Gaming General Discusison

The stories in Sengoku Musou (and this is where it's genuinely realistic), try not to stray from the historical time line and it's major players. Basara throws that out the window in favor of telling a character's story and might go through completely fictional paths for the sake of making a interesting story (this is the case of Hideyoshi's back story which is IMHO one of the best in the series).
In both games it's possible to have a character "represent" a entire clan and it's participation in several battles (in Basara's case, a good example is Mouri Motonari being present in Sekigahara despite the real one being dead long before that battle).
Both titles try to focus more on a character's story but the backdrop is always one major event (both SM1 and SB1 focus on the Honnouji Incident). Sequels bring more characters and thus open doors to re-enact more battles and events. Nonetheless, those events still appear in the sequels (SB2, SB3 and SB4 still have the Honnouji Incident).
Right now, SB4 is a "dream match". It's as the others and still has a series of battles named after real life ones but the premise is a total ass pull (Ashikaga Yoshiteru "restoring heavenly rule" is basically "whoever beats me gets the country").
SM4, as has been pointed out, is getting to DW's levels of TOO MANY GODDAMNED CHARACTERS and is going to tell clan stories instead of characters meaning many will get the short end of the stick. The sons and stepsons treatment is also probably Basara's biggest problem.

Ah, well, I see that.
That's also pretty much why I tend to want to play it in English instead of importing. (Not understanding what's going on in a game when a characters story is best is kinda a hard gap to jump), but that's fair. SB 4 being a Dream Match does sound like tons of fun though

Ah well, at least SW4 will still have a story mode like DW's, at least. And the fact there's Hypotheticals and Historical does mean there'll be lots of replay value too.
Probably not as much as SB, but enough

Due to Hyrule Warriors, I was considering getting into the Warriors games in general once I crack down and beat a few more games.
Any recommendations? I was looking at Dynasty Warriors 7 & 8, Samurai Warriors 4 (whenever that comes out), Both Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage games, and of course Pirate Warriors.
Any stinkers in there I should avoid or are they all good?
You could try giving Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 a shot, tis a great game.

Just ran back across an old favourite - if you have a spare few minutes, You Have to Burn the Rope is worth taking a look at.

Was a thing, as far as the North American release is concerned. Aeria Games pulled the plug on the game... 'round the end of January, IIRC.

It's for the best, I say, Aeria pretty much screwed the pooch with that game, what with the whole lack of advertisements, the overpriced microtransactions, and general Aeria Games Bullshit™.

If any of you like Batman games, there's a crapton of info on Batman: Arkham Knight over on NeoGAF.
 
I did a favor for my parents and although I tried to refuse they insisted that they throw a little money my way.
I'm planning on using this money to buy two games, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Dark Souls 2 for the PS3.
I'm not 100% set on buying these games so if anyone has any suggestions then I'd like to hear them now.

MGR is a great game. I haven't been able to get DS2 yet, but I hear it's really great from a friend who has it.

I'm going right into #2 and completely skipping #1, I don't really see a reason to get both.

Well I do know there's a story but I didn't think it was that prominent.
 
The plot is quite complex but it's presented minimalistically and leaves a lot of room for speculation. Instead of having to put up with ginormously long cutscenes of 10m monologues or whatever, you learn details here and there from talking with NPCs and reading item descriptions.
I'd say it's mostly about the story arches of assorted characters than a overall story. You - the Chosen Undead - are on a quest and during that journey, meet a lot of folks and learn about the world of Lordran. In that sense, the main character is kind of a empty vessel.
 
That's pretty cool, but I'm not going to spend my money on a previous installation if I don't have to.

Dark Souls very much has a story, it's just presented in a very unique way. You'd be truly missing out for disregarding it, because it's really good.

From what I'm hearing though, Ds2's story so far is vastly inferior to 1's. But that's just what I've heard.

Well I'm getting Dark Souls for the gameplay not the story, which for me is pretty uncharacteristic.

So yeah I'm totally going to disregard the first one, I'll just watch the story on youtube for free.

Sadly it's not the kind of game you can just watch a video of on youtube for the story. It's presented through the game (no cutscenes, and only occasional dialogue with npc's), and a lot of it comes from observations in the environment and figuring out things for yourself, so you can't just watch a bunch of cut scenes to be caught up.

Honestly, even the Demon's Souls on Ps3 is worth experiencing for both gameplay and story (and has its own unique advantages for both of these, as do the others), so it's really worth your time to play all 3 games if you ever have the time/money.

But, and don't take this wrong way, the idea of prequels being inherently inferior is not a good one. Luckily, Dark Souls II has been praised as being, at least, on the same level as DSI.

