Ms. Fortune Filia Double
Hi

Basically, this thread is just a question @Mike_Z
But I was told I should open a new thread for this and discuss it publicly or so, so ok, I will do that!

1. Hi Mike, would you be ok with continuing to work on SG after Robo is done?
2. If yes, for "how long"? Or what about something like a 3 month break and then continuing? etc
3. If yes, how much would that cost? I know the number for a new character was something around 300k, but I am not asking for that.

My thinking process is the following:
- Vanilla was pretty bad
- SDE was still a mess but impossibly much better
- SQG was a game!! Magic. It still had its issues like a busted Fortune etc, but it really really shaped up
etc
Every coming version of SG was "much better" than the last;
At no point in time since the inception of the PC version did I actually get any interest in playing Retail.
I have some 1000h+ in Beta compared to 200h in Retail - and if more people played Beta, the Retail number would be like, 10 hours. Maybe.

At the same time, characters undergo more-or-less massive changes.
Fortune feels like she underwent 18 revisions, until she is finally now at what feels like a pretty good spot.
Filia was a giant mess, now she feels like a character! Parasoul gained Tosscancels to become more interesting + Sniper is magic now;
Double may be perceived as 'too weak' now, but compared to what she was in the Vanilla/SDE days.. you don't want to go back to those. etc
The Vanilla cast feels largely good now. Peacock is still kind of a mess, but overall things are looking pretty good - due to 3 years of constant refinement.
THE PROBLEM: The DLC characters won't get these 3 years.
As it stands currently (at least as far as I know), after Robo, things will be done.
That means that Fukua will have gotten ~1.5 years, Eliza less than that, Beo much less than that, and Robo just the time she is spending in Beta.
- Of course Mike got much better with time, so the groundwork that say Squigly was built on was a ton better than the mess Filia was allaround (with her point being at the wrong spot, that Fenrir Freeze, etc)
But still, the DLC characters will in the end have much less time to get fleshed out and as such are more prone to oversights / whatever you could come up with.

So, it would be cool for the game if Mike was able to continue working on it.
I don't need a new character (for which we know the rough pricepoint of ~300k), I don't need any fancy new animations, palettes, stages, tracks, etc whatever -
I would just like another Balance Patch with some bugfixes and perhaps Training Mode improvements some say 3-6-9 months after Robo, and then ideally a second one of these - another 3-6-9 months later.

But! of course nobody can expect (or even want) Mike to work for free, nor to keep sitting on slave wages,
sooo I would propose another IGG - this time just for 1-2 such balance patches (which is essentially Mike working alone?), which provide Mike with adequate pay.
The questions being, as formulated above,
1) Does Mike even want this (perhaps he wants to be done with this project, or perhaps he really doesn't want another IGG, or w/e)
2) Can Mike do this (perhaps L0 wants to stick together with the next project and he can't keep working on the side on SG / perhaps L0 doesn't want a single guy to keep working on the collab effort while everyone else does other things, etc)
3) And, if both of these are answered with yes (if either is a No, this thread is instant dead right there), what is the rough estimate as to the amount of money that would need to get raised?

Bonus question, for the community - since this IS a thread and all:
4) Would you guys even want this, or am I alone here? There are probably some guys here who want Robo to be done and the development to be over "so SG finally doesn't change massively every few months anymore"; these guys would of course oppose this notion. So yeah, shoot opinion etc, I guess.

G'Day.

P.S.: To clarify!:
I would also be PERFECTLY fine with another IGG for more new characters. I am happy with the current cast, but I certainly don't think it would hurt to have 1-2-3-4-5 more.
But! it was expressed multiple times that L0 would rather not do that, and that it would cost much more, and that they don't expect it to be successful, etc.
So this here would be an alternative that is presumably much much cheaper, while still keeping the SG development going and giving us something to throw our money at.

I'm hoping that Robo will spend enough time in Beta that we won't need a patch post-robo. I don't know about another IGG, maybe just a bugfix/small balance patch after Robo just in case some things got out of whack, but I want to see what else LZ has.

Whether it's Skullgirls 2 or something unrelated, I think that everyone at LZ (especially mike) has learned a lot and I would really like to see them apply that knowledge somewhere else. I complain about things in this game but the engine is phenomenal, and Mike IS a good game designer.

IIRC, there is a potential final patch post Robo Fortune should there be anything that needs to be addressed.

Mike can say whatever he wants, but I honestly believe that as long as he has the ability to make changes, he won't be able to help himself :P

On a more serious note, though, I think Mike is aware that the newest characters are going to need more tuning even after Robo is done, and there are probably already plans in place to provide those balancing updates. Just my guess, I'm not in-the-know on that.

Count taken of every patch that happened so far, it would surprise me if the team just drop the game cold Turkey after Robo Fortune is released. However, it will have to stop at some point. So, if no further game development is done in the franchise ever, there will probably have patch until they can safely say that it's balanced to a point, then stop there while it still works!

