What are some of your favorite video games that has been forgotten or never got the glory it should of?

One of mine would be SimCity 3000. A lot of people say it was never as good as its younger brother SimCity 2000. Now that the SimCity franchise came to it's unfortunate end, SimCity 3000 is often forgotten about. I still even play it every once in awhile.

What do you guys think?

If we're talking about literally forgotten games, there was a neat arcade game I played eons ago at my friend's orthodontist that I have never seen again. It was a top-down adventure game, almost like a Zelda style dungeon crawler, and you were playing as an Indiana Jones type guy trying to complete all of the different rooms. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please throw me a title so I might finally be able to get this off of my Forgotten List.

As far as under-appreciated games though, I think one game that deserved some more attention was Sunsoft's UFouria on NES. It was a cool Metroid-style platformer where you could actively switch between characters with different attributes while exploring a fairly large and diverse map. Considering its scope for an NES title, I'd even argue that it does "Metroid" a little better than Metroid did. It's just too bad that, like many of Sunsoft's games, it never really managed to become the genre staple that it should have been.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors for SNES is kinda the best

I never finished the game because those Giant Underground Worms use to destroy me!

Nier is a game that I feel is super underrated. Glad that it's getting a sequel, and being developed by Platinum Games as well. I'm ready for another Yoko Taro roller-coaster of emotions.

Would StarTropics count? It's a Zelda-inspired dungeon crawler where you play as a boy named Mike Jones and hit stuff with a yoyo and a various array of other things, travelling all across the islands to try and find your uncle who went missing.

Relatively good length, a fair challenge, and a reeeeeeally good soundtrack.

Okay, absolutely no one is going to get this at all, but this is one of the most underrated games ever.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

Okay here me out, yes the movie was the worst in the trilogy but the game was SO MUCH FUN, i mean i cant even begin to explain all there was to do in that game, it was the best Transformers games ever made. No other game was able to do what it did.
So we all played with toys right? some point in our life whether it was Lego's or Transformers we all had those simplistic times of rolling around plastic toys in the grass or sand. This game brought that feeling back somehow, no other game has done that for me, each battle felt like picking up your favorite character and just having the ultimate toy, combine that with 6-12 online multiplayer in a little free-roam city, its just a blast.
Each character had there own combos and everything, so much work was put into the game, no really look it up, its too old to get into now but just for the heck of it check this game out, what i've said is only a fraction of what made this game amazing.

Total Distortion was a weird adventure game about creating music videos from a guitar-hell dimension.

Then there was Dark Colony that I found in a CD pack once. A really old RTS game that almost nobody ever talks about. Was pretty fun though.

Psychonauts that game is fucking awesome.

...

Speaking of forgotten games, does anyone remember the Legacy of Kain games? Before it turned into a TF2 knock off?

But to be honest the only game I played from that series is soul reaver 2.

Featuring Raziel from the Legacy of Kain series.

The Adventure of Little Ralph. Originally designed for some home computer I don't remember, the game got switched to the PSX late in development which led to a bunch of delays. It came out when absolutely no one cared about minimalist 2D platformers (it's arcade style, like 2 hours long and heavily score-based) and didn't even see a release outside Japan. It's a shame because I think it's a really solid game that never gets mentioned anywhere.

Years ago(2007/2008), unsatisfied with low performance pc, and lack of money, i started to look for some torrents of old games, and i came across a game that made me happy for hours and hours.

Star Wars: Jedi Knight- Jedi Academy.

I loved that game, the lightsaber fights, the force mechanics, the stages, the fact that you can make custom builds, and the setting of the game, being Jaden Korr and a Luke's student, i never touched the game on the hard difficulty and i never made the choice of going to the dark side, i will probably buy this game to see if i still like it.

Double Fine games in general are fantastic! Psychonaughts especially just oozes personality.

I have the Legacy of Kain games on steam, but I still have yet to finish them.

I have the original Soul Reaver on Dreamcast. A friend of mine is a total nut for the series, and followed the story religiously. It's worth looking into the original game (Blood Omen) and the rest of Soul Reaver. A shame they never finished the story (and that Blood Omen 2 was written by a different team who missed the point).

I do like the ambitious, metaphysical plot of the series, the Shakespearean dialogue, and the ambiguous characterization. The plot is a bit too convoluted though, could have used some trimming and editing IMO. The games have a charm and magic that you don't see in a lot of big rpg's these days though, especially western ones.

Little Ralph = yes, so good.

But isnt the Legacy of Kain series made by crystal dynamics, a western game studio?

But yeah I always liked the settings in the legacy of Kain series and both Kain and Raziel.

Kain is a cool anti hero/ villain in that in the end of blood omen 1 instead of sacrificing himself to save Nosgoth he's like "naw fuck that I'll let Nosgoth be taken over by vampire assholes and become king of the vampire assholes."

