events, myself, but I heard the sentiment from so many people at CB, that I consider it a widely-held opinion. This entire discussion is about where we can gather to get the level of attention, play, and pageantry we want, so I believe an EC focus on GUTS and CEOtaku is the best choice.

Frosty is also good call, imo. It's gotten progressively better for us each of the last few years I've been, so I think we should double down and make it a thing.

I can vouch for Frosty Faustings, I've been twice and it's been a good tournament both times. Also it's two days only which means I only have to use one vacation day.
best believe I'm comin' for that beer

If I could get a second job, I won't need vacation time to be able to travel. That's what's kinda holding me back, money issues at the moment.

Ill be aiming for CEOtaku as highest priority for potentially the final major of the year.

That's the one I've heard about constantly all year as the big end year one.

Its super cross continent for me so I'll probably be too broke for another one.

@keninblack, in answer to your overall question: I am now of the mindset that Big E's can be -- for lack of any other way of saying this -- overlooked. I say that fully aware of all the sacrifices & legwork I put in. E just can't keep his promises, be them to me or the community. Far as I can tell, ECT is up in the air, but I wouldn't hold my breath. With Joe's sudden FGCelebrity, there's a likely chance that SFV is going to strongarm a few games off the radar to make space. I'm with @Kai & @mcpeanuts on this one: focus on GUTS & CEOtaku. If you happen to be attending a Big E event (more than likely for another game) and you round up enough people, KPB will gladly work with you. Otherwise, Philly has become an SG deadzone.

As for DTN, I've explained to the Lead Organizer that simply bringing KPB on to stream does not magically guarantee you SG numbers. This information has been consistently ignored. What he will learn this weekend is that attendance for SG in the future will depend on how he handles things THIS weekend. If he gets petulant because the Red Sea didn't part his event didn't get 60+ signups, then that'll most likely be the nail in his coffin. But, there's always the silm chance that he will treat those who do show up like actual human beings. In that scenario, that may be room to discuss adding DTN to the East Coast Itinerary.

Anyways, that's just my two cents...

Don't think I can manage getting to ceotaku but it sounds like a good event to push. I'll try though. GUTS4 also has my vote.

As someone who lives in Philly, this saddens me greatly, since I'm barely going to be able to go to Combo Breaker next year, since my dad is helping me out and coming with me. It really sucks that there's really no alternative near me that is easy for me to get to.

the best i can do is be in spirit. I understand why we should move away from BigE just... idk my range is super limited and going to Philly is like the only thing I can do without sweating bullets over transportation plans. [Not having a car sure sucks...]

So this is what it looks like now with it trimmed down.

Looks more doable for everyone?

When was KiT again? I believe their TOs literally posted here asking if anyone was interested in getting anything started with them. I remember that back then, the SGC had a bit too much on their plate so nobody really bit on that opportunity.

I can make any of the Big E events but I'll really only go if others want to as well.
With how inconsistent Big E is on the topic of Skullgirls- not paying out people dating back to Summer Jam 2015, forgetting the pot bonus at TFC to not giving out medals for NEC16 is just embarrassing honestly. He said he was heavily considering giving SG main stage at NEC17 but I believe that time has passed.
I will be attending CEOtaku, GUTS4, Frosty Faustings, and CB 2017. Of course if we decide to go to something new in 2017 I will be there as well. I'll also be going to TFC as it's a quick drive for me so if any North Carolina players wanna show up we can play.

KIT is pretty far out as far as Midwest/southern SGC is concerned, and it's super close timewise to FF. If I had a car I could make it to both, but I don't think that'll be the case in January so KIT probably won't be big on the radar for us IMO.

I've been going to an arcade in the Nashville area the past few weeks trying to drum up some interest for SG. There's enough people that we could likely have a side tournament at KIT, but with it being so close to Frosty I doubt many people would travel for it. There's also MWC in June, but again, it's right after Combo Breaker.

best believe I'm comin' for that beer

How is that different from any event we, as a community, go to?

I personally never plan to attend a Big E event (IMO this should be the lineup for this/next year:

October/September - CEOtaku
Florida is a great place that time of year. Broken Loose has the maneuvers to make SG big here. Do it.

November - GUTS 4
GUTS 3 was my all time favorite Skullgirls event. Would love to go again but probably won't have the money (plus Blazblue probably won't be a huge event there).

January - Frosty Faustings
Positive responses from people who attended. People who care about smaller communities run the event. Probably going to this.

May - Combo Breaker
Self Explanatory.

June - CEO
There's a huge gap between Combo Breaker and the likely next big event (CEOtaku). I don't think people are interested in Summer Jam or EVO for (valid) reasons. That leaves CEO and ECT(?). Can't speak for the latter but I've heard good things about CEO, it's worth supporting, and i'm sure after CEOtaku kicked ass last year and will probably kick ass this year, Jebailey would be happy to have us. It IS pretty soon after CB, however.

CEOtaku, GUTS, Frosty again, repeat

The main thing is that because of Combo Breaker people KNOW that Skullgirls players will show up when dedicated to it. I think it's better to have fewer events with 60+ entrants (Which this game gets easily now, crazy compared to struggling to get 30 back in 2014) than to be spread out. Even if it means less events for SG overall.

A mini major would be sick

I've got one of those

6 Majors a year? That feels about right. Wish they were spread out just a little more, just for even spread, but I like the lineup. I'm also super happy that GUTS is on everyone's radar. Also, going to try to make Frosty. I keep hearing good things.

I'm against putting DTN as an SG event EVER, by the way.

Not to mention, KPB has told the organizers m u l t i p l e t i m e s that they were not going to reach 60 SG entrants and that they could actively expect 20-30.

This has the makings of a disaster.

I mean yeah. That's the SGC's fault, not DTN's. If anything it makes me reconsider if I want to keep being involved with this community.

They wanted 60 people at the event. They would have done this regardless if we had less than 30 people preregistered.
They want at least 30 people from out-of-the-area.

That's not feasible for this event.

Apparently even 20 isn't realistic cause people who live an hour away don't fucking show up.

No one who lives an hour away wants to pay more than you would pay for a big e event for a local tournament. Fuck outta here with that.

A $500 pot bonus is not incentive for people to show up, only the top 3 would care for it, and even without them having said anything we (or at least I) knew well that we weren't going to get it unless we got a big amount of entrants.

If they said "we will add $250 to the pot for every 32 entrants we get" then fine. That's possible. Having months notice doesn't matter when combo breaker was in the middle of that time frame, and let me tell you, that was not a cheap trip for me. I didn't even break even this year, and I made a lot of money getting into the finals.

I have 0 interest in DTN, and the only reason I'm going is to help my friends run the nintendo tournaments. If you got to read the conversations we've had with the organizer, you'd think this event is a shady joke.