As for if we want this...personally i'm not the kind that try to find endless combo so my opinion is probably invalid, but the characters, when finally released, are already in a quite solid state for me so far. So even thought balancing is always good for competitive play, personally i'm already satisfied qith the current balance!

I think its a good idea. I think the only problem would be getting the people who care about balance patches to give out something around 300K. During the IGG there was way more incentive for people who were not super invested in the balance to donate.

Also what would happen if the goal was passed in funding? Milkshakes for Mike? Donate to starving game designers across america?

Okay, okay...you asked this in seriousness, so I'll give you a serious response. Remember, you asked.

I agree with your sentiment about Robo, and possibly Beowulf, having less time than they should have. (Given that I've improved, though, and that there is the Beta, I'm much less concerned than I would be if either of those things weren't true.)
And @Night Phyre is probably right - if I were just sitting around I wouldn't be able to stop myself from fixing things even after Robo. But I won't be just sitting around - whatever Lab Zero moves on to do will be what I move on to do, and will likely consume as much of my time as SG did at the beginning. :^|

The reality is:
I have been working on this game for 70-90 hours a week, straight - without a vacation - since 2011. I have done the jobs of something like twelve people for multiple years. I got married in 2013 and didn't take a honeymoon yet. And I get to deal with fans and non-fans on a daily basis. (I've already gotten around 50 complaints about the MKX PS3 stick driver requiring a DS4 and that's not even our game!)
If Skullgirls were another fighting game, it would be on the 4th or 5th paid revision by the time Robo's patch comes out. That's a lot of work.
I am also down quite a bit of money after working on this game, as are other members of Lab Zero. "Quite a bit" is maybe an understatement, too.
I. Want. To. Be. DONE.
For comparison, the Gamasutra Salary Survey 2014 put the AVERAGE salary for a lead programmer/technical director with over 10 years of industry experience at $116,000 to $135,000 per year. HAHAHAHAHAHAHahahaaaawwwwwwww.

That said...I recognize it might be a good thing for the game, if there are identified problems.
If I weren't doing console port work and bugfixing and scripting new characters, which I have been doing all this time, then making changes for a new patch would occupy a much more reasonable amount of my time. And I do care about the game, I wouldn't be here right now if I didn't. If it weren't starting immediately, and was under ~8 hours a week, and it ended at a defined date, I could probably swing that along with whatever else we're doing.

However:
- This isn't only my decision. I have no idea what the other team members think, or Marvelous.
- It wouldn't be right away, there'd be let's say a 3 month break at minimum before I even looked at what to do.
- I will not run an IGG, and there is no way Lab Zero would run an IGG, so raising any money would be up to y'all.
- My rate would be high for such work, since it's a hassle.

tl;dr
While there is no squidding way I'd do this myself, I am willing to consider one extra balance patch after Robo. It isn't simply my own decision, though, and you will probably not be able to raise enough money to make it happen just from the people that care about gameplay.

How many times does this need to be brought up? I swear, it's like on the internet, nobody knows you're a goldfish.

This is the biggest sticking point by a longshot :( The amount we'd be able to raise for a balance patch would be way, way less than we got for letting people vote on waifus. For that reason alone, I view this as practically impossible, but because you've gamely answered up to this point, I'd ask that you elaborate on the estimated cost. You say you'd consider it, but the discussion can't really move much further unless we know: what will a Skullgirls 2016 Edition patch cost?

OH, I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED
PS3/360 patches are free, but I have no idea if there are patch submission costs on Vita or PS4. If there are, we can't cover those.

I dunno, man, I don't want to pick a number, it weirds me out to ask for money. That's why I avoided mentioning anything. :^P

Let's say 10 hrs a week for 8 weeks = 80 hrs, and like I said it's a hassle (and I would invariably spend more time on it anyway) so at don't-wanna-do-it contractor rate of $150/hr that's $12k. Remember, contractors pay all their own taxes out-of-picket, so the final rate is 66% of that. Best of luck.

My initial response was just "Don't hold your breath." But I figure this community deserves a bit more than that.
I suppose a better way to phrase it would have been "thank you for responding to this seriously." This is something I've speculated about for a long but never bothered to post about/ask about.

Slightly off-topic, but because crowdfunding *was* mentioned and because someone out there is probably wondering about community stats: Over the past month or two, this site has had 450-500 users active each day (no way of telling how many of them are only coming once a month or every day). According to steamcharts, the two versions of SG on steam have had a combined average of ~150 players online at any one time.

Keep in mind that there are users who prefer to stick to steam forums, reddit, etc. than come here and that there are versions of the game on 360 and PS as well. Just putting numbers out there so that people can do what they want with them.

This is something I've speculated about for a long but never bothered to post about/ask about.

I think we all kind of have, so its really nice to have a definitive answer on the subject.