And Raziel was one of the lieutenants and he was SO COOL that he was the only vampire to have gotten wings and Kain was like "man that's bullshit" because he never got his wings, and he was Raziel's higher up. So he betrayed Raziel, ripped his wings off, and left him for dead and Raziel was like "Im gonna get my fucking revenge watch." And Kain was like "AWWW RAZIEL YOU'RE STUPID!"

(Im probably got some stuff wrong since it's been a long time I read up on the Legacy of Kain lore.)

Plus I really enjoyed Raziel design, simple but visual intricate in that he looked fairly humanoid but his skin is blue, his eyes are pure white, and he was so fucked up his hands and feet turned into weird claw things.

And when bleach fans ask me who's my favorite soul reaver is, I say Raziel, then they look confused, and then I tell them bleach sucks.

Iggy's Reckin Balls counts, right?
This game takes forever just to beat one world. But the multiplayer was really fun, there's lots of levels and characters to pick from.
Sadly, nobody ever liked playing this with me.

Yeah, that's what I meant. The kind of creativity and style in the game really puts stuff like the newer Bioware games or the endless parade of Elder Scroll's to shame IMO. Definitely one of my favorite Dark Fantasies in the medium.

Yeah, of course the plot goes so deeper then that on both fronts, heheh.

Also damn, this is cool.

Aside from all that, I'd also suggest Rastan Saga as a great forgotten game. It was basically Taito's take on Conan the Barbarian as a hack and slash platformer. Lovely sprite art, music, gameplay, and atmosphere. It's been pointed out that the backstory in the manual and promo material is probably truer to Robert E Howard's Conan thematically then the Arnold movie.

Sadly the sequel was quite bad (worse gameplay, worse music that didn't fit the mood as much, awful sprite work compared to the original), and the third game was a okay (iirc) beat em up. The original was a real classic, but the series went wrong and it ended up forgotten after that.

Whenever asked about hidden jems in games, I always take it as an opportunity to plug Resonance of Fate.
Tho I'm not entirely sure it can be considered "forgotten", it's only last gen and it still gets mentions in Top 5 lists of Ridiculously Hard RPG's or Craziest Crafting Systems in Games (seriously tho, google Resonance of Fate weapon customization it's bonkers), and the characters were in PxZ for the people who played that.

But, like, yeah, I like the story I like the characters, the gameplay is unique, albeit it's uniquely hard as fucking balls, but it's unique.

If you're into RPG's, I recommend it. If you're not, maybe don't. Maybe just look up cutscenes on youtube or something because as someone who's never been good at RPG's it is all just torture. Continuous torture.

^^^A friend of mine picked ROF up a while back. Reminded me I need to look into that one.

I'm not entirely sure if other people would agree with me, but a forgotten game that I really enjoyed was Brave Fencer Musashi. (The original one for the PS1, not the remake/sequel/whatever for the PS2.)

Basically, you play as Musashi, a young samurai (as opposed to... Y'know, a fencer! ...But whatever.) who has been summoned to another world to save it from destruction, and it's your job to and get back home!

The game is a 3D semi-top-down hack-n-slash with RPG elements and has some puzzles sprinkled throughout to boot!
One of the main gimmicks is a special sword you receive early on in the game that is able to suck the power from enemies and give you unique abilities pertaining to what enemy was drained, which works on nearly every enemy you face! (Not including bosses.)

I only played it a long time ago when I was a kid until recently thanks to the internet!
Like I said before, I'm not sure if the public would consider this game as "forgotten" or not, but I haven't heard all that much about it without actively searching for it.

If any of you think you would like it, be my guest and check it out! I really think that this game needs more love, but make sure it's the one for the PS1, NOT the PS2 game of the same name! I haven't played that one at all and I've heard less than nice things about that version...

Jurassic Park Operation Genesis was a pretty sweet sim game.

Actually, that does remind me,
there's a PS1 game that I heard of recently that I had just never heard of before. I'm pretty sure the game itself is lackluster, but the concept, well,
I'll let the game's intro do the talking for me.

Hmm, yeah, I guess I'd consider Kain series and Brave Fencer as "forgotten games", but mainly because those franchises have been dormant for so long. Most people I know that grew up with PSX still have fond memories of those games. Soul Reaver was definitely a big deal when it came out.

However, I do remember Brave Fencer having a pretty rough release, even though it was highly anticipated by Square fans. Problem was, it was a middle-budget title releasing around the time that some similar, really polished games were showing up like Alundra, Megaman Legends, and Star Ocean 2. N64 was also hitting its stride then, so when Musashi finally released in the States, a lot of people were already saving up for Ocarina of Time instead. Most of my friends didn't have time to check out Musashi until much later, when it started showing up in bargain bins. Really sucks when that kinda thing happens to a game.