Like Squire is saying, if you find yourself with the means, time and opportunity, Dark Souls is very much worth it (I can't speak for Demons' Souls though). It's not even a matter of visuals as all the games have small budgets and kinda ghetto graphics (that are expertly covered under a amazing art direction).
I got into DS very late (when PtDE was released) and despite having watched most of the game on YT, still loved the game when I played it. These games are really all about the experience.

You're talking to someone who believes that every single Metal Gear game is a work of art in it's own right.

It's just a recommendation, it's cool.

My only other recommendation, would be that if you don't plan on playing the other games (for now), than don't look them up or read up on the story at all. As far as I know the games aren't connected based on story (that much? Haven't heard from anyone who's beaten ds2 yet), so you won't be missing out on anything, and if you do ever change your mind and play the older games you won't be spoiled and will be able to experience it the way it was meant to be experienced.

I'll just give my two cents on the story considering everyone's talking about it.

basically, the main thing about Dark Soul's story, is that it DOESN'T tell you, like you're a player. it reveals the story in a way that you have to figure it out, like YOU are the character. its kind of like you're both the dungeon master and the player at the same time.

and Dark Souls is super cheap nowadays. I say it's a steal and a great way to jump into the Souls series. Demon's Souls is good but it doesn't have the polish that Dark Souls had gotten after Demon's Souls. They're all still great games and Dark Souls 1 is a great starting point to just jump in on. it's almost a disservice to not at least try to go through it.

Instead how about answering my first question by recommending some other games I could buy?
 
Like I said though, you could always just buy 2 and get Demon's and Dark Souls 1 later. I'm pretty sure 2 isn't as connected, and it's more cinematic I'm told so it's a different kind of stories.

My only advice is don't read the wiki or watch any videos, personally. No reason to spoil yourself needlessly.

But as for other games, what are you in the market for (genre, playstyle, etc.)?

well, no, it's not that. we just want you to experience it like we did. its like if I wanted to watch Kill la Kill for the first time and everyone told me to watch Gurren first, but I didn't want to. it's not like we're getting mad at you over it, far from it. we just want to share the experience. and like Grooktook said, you can always get it later.

and let's see, I recently got Dragon's Crown and love it. I also love Lone Survivor.

It's NOT Dark Souls. I don't know why these guys are telling you to buy Dark Souls either.:PUN:

Nah, really. Go for those two. They're a good balance between something fast-paced that you can play in short bursts (MGRR) and something that will enslave you for the rest of your natural life (DSII).
I'd totally recommend Dragon's Crown over MGRR but that game, while also the type you can play in short sessions given the gameplay is very oldschool arcade beat 'em up, the RPG elements can get you really hooked if you're the type to OCD over stuff.
 
Dragon's Crown is really good, and has a lot of content. It looks like an old school beat em up, but I personally find it feels more like a modern 3d action game thanks to the huge move set and the ability to dodge cancel just about everything.

It's more of a true action rpg than an arcade style game though. It's very unique and cool in execution also imo.

MGR is short, but it has several difficulties and of course anything by Platinum games has a lot of depth for S-Ranking/no death/speed running stages, since they even keep track of it with leaderboards and whatnot.
 
I'm in the market for anything except strategy games, role playing games, and shoot 'em ups.

I'll definitely consider Dragon's Crown but I don't think it will knock off Metal Gear Rising at this point.
 
you can get the PS3 or Vita version for 25 dollars right now, and its definitely worth more than that if you ask me.
 
Damn it, Dark Souls II is a full $60? I barely got that much from helping out my parents.

I may not even get Revengeance now, unless I get crafty.

Rogue Legacy - my game of the year 2013, it feels fundamentally good on every level and has an enormous amount of depth and replay value. If you don't like it it's probably because you're a communist

Max Anarchy/Anarchy Reigns - THIS GAME IS SO GOOD AND SO UNDER-RATED. One of the best, most creative, and enjoyable multiplayer games I've seen in a long time, holy fucking shit why did people sleep on this

El Shaddai Acension of The Metatron - Beautiful game with equally atmospheric and fun gameplay.


Another good recommendation for cheap games, is just to go on ebay and order old last generation games (or even older, ps1/dreamcast/etc.) that you missed out on. You can have some really amazing experiences for like 5-10 bucks. Really enjoying Shinobi (ps2) right now.
 
Bayonetta is actually a good recommendation, thanks for reminding me that I really want to play that game.

Already own Vanquish, I fucking love it. No Mario games and no pixel games please. Call me a communist but I'm not interested in Rogue Legacy at all. Max Anarchy is cool but considering how much Dark Souls II costs at the moment I'm probably only getting that now. El Shaddai looks cool too.