  • Ok. General estimate, 12k.
  • With crowdfunding fees, that means we'd need to raise closer to 14k.
  • If we were to hope for, oh, I dunno... all 500 active Skullheart users to become donors... that would be $28 per donation, average.
Those are the numbers we're working with, for anybody who's seriously considering it.

Note that I didn't say that SH has 500 active users - for all I know there could be 100 people checking the site every day and 400 people checking the site once a week making a total of ~30k. Exaggerated example, but the point remains - many people only access the site on weekends, etc. You'd also need to factor in that there's a (potentially large, possibly not) portion of the community that don't use this site for various reasons and that you'd likely be able to secure small donations from people who haven't visited SG for a while but still wish the project well, while conversely you'd also never be able to convince 100% of any population to donate to something.

EDIT: For example, 50 people have indicated that they're going to combo breaker later this year, and yet entry numbers are already well over that...

70 to 90 hours per week? No wonder you're all burned up! I knew that Lab zero was quite pressurized and that your current work condition were bad, but not to this point!

Just hoping hat no matter what happens next you'll be able to have a normal schedule, no one deserve that!

Let the man rest. Think about patches and stuff in 2016!

Thst being said, lab Zero sure as hell show a lot of commitment and passion. Your next game already have a customer, and if you decide to sell the digital art compendium, I'll buy it too.

I'm not burned out, just tired.

Sorry about that, wrong choice of term. Still, many would have crumbled under that, so it's still impressive that you're just tired then!

I would gladly donate to this. 14k Is a lofty goal but I think it's something that's not totally out of reach. Needs a stretch goal of a honeymoon.

Needs some nifty incentives too, and stuff that the community can offer. Once this ball gets rolling we should start a new thread for people to propose ideas for that.

All I want to say is I don't think there should be another IGG campain. Lab zero did as much as they could and while I wish there was more characters im still satsfied with what we got.

My biggest concern is what will happen to the franchise as a whole. But considering how hard MikeZ works I won't blame him if he wants to move on to something else and leave Skullgirls behind.

This ain't happening without some kind of crowdfunding platform. IGG or not, it's gotta be one of them.

I think he means he doesn't think we should have another crowdfunding, not just IGG specifically.

I got it, but that's the same as saying he just doesn't want this to happen. It's crowd or nothing, I was just trying to impress that upon him.

I know this isn't really something the Skullplayers might care about, but I can get with Danielle, Rich, and whoever else to do some voice stuff. They already did some other stuff for me, so I know they're game to help. Just a thought.

Instead of asking for another IGG campaign, what we should be asking is what Lab Zero going to work on next?
I've been curious to know if they had a plan for a new game (not skullgirls) this whole time.

And like I've been saying this whole time, win the lotto and throw millions at Lab Zero/Marvelous. Then you'll get whatever you want.

We're very rarely privy to the inner politics/work/drama of L0 so whatever happens after Robo-Fortune y'all have a good one, being a breakup, new work or that +R port :U.

In all seriousness Skullgirls is legit one of the best games I've played the past few years, and will be the standard I compare future fighting games to. Love the art, love the sound, love the systems, love all the work put into it.

I should clarify I don't think there should be another crowdfunding period. Lab zero does not want to do one and people who donated to the last one might feel ripped off.

Like I said before I rather Lab zero stops working with slave wages and starts working on a project they want to do. Or if not that's also fine.

Just hoping for an actual publisher to pick em up and support them financially in a proper manner. While IGG is a good place to get potential interrest in a product it's no long term solution. With that said, i'll follow along with what community has in mind as a whole in relation to how L0 stance is towards it. But at the end of the day i don't want L0 to work living in a cardboard box and surviving on bread crumbs and water.

If this happens, it will be a community effort. This will not be run by Lab Zero, so I feel there's little chance of people getting mad at them. We would, in essence, be hiring Mike.

Honeymoon campaign first.

I would rather them focus on work that they can live on. Feels selfish to want to keep them working on crowdfunding slave wages.

Looking forward to LZG next game.
Mike (and lab zero) will be moving onto whatever he's going to be moving onto; that's not gonna change. He's just open to the idea of spending paid overtime to get one more patch out. This idea isn't gonna be holding them up, somehow.

Honestly at a price tag of 12K I don't think it would be a stretch to raise that much money.

On the other hand, I don't know if the game is really going to need another large balance update THAT badly. If it comes down to me forking over a chunk of my savings just to see a balance update on a game that I think is already better balanced than just about every other fighter on the market I'm going to question if its really worth it.

I get what you're saying. As much as I like the idea, it feels like taking advantage.

for the us or for Mike?

My opinion is: I totally IN LOVE with this game, all days im playing ( offline/ local because my internet sucks, hope with get better conection to become a online warrior like all of you.), despiste of my personal feelings towards SG I doesn´t want to L0 to become a slaves for crowfunding, all of the needs money for live/ eat. etc.

I totally looking forward they next project/ game, they deserve a break from SG, specially MikeZ.