It also reflects on how tricky it was for kids to juggle multiple games back then. You couldn't just throw $10/$20 at a game and store it on your hard drive for later, or watch a Youtube vid of it if you weren't sure about it. If you wanted to try out a new game, you had to hope it would be at the rental store, and if it was, then you had to hope it was in enough supply so that you didn't need to convince your parents to rent it out for multiple weeks. Otherwise, you or a friend had to be able to buy the game right away, or just hope Toys R Us still had it on the shelf by Christmas time. For a lot of kids, a game like Musashi was just difficult to find, and expensive to try.

Thankfully, we weren't really gambling with our money then, because there was so much good shit out there to play! It was a little rough, but those were fun times for sure.

Soul Nomad and the World Eaters was a great SRPG by NIS, the makers of Disgaea and Witch And The Hundred Knight. I'm surprised it isn't talked about more. Gig is a super popular character as far as DLC for the Disgaea games go but his game was never ported to PSN. For that matter, Phantom Brave seems to be lost in the dust as well. A lot of NIS' older series kinda got swept under the rug. Makai Kingdom barely got western release, and a buncha other games just kinda poofed onto the market for PS2 and disappeared. So far only Disgaea and La Pucelle Tactics have been made available on PSN and such, and that saddens me. NIS' old SRPG are all mostly golden and deserve all the love they just didn't get.

This might be Dark Adventure/Devil World by Konami. Top-down gameplay, dungeon crawler (though more like Gauntlet than Zelda), and Indiana Jones ripoff "Condor" as a playable character.

Not sure if this really counts since it did get a (really really bad IMO) PS3 remake, but Warhawk for PS1 was amazing, most people I've spoken to have never heard of it.

I've talked about it here before, but Flying Warriors is a gem I forgot about as a kid, and when I found it again, it was like digging up buried treasure.
it also had the sickest opening theme of a video game on the NES!
you had normal platforming elements but with sort of a Kung Fu-esque vibe to it.
and you had some pretty interesting mechanics in the 1 on 1 fights.
you could grapple your enemies!

I really like Gotcha Force. It's a fighting third-person shooter battle arena game with a wide array of fighters. The only thing that stood out as bad to me was the voice acting in the English release.

Thanks for the suggestion! That's not it though, unfortunately. I wish I could remember more about the game, but visually all I can remember is that it looked a bit more "cute," or Zelda-ish I guess. I also can't remember how much combat there was in it, if any. Sheesh, if I ever find this game again, it better actually be good!

But hey, Devil World looks cool! How the heck did they get to use that title without Nintendo blasting on 'em though?

You really need to mention the really cool thing they do for some of the boss fights, even if it is a spoiler, which I'll put in spoilers if that's what you were worried about.

the game has several boss fights that transform the protagonist to be taller and you fight the boss in a 1v1 like an actual fighting game. Like actually, as in changing the controls to play like a normal fighting game and now you have special moves and different normals and stuff.

It's not the best executed idea, but it's SUPER neat and I like the attempt regardless.

I miss Riveria:The Promised Land. I loved the exploration, the colours and most of all the backgrounds. All the locations in the town were vibrant like the crystal caverns, the dryad's grove, mermaid's spring(I don't actually remember their names).

Grind Stormer is an amazing old school shooter. Used to play it on my Sega Genesis a lot. Really difficult game, kinda wish I still had it lol.

Worth noting, but the arcade version (called V-Five) is very different. It uses a Gradius style power up bar where you use crystals enemies drop to purchase weapon changes and upgrades as you go. Same game otherwise though.

Also worth noting, but V-Five/Grind Stormer was designed and prorammed by Tsuneki Ikeda, who would later go on to become the lead designer at CAVE and basically invent the bullet hell sub-genre with Dodonpachi (which he also designed/programmed). You could say he's the father of that sub-genre.

You can definitely see some of the proto influence in V-Five/Grind Stormer, there's a lot of funky things going on with some of the boss bullet patterns in that game.

Probably has been posted already but...
Blood Bros.

I used to play it in this one Nickel City arcade. Was on free play too.

I vid of gameplay:

Can even play an Emu of it here:
http://game-oldies.com/play-online/blood-bros-coin-op-arcade

I will warn you, it's a lot harder than it looks. Do learn the controls during the 1st level because it only gets harder from there.

EDIT: Oh wait, I'm guessing arcade games don't count, do they?

I don't remember any games I've forgotten. :p

But, a game that never got the attention I think it deserved? Bomberman Generations on the GC and Threads of Fate on PSX and Jade Cocoon on PS2.

Bomberman Generations on the GC

That mode where bombs fall from the sky is awesome.

Haven't played the original Jade Cocoon, but I have the sequel on ps2 and it's pretty fun.

The original and the sequel were actually pretty different games, from what I remember. Instead of having a wheel of monsters that you could turn, having different sides with different elements and what not, this one you fought as yourself, but you could summon a monster in your place I think. It was weird. I liked the second one much better.
